Chapter 5 - Escort Duty
Rodia
3 weeks later
A few weeks after we rescued Jabba's son, General Void and I were escorting Senator Padme Amidala to Rodia on a diplomatic mission. The Chancellor had insisted that she take an escort, so she asked for a Jedi one. General Void happened to be the closest Jedi and I just decided to tag along.
We were heading to Rodia's capital city, Iskaayuma, to meet Senator Onaconda Farr in Senator Amidala's H-type Nubian yacht. Also with us were Senator Amidala's protocol droid, C-3PO, and a clumsy Gungan named Jar Jar Binks.
Senator Amidala received a call from the chancellor and his holo-form appeared, "Senator Amidala, I just received word that you have ventured through enemy territory into the Outer Rim."
"Senator Farr requested me personally, chancellor." Senator Amidala replied while listing the reasons why she came, "His planet is in crisis. His people are starving! He's a very old family friend. I could not refuse his plea for help."
Everyone else in the small ship looked at each other awkwardly, "I understand, but in these dangerous times, you should be accompanied by a clone escort," the chancellor said.
"I have a Jedi with me," Senator Amidala retorted and General Void stepped into the chancellor's view.
"The Senator will be safe with Admiral Patton and I," confirmed General Void.
"Yousa no needin' worry, chancellor," Jar Jar stepped forward and said, "As resempative of Nab—"
"Jar Jar, look out!" Senator Amidala cried. When Jar Jar stood up, he spun 3PO in his chair, and Jar Jar was tripped by the spinning protocol droid. He fell over and hit a button on the control panel for the ship.
The ship veered off course and Senator Amidala stabilized it, but not before everyone else in it yelped and fell down and wound up in a pile on the floor; all while the chancellor was in the audience, of course.
After the immediate crisis was averted chancellor Palpatine suggested, "May I request that only those who are qualified for these delicate peace talks participate in them?"
Senator Amidala looked at us, while we were standing up and dusting off, and conceded to the chancellor's request, "I will follow your advice, chancellor, thank you."

Rodia
Iskaayuma city
10 minutes later
Rodia was a lush, green world. It was filled with oceans and swamps, so the locals built beautiful domed cities.
We had landed in Rodia's domed capital of Iskaayuma and to avert more disasters, Senator Amidala asked me to, "Watch over Jar Jar and Threepio for me, okay?"
"Yes, Ma'am," I reluctantly agreed. After all, who would want to be stuck with the idiot Gungan?
"Lookee, lookee! Isa swamp planet just like home. Meesa has to get going." Jar Jar exclaimed once we landed and he saw Rodia's surface.
"Jar Jar, you would be doing me a great favor by staying with the ship." Senator Amidala tried to calm him down.
"Meesa knowing Meesa will be a big help with the negotiations." Jar Jar said.
"I need you to watch over. . ." Senator Amidala paused as if looking for a name, "Threepio. You know how he always gets himself in trouble."
"Trouble? Me? Really?" Threepio exclaimed indignantly.
"I won't be long," the senator said as she started walking away. When she saw the sad look on Jar Jar's face she tried to cheer him up, "Don't worry Jar Jar, Admiral Patton will keep you company."
"Meesa understands, my lady."
"Come on, Master Void," Senator Amidala called him to walk with her.

Rodia
Outside the ship
3 minutes later
After Senator Amidala had left with a Rodian man to go see Senator Farr, I was stuck with Jar Jar and Threepio outside the ship.
Odd noises came from the swamp that we were next to and Threepio somehow understood them, "How rude! I'm afraid the local swamp life doesn't have a very high opinion of us."
"Whaten dey speaking?" Jar Jar asked. I also was interested to find out.
"I couldn't possibly repeat it." Threepio said. Dang, even the swamp creatures have cusses to throw at us.
"Ah, theesa swamp dwellers just like meesa." Jar Jar gestured to himself and said, "I will convince them of our good fellowship."
"Jar Jar, you probably shouldn't do that," I said, "I don't think that they are like your friends on Naboo."
Jar Jar walked over to the edge of the platform and stuck his head out, trying to listen to the low, guttural noises emanating from the swamp. He then yelled out in an high pitched and rapid paced alien language to the swamp. He surprisingly received a reply of more noises.
"Meesa make contact," he said.
"Oh dear," said Threepio.
