Chapter Six: Meeting the family

Jane and Frederick continued walking in the alleyway until She stopped and turned on Frederick. "Do you promise not to give away me, my family and our protector to the Nazi government at any given time in your life?"

Frederick held up his hand. "I promise not to give away you, your family and your protector to the Nazi government at any given time in my life." he promised.

Jane thought for a moment. "Alright, I trust you. but don't betray us, okay?" Frederick smiled. "I thought I said I had enough of killing Jews for a lifetime. So I promise."

"Good." Jane whispered, then she quickly kissed him. The two continued walking. Frederick grabbed her hand and stroked her palm. Jane blushed at this sign of affection.

They stopped to see the back door of a old house. "Wait here at the doorway, and come in when I open it back up, ok?" Jane whispered. Frederick nodded.

Jane walked to the door and pushed it open. As soon as she closed the door, Frederick peeked through the window.

Jane was just walking into the room, when someone turned the corner. "Jane Ellen Loviett!" she said in a stern motherly voice. "Where were you? Rotelle woke up at three in the morning to see your bed empty. we've been worried sick!"

"I'm sorry mother." Jane said. "But I went out to find food for us."

Mrs. Loviett raised her eyebrow. "Then why were you gone so long?" Jane looked at the floor. "I got caught."

Her eyes widened. "Jane Loviett, why do you persist in these dangerous roads?" Mrs. Loviett stopped talking when a question formed. "How did you get away?"

Jane smiled. "As the soldier was preparing to shoot me, a man said stop! He was a German officer, and he said-" "-I will take care of it myself solder, now go." A voice from behind the door said.

Mrs. Loviett jumped. "Who was that?"

Jane smiled as she opened the door to reveal a smiling German officer. "Frederick, meet my mother, Mother, meet Colonel Frederick Auburg, he saved me a second time last night."

Mrs. Loviett was rooted to the spot as Frederick took off his officer cap. "Pleased to meet you Mrs. Loviett." he held out his hand in formal greeting.

It took a minute of blinking for Mrs. Loviett to realize that this man wanted to shake her hand. Reluctantly, she took it.

After they finished shaking hands, Mrs. Loviett scowled up at Frederick. "What are you doing here? Are you intending to kill all of us?" she snapped.

Frederick chuckled and shook his head. "My dear lady. If I intended to kill all of you, I would never of even gave thought to Save your Jane from one of my soldiers, furthermore..." He took off the knapsacks that were strapped around his shoulder.

Rotelle and Mrs. Dorenson (Who came into the room a minute ago watching the whole thing silently.) watched with Mrs. Loviett and Jane, as Frederick rummaged through the knapsacks.

He pulled out some raw Sausage, Bread, small cubes of beef, a jar of butter, a vial of oil, and white bandages from one of the knapsacks. "I know it's not much." Frederick said. "But there are similar things in the other five knapsacks. Oh, and I brought some of my favorite chocolate to you, you know, for some kind of dessert."

They all stared at him and the food. "Why are you doing this?" Mrs. Dorenson asked.

Frederick shrugged. "I never really agreed fully to Hitler's ideas, I mostly joined the Army because, I was trying to find out something I was looking for." His eyes darted to Jane then back to the rest of them.

"But, anyway, last night after I saved Jane, I asked her what she was doing in curfew. And she said, that you were out of food. So, I decided to take us to my headquarters and help in some way I could."

Mrs. Loviett nodded. "I understand, but, why were you gone so long Jane?" Jane tried to hide her embarrassment as she remembered falling asleep in Frederick's arms.

Luckily Frederick saved her. "She needed to rest a little, so I let her sleep on my couch for about a half hour while I made preparations, then, we went off. There were delays, and what not on the way, plus, Jane had to give me directions, so, that's it." All of that was true, accept, Frederick left out the romantic moment the two shared.

Thankfully, Mrs. Loviett seemed to buy it. she nodded slowly. "Alright, thank you sir."

Mrs. Dorenson looked the Colonel up and down. "Well, you don't need to bring anything more now. We are very capable of taking care of ourselves, thank you very much."

