A/N Because Ivo Hugh's a flat character, this is his bio in my Thomasverse.
On the Skarloey Railway, Ivo Hugh was built. As a young engine, he relied on the older engines to help him. He was someone driven to carry out his ideas and carry his jobs through, a skeptical, critical, independent, stubborn visionary who looked for patterns and spent as much time thinking as possible. He wanted to learn about his world and understand information. Though seemingly unemtional on the surface, he had feelings inside. One day someone, Fred the diesel, betrayed him and lied to him.
Ivo Hugh, who had shed no tears, now could no longer hold his pain inside. Huge water droplets filled his eyes as he began to cry in his shed with his crew there. He blinked his eyes and asked his driver, "Why's there water in my eyes?". He made no sound, except sniffling, as the tears streamed from his eyes, wetting his cheeks.
Ivo Hugh's driver went to comfort his engine. "Be vulnerable, Ivo Hugh. It's natural and healthy to have tears when you feel strong emotion, like being very sad. Cry, Ivo Hugh. Let it all out and I shall wipe your tears," he said, taking a cloth from his pocket and drying his engine's tears. He gently rubbed his engine's cheeks and softly wiped his tear-wet eyes. He listened attentively, attempting to understand how the little tank engine felt and showed empathy and compassion.
Ivo Hugh cried more, sniffling as fresh tears poured from his eyes. "I've got a flood of tears to shed," he sniffled. He was very sad over being beytrayed and lied to, as his driver, who was comforting him still, had said.
He said, as he continued to wipe the tears away, "The solution to the hurt caused by the lying and betrayal's to cry until you feel better. I shall speak to Mr. Percival, so he can do something about what Fred did to you. I shall patiently support in your pain. I care about you and just want to be supportive and understanding, because I feel very deeply and get overwhelmed by my very powerful emotions. I'm not afraid to cry, but I don't want just anyone to see me, so I just go where those I don't want to see me cry are, when I can't hold back the tears. I'm a loving, caring and understanding person because I'm so connected to my emotions and can't ignore them. I'm very sensitive to my emotions and use them to connect with others and their feelings.". He pressed the cloth to his engine's weeping eyes and wiped all his tears away as best he could, doing his best to provide relief and comfort for his engine, reassure him without being pushy or over-intusive, just be there for him with empathy to provide relief and comfort for his engine without being pushy or over-intrusive, just give attentive and practical comfort.
Ivo Hugh wept and sniffled, then his tears slowed to a stop as he finished his cry. His driver dried his engine's last tears away, patting stray drops from his cheeks and dapping them from his damp eyes until they were dry, then went back to the cab with the sodden cloth. The little engine's crew gave him a drink and he felt better.
As Ivo Hugh had his drink, his driver said, "If you ever want to cry with me around, I shall dry your eyes, rub your cheeks to wipe away your tears and help you feel better."
Ivo Hugh worked on the Skarleoy Railway, guided by the older engines' experience and knowledge until he knew enough to no longer needed mentoring. His fireman retired and he got a new one. Then, his driver retired and was replaced by the fireman, who was getting old to shovel coal. The older engines on the railway died of old age related illnesses or else crashing bad enough, replaced by engines from Mainland railways that dieselized or else by diesels. He worked with these engines, considering some his friends. When another steam engine on the railway died, he quietly sobbed his grief, like he did when his old crew died. All his life, he did his best to be a Really Useful Engine, like the Skarloey engines' closest standard-gauge friend, Thomas said. He could be single-minded and remained a thinker and learner his whole life.
One day, Thomas was at the Steamworks, taking a fellow engine having trouble making steam due to being ill there. The Skarloey engines were there, along with Ivo Hugh's crew and Mr. Percival.
Mr. Percival said, "Ivo Hugh's dead. He didn't survive his crash.". He pulled out a handkerchief and dabbed his eyes. Ivo Hugh's crew sniffed and sobbed into handkerchiefs as well.
Rosie, who had just arrived, pressed Thomas's buffers and the narrow-gauge engines tearfully pressed each other's buffers, with their respective drivers comforting them. Thomas, in a voice filled with wailing sobs and broken by sniffles, gave a speech about Ivo Hugh. His driver pressed a cloth to his eyes as the tank engine gave his speech.
"I-Ivo H-Hugh w-was a-a R-Really U-Useful E-Engine," Thomas said, with tears in his eyes. "W-We sh-shall m-miss h-him. W-We m-must c-carry o-on a-and b-be R-Really U-Useful E-Engines, th-though w-we gr-grieve. I-I'm br-broken-hearted a-at th-the l-loss o-of m-my a-and ou-our fr-friend.". He wailed his broken heart out until he could weep no more.
The Skarloey Railway was closed to allow the engines time to grieve and have a memorial service for Ivo Hugh. It was held outdoors in a place where all his friends could go. Thomas, as the Skarloey engines' closest standard-gauge friend was allowed to attend and Rosie came for buffers to press. The more emotional engines, including Thomas, shed a great many tears. Charity, one of most sensitive narrow-gauge engines, had a severe anxiety cry, weeping non-stop.
The railway reopened and Charlotte, a little diesel, came to replace Ivo Hugh. She was quiet and sort of shy, creative, sweet and sensitive, and had a playful side. One day, she got overwhelmed with emotion and began to cry, heartfelt sobbing and she sniffled loudly. Her face was wet with tears. "How come I've got watery eyes?" she said.
Charlotte's driver knew she was unhappy and went to comfort her."There, there, Charlotte," he said, taking a cloth from his pocket and drying her tears. He rubbed her sodden cheeks and wiped her tear-filled eyes. "Go ahead and let it all out. Cry and I shall wipe away your tears. Crying's what you're doing because of your emotion.". His voice was filled with empathy and compassion. He listened attentively and tried to understand how she felt.
Charlotte cried some more, letting out another big sob. She sniffled again, hard, coughed as she choked on her tears and hiccupped. She gasped and gulped, shaking with sobs as she wept non-stop, letting her driver comfort her. "I-I h-hurt i-in m-my h-heart," she said. "Th-the fl-floodgates a-are o-open, c-causing a d-damburst o-of s-sorrow. Th-the w-way f-for th-the p-pain t-to e-escape i-is m-my e-eyes." Every word was another loud sob.
He said, as he continued to wipe her tears away, "Cry it out and find the relief and comfort a cry offers. I shall patiently support you, giving my reassurance until you feel better. Like you, I feel things very deeply and, because I know what it's like to be overwhelmed by very powerful emotions, I'm a sensitive, understanding, loving and caring person. I'm here for you in your pain, just to dry your eyes." He did his best to provide reassuarance and empathy without being overbearing as he pressed the cloth to her eyes, letting her sob into it and wiped all her tears away as best he could.
Charlotte sobbed and sobbed, tears pouring from her eyes, not once stopping until she had no more to cry. Her driver dried her last tears away, wiping her cheeks and eyes until they were dry. She smiled, feeling better, as her driver refilled her radiator.
With a new arrival to take Ivo Hugh's work, life on Sodor took on a more nornal rhythm and his friends recovered as best they could from their grief.
A/N Ivo Hugh, when he's crying over the betrayal and lying, feels deeply sad, so, due to being only sad, his tears are quiet. Charlotte's a water-cooled diesel.
