Chapter Seven: Love saves all
Jane ran frantically, searching all over the alleyways. She heard voices and hid.
There were two soldiers walking down the alleyway. "You know Horatio, I think it odd that he's looking so old all the sudden."
The soldier called Horatio nodded. "Yes, I agree Peter. Ol' Fred was looking fine these past couple days, but now, he looks worse than before."
They said Fred, could that mean Frederick? Jane thought she should ask them for help, but no she was a Jew, they might kill her. But she needed help.
"Excuse me soldiers." Jane said in a small voice as she walked from the shadows. The two soldiers jumped.
"Who are you?" The one called Peter asked, narrowing his eyes. "Are you a Jew?"
Jane nodded. "Are you friends with Frederick Auburg?" Jane asked.
They looked at each other. "Yes." they said in unison. "But that doesn't go with the matter we have now Jew." Horatio said as he slipped the rifle off his shoulder.
"Wait!" Jane cried. "I'm a friend of Frederick's!"
The two chuckled. "Well miss smarty-pants, if you're friends with Frederick, we'll give you three chances to explain something you know about him. then, we'll let you live."
'Oh no!' Jane thought. 'He never told me that many secrets yet!'
"What is something Frederick likes?" Horatio asked. Jane thought hard. She gulped. "Chess." she said. 'Yes, every boy likes chess.' "Strike one." Peter said. "He hates chess, thinks it's too popular for him."
Jane thought again. "He likes his headquarters?" She asked stupidly. 'Why did I say that!? He hates his military career.' "Strike two." Peter said. "He hates anything that relates to his military career."
'Oh please God!' Jane prayed silently. Then she remembered something. "August Storck's famous German chocolate!" She blurted out.
Peter and Horatio looked at each other. Horatio lowered his rifle. "Well, you convinced us." Peter said. "What is it you want?"
Jane took a deep breath. "Do you know where Frederick is?"
"He went down the alleyway near the City dump, why?" Horatio questioned.
"I think Frederick is going to kill himself." Both Horatio and Peter jumped as they heard this. "That explains why he looked the way he looked." Peter said.
"Aye." Horatio said. "He didn't even stop to say hi like he usually did!"
Together, Horatio and Peter followed Jane to the city dump. when they reached it, there were two forked crossroads. "That left one leads to the main streets, while the right leads deeper into the alleyway!" Horatio said.
"Me and Horatio will go to the streets, while you search the alleyway." Peter said to Jane. She nodded.
Jane looked frantically through the alleyways. She looked everywhere. She cried silent sobs at the thought of seeing Frederick lying dead in a pool of blood.
Jane turned a corner where she heard a shuffling noise.
She walked to the sound and looked around the corner. Frederick was standing there. His face was pale, there seemed to be no life in it, his eyes were dark.
Frederick pulled a Luger pistol from his pocket and brought it to his forehead. "Frederick!" Jane cried and ran towards him. Frederick dropped the Luger in surprise.
"No Frederick! don't do it. I didn't mean it, please!" Jane screamed.
"Go away Jane." Frederick's voice was hollow and lifeless. He picked up the Luger again.
"No, I won't leave you!" Jane said. She grabbed him and sobbed into his Grey coat. "Kill me first if you decide to do it!" Jane pled.
"I've made up my mind." Frederick said. "I'm a murderer who should die for his crimes."
"No!" Jane sobbed harder. "You were ordered to kill. You are not evil Frederick! You were doing what you were told. I didn't mean to hurt you back there, I didn't realize how much you were suffering!" She hugged him.
"I love you Frederick. If you want to die, let me die with you!" Jane sobbed.
Frederick's finger was on the trigger, he pointed it at his head. However, his trigger hand was shaking. Frederick hesitated.
"Please Frederick. I can't live without you." Jane kissed him hard. She put her hand over the Luger. "I don't want you to die." She said as their lips parted lightly.
Frederick loosened his grip on the Luger, and a second later, it clattered to the floor.
Frederick had tears in his eyes. "I love you too Jane."
The two slid to the floor. Jane kicked the Luger from Frederick's reach just to make sure he didn't try to kill himself again.
She sobbed into his chest, sobbs of mixed emotions, one of them was joy.
Frederick stroked her hair.
Jane was still scared. "Don't ever try to do that again." She sobbed as she grabbed onto his shirt as if her life depended on it. "You scared me." Jane whispered.
"I'm sorry." Frederick said.
"I thought I wouldn't have a chance to apologize, to-to tell you that I still love you." She hiccuped a little.
Frederick leaned Jane's head back up to look at him. "Well, I still love you." he whispered.
Jane gave him a wet loving smile.
They kissed. Frederick held her tightly, he never meant to scare her like that. Ending his own life did seem rather silly to him at that moment. Their lips roved in unison as they deepened the kiss.
They sat there in total bliss, forgetting everything around them, they forgot where they were, they forgot the war, they forgot the existence of the whole world. The only thing they had on their minds were each other, knowing that the other would always be there, from the beginning to the end.
Frederick pulled away. "I have gotten a retirement draft from the office in Berlin. I can leave the army in five months."
Jane smiled at him. "What are you thinking Colonel?"
Frederick chuckled. "I was thinking about an Elope to Switzerland, there, the Nazis won't bang open the church doors to interrupt our marriage."
"I think it sounds like a lovely plan." Jane said. "As long as you never leave me."
Frederick smiled. "Never." He whispered.
They held each other for the next hour, talking, but mostly kissing.
All was well.