Frederick felt hurt at this cold comment, and Jane seemed to notice it. "Mrs. Dorenson, that's going too far! He's trying to help us." Jane exclaimed.

Mrs. Dorenson brushed off Jane's accusation. "It very well seems that the German army has enough food to last, unlike us."

She went too far, Frederick went rigid, he stared down at Mrs. Dorenson with rising anger. "I am not responsible for how my men get supplied or how much the citizenry get, all I know is that it all comes from Berlin!"

"How dare you raise your voice in my house Nazi!" Mrs. Dorenson yelled.

"How dare you insult me, when all I am trying to do is help you!" Frederick shouted.

There began more arguing. Jane stepped between the two while Mrs. Loviett covered her eyes and Rotelle watched in shock.

Finally, the fight stopped with Jane slapping him in the face as Frederick accidentally insulted Mrs. Dorenson. "Frederick, You shouldn't of come, never say that to our protector. Especially Nazis! I'm ashamed." Jane snapped until she immediately regretted it. She looked up to see a lifeless, cold and broken looks come from Frederick. Jane had called him a Nazi, that was just as bad as a Nazi calling her a Jew.

"Wow." Frederick said after he felt the slap from the person he loved, and hearing her call him Nazi he was something vile. "I never knew, that the people I try to help, don't want anything to do with me." His face showed more than hurt, it showed Generations of long suffering, since the day his wife died.

Jane was trying to find a way to comfort Frederick after slapping him, Mrs. Dorenson also looked regretful. "Frederick." Jane said, trying to come up with an apology.

Frederick looked like an old man about to shrivel and die, his eyes were hollow, his face was in a tight frown. "I should've known better than to even try to befriend Jews." His voice was cracking, there was a dullness in the air.

Mrs. Dorenson lowered her head in shame, what was she thinking? She couldn't afford to feed all of them. 'Why didn't I just keep my mouth shut?' she thought to herself.

"No, but-" Jane tried to say.

"They want nothing to do with me, because I'm a murderer." Frederick said. He suddenly marched off down the alleyway.

Mrs. Dorenson looked down at the food the Colonel left them. She felt she didn't deserve any of it. Mrs. Dorenson, Mrs. Loviett and Rotelle walked downstairs with their heads hung low.

Jane stood there, looking out the opened door. She felt a bad feeling in the air, a dangerous feeling. Jane looked at Frederick's trench coat on the floor, she then saw a book, it was a diary.

She opened it to the two earliest entrys, the first was a five day old entry: I watched the Jews line up for their inevitable death, They begged me for mercy, but I could do nothing. I turned around and leaned against the Wall and heard the gunshots, the screaming. It was too much to bear, I have made my decision diary. I cannot live in this world anymore unless I have something to help me, but I have no one left. My wife is dead, I have killed innocent people. I don't deserve to live. I hope that Germany will find a better commander in place of me if I die, Diary. Frederick Auburg. March 12 1945

Jane read the second entry that was made just last night: March 14 1945. Hello diary. Just two days ago, I saved a Jewish woman of twenty-six years old, her name is Jane Loviett. When I looked at her, I felt a warm and fuzzy feeling, I hadn't felt like that since I met my beloved Alexandria. As you know diary, I have been searching for that thing I've been missing, and I think it's her. I had a conversation about this Jew with a fellow Jewish sympathizer, Capitan Königsmar just about five hours ago. He said something about forbidden love, like on the stories. I walked into the streets only to find her caught again. Now I have the person I love with me. I intend to help her family with their food problem tomorrow diary. I love this woman diary, if I hadn't found her that day, I would be being carried to my grave in a coffin by now. I just hope she really loves me back, otherwise I've made my decision.

Jane's fingers felt numb, Frederick's diary fell to the floor. "Frederick." Jane whispered. She had to save him. Jane ran into the alleyway in search for him.

Crazy twist eh? Will Jane save Frederick in time, or is it too late? Keep reading to find out everyone!
