Chapter Two: An eventful day
Frederick stood in the foggy outdoors, watching the Jewish Prisoners be lined up for the firing squad. He clasped his hands behind his back, a feeling of dread washing over him as he saw the sobs and cries of the people being lined up for an inevitable doom.
He stood there and looked into the sky. A Sergeant walked up. "Sir." Frederick nodded without turning his gaze from the sky. "Sir, shall I order the execution?" Frederick gave a light nod and numbly waved his hand in a yes gesture.
After the Sergeant walked to the men, Frederick caught eye of the Jews, they all looked at him for help. "Please!" one of them cried. "Spare us!" another said.
Frederick looked at them before him, tears began to well in his eyes as they watched. "I'm sorry." He said quietly. "There is nothing I can do. I am bound by my orders."
They watched him walk away, still pleading, Frederick walked into the doorway not looking back, as he heard the Sergeant shout his orders. He put his arm to the wall and put his face to it, waiting for it. "Present!" the Sergeant ordered.
Frederick's knuckles turned white. "FIRE!" the Sound of rifles shot out, and he shivered and gasped. again. "FIRE!" More shots. Tears began to roll down his cheeks as he heard the screaming of a woman being shot.
Minutes later, he sat in his office with his staff officers. Things were silent, but the German officers could feel the Dangerous heat coursing from Frederick's body filling the whole room.
Major Earnensburg cleared his throat. "What's done is done sir." Frederick didn't look up, but he said. "Are you blind Major?" he whispered icely. Everyone shifted uncomfortably. "No." Earnensburg said. "I can see, I see what we did as a duty, however, you seem to be blind and differ your opinion." Frederick looked up at him with Cold, Red eyes, he looked another ten years older. "I didn't see what we did out there as a duty." he hissed, but his voice began to get louder. "I see it - AS MURDER!" Frederick stood up slamming his desk. "AND I AM GUILTY OF IT!"
Earnensburg, Königsmar and Halfred cowered at their superiors outburst. "You think it's duty Mr. Earnensburg do you?" Frederick scoffed. "I tell you what it is." he loomed over the three officers and shadowed over them.
"WE ARE BEING COMMANDED BY A MADMAN DICTATOR, TO KILL INNOCENT PEOPLE!" Halfred piped up. "They're Jews sir-" "THEY ARE PEOPLE, AND WE ARE KILLING THEM!" "But-" Halfred tried to say, before Königsmar cut him off. "Silence Lieutenant, the Colonel is right, now silence!" Königsmar stared down Halfred who cowered before him.
Frederick walked passed them and stormed out of his office into the fresh air.
As he walked through the streets of Rotterdam, people, expecting to see a mean ruthless Garrison officer, instead they saw a man in a uniform, Crying uncontrollably into a wall. The people were trying not to pay attention as they walked by, but it was surprising, Frederick didn't care.
'I don't deserve to live.' he thought.
"Frederick?" Someone tapped on his shoulder. It was Peter. "Are you alright buddy?" Frederick stared at him. "No." Peter looked worried. "Come on." he said. "I'll buy you a drink." "I will not drink." Frederick seethed.
"Come on Fredr-" Peter was saying, until Frederick started shouting, and got everyone's attention. "DON'T YOU REALIZE!? I HAVE INNOCENT BLOOD ON MY HANDS, AND I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE! THIRTY-ONE JEWS WERE KILLED AT MY ORDERS TODAY! AND IT IS HORRIBLE TO EVEN HEAR THE GUNSHOTS AND SCREAMING OF INNOCENT PEOPLE! NOW LEAVE ME ALONE BEFORE I HURT SOMEONE!" everyone stared at the red-faced Colonel with shock as he stormed off into the alleyway.
After about ten minutes of calming down from his shouting, he heard screaming in a nearby alleyway. Frederick ran in that direction, he turned a corner and saw a German soldier, his German Soldier, slapping a woman as he held her by the collar. "No, stop!" she screamed.
Frederick's anger was rekindled and he grabbed the Soldier from behind and slammed him against the wall. The woman who was beaten fell back in shock as she saw Frederick pin her attacker.
"What is the meaning of this soldier?" Frederick barked. The soldier said. "She's a Jew sir!" anger boiled inside Frederick's head as he heard this. "That does not justify to hurt someone!" "She's a rotten Jew who gets what she deserves!" the young man said back. "She is a human being!" Frederick yelled in his face.
