Chapter Five: The Headquarters of Frederick Auburg

The two walked in the concrete halls of the German base, Jane had a firm tight grip on Frederick's hand.

They turned a corner to see a large door, there it read: Hauptsitz von: Oberst Frederick Auburg. (That means Headquarters of: Colonel Frederick Auburg.)

Frederick unlocked it and clicked on the lights. as they walked into the room, Jane looked everywhere at it. The first thing she saw was a faded Swastika dangling on the wall. Frederick noticed her look at it.

"Don't pay attention to that." he pointed at the Swastika. "It's a formal decoration I am forced to keep up as a symbol of my loyalty to the Reich, otherwise, you probably wouldn't see that on there."

Jane nodded. "Oh."

Frederick plopped his hat onto the nearby sofa.

Her eyes diverted to a picture on the mantelpiece: it was a picture of Frederick Auburg, much younger looking, in a very nice suit, next to him was a fair woman in a white dress who seemed just about matching his age.

Jane picked up the picture. "Who is this Frederick?"

Frederick walked over and gently pulled the picture from her hands. "That is my wife, Alexandria."

Jane nodded. "She's pretty, I hope I can meet her someday." Frederick placed the picture back on the mantelpiece. "Unless you believe in heaven, you will probably never meet her. Because she's dead."

This caught Jane by surprise. "Oh. I-I'm so sorry." Frederick looked at her. "it's fine. It happened Seven years ago-" he choked, a lump formed in his throat.

Jane could see he was struggling, Frederick seemed to age once more. She realized what he meant when he mentioned Mental changes. Frederick was going mad from depression, lots of depression. All Jane wanted to do at that point was to comfort him and tell him it's alright.

"Well." Frederick masked his pain with a smile. "Why are we here again? Ah, yes! now, let's get you and your family something."

He walked into the kitchen.

After a few minutes of waiting, Frederick came out with six knapsacks strapped over his shoulder. He smiled warmly at her and handed out a handful of bars. "What are these?" Jane said as she took them.

"Oh." Frederick was still grinning. "The best chocolate in Germany, we take pride in it. As I was filling the knapsack's with food, I decided it wouldn't hurt to give you all some sort of desert, so I chose chocolate, I hope you don't mind."

"I haven't had chocolate in a long time!" Jane looked at him shyly, then down again. "Not since, you know, 1940 happened."

Frederick felt a twang of regret. She hasn't even been able to eat chocolate because of their occupation. What kind of people were his soldiers? What kind of Colonel was he?

Jane looked into Frederick's stormy grey eyes. "Thank you." she said. The nearest candle seemed to dim. "Thank you for everything."

Frederick finally decided to unlock his heart. He raised her chin to look up at her. "Jane." Frederick hesitated. "There is a very big secret I have wanted to tell you." he said barely above a whisper.

Jane looked into the eyes of her enemy, he didn't look like the enemy anymore. "What is it?"

"Ich Liebe dich." Frederick said

"What does that mean?" Jane muttered.

"It means, I love you in my language." Frederick whispered.

"Oh." Jane blushed. "Well, Ik haud van jou te." She said.

Frederick inched his face closer to her's. "What does that mean?"

Jane looked at him. "It means, I love you too in my language."

The two closed their eyes and their lips met. Frederick slid his right hand into her soft hair, while his other wrapped around her back.

Jane had her arms around his neck. Their lips parted. "Is this really happening?" Jane whispered. Frederick looked into her Chocolate brown eyes. "It is, and I don't regret it, Jew or not. I love you."

With those words, the two kissed again, this time more tenderly.

After pulling apart, the Frederick sat down with Jane on his lap. Frederick spoke up. "Do you want to go back right now, or just a few more minutes?" he said before capturing her lips again.

"I think we can wait a few minutes." Jane said into his mouth.

After breaking the kiss, Jane rested her head on his chest. And in a few minutes, she fell asleep in his arms.

Frederick looked up, then down at the beautiful creature that was snuggled before him. For years, he did everything a good man did, yet, he always felt like he was missing something, he joined the military to find out. Now he had found out what he was missing.

It wasn't power, it wasn't rank, it wasn't serving his country. No. It was the woman that was before him, resting on him for comfort.

Frederick pulled out his small diary with a pen and began to write. When he was done, he looked once again at Jane.

Frederick now noticed the bags around her eyes, her messy hair, her chapped lips, the scratches on her. The symbolism of suffering.

A feeling of anger and protection formed. His men, yes his men, fellow German's were hunting and killing people like this beautiful woman, the woman he loved.

He kissed her on the forehead, he soon laid his head down on hers. The two fell into a wonderful sleep.

The clock struck four, and Frederick woke up. "Jane." he shook her awake. "Hmmm?" She mumbled.

"It's four o'clock, my staff officers will be awake soon, and your family will be worried." He whispered. Jane was suddenly awake. "Your right. Mother will be worried sick! Let's go."

Jane gave Frederick a kiss and they walked off to town.

Jane led him to the alleyway. It was still cold, she shivered but tried not to show it. Frederick noticed it and stopped her. "What is it?" Jane asked turning around.

"You're cold." Frederick pointed out. Jane blushed. "It's fine, I'm used to it." Frederick pulled off his Grey trench coat and handed it to her. She looked at it, then up at him.

"No, no it's yours, I can't, I-" She tried to say, but Frederick covered her mouth with his two fingers. After he dropped his hand, he slid the coat on her, then he took off his gloves and slipped them onto her trembling fingers.

He kissed her right hand before slipping the glove on it.

"You don't deserve to suffer Jane." Frederick said as he remembered seeing the Knicks and scratches on her beautiful face last night. He didn't want the person he loved to suffer because of people like him.

"I can only feel completely warm only if I'm around you." Frederick said. "I don't need the coat, besides. I have loads extra."

Their eyes met. They kissed again, Jane was in bliss while Frederick felt like he would never feel so happy again.

They soon began to walk again. The two were very silent until Jane spoke up. "My mother will probably not like seeing you."

Frederick nodded sadly. "I already thought of that." Jane looked over at him, she saw him looking down at the ground, a look of sadness on his face.

"What's wrong?" She asked.

Frederick looked at her not smiling. "It's just, I was thinking about marriage." Jane looked at him. "You want to marry me?" she asked bewildered.

"Yes." Frederick said sadly. "But, I don't know how. I'm a Nazi, you're a Jew, this war is still running."

He stopped walking, so did Jane. "What I'm saying is." Frederick had tears in his eyes. "I can't marry you until this war ends. If my country wins, I will have to escape with you to a different one, like Switzerland because my people will still try to kill you and your people, if the otherside wins, I might be taken prisoner to another country like Britain."

Jane began to panic, Frederick was spot on. "What do we do?" she asked very scared.

Frederick put his arms around her, then he used a finger to tip her chin up so their eyes could meet.

"We will find a way love. But for now, we must wait patiently. Can you do that?" Frederick whispered.

Jane nodded. "Yes, yes I can." she whispered back.

Their faces inched closer, the two kissed hard. Frederick backed Jane to the wall and put his hands to it, cornering her, showing that she was his love life, that she belonged to him no matter what.

After they pulled apart, Frederick said. "I think, we really need to get to your families house." Jane nodded.
