Strange...
Eames still hadn't arrived.
He'd left a little bit earlier than her, so that no one would suspect anything at their place of work, but now it was getting to be quite a while.
And as the minutes ticked by, so did the hours.
And Goren knew that Eames wasn't taking this long to drop Nathan off at school, and to meet him right afterwards at work.
Something was wrong.
And he was starting to get seriously worried.
He'd texted her, but hadn't gotten any response.
Which was rather odd, coming from Eames.
So what was going on.
But strangely enough...
Goren couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding in the back of his mind.
So, unable to stand it any longer, and starting to go crazy with worry, he pushed his chair away from his desk, stood up and headed straight for Deakins' office.
He absolutely had to ask Deakins to go to Eames and see what was going on.
But first, he would go to his son's school to ask him questions.
For who knows, Nathan would know what was going on.
And tell him why his mother had been so delayed.
And that maybe he wasn't worrying about much at all.
At least, that's what he hoped.
- I'm sorry... But Nathan Eames didn't come.
Pardon.
What do you mean, Nathan Eames hadn't come to school.
The headmistress must have been mistaken.
Eames wouldn't have done such a thing.
She wouldn't have made Nathan miss school for any reason.
He knew her well enough.
So what did it mean.
And what the hell was going on.
He still had this bad feeling, which was redoubling and giving him knots in his stomach.
And the way the situation was turning out, he was seriously starting to panic.
If Eames hadn't taken Nathan to school, something bad must have happened.
But what.
He absolutely had to reach her.
And find out what was going on.
But most of all, he hoped she would answer his calls at least once.
- Thank you very much.
Goren left the headmistress, took the phone in his hand, pressed Eames' number and put it to his ear, hoping to have Eames on the other end of the line.
Name of God...
Eames hadn't answered any of his calls.
And now Goren was going out of his mind.
It wasn't like Eames to leave him unanswered.
Not since he'd come back, and not since Nathan had been around.
The only time he hadn't heard from him was when the FBI had put him in witness protection, changing his state, his name and his life for his own survival.
But today it was over, all the members of the Russian mafia who wanted to harm her had been arrested.
So she was safe and could return to her normal life.
So what could have happened that there was no sign of life from either Eames or her son.
It was monstrous not to know.
And Goren was really going to go crazy if he didn't find out what was going on.
Arriving at the door to Eames' apartment, Goren raised his finger to the doorbell, but stopped as his gaze was drawn to the door, not the lock, which wasn't locked at all.
So, not hesitating for a second, he pushed open the door.
- Alex... Nathan...
But Goren stopped dead in his tracks, as if in shock at what he was about to discover.
No, it couldn't be.
He must have been having a nightmare.
And he was about to wake up.
And yet...
In front of him, there was nothing.
All the furniture was gone.
The apartment had been emptied.
My God...
No.
Everything but this.
Eames wouldn't leave.
Not like this.
And without any explanation.
And especially not at a time when they had decided to finally be a family and live together.
There had to be a reason.
So Goren rushed into every room in the apartment, opened every door, but nothing.
Then the panic redoubled, the heartbeat pounding in his brain.
But it was in Eames' bedroom, in that empty room at last, that he found a letter on the floor with his name written on it in Eames' handwriting.
So Goren walked over to the letter, crouched down, held out his trembling hands and took the paper between his fingers, which he opened.
At Eames' first words, Goren's heart stopped beating.
''Bobby, first of all, forgive me.
But the FBI came looking for us urgently.
One of the Russian mafia members they thought they'd arrested was the wrong one, and so our son's life, and mine, are in danger again.
And I had no choice but to follow them.
I sincerely regret it.
If I could have done otherwise, I would have stayed by your side.
And I would have shared your life, which would have made me the happiest woman, as well as our son, the happiest of children.
Nathan adored you.
And that was the only thing he wanted, to be with his dad, and for us to be a family.
And because of me, I hurt you both.
I apologize again for everything Bobby.
But I was really happy all those nights in your arms, and I won't forget them, and will keep them in my heart.
Thanks to you, I felt alive again, wanted, and above all loved.
Your Alex.
PS: I loved you like I never thought I'd be able to love again.''
My God...
No.
Anything but that.
Eames and his son had been rushed away by the FBI, in witness protection, because they'd arrested the wrong guy.
His face red with anger, and tears streaming down his cheeks in sadness, Goren, helpless to what was happening, clutched Eames's letter in his hands with all his might, crumpling it up.
- Alex... I couldn't even tell you how much I loved you... And then you left.
Eames was gone.
And so was his son.
At that moment, Goren realized that he had lost everything.
That his life had been destroyed.
And nothing could fix it.
No.
It wouldn't.
He wouldn't let it happen.
Eames and his son were his reason for living.
And he needed them in his life.
So he wouldn't let the FBI do it this time.
He wouldn't let them.
Goren felt a violent rage welling up inside him.
He stuffed the crumpled Eames letter into his pocket, stood up, and without missing a beat headed for the apartment exit.
This time, he'd do something.
And he would stop the FBI from taking away not only the woman he loved, but also his son.
And whatever the cost, even if it meant losing everything, he would get Eames and Nathan back.
Proud of his decision, he climbed into his suv and, not wasting a second, drove off in the direction of the FBI offices.