"She is a scum!"
Hearing those words, Frederick slapped the soldier in the face. "I have something for you." Frederick spat as he pulled out a note and pen and scribbled on it. after he finished, he smiled sourly at the soldier and put the note in the soldiers pocket. "Congratulations!" Frederick snarled at him. "You are the first person I get to Court-martial as commander here. Now report to your company officer and meet me tonight at 1600." with that, the soldier ran off.
Frederick turned around to see the woman curled in a ball crying. He knelt down next to her. "Miss, would you mind getting up for me?" the Woman looked up, she had Chocolate hair and brown eyes, and delicate creamy white skin.
Frederick held out his hand to her, she looked at his hand, then at him. Reluctantly, she took it and he helped her up. "I know you're a Jew." Frederick said.
The woman tensed up as tears began to fall again. "No, no! please don't kill me, no!" she tried to struggle out of his grasp.
Frederick grabbed her other arm calmly. "I am not going to kill you, or torture you, or arrest you in anyway." at these words, she stopped struggling, her eyes lit up. "Really?" he nodded. "I don't want to kill anyone, even though, I have killed many Jews, I hate it."
She looked at him. "You have killed some of my people?" He nodded sadly. "Yes, I actually killed a lot today, I couldn't bare it anymore so I came here and heard you screaming."
The woman looked intently at me. "So, you don't hate us?" she asked. "No." Frederick said. "I don't hate you or your people like others do." She sighed in relief. "Well thank you for saving me Soldier."
Frederick tipped his Officer cap and smiled brighter than he had in a long long time. He had to admit, she was quite pretty. "Well." Frederick said. "Can I have your name Miss?"
She looked at him, his looks seemed to be in his forties, but when he smiled, he looked younger. "Jane Loviett." she said quietly. Frederick nodded. "Wonderful to meet you, Jane Loviett. My name is Colonel Frederick Aurburg, erm, I'm the new Commander of the Garrison in these parts."
Jane looked surprised. "You are the new Garrison Commander?" she asked bewildered. Frederick nodded again. "Yes, but do not worry, I'm not like the last one, he was a madman."
Jane let out a shaky laugh as she heard this.
"I will need your documents though, since I'm here." Frederick said glumly. "it's my third day in command so I need your documents just to confirm if you're Jew or not." he paused. "I hope you don't mind."
Jane thought for a moment. "If you promise not to arrest or kill me." she said in a serious tone. Frederick raised his hands. "I promise to not arrest you or kill you when I see your documents.
She pulled out the papers and he examined them, as he was examining he looked older all of the sudden. "Your name is Jane Loviett, and you are 69% Jew, your 26 years old, you've lived in Holland all your life." Frederick read a little more until he looked up from her papers.
"At this point, I should be arresting you." he mused. Jane caught her breath, getting ready to run, she should never of trusted a Nazi.
Then Frederick smiled. "But I made a promise, and I'll keep it." Jane smiled back, she felt relieved that this German was being merciful to her, even though she was a Jew.
However, she was still puzzled. "How old are you Colonel? 46, 47?" she asked. Fredrick chuckled as he leaned against the wall. "No. People misinterpret my age through my looks, I'm actually 34 years old."
Jane was shocked. "No offense, but how did that happen?" Frederick's expression darkened. "I used to match my age very well, untill - until a slight, emotional change differed everything." "What change was that?" Jane asked.
Frederick looked away. "Nothing, I might tell you if we meet again, and don't worry, I will not lay a finger on you."
Jane looked up at him, he was smiling broadly, in fact, he looked younger now, and more handsome. "I don't understand, why are you doing this for me, a Jew?"
The Colonel's expression turned to pain. "Um, let's just say." Frederick said, his eyes beginning to darken, he looked away so that he wouldn't look weak to her. "Er, as you know, I have killed some Jews already, and it's really not easy to bear such a burden. Well, anyway, good day madam." and with that Frederick tipped his hat and walked off without another word.
Jane stared after him, she should be scared, but, she had a feeling of safety when the Colonel was around.
Frederick was in deep thought too. 'My, she is pretty, I haven't felt like that since - since I met Alexandria.'
With that thought, the Colonel turned a corner, happier than he had been in years.
There we go! Already getting romantic eh? I expect to make things better and better. I hope you keep reading everyone!
