Jimmy was driving his truck when he saw the silhouette of a person lying down on the wet floor beside one of the closed shops. The town's a small place, there can't be a homeless person here. He stopped his car by the side of the road, and he stepped out. The rain was thundering louder and louder. Damn it, he thought. He got closer, he could hear the sound of a cat crying as the rain dropped down on the surface dwellers. He got closer, and he was shocked with what he saw. It was Luna, she had bubbles coming out of her mouth. Panicked, he crouched down. "LUNA! GET UP! KID! GET UP!" He saw the kitten beside her, it was wet. "Damn it," Jimmy picked Luna up and sat her on the passenger side of his truck. He placed his finger on Luna's neck, her pulse was weak. The kitten wanted to follow, Jimmy saw it. He grabbed the little thing up and placed it on Luna's lap. He closed the door, and got inside. "Luna, I'm gonna take you to a hospital! Just stay the fuck alive!" He punched the gas.
"Where the hell's Luna?" Lily's belly growled. She's hungry, she's bored. She looked out the balcony and she saw the rain, loud and angry. She got up, and she looked around. Curiosity, teenage curiosity. It fucked her life already, why not more? Lily went inside the master bedroom and she went to the drawers. She pulled one out, underwear. She closed it and opened another one, a singular A3 sized hard cover book was inside. She took it out. It was dusty. "Luna's not gonna come home yet, I'll just help myself," Lily said to herself. She opened the book and the first page had a note written on it. The paper is yellowing. "Fuck is this?" She asked as she looked at the writing. It read.
To my beloved, Luna.
I'll always be yours, through thick and thin, through hell and high water, through health and illness, I will never leave you.
Yours
Sam.
"Guess Luna was a real prick for Sam to dump her," Lily said as she flipped to the next page. Her spine shuddered when she saw the page. It was their wedding photos, but all of Luna's face had been ruined by deep pen stabs. "What the fuck is this?" She flicked to the next page. More pictures, all of Luna's face had been scratched off with ink and rage. And the next, and the next, and the next. Every single page in that album had her face scratched out with ballpoint pen ink. Then she flicked to the last page. It was the family photo, Lily was still a baby in it. It was the only picture of Luna that didn't get scratched. The paper looked old, when was this taken? "What really happened Luna?" Lily closed the album, and just as she was about to put it back inside the drawer. A folded piece of paper fell out. "What's this?" She picked it up. Just as she was about to open it, a thunder crashed and the lights went out.
"Damn it," She stuffed the paper back in the drawer and got out of the room. She went to the fuse box and she flicked the switch. "When the hell was this place built?" Lily asked herself after flicking the light on. She went to the room Luna gave her and she sat on the bed. "I'm fucking hungry,"
I opened my eyes and I saw that I was in a car. I could hear Gee meowing at me. Where the hell am I? I felt Gee's paws trying climb up my body, I looked down and I saw it meowing as it looked into my eyes. I looked to my side and I saw Jimmy driving. What the fuck happened? "Jim, what the hell happened?" I asked, my head felt as if someone shot me with a rifle. He looked at me, and I saw his face turn from distressed to happy.
"Holy shit, you're alright!" He exclaimed before quickly gluing his eyes back on the road. "I found you with bubbles coming out of your mouth, so I dragged you in the car, we're on our way to the hospital, just hang on!" He said quickly.
"What? No, no, I'm alright, I'm fine." My head hurts, but I couldn't care less. I don't want to go to the hospital. "Jimmy, pull up." I told him.
"No! I'm taking you to the hospital!" He shouted.
"You can't force me!" I yelled back at him.
"I'm taking you to the fucking hospital Luna!" He yelled louder.
"I'M NOT YOUR FUCKING DAUGHTER!" I screamed. I guess it worked because he stepped on the brake hard. I saw his eyes. It was turning red. Fuck. Shit. What the fuck is wrong with me? "Jimmy, I- I didn't mean to-" I wanted to apologize, but he cut me off.