Jar Jar made more noises and the creature in the swamp responded again. This time, though, when the creature "spoke," it threw an object at us. I dodged it, making the fruit hit Threepio. It exploded on impact.
"I don't think that requires translation," Threepio said, his "face" now covered in bright orange goo.
More guttural noises came from the swamp.
"Knock it off over there, Jar Jar," I said as he ran over to wipe the goo off Threepio.
Then four b1 battle droids walked into the hangar.
"Oh my stars. Battle droids." Threepio said when he saw the droids.
"Weesa in trouble now." Jar Jar said.
"Stop where y—" the lead battle droid was cut off as I shot all four of them with my pistols.
"Threepio, get on the ship and contact the Republic. Jar Jar, go swimming, now," my tone left no room for an argument and the two went on their way.
"Look out, Admiral! A crab droid is heading right for you!" Threepio cried as a crab droid walked into the hangar and started firing.
"Keep going, I've got this covered!" I yelled back while I ducked behind a few crates.
I shot the crab droid a few times. Because of its relatively light armor compared to a spider droid; it was disabled easily.
"Greatsa job, Admiral," said Jar Jar, shaking the water of himself.
"Get back in the water!"
General Void then rushed into the hangar with Senator Amidala in tow. General Void saw that Jar Jar was the closest to the controls and yelled, "Jar Jar! Close the hangar doors! The battle droids are behind us.
"Hokay, General!" Jar Jar said. He looked at the control board and pressed a random button which activated a large, metal arm. Jar Jar slipped and his hand grabbed the lever for support.
"Jar Jar, No!" The Senator yelled as she saw the arm moving toward the ship, but she was too late with her message. The arm smashed into the ship and a side of it was completely destroyed.
I resisted the urge to face palm as Threepio said, "Well that's the end of our ship, typical."
"Is Jar Jar always like this?" I asked the senator.
She had a grimace on her face and sadly replied, "Yes, yes he is. Now let's go see if the communicator is still working."
I pressed the button to close the hangar doors and walked with Threepio, the Senator, and General Void to see if we could salvage anything from the ship.
Almost everything inside the ship was sparking and mangled except for a button on a pedestal. I reached out to press it but Senator Amidala slapped my hand away. "Don't press that!"
"Why?" I asked, raising an eyebrow in suspicion.
"Ummm. . .," the Senator paused for a moment, as if thinking of a reason why I couldn't touch it, "It's a self-destruct button."
"Uh huh," I said, not buying the act.
I pressed the button before she could stop me and a hidden door in the back opened. Inside was a Jedi robe. "What the heck?" I said in surprise, "Senator, why do you have a Jedi robe of all things in here? Wait, is that a name tag on it?"
She quickly pushed the button again and the hidden closet closed, "That's not important right now. We need to get to the communications tower to send a message to the republic."
"Yes Senator." I focused on the more pressing issue. I wasn't going to let this subject go, though, and by the look on the general's face, he wasn't about to either.
"Senator, the ship is useless now. We need to get moving," urged General Void. We left the ship.
"Did you get an estimate on how many droids they have?" I asked.
"A small garrison, nothing that we can't defeat." Finally, some good news.
Right after he said that, the hangar door was blasted open by a wrist-rocket from a b2 super battle droid. A second rocket flew behind that one, its purple-red hue illuminating the space around it.
"Take cover!" I yelled as everyone dived away from the next wrist rocket. The purple projectile totaled the ship even more after it narrowly missed Threepio.
The 2 super battle droids were accompanied by 20 b1 battle droids.
I cursed under my breath and returned fire with my pistols, destroying one of the rocket droids in the process. The battle droids had pinned us down and our cover was slowly being chipped away by their blasters.
General Void had deflected some laser fire back at the remaining super battle droid and disabled it. He charged into the rectangular formation of the battle droids, deflecting lasers back at the shooters with his lightsaber.
Because the droid's attention was focused on the General; the Senator and I were free to fire on them. A good half of the battle droids were destroyed by our combined fire and General Void destroyed the rest.
"Come on! Let's get to the communications tower." I reminded everyone after we caught our breath.
"Wait, where's Jar Jar?" The Senator queried.
"Going for a swim," I replied nonchalantly.
The Senator sent me a glare and started walking out of the hangar, with the rest of us in tow.

