So, I wasn't going to include this part of the story originally, but I was watching an old cartoon from my childhood, and inspiration struck.
Hope you all enjoy!
…
The next morning, Poppy held a meeting with the citizens of TrollsTopia to discuss the situation with Sunshine.
"So, to recap what happened last night," she began, the child nestled in her arms, "This little troll has been separated from her family. It doesn't look like they're anywhere in TrollsTopia, so she must've ended up a long way from home." She, along with several others, looked at Sunshine with pity as she said this.
"Branch and I are going to spend today letting everyone else in Troll Kingdom know about Sunshine," Poppy announced, "Maybe we'll track her parents down today, maybe we won't. But we're sure gonna try."
Stepping down from the stage, she approached Branch, whispering reassuring words into Sunshine's ear. "Come on, Branch," she said, "I'll meet you at the balloon."
"Hey, whoa, whoa," Branch protested, taking Sunshine from her, "it is way too dangerous for her to come with us."
Poppy looked at him with slight disappointment. "Branch, I know you want to keep her safe, but she needs to go with us. Just in case we come across her family, or someone who knows them."
Branch looked at the baby's innocent little face and knew that Poppy was right about one thing: he wanted to keep her safe. And that was something he couldn't guarantee on this mission.
"I'm not risking it, Poppy," he sighed, "I don't want her to end up in any danger."
Begrudgingly, Poppy agreed to leave Sunshine in Holly's care until they returned. "Have fun with Holly, Sunny," she said as she handed the baby to Holly. Almost immediately, Sunny began whining and reaching out to her and Branch.
"Poppy and Branch no leave."
Poppy gave Sunny a sad smile and stroked her hair. "Oh, sweetie, we're not leaving you," she reassured her, "not forever. We'll be back as soon as we can, okay?" She gave her a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek before hopping onto the balloon with Branch.
As they slowly floated over Troll Kingdom, Poppy could tell Branch had about a million thoughts racing through his head. "I just can't help but worry right now, Poppy," he said, answering her question before she even asked. "What if no one else knows anything about Sunny's family? What if they do know but refuse to tell us? What if…" He sighed, hating the notion that just came to him…
"What if her family abandoned her on purpose?"
Poppy gasped and placed a hand over her heart. "Branch," she exclaimed, "that's a terrible thing to think! No troll would ever consider abandoning their egg."
Branch sighed and looked down at the lands below them. "It could still be a possibility," he said, "wherever she ends up, I just hope she's happy."
He suddenly found Poppy's arms wrapped around his torso. "Aww, Branch," she said, "it's so sweet that you care that much. But I'm sure everything will work out in the long run. Someone is bound to know where Sunny's family is."
Admittedly, Branch was a bit surprised with himself; Sunshine hadn't been in his life for more than a day, and he already felt concerned for her well-being.
He hoped her parents were just as caring as he was.
…
"Well," Poppy said once the balloon touched back down in TrollsTopia, "It took the better part of a day, but I think we got the word out to as many trolls as we could."
"Now all we've got to do is wait," added Branch. When they spotted Holly talking to Val and Demo, they noticed that she no longer had Sunshine with her.
"Uh, hey, Holly," Branch asked once he'd approached the group, "remember that baby we left with you? Where is she?"
"Oh, don't worry, Branch," Holly replied, laughing off his concern, "I had a bit of an emergency at Country Corral, so I asked Val to keep an eye on her."
"And then something else came up," Val continued, "so I pawned her off on Demo."
"Long story short," said Demo, she's up in Vibe Town with R and B."
Branch sighed in exasperation and relief upon hearing this. Why didn't they just start with that part, he thought. "That's a relief, I guess."
"Yeah," Poppy agreed, "at least we know she's with someone we trust. Those girls can handle anything."
As soon as she said it, though, a rumbling noise could be heard from Vibe Town. The trolls watched as the spaceship began to shake violently before shooting out a flurry of bubbles.
One of which had a little passenger inside.
Sunshine squealed with delight as she flew through the air, Rhythm and Blues trying their hardest to catch her. "C'mon, get back here," Rhythm shouted, revving up her rocket boots.
"Almost gotcha," Blues yelled, reaching out to grab the little troll. Unfortunately, her sister was moving to do the same, and the two ended up crashing into each other, plummeting to the ground in a heap as Sunshine continued to float around.
"What happened," Poppy exclaimed as she helped the two Funk trolls to their feet.
"We swear," Rhythm assured, "we didn't let the kid out of our sight once."
"But apparently," Blues added, "she likes to play with buttons."
Branch watched in horror as Sunshine began to float higher, on the verge of disappearing past the trees. Despite the potential danger she was in, she looked like she was having the time of her life. "Look, Poppy, look Branch," she shouted, waving down at her caretakers, "I flying!"
Branch's heart was practically in his throat as he immediately gave chase. "Hang on, Sunny," he shouted, swinging through the trees by his hair, "Branch is coming!"
No matter how far he swung or how high he leapt, the bubble managed to move just out of his reach every time. What if it popped while she was up that high? What if there was no one close enough to catch her?
Finally, he managed to bounce off of a mushroom at just the right angle to grab the baby just as the bubble burst. Branch held her tightly as they fell to the ground, landing in a lake of glitter.
When Branch emerged, he shook what glitter he could off of him and desperately started digging through the lake. "Sunny," he cried, "Sunny, can you hear me?!"
A giggle above him brought his search to a halt, and he glanced up to find Sunshine poking out of his hair. "Hee hee, Branch silly," she laughed. He let out a relieved laugh as he hugged her.
"You're okay, Sunny," he said, more so to reassure himself than her, "You're safe."
Throughout this whole ordeal, Sunshine never stopped laughing, completely oblivious to the panic she had caused Branch. "Again," she said, "Go again!"
Branch looked at her with a stern but caring expression as they made their way back home. "No, Sunshine," he told her, "you are not doing that again. You scared me to death."
"It not scary," she replied, confused, "it fun."
"It may have been fun," he said, "but it was also very dangerous." He hugged her tighter as he continued, "I don't know what I would have done if you'd gotten hurt. Or worse."
"I sorry, Branch," Sunshine said, tears welling up in her eyes. It broke his heart to see her emotions change so suddenly. He knew she hadn't meant to scare him, but there were so many things that could have happened if he hadn't been there.
"Aw, don't be sorry, Sunny," he said, swiping her tears away with his thumb, "just promise me you'll be careful from now on, okay?"
Sunshine nodded and hugged him again. "I promise," she replied, yawning. Not long after, Branch heard faint snoring coming from the child, their little adventure having tuckered her out. He chuckled, patting her on the back.
"I've got a promise to make, too," he whispered, "I'm going to do whatever it takes to protect you, Sunshine."
…
This might have been kind of rushed, but it was a bit of a last minute idea, and I'm not very good at writing action sequences.
At any rate, I'm just happy to contribute to the fandom.
