"So I see you brought Tex along with you?" Her father, the president, asked as they moved inside. The bags were brought in by all manner of people who quickly and quietly moved them upstairs and out of sight. He had questions about where they went but he decided not to ask. They would get to that later.
Rachel nodded. "Well, you know, security and all, but besides Tex didn't have anywhere to go for Thanksgiving, so he decided to spend it with us, and that's nice." She said with a smile on her face. Must have been some nap, because she got over the initial shock of the car being there at a normal hour on a Saturday when other people were up and about.
The president did not look convinced. Neither did Tom for that matter, but they both smiled at Rachel. "You know, it is nice. To extend our little thanksgiving a little bit. Mrs. Scott will be thrilled to have another guest to dote on." Tom said as he winked at Rachel. Rachel went through to see her mom and the President left the room behind her. It was him and Tom. "Why'd you really come, man?" He asked.
"I'm not lying. I didn't want to stay at the school but I didn't want to go home. And sure as hell, didn't want to go to friendsgiving with the college crew." He said as he looked after Rachel and then looked back to Tom. "Besides, what's it to you? Rachel was cool with it."
"Alright, but you're going to have to go out shopping. Mrs. Scott needs some help with that and she would normally have one of her staff go out for her, but since you're here, we might as well put you to work. And it'll look better for the American taxpayer, win win. Maybe take Rachel out with you too. That way you can really do your work."
Hours later, he and Rachel were at a grocery store with a long list of things that needed to be gotten for the holiday. And they were at a fancy store. The kind of store where people would definitely know who the President's daughter was because they had the kind of free time that allowed them to be permanently glued to some sort of device and have opinions on what the President's daughter wore.
He gave her the cart and he took the list. He didn't think anything bad was going to happen in the grocery store, but he preferred that she had something to defend herself with in the event that something did happen. It was his job to defend her first and foremost. And he wasn't giving up on that job, but it always paid to have an extra level of security around the client. Not that she was just a client. She was a friend.
The walk through the store was pretty smooth, except for all the gawking that people did. Rachel hid herself the best she could but people still stared. And they took pictures of them. Many of which Rachel ruined by putting her hand directly in the line of the picture, but there had to be thousands of cameras in this grocery store and they definitely hadn't seen them all.
Before checking out, he looked at her. "I didn't think it would be this bad. Are you okay? I could just kill Tom for suggesting you come out with me." He fumed.
Rachel laughed. "That would be just like Tom," She said.
The rest of the week was pretty quiet. He and Rachel spent a lot of time together in the solarium, where Rachel told him some of the fun facts about the white house. He didn't really care about the facts but it's what she talked about and so he did his best to remain as interested as he could. They'd stuck him in guest room that was fairly close to Rachel's room and he just thought about it being different than the dorm. He was so used to having her close.
Then it was time for the main event. Thanksgiving. He woke up early because he was excited about the whole thing. Everyone seemed to be excited about the whole thing. There was a flurry of activity around the whole residence, he tried not to get in the way of it.
He went to the kitchen where Rachel sat at the counter looking at a pile of muffins and smiling. "That is an excessive amount of muffins," He said.
She shrugged. "We're used to a big crowd. Mom's gotten a little carried away this year, since it's just going to be us, you, and maybe Tom for breakfast. You should get some coffee, it's been made fresh," She said as she picked up her cup as if to show him. He thought it was cute. But he did indeed get coffee and he picked a muffin from the mountain of muffins and sat down beside her, enjoying the breakfast that they both had in peace. This was actually pretty much what heaven felt like he decided.
Eventually, they picked up for the Solarium, but not before refilling on coffee and stealing an extra muffin or two each. It was parade time. And of course, the time would soon come to watch the president pardon a turkey. Quite famously, both birds would not be eaten. And they would go to live on some farm not far from where they were born. The president made a corny joke or two and then they could focus on the parade.
The parade absolutely took Rachel's breath away. He thought it was a cute tradition, but she was genuinely enraptured by the whole thing. Something he hadn't taken seriously enough when she told him about it and a thing that gave him a bit of a chuckle, but he kept it to himself. By the time, the thing was done, it was about time for the football game, something a bit less her speed. And she looked around the room, a little uncomfortable about the whole thing.
"What's that about?" He asked.
She shrugged. "Just don't know why men throwing a ball is so fun," She said.
"Come on," He said. "We go to college. We go to a college with a football team. We should have taken you to a football game." He bemoaned. "You'd get more enjoyment out of a live game, but it's about the comradery."
"It is actually pretty good for that," Said Tom as he entered the room. He looked at Rachel with kind eyes. "If you'd like though, Mrs. Scott has requested your help in the kitchen. And Tex can go with you if you'd like."
Rachel shook her head. "Tex is our guest here, Tom. He's not actually working," She said in a pointed tone. "And you know my mom wants you to call her by her first name,"
"And respectfully," Tom said, "She knows I'm not going to do that," He said to the the second position. When he looked at her a little longer, he acknowledged the first. "Then, Tex and I, will enjoy the game without you and Mrs. Scott."