Rodia
Main Courtyard
6 minutes later
We had nearly arrived at the communications tower and we were in the main courtyard. Threepio spotted Viceroy Nute Gunray surrounded by battle droids, so our party hid behind a pillar and eavesdropped on the battle droids reporting to him.
"Sir, formation one has been destroyed by the Jedi." A commander reported with its signature nasally voice.
"Jedi?!" The other battle droids asked in surprise and confusion.
"Quiet, you," the Viceroy said, "Send in the destroyer droids to kill them, and the Senator, too."
"Kill the Senator?!" Onaconda indignantly asked, "You can't! We were promised that you wouldn't."
"You are under my protection now," the Viceroy angrily said, "And you will do what I demand of you."
Senator Farr lowered his head, probably regretting his joining with the Separatists. That's when a b1 battle droid spotted General Void and yelled, "It's the Jedi!"
I raised an eyebrow at the droids not acknowledging the rest of us and while firing at the Separatists I asked General Void, "Quite the celebrity around here, aren't you?"
Before he could reply, Gunray ordered all of the battle droids to his position and five destroyer droids rolled into the courtyard in short order. We ducked behind a pillar to avoid the onslaught of their dual lasers. Then I heard Jar Jar's voice.
"Threeso! Meesa made a new friend!" All parties in the courtyard looked in his direction and saw him atop a gigantic creature. In my mind I dubbed it a water-worm-with-lots-of-legs.
"Aaah! Sir it's the slug-monster!" The B1 commander yelled in fear.
"Shoot him, shoot them! Shoot them all! That Gungan has summoned a monster!" Viceroy Gunray frantically ordered. He gestured to two b1's and said, "You two, with me."
Almost 40 battle droids opened fire on the slug-monster, as the b1 put it. I wasn't very surprised to see that its skin was resistant to blaster fire, but it was still impressive. The creature even tanked a wrist-rocket.
It roared in anger and smashed through all 3 droidekas. The rest of us fired on the droids. It was a slaughter. I noticed that the Senator had moved away, behind Nute Gunray.
She shot the b1s on his sides with her pistol before they could respond and said, "Hold it right there, Gunray." Spitting his name out like a curse and holding a blaster to his face.
"At last, we can finish this." Said Senator Farr as he held a blaster behind the Senator.
"Onaconda, it is about time," the Viceroy said in relief, "Blast that Jedi and shoot her!"
The Senator noticed Farr's pleading eyes and said, "Uncle Ono, I think it's time to tell the Viceroy about our little secret. How you never meant to leave the republic, and how you truly care about what's best for your people."
"What is she talking about?!" The Viceroy demanded.
Senator Farr said, "Sorry, Viceroy, she is right. I am with the Republic, and you are under arrest." That was the biggest load of bantha dung I've heard in a long time, but still, a pleasant surprise.
"You will pay for this treachery." The Viceroy promised.
"Viceroy, you are going to spend the rest of the war in a cell."
"Your victory will be fleeting, senators."
At this point I noticed that Threepio was missing and saw him come back into the courtyard. Apparently, he had ran off during the battle to contact the republic and now gunships were arriving.
"Meesa maken a very good friend today," said Jar Jar, referring to the slug-monster.
I couldn't help but smile at that and say, "Yes, Jar Jar. Yes you did."

Venator Star Destroyer - Titan
Random Backwater World
20 hours later
It turned out that the clones who arrived were from the 554th legion, so General Void and I came back to the Titan with them, and Viceroy Gunray of course. We had left Senator Amidala to smooth things over with the Rodians. I didn't like how Senator Farr handled the situation, but at least he came back to the Republic. General Void and I agreed to not tell anyone what really transpired on Rodia.
We were currently over a random outer rim world, calibrating a series of hyperspace jumps to Coruscant, where we would be depositing our "guest." We were currently interrogating him for relevant information.
Howler squad and some senate commandos were in the room to guard Viceroy Gunray. After seeing them in action on Tatooine, I asked for them to be reassigned under my direct command, and my request was granted.
I had arrived to question him before General Void, but I decided to wait for the General to start. In the meantime, it was amusing to listen to the Viceroy's bribes to us.
"I am a man of great wealth," the Neimoidian said to Pinpoint, "And I can be very generous to my allies."