"You're right," He said somberly. "You're not my daughter, I'm sorry,"
I was about to say something, but he continued. "I just don't want what happened to mine, happen to someone else's too," I saw the rain stopped. He punched the gas again and he turned around. We didn't go back to town, he took a different road. I wanted to say something, but I can't. I don't know why. What the fuck is wrong with me? He killed the engine and he stepped out of the car. He went over to my side, and opened the door. I got out.
"Where are we?" I asked.
"Follow," He said. I closed the door. Gee was inside the truck, wanting to follow me, meowing as I walked away, but I don't think I can bring him here, I don't know what would happen to him if he got lost. We walked for a bit, the road was dirt, and since it just rained, it was mud now. Finally we got to a cliff. I saw the bottom, it had water there. What's the deal with this place? Fuck. "This is the place I'd take my daughter to after my wife died. She used to love it." Jimmy said. "We would sit here, talking and playing with those dumb card games she bought at school. It was a better time. But of course, time changes, people too." He sat down with his legs dangling off the cliff. I did too, I sat beside him. It seemed right. It's not that it matters anyway. "I'm sorry if I crossed my boundaries, but I just don't want to see someone else's daughter end up like mine. For the most part, I see you as my own daughter already," He said.
"You see, when you first came here, I just lost my daughter." He said as he took out his wallet. He showed me a picture. The girl's face was shaped was just like mine, the only difference were her blonde hair and the freckles. "You just reminded me of my daughter, I'm sorry." He said. "She went to the city for work 11 years ago, she said that she'd make it big and that she'll come back home with all sorts of cookies and candies. But after a few years, her personality changed, she wasn't the little girl I raised anymore. Whenever she came home, she'd be high on her ass, or drunk. I didn't even try to stop her, I didn't want her to hate me. That was my biggest mistake. Then one day, she came back home. In a casket." Jimmy's eye teared up. "I wish I could've stopped her. And then, you stumbled into my station. Blanked out of your mind, broken and lost. You passed out in the same exact spot my Jane did the last time I saw her alive." He looked at me. I guess everyone has a tragic backstory.
I took out my cigarette container, and I picked took out a tobacco rollie. I sat it in my mouth and I lit it up. I took a long puff, and I took it off my mouth. "I'm sorry," I told him. "I didn't know," I said. I wanted to cry. What the fuck is wrong with me? "I came from Michigan," I continued. He looked at me. "When you found me by that dumpster, I was ready to die." I offered him a smoke from my container, he shook his head a no. I closed it. "If you didn't wake me up that night, I might've done it by now," I said. The rollie in my mouth didn't feel right anymore. It felt heavy. My eyes felt heavy. "I've done so many bad things, I've hurt so many people, especially my family,"
"Oh Luna, family is forever, they can't be mad at you forever," Jimmy said. He tried to cheer me up. But he failed.
"No, what I did was unforgivable. Do you know the Luna Loud Fiasco back in '27?" I asked him.
"Yeah, come on Luna, we both know you're just hiding your real name-"
"That was me, I am the real Luna Loud," I said. "I'm not just a lookalike, I know that's what the town thinks, but I am really her," I took a deep puff. "I've done so many bad things to them. I know they won't forgive me." I curled my legs up. "I miss my dad, I miss my mom, I miss my siblings, I miss them all," I do miss them. But it's too late for me. I cried. Imagine coming back home after 7 years of no contact. I'm ashamed of myself.
"Luna... Family forgives, family is forever, go back to them. The past doesn't matter, the thing is you have to think about is your future, you're 29, you still your entire life to look up to. You're still alive," He said. I know he wanted to help me.
"I only have a year and a half left, 2 if I am lucky, before everything becomes a blur." I said. I realized I said that when it was too late. When he asked.
"What do you mean?"
