Chapter Four: Out of rations?
The same night Frederick confessed his love for Jane to Erich Königsmar, Jane and her family was at a crisis.
Mrs. Dorenson had walked into their hiding place the two days before, to explain a perilous situation. "We are running out of food, we have to cut rations."
"Why?" Her mother asked.
"Now that Germany is invading the Soviet Union, the Nazi government has begun to lessen the amount of money stamps to us just recently, as such they are putting all their money in the war effort, which means less money for citizens."
Rotelle moaned. "Those Nazis. why can't they just stop!?"
"I'm not sure." said Mrs. Dorenson glumly. "But I need to feed myself as much as I need to feed you, I've been spending most of my money on you and your family lately, I'm sorry."
"It will be alright, I'm sure." Mrs. Loviett said, trying to lighten their spirits, though, she was also trying not to show worry.
The next day showed that they were, indeed running out of food. Already, they were given one, maybe two muffins each fir breakfast. When lunch came, all they got was bread and butter. Dinner came, and all they had was a watery Vegetable soup with a slice of bread.
Rotelle went to bed hungry, as did Jane. Their mother tried not to show it, but she was the same.
The next day served no better, a muffin for breakfast, Bread and butter for lunch, small plate of hash for dinner.
Now, let's go to that night we left off last chapter.
Jane awoke to the sound of her sister moaning for food in her sleep, she had to do something, she believed if they kept like this, they would starve by the end of the month.
She got up, slipped on her boots and coat, and walked out into the cold spring night.
Jane walked through the alleyway, her breath seeable from the cold. 'My, it is really cold tonight, even for the spring!'
As she walked into a bakery street, there were shops that had used to be running, but they shut down after the Germans invaded. She had been to some of the destroyed shops before, they had abandoned canns of food that were still edible.
Jane decided to go to an old rubbled shop, she used to love going there before the Germans invaded and forced a closure on the market, the shop had wonderful food.
As Jane got near it, she heard footsteps behind her. Jane realized she was in trouble, she tried to make a break for it when she heard a voice say. "Halt!"
She turned around to see a German soldier pointing a Luger pistol at her, and a rifle strapped around his back. "You shouldn't be out here." he said to her.
Jane gulped. "Give me your documents." the soldier demanded. "I-I don't have them, I-" "Then take me to your house so I can find them." the soldier barked.
Jane didn't want to let her family all die. "Wait! I-I have my documents right here." the soldier snatched them from her hand.
"You are Jane Loviet, and you are a Jew." he looked up. "You know the punishment." Tears began to fall from her eyes as she realized, the end was nigh.
"You there soldier, Stop!" someone called. both she and the soldier looked at the darkness to see a man in an officer's uniform walking up to them.
Jane got a closer look, it was Colonel Frederick Auburg. "Sir, this woman is a Jew." the soldier said.
Frederick nodded. "I realize that, I'll take care of it myself. Now please go Soldier." The soldier saluted and walked away.
Frederick grabbed Jane by the arm and led her to the alleyway. as soon as they turned the corner, Frederick whirled around on her. "What are you doing out here? It is Curfew! What even put you in your right mind to come out into the streets?" Frederick whisper-yelled
Jane looked up at him, she opened then closed her mouth. "He could've killed you Jane." Frederick whispered. "I am not always going to be there to save you."
The two realized that their faces were about an inch from each other. Frederick blushed, so did Jane.
Frederick leaned back a little. He cleared his throat. "Why are you out here breaking curfew?" he asked.
Jane remembered what her mother said two days before. "Do not get to comfortable with the Colonel, I do not trust him." but she had to trust him, he saved her for the second time now, she had to trust him.
"My-my family is in hiding as you probably well know, you know since Nazis hunt for Jews." Jane looked up at Frederick who nodded. "I understand, I already knew you don't trust us, but I understand, and I'm not angry. please continue."
Jane nodded again. "Well, after we heard about the War in Russia, supply got low, and now we are beginning to starve, so I snuck out of the house to find food for all of us."
Frederick put a hand to his forehead. "Of course, they had me remove a hundred men from to the east for the war against Russia." after a moment he said.
"I can help. Come with me." Reluctantly, Jane obliged
They walked all the way to the Nazi base and Jane froze. Frederick noticed and grabbed her small white hand. "I will not arrest you Jane, I am taking you here to get food for you to take home to your family."
Jane had tears in her eyes. "But, what if your trying to trick me? I don't want to die because of trust." it hurt Frederick to see her seem scared. He put his fingers to her cheek. "I'm not going to trick you, I could never do that. I would never of saved you twice if I didn't care, because I care about you Jane. Trust me, I want to help." Frederick whispered these words softly
He carresed her cheek. "You really mean that?" Jane whispered back. "All of it." Frederick answered. The two were inches apart once again, they could feel each other's breath.
Frederick stared at her, he never understood why Hitler ordered the slaughter of so many innocent Jews, but, what he saw confused him more. He couldn't believe that so many of his own people would have the guts to kill such a beautiful creature such as Jane here.
"Come with me, and I promise, you will come out alive." Frederick assured her. Jane nodded, she was completely melted into his gaze
Jane grabbed Frederick's hand, and together, they walked to his headquarters.
So what do ye think? do you think Frederick is going to trick Jane, or honor his word? They definitely seem very close. Oh well! I hope you like the story so far. Keep reading everyone!