"That is a very tempting offer," Pinpoint sarcastically replied as he removed a set of binders from his belt, "In the meantime, I have a gift for you."
A few clones were snickering at this exchange when I received a call from the bridge.
"Sir, a Jedi is requesting permission to land," a communication officer informed me.
"Do their codes check out?" I asked.
"Yes, sir."
"I see no reason why not. The more, the merrier, right trooper?"
"Yes, sir"

Brig
7 minutes later
The Jedi who arrived was called Luminara Unduli and with her was Commander Tano. Everyone had finally arrived at the brig and the Jedi could start questioning Gunray.
"How goes the interrogation?" I asked Pinpoint, "Has the Viceroy cracked yet?"
"Not yet, sir. Neimoidians are a slippery lot, but the Jedi will wear him down," Pinpoint replied.
The Senate Commando Captain, Faro Argyus, had also walked to see what was happening inside the cell. It was rather amusing without the dialogue.
"Wait, what's the Commander doing?!" I asked in alarm. She was holding a lightsaber to Gunray's face and yelling threats to him. General Void stood by with a grimace while General Unduli sent the Padawan outside.
"Admiral, perhaps you can talk to Padawan Tano about how we treat our prisoners." General Unduli requested.
"Yes, ma'am."
After the door closed, I asked Commander Tano, "What does she want me to do?"
She shrugged.
"You weren't actually going to gut him, right?" Pinpoint asked worriedly.
"Of course not!" The young Togruta replied, "He was only going to talk if he was scared enough!"
"Hmm," I pondered the issue for a moment and said, "Don't do stuff like that in front of other Jedi."
"Sure thing, Admiral."
"Commander Tano, on a more personal note; can you ask General Skywalker why his Jedi robe was in Sena—" I was interrupted by a sudden thud.
"Bridge, status report!" Pinpoint yelled into his comlink.
"Sir, it's the Seppies! They've brought boarding ships and a squadron of fighters!" Brass replied. Huh, only a single squad of fighters.
"Orders, sir?"
"Focus fire on the boarding pods and after that on the fighters."
"Yes, sir." The comlink shut off and I handed it to Pinpoint.
Pinpoint got another call and he picked up. "Iron leader to commander Pinpoint. Super battle droids have breached our hall. They're heading for the detention level. We need reinforcements!"
The troopers scream of pain was heard and the comm shut off.
"Commander, I'll need your assistance," General Unduli calmly said as she began to run to the hangar bay.
"Let's go!" Commander Tano eagerly said.
"Not you Padawan, you must stay here with Captain Argyus to guard the Viceroy," General Unduli admonished.
"But. . ." General Unduli sent her a glare and she said, "Yes, Master."
"I'll guard the bridge," General Void said as he began running there.
"And I'll be here, then." I said.
After the other Jedi had left, Gunray said, "It appears that you are in no position to negotiate after all, Padawan. Perhaps after my rescue—"
"Rescue?" He was interrupted by the Commander with a scoff, "Maybe they're here to make sure you won't talk."
Gunray paled at the thought of his allies betraying him like that.
"All units, there's a bald—" a clone was cut off on the comlink by something that sounded like a lightsaber.
"Bald?" Commander Tano asked, "That could be Ventress!"
"It could be," I agreed. Skywalker had told me about a bald woman with lightsabers when we were leaving Jabba's palace.
After a few minutes of silence, Commander Tano said, "looks like your rescue attempt didn't work out after all."
"I am ready to discuss our bargain again," the Viceroy sighed.
"Alright Viceroy," I said, "How about this? If you tell the republic everything you know and give them all your money; then, we will not kill you for your crimes."
"You know what," he said with a queasy look on his face, "I'll just wait for another rescue attempt."
"Padawan Tano, may I have a word?" Captain Argyus asked.
"Certainly, Captain," she turned back to look at Gunray and snarked, "if I leave, you won't be going anywhere, will you?"
"Ha ha ha," Gunray sarcastically laughed.
She walked over to Captain Argyus and he said, "I've got the all clear. The enemy has been repelled."
"And their attempt to free Gunray has. . . Failed?" She looked at two red lightsabers cutting a hole through the ceiling.
A white, bald woman jumped through the hole and kicked the senate commandos beneath her unconscious.
Commander Tano and I rushed over with the Howler squad in tow. She had her lightsaber ignited and I had my cortosis blade out and ready.