"Do you know why I'm in Oregon in the first place?" I asked him. He shook his head. "I wanted to die alone, when my dad was dying from brain cancer, I didn't go meet him on his death bed. I didn't even try to act like I cared. So now that God gave me the exact same thing he had, I think it'll be fair for me to die alone. I don't want them to care about me after what I did. Hell, I didn't even tell them about it. After what I did, I don't have the guts to meet them," I guess I cried, because I tasted the salty seas in my mouth. I hate it. I hate what I did. Doesn't mean I didn't do it. I took the rollie out of my mouth and I extinguished the heat. It burned my finger, but why do I care? I sat it back inside the container, and I looked at the sky. "It doesn't matter, I'll die one day, and I'm gonna die alone. Well not alone, if Lily decided to stay for a bit longer."
"Your sister?" He didn't say anything about the cancer. Thank God.
"Yeah, she ran away from home, and somehow found me here, I still don't know how," I chuckled a bit. I stood up, and I took the gun Jimmy gave me out of my pocket. "You should take it, I don't have a use for it," I said as I laid it on the ground. I went back to the truck, and I saw Gee sleeping on the seat. He saw me. He started meowing again.
I saw Jimmy got up, he picked the gun up, and he walked over to the truck. He unlocked the doors, and I got in. Gee climbed on my laps. Jimmy looked at the kitten, "I'll tell John that you found a small cat, I'm sure he'll let it slide. " He said. He started the engine up, and it purred. How long has it been since I had a talk like that. "Thanks Jimmy," I said. "It helped a bit,"
"It's alright Luna, you won't die alone," He said. We left that cliff and we went back to town. The sun was setting. It was golden, the sky is. It was pretty. "I'm sure there's a way to get you fixed..." He said.
"It's alright Jim, it's my time." I'm reaching my ending, I accepted that fact long ago. I just wished that it happened sooner. I don't want to die alone.
Michigan...
Lincoln woke up on the couch. He could hear Lisa's voice explaining something. "What the hell happened?" He asked himself. Jordan saw him waking up, and she went to him.
"Hey honey, drink some," Jordan gave him a glass of water. He drank it. "Come on, we're having a meeting," Jordan pulled him up.
"From the video, we know that the thing happened in Oregon. I managed to pinpoint the incident to Richard county based on the sheriff deputy's badge. It's a small county sandwiched between Clackamas and Hood River, with only 4 towns and 512 people living in it, we can track Luna down easily. And if Lily decided to try and track Luna down too, we can always check the 4 towns. If she managed to get to Oregon in the first place." Lisa emphasized on the "if". "So, any volunteers on who's going?" Lisa asked.
Lincoln and Lori raised their hands. "I have something to say to Luna," Lincoln said.
"I also have something to say to her," Lori said, aggressively. Lynn looked at the two of them, and said:
"Punch that asshole for me please, I'll give you $70," Lynn pulled out her purse.
"Yeah me too, $48.50 from me," Lana said as she sat the cash on the table.
Just as the others started placing their cash on the dining table. Mom came in from the kitchen. They quieted down.
"Give her a nice firm slap across the face," Mom said as she sat down $150 on the pile. "And make sure it stings,"
"After the aggravated assault, what are we supposed to do to her?" Lori asked. Her hand counting the money as she looked at mom.
"Try to get her home, please." Mom said before going to her room.
"Stay safe now kid, we're back in business tomorrow by the way," Jimmy said before driving off. I waved at him. I got upstairs, unlocked the door and I got inside.
Lily was standing with her arms crossed in front of the door.
"Where did you go?" Lily asked, fuming.
"Pub," I said.
"Did you bring any food?"
"Fuck. Sorry." I sat Gee down on the floor, and he started walking around. I took the other can of cat food out of my pocket and I opened it up. "Enjoy your dinner Gee. Come on Lily," I waved at Lily. I looked at the two, and I sighed. Maybe Jimmy is right, maybe I won't die alone. Even if it's for a while, not being alone does feel good.
"Where to?" Lily asked.
"Dinner,"
