Disclaimer: I don't own the Maze Runner
She continued to watch them. She didn't know the facts, but she knew he wasn't here, and that in itself was enough to assume.
She wasn't sure, however, what had happened. And before she judged either of them, she wanted answers. She was well aware they, or at least the Asian boy, knew she was watching them. It was quite obvious, she had stopped hiding the fact around a week ago, decided she might get answers if she was more obvious about it.
She continued to watch them during breakfast, lunch and dinner. Harriet, her best friend who had been leader of their Glade with her as second in command, had noticed as well, but when she tried to ask about it Sonya simply said they were friends of her brother.
Her brother who wasn't here. The one she remembered throughout everything. And that boy, Thomas, was there with him on the last night before they were sent up into the Mazes. Was her brother's best friend. And she wanted to know what he knew. How her brother had, inevitably, died. Or if he was left somewhere out there to fend for himself.
At the moment they were seated around a campfire, eating dinner. Everyone was chatting like they hadn't all nearly died and lost just about everyone they were close to.
She was sitting off to the side, watching them.
The Asian boy was talking to the head chef, Frypan, he didn't notice her at first. Too busy talking with his friend, but then as he turned she caught his eye. She motioned for him to come and stood and walked away, not looking back to see if he followed, she knew he would, he wasn't the only one sneaking out at night back before the Maze.
She walked to a small wooded area behind the small huts, and out of earshot from the others. She turned once they were far enough, and as she had anticipated, he stood there looking at her as if she were a mystical creature.
"Why'd you bring me here? And why have you been spying on us for the past week?" The boy asked, she smirked internally, she had indeed not been noticed spying before she wanted him to.
"I." She started in her British accent she cherished. "I have some questions for you, and particularly your Brunet friend, Thomas."
"Then why didn't you ask him out here?" He asked, a hint of annoyance traveling through his masculine voice.
"Because, I don't trust him..yet." She answered cautiously, wording her words carefully.
"And you do me?" He asked, suspicion shining in his black eyes.
"I know of someone who trusted you greatly, and your personality doesn't seem like the type to..do things that I have a suspicion he might have done." She said, again treading carefully, she wanted answers and she wasn't about to lose her chance. He shook his head.
"Well?" He asked, clearly waiting for her to speak.
"I want to know how you knew Newt?" She said, he visibly winced at the use of his name.
"Why?" He asked, setting his expression in stone. She decided not to beat around the bush any longer.
"He was my brother." She answered. Silence.
"How do you know that?" He asked, eyes narrowed into slits.
"I got the swipe removed, I remember, you're Minho? Right?" She asked, she was sure she'd seen him with her brother.. before.
"He's gone."
The words, even anticipated, cut at her like a knife. She took a deep breath.
"I think that's bloody obvious, I want to know what happened, I know he wasn't Immune, I assume he must've-"
"He did." Minho cut her off, she took a deep breath, wishing it had been a lie, another of WICKED's lies, she didn't wish that fate on anyone, not even Beth. "We took a burg, flew to Denver, and he didn't want to come, didn't want to infect anyone, the selfless shank. Some people went and took him away to the Crank Palace, when we went to go get him, he was already having.. problems. The shank was trying though, you could see that, he told us to leave him. When we didn't want to, he got really upset, even threatened to shoot us with the launcher he'd somehow gotten off some guard, he was furious with Thomas for reasons I don't know, finally we had to leave, and..that's the last time I saw him."
The silence stretched out for a long while before either of them said anything. She broke first.
"Bloody hell I'm sorry." She said, as she could tell that must've brought back bad memories. He winced at her use of words and she felt worse, of course, he was always saying 'bloody.' She sighed before speaking again.
"Thank you, for telling me, I..you guys were all friends before the Maze too." She said, hoping to give this boy an ounce of closure. He gave a weak smile.
"Yeah?" He asked, she nodded.
"You guys would always sneak out at night, well until..that's not important, but you guys were really close then too. All of you, you, Thomas, Alby, and Newt." She said sadly, he winced again at the name. She looked back up and tried to smile despite her breaking heart. Her brother, the same boy who had hugged her tight as the people who'd shot mum and dad came, the same boy who snuck out of his dorm at night just to see her, even though he didn't know she saw him back, the boy who risked everything to see her one last time before the maze,.. was gone forever.