"If it isn't the hairless harpy." Commander Tano snipped.
"If it isn't Skywalker's filthy, obnoxious little pet."
Ouch.
"How nice of you. Tell you what, I'll give you a merciful death."
Ventress ignited her lightsabers and leaped into action, quite literally, in fact. Commander Tano knocked the slash away and tried to counter attack with a swipe to the head, but Ventress jumped back.
Ventress jumped forward again seeking to attack the commander.
"Commander Tano, roll out of the way!" I yelled.
She did as she was told. and I brought my blade to bear against Ventress' lightsabers. Instead of her lightsabers cutting through my blade like she expected, they stopped. She pressed harder in an attempt to overwhelm me, but her blades started flickering.
General Void had told me that Cortosis could power off lightsabers, but it was more impressive to see it in person.
Ventress let out a grunt of anger as her blades extinguished and wouldn't turn back on.
"Shoot her!" Commander Tano yelled to the senate commandos and clones.
A flurry of blue laser fire came at her and she ducked behind a control panel, pressing a button on her wrist. The ship shook and she jumped down the lift.
"Kriff, she got away" I cursed.
"Thanks for your help, Admiral," commander Tano said.
"Anytime, commander."
"Sir, everythings running haywire. The doors, the lifts, communications down, propulsions dead. She's crippled the entire ship," said Captain Argyus.
By this time Generals Unduli and Void had arrived. "We need to prevent the assassin from escaping. Close the hangars and lock down the escape pods." General Unduli ordered into her comm.
"And keep her on the ship?!" I asked incredulously, "Trooper, belay that order."
"This is our chance to capture Dooku's apprentice," General Unduli countered, "We can't let it go to waste."
"Is it worth the lives of everyone on this ship? We should just kill Gunray and be done with this," I grumbled.
"I agree with the Admiral," General Void said, "If we do decide to hunt her down we should kill Gunray."
General Unduli sent him a glare, "That is not the Jedi way."
"We can discuss this later," I intervened before an argument could take place. "We could either try to capture a single assassin for the Jedi, or we could complete our actual mission of transporting the Viceroy. Need I remind you that when you became generals, your allegiance was placed to the republic's priorities before your Jedi ones."
"I agree with the Admiral," General Void said.
"Master Unduli, if you truly feel so strongly about the assassin, then you are free to pursue her," I said.
"Very well, Admiral," General Unduli conceded, "Padawan Tano will go with me to stop the assassin."
"I will remain to guard Gunray," General Void said.
"And I'll head to the bridge," I concluded, "Come on, Pinpoint."

Bridge
12 minutes later
It took slightly longer than normal to get to the bridge because the lifts were down. Pinpoint and I ran up the stairs to the bridge to find it in complete disarray.
"Sir, thank goodness you've arrived," Captain Drift said in relief, "Almost every system is down; we're sitting ducks out here."
"Focus on repairing the long range comms," I ordered the crew, "And the hangar doors, too."
"Yes, sir!"
I could only hope that the Separatists didn't have a decent backup plan now that their original one failed. As Drift put it; we were sitting ducks.
After a few minutes of waiting in my chair while the clones worked furiously at their stations, someone said, "Sir, I've got some good news! The systems are just out of power and I just found enough to send a transmission to the nearest Republic ship."
"Great job trooper. Patch me through," I said in a relieved voice.
The clone pressed a few buttons on his screen and the hologram of an admiral popped up in front of me. Standing beside her was a female Jedi.
"This is Admiral Thorne of the Venator Cavalier," the Admiral said in a brisk tone, "Is there a reason for this call?"
"This is Admiral Patton, of the Titan," I confirmed my identity. "As a matter of fact, yes; there is a reason for this transmission. We were transporting a high priority Separatist prisoner, but the Seppies launched a rescue attempt. My ship is crippled and I would really prefer to avoid a fight with the droid army at this moment. That's why I'm requesting that your battle group as an escort until repairs to my hyperdrive can be made."
"That would be acceptable," the Jedi agreed.
"Admiral Thorne, set course for Admiral Patton's coordinates."
The transmission cut off and I asked a clone, "How are the hangar repairs going, trooper?"
"Well, sir. The main hangar bay is being cleared of battle damage and the doors already work," the soldier replied.
