Chapter Three: Stricken

Jane Loviett walked back to her hiding place. She was shocked, confused, and happy all at the same time. She thought all Nazis were bad, maybe she was wrong, all she knew was that this German Commander let her go, and my, he really did look handsome and dreamy.

Jane didn't think he looked ugly like he said people thought. She liked his straight shaven face, the white on the hairs of his sideburns while the rest was black, he seemed perfectly fit and strangely tall, and he seemed to look like a brilliant light when he laughed or smiled, his grey eyes were like a storm ready to wash away all of her doubts and fears.

She was now in her house, looking through the window up at the sky as her thoughts were still on that German Colonel that she was supposed to hate, but she couldn't.

"Jane!" A voice called. It was her mother, Emma Loviett. "Over here mother!" Jane called back. the door opened to reveal her mother and her sister Rotelle.

"Jane Loviett, why did you leave the house? Mrs. Dorenson is risking her life to protect us, and now you put us in this much trouble."

"I'm sorry mother." Jane lowered her head.

Mrs. Loviett stood for a moment then hugged her. "Well, at least you're alright and safe-" then she saw a bruise on her arm. "Where did you get this?" her mother looked sternly at her daughter.

Jane was cornered. "I - I got attacked by a Nazi soldier." she said quietly. Both her mother and Rotelle gasped. "How did you get away?" Mother asked worriedly.

Jane shook her head. "He would've beat me to death, I wouldn't of gotten away, but a German officer walked ran over, grabbed the soldier and pinned him to the wall."

Mrs. Loviett's eyes widened.

"I didn't hear much because I was crying, but I heard him slap the soldier in the face then he ran off. After that, the Commander helped me up and apologized, he knew I was a Jew, but he told me he killed more than enough of them to bear."

Mrs. Loviett was silent for a moment until she asked. "What is the commanders name?" Jane looked out the window. "Colonel Frederick Aurburg. He said he's the new Commander of the local Garrison."

Mrs. Loviett still wasn't convinced. "Did he threaten you in any way?" She shook her head. "I was still scared, but he seemed to notice it, because he said: 'Don't worry, I am not going to kill you.' and well, that's it."

Mrs. Loviett nodded. "Well, he seems kind, but don't get too comfortable with the Colonel if you ever meet him again. I still don't trust him." Jane nodded slowly. "Yes mother."

Two days later, we find our dear Colonel Frederick Aurburg standing outside his office looking into a spring sunset. My, it was cold for a spring day.

As Frederick looked out, he couldn't help but think of a certain Jewish Woman he met two days ago. He still thought she was mighty pretty. 'I barely even know her, besides her name.' he thought to himself.

Yes he was smitten by Jane Loviett, a 69% Jew. But the past two nights, he would close his eyes only to see hers.

Frederick closed his eyes, he was desperately in love, but how could he Marry her let alone have dinner with her, she was a Jew, and he was a German officer, he couldn't just ask a Jew to dinner like that. "Colonel sir." a voice said from behind.

Frederick sighed. "Yes Mr. Königsmar?" he asked. Königsmar was over 20 years older than Frederick, he was a fresh Veteran of World War One, most of his hair was white accept for the back hairs that still held some blonde.

"Oh, nothing much sir. I was just wondering if you would like to have some company out here?" Frederick thought for a moment then nodded.

"Oh, here, I got you your coat Colonel, it's mighty cold tonight." Frederick smiled at the old Capitan as he took the Trench coat from his grip. "Thank you Erich." (Yes Königsmar's first name is Erich [P.S, Erich is German, so it actually pronounced Er-i-c])

Königsmar put a Cigar to his mouth and lighted it with a match. After he swatted the fire out of the match, he reached into his pocket, pulled out another Cigar and held it out to Frederick. "Would the Colonel like a Zigarre?"

Frederick shook head. "No thank you." The old man stuffed it back in his pocket and shrugged. "Suit yourself sir."

After a moment of silence, Königsmar broke it. "Verflixed it's cold tonight." (P.S, Verflixed means Darn in German.) Frederick didn't say anything, but just stared out into the Dark Purple sky, with the last bit of orange fading away. Königsmar finally understood what he was thinking about. He took the Cigar out of his mouth. "So, who's the girl?" He smiled as he got Frederick out of his trance as he looked over his shoulder.

"What?" he asked stupidly.

Erich chuckled and shook his head. "Come on, Frederick, I'm twenty years older than you, I've fought in the Great War, I've been in love with a woman before. Now, who's the girl?"

Frederick hesitated. "I will only tell you this. Tell no one okay?" Erich nodded. "Good." he took a deep breath. "It is a girl." Erich applauded. "I knew it, I knew it!" Frederick held out his hand which silenced the old man once more.

"This is more serious than you think Mr. Königsmar." Frederick said. Erich nodded. "Go on.

Frederick took a deep breath again. "Erich ... she's a Jew." Dawning spread across Mr. Königsmar's now wide-eyed face. He slowly broke into a grin. "I see now why you didn't want me to tell anybody, you have a forbidden love for a Jew. Just like in the stories." Erich started chuckling.

Frederick was still serious. "Listen Erich, I only told you this because you sympathize with Jews like me, I don't want anyone else to know this, because most of our people hate them." Königsmar nodded. "I understand, your secret is safe with me."

Frederick felt relieved, but he needed time alone. "Thank you Erich, but right now, I need to take a walk." Königsmar saluted. "Understood sir." Frederick saluted back.

He then walked into the lawn of the base, heading for the barbed wire gate.

As Frederick left, Captain Königsmar chuckled quietly. "Forbidden Love, just like in the fairytales."

To tell you the truth, I wanted to have Frederick be posted in German occupied France, where He and a woman from the French resistance fall in love, but I decided at the last minute to do a Duch Holocaust one instead. anyway, keep reading everyone!
