Chapter 12
Confessions and an Agreement
Jack looked straight at his hands and the staff. He still couldn't believe he had made that ice slide. One moment, his powers felt empty, with nothing left in him. Then Anna had slipped and fallen and Jack had reacted. Now though, he felt as empty as before. He couldn't make another ice beam if he tried.
Jack realized all eyes were on him. Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, Sven, and even Olaf were among the faces looking at him. Olaf was the only one who looked happy. Everyone else had faces ranging from uncertainty to mistrust.
Anna looked over at Jack. "Jack, did you… do that?"
Jack turned to Anna. "Apparently, yes."
Elsa looked closely at him. "You had this ability all along, didn't you?"
Jack blinked. Well, there was no hiding it now. "Yes, I do. Or at least, I did."
Anna's face turned shocked. "Why didn't you tell us before?"
Jack took a deep breath. Might as well get started. "Well, I didn't want to freak you all out. I've had these powers for quite a while. Mainly used them to help others and keep people safe. It's only something I, my uncle, and my family knew about.
"Ever since I woke up in Arendelle, I've felt drained. I don't know how to explain it, but my powers are completely gone. That emptiness on top of waking up in a strange place wasn't really comforting. I just thought that if I didn't have powers anymore, it wasn't worth mentioning. After all, if I can't use it, it isn't really relevant. I know now that that that assumption was wrong."
Everyone still hadn't moved. Jack waited to hear a response. Whether it was disgust, hurt, or something else, he would be ready. When none came, Jack took a deep breath. He had only said half of the truth, now was the time to say the other half, regardless of how crazy he sounded.
Before he could open his mouth, Olaf came over. "It's ok, Jack. It's not like you had many chances to bring it up. Your reasons sound perfectly reasonable and with no expressions of hidden intent. I should know, I can tell when people are lying and trying to decieving me." Olaf then gave a quick giggle, as if what he had just said was funny.
Anna then shook her head, clearing the expression on her face. She turned to Elsa. "Olaf does have a point. And if he still trusts Jack, that's good enough for me. After all, it's not like we're completely blameless on the secrets department."
Elsa looked over at Anna, giving a slight shake of her head. Anna gave a small nod, clearly telling Elsa to do something. Jack didn't know what was going on, but he prepared himself for anything. You never knew with royal families who had a walking, talking snowman.
Elsa turned back to Jack. "I guess if you're being frank here, then I should be too." She then lifted up her hand. Jack looked over, not entirely sure what to expect. One thing he was not expecting though was a white sparkle forming a snowball. Elsa threw it up into the air, where it exploded into a snowfall.
Jack looked over at Elsa, who had taken a seat. "So, you have winter powers as well?"
Elsa nodded. "Yes, but it's getting weaker. That little trick used to be effortless. Now, I need to sit down after doing it. If this keeps up, I might not even be able to make a snow cone."
Jack nodded. "I'm really sorry for you, Elsa. I only wish there was something I could do."
Olaf looked between the two. "Oh, why don't you two compare notes? Jack, maybe you could share your tricks to using your powers; and Elsa, you could show how you control and embrace your powers. Perhaps you both could learn something. Besides, I've been really wanting to hear your singing voice again, Elsa."
Elsa's cheeks turned red. "Perhaps another time, Olaf. I don't think I'm in a singing mood."
But Anna was looking over at Olaf with a smile. "Actually, that's not a bad idea. Not the singing, but the information exchange. Maybe if Jack and Elsa discuss their powers, they can figure out why those powers are getting weaker and how to get them back."
Kristoff was nodding alongside Sven. "Yeah. Maybe this could be the answers you two need."
"I agree Kristoff, it's what Grandpabbie would probably say," Sven said.
"Glad you agree, buddy." Kristoff replied.
Elsa and Jack looked at each other. Now that Jack thought about it, he himself was liking the idea. Who knows, maybe swapping notes could determine if there was a common cause for Jack and Elsa's ice powers disappearing. "I'd be down for that, Elsa. Would you be willing to do that?"
Elsa looked over. Jack could see a little mistrust still there, but her curiosity seemed to be making her consider. Finally, she nodded her head. "Alright, Jack. I think I like that idea. It's getting late though, so what say we start on it tomorrow?"
"The sooner, the better," Sven interjected.
"Yes, but probably tomorrow, buddy," Kristoff replied.
"Of course, Kristoff. I was just saying as soon as reasonably possible." Sven replied.
Jack nodded. "Great. Now, what's for dinner?"
The dinner bell rang and everyone went inside. As Jack went in, he knew he had a lot to think about. So he wasn't the only one who had ice powers in this place. That explained everything. The talking snowman, the snowflake symbols, even the slight dodginess on Elsa's end. Ice powers were a very serious secret, and probably not one shared lightly. Jack found himself excited for tomorrow. Hopefully, this icebreaker would work, so to speak, and all mistrust could be dropped. And who knows, the training might even be fun. Jack shook his head. No doubt about it, he was sure he was going to have a great time at the training session tomorrow.
I hope that the conflict was resolved in an accurate way. As mentioned, this is only my second fanfiction. I tried to resolve this in as reliable a way as possible to the characters (it would make sense that the Frozen group relate to Jack's predicament, as Elsa had her own thing to keep hidden). And now, we'll have to see how tomorrow goes for our characters.