"Good, now status re——"
I was cut off by a clone trooper yelling, "Sir, it's the Seppies! They're back with two frigates!"
Kriff, this wasn't good. "Status of the engines trooper?"
"Sir, they're 73% ready."
"That will have to do." I said to no one in particular, "Helm, put full power to the engines and bring the bottom of the Titan to face the Seppies."
"Sir?" The helmsman asked in confusion.
"You heard me right, trooper. We just need to buy time for Admiral Thorne to arrive," I replied. The bottom of a Venator had rather heavy armor compared to the rest of the ship, and the bottom side of the Titan was mostly left unscathed by Ventress' bombs.
"Yes, sir," the helmsman said.
The 2 Separatist Munificent class frigates had opened fire on the Titan the moment they arrived out of hyperspace. A fury of red laser fire stripped away the weapons and sensor clusters on the Titan, all while we were positioning ourselves to hold off for as long as possible.
Once the Titan was in position, all that my crew could do was wait.
"Sir, the Corvette in the hangar bay is taking off!" A clone shouted in alarm.
I received a call from General Void and picked up, "Admiral, don't let that ship escape! The assassin and Gunray are both in it!"
How an assassin managed to defeat three Jedi was beyond me. I replied, "Sorry General, weapons and hangar doors are still down. There's nothing I can do."
He looked down in defeat and said, "I'm heading to the bridge." The call ended.
For the next few minutes the sounds of explosions rang through my ship. It was already crippled, and I wasn't sure how much more damage it could take, when Admiral Thorne arrived.
"Sir, three Jedi cruisers are dropping in behind the Seppies," a clone said with relief in his voice.
"Sir, incoming transmission from the Cavalier," a clone said, "Patching it through, now."
"Admiral Patton, you've gotten yourself in quite the pickle," Admiral Thorne greeted me. The Jedi cruisers had already crippled the two frigates with their opening bursts and now it was cleanup time.
"Good timing, Admiral Thorne," I said as General Void arrived to the bridge, "Do you see that corvette on your sensors?"
"No, Admiral."
"Dammit, Gunray escaped," I cursed. My ship was crippled and many clones had died for nothing.
"Master Void, is that you?" The Jedi cut in when she saw the General.
"Oh, Syra, it's a pleasure," the General replied.
"Perhaps this can be done later," I said.
"Of course, Admiral," The Jedi agreed as the last Seppie ship blew up.
"Should we come to your ship?" Admiral Thorne asked sarcastically.
I took a cautious look at my sparking tactical board and replied, "Why don't we go to yours."

Venator Star Destroyer - Cavalier
Admiral Thorne's Office
2 hours later
Because the Separatists had completed their objective of rescuing Gunray and extracting their assassin, we were safe from another attack. It had taken the engineers aboard my ship a while to repair the hangar doors, but they fixed it.
I had left Drift and the two Jedi in charge of the Titan while General Void, Pinpoint, and I had taken a gunship to Admiral Thorne's flagship, the Cavalier.
We were currently on the bridge and Generals Void and Vassic were catching up with each other while the clone commanders stood respectfully to the side.
That left Admiral Thorne and I to make an AAR with our limited knowledge. We finished rather quickly because we only saw short parts of the fighting. That left us to converse while we waited for the Generals to finish talking.
We were currently discussing our assumptions about our generals' history together like a bunch of teenagers.
"I remember General Vassic once told me a story about her and General Void being stuck on Endor," the brunette said with a smirk on her face.
"Oh," I replied. I was not expecting them to be stuck with a bunch of teddy bears, "Please, do tell."
"They were stuck in an Ewok village for three weeks until they figured out how to jury rig a communicator," she snickered.
"Dang. Three weeks?" I wondered out loud, "Wonder what they did during that time?"
"That's what I'm trying to figure out," said Admiral Thorne with a conspiratorial grin on her face.
I was rather enjoying this time to wind down and talk and I was even more amused when the two Jedi came over and General Void asked, "What are you trying to figure out?"
"Oh, just trying to figure out what occupied your time on Endor, General," was Admiral Thorne's cheeky response.
General Void looked like a deer caught in headlights. He recovered and shot a glare at General Vassic, "Syra, you told her about Endor!?"
"Well. . ." Was General Vassic's reply, "Maybe?"
