Jacob

I drop on my desk chair, exhausted after today's events. The rainy weather isn't helping with my headache either. Tanya instantly looks up from her computer and arcs a brow at me.

"I take it didn't go as well as you'd hoped?"

I shake my head, leaning back on my chair. "Nope. Neither Edward nor Bella could identify anything out of the ordinary, just some of their belongings."

"Isabella? I thought you were only taking Mr. Cullen to the cottage."

"That was the idea, but when Mr. Cullen pulled up, she was in the car with him."

Tanya tilts her head to the side. "It's odd, isn't it? Why would they be together?"

"If you think that's odd, wait until you hear the rest."

I tell her everything that went down at the cottage, down to the point where they both stood at the foot of the shallow grave where Rosalie was left at first, hand in hand. There's been an obvious change in their dynamic, in the way they act around each other, moving almost in sync with one another. It screams more than just friends. It screams that there is more to them than anyone was anticipating.

Tanya doesn't seem too shocked by what I saw today. She leans back on her chair and says, "Well, what I'm about to tell you might not help with your shit mood."

"Now what?" I rub a hand down my face.

"Agent Uley is in the office with the Captain right now."

"FBI?"

"The one and only."

"For fuck sake."

He's here sooner than I expected.

I stand from my desk immediately and walk to my father's office. Paul gives me a subtle nod as I walk by his desk. My father and Detective Uley are deep in conversation when I walk in, but the moment my father sees me, he stands and welcomes me.

"Jacob, so glad you're back. Agent Uley, this is my son, Detective Jacob Black. Jacob, this is Agent Sam Uley from the FBI."

Agent Uley stands from his chair and offers me his hand. He has a firm grip. We're about the same height and if it weren't cliche enough, he too is wearing a leather jacket. Only his is brown instead of black like mine.

"Pleasure to meet you," I say.

"Likewise. I was just speaking to the Captain about the case."

"I'm just getting him up to speed," Dad said.

"Well, if you want, I can take you up to the drawing board and you can see more in depth yourself. I just came back from the cabin with Edward Cullen and Isabella Swan. My hope was that they could find something in the cabin itself that we might have missed, but as is it, I came back empty handed."

"Nothing yet that points to a potential third person?"

"It's not potential," I said. "Someone shot Emmett. He couldn't have shot himself."

"But is Emmett Swan completely cleared because he is also wounded? What if he was the one who shot the gun first?" Uley asked.

"Oh, trust me, that's definitely one of the possibilities we're going with, but we still need to find that third person. That person is key as to what happened that night. Whether or not they killed Rosalie, they definitely shot Emmett and brought her back to the cabin. The question is why," I said.

Before Uley could say anything else, my phone rang.

"Excuse me." I take out my phone and answer it. "What happened, Felix?"

"I need you to come down to my office, there is something I have to show you."

"You can't tell me right now?" I ask, irritated.

"No, you need to see this."

"Fine. I'll be right there." I hang up the phone. I look at Uley and my father who are looking at me expectedly. "I have to go, Felix has something to show me. Agent Uley, Detective Denali will show you everything we've gathered in the briefing room."

"Is it something good?" Dad asked.

"Let's hope so."

"What do we have?" I ask as soon as I walk into Felix's office.

From the moment I arrived, Felix looked as if he was going to explode, visibly vibrating in his seat as he scarfed down some fries. He rolls over to his desk as soon as he sees me, drumming his hands on the table.

"I was going through some of the witness statements, plus interrogations you did, trying to see if there was anything we were missing, and so far everything has been checked out."

"Okay." Where the hell is he going with this?

"So, I went over it again and I found something that three specific interviews have in common. Isabella Swan, Jessica Stanley -Emmett's first assistant- and Claire Collins -Emmett's latest assistant-, and you want to know what that is?" He pulls up on his screen the street view of a small cafe shop. I clean in closer, looking at the name. Poppy's Cafe. "This is the place that Isabella Swan said she and Emmett frequented together for lunch. This is the place Jessica Stanley said she saw Emmett approach Rosalie for the first time, and where Claire Collins got his lunch from. This is his spot. So, I went ahead and got surveillance footage from the night of the accident, and look at what I got."

He presses the Enter key and the video starts playing on the screen. The time marks 6:03 PM on April 5th, 2023. There's a flow of cars coming in and out of the parking lot, people walking inside and outside of the establishment, none of which are recognizable until I see them. A gray Jeep Wrangler and a red BMW pulling into the parking lot, parking side by side. Felix laughs when I lean closer to the computer screen.

Emmett fucking Swan gets out of the Jeep and approaches the BMW, opening the driver's door. There, Rosalie Hale steps out, wearing the same exact flower dress and cardigan we found her in. Holy shit, holy shit. This is the last footage we have of her alive. She tilts her head up, kissing Emmett, who doesn't let go of her door. They start taking her luggage and purse out of the BMW and loading it to the Jeep.

Perhaps they were planning on leaving the BMW at the cabin and leaving together in the Jeep.

After they're done loading the Jeep with her belongings, they go into the cafe and get something to eat. Felix fast forwards the tape almost two hours before he stops it when a man walks into the cafe. The man, who I don't instantly recognize, approaches Emmett and Rosalie as they are finishing their dinner. Rosalie hugs this man and Emmett shakes his hand before they have a brief exchange of words and Emmett pays the bill. The three of them walk out of the establishment. Rosalie kisses Emmett one last time before getting in the passenger side of the BMW and the man gets in the driver side. Emmett gets in his Jeep and both cars pull out of the parking lot together, heading in the same direction.

This man was driving the BMW, so he caused the accident. And he had Rosalie with him.

I stood there, completely stunned.

"Felix, are you telling me what I think you're telling me?"

Felix smiles. "I got the third person, Jacob. I ran the images using facial recognition software, and I got a match. We have him."

Another click and the picture of a man pops on the screen. He's blonde, in his late thirties and has stark green eyes. I look down at the name.

Garrett Hale.

"Rosalie's half brother?"

"The one and only."

"He met with them the night of the accident and left in the BMW."

"According to this sample, he was."

"Felix, I could fucking kiss you right now! Send me this picture right now, I have to go see Jasper Hale."

"You're welcome!" He yells after me as I run out of the lab.

We got it. We fucking got it.

I call Tanya as I start my car, heading straight to Jasper Hale's house.

"Jacob, what's going on?" She answers at the second tone.

"We have him, Tanya. We fucking have him!"

"What do you mean? Who?"

"Garrett Hale! Felix pulled up footage of Poppy's Cafe from the night of the accident. The place Emmett always frequented and we have footage of him with Rosalie, and another man who met them there. And we got it! It's Garrett Hale."

"Garrett Hale? The half brother?"

"Garrett Fucking Hale!"

"Holy shit!"

"Inform Agent Uley, tell him I'm on my way to speak to Jasper Hale at this moment. Have Felix send you the picture of the waitress that helped them that night and head over to Poppy's Cafe and talk to her, see what you can get out of her. I'm going to try to get as much information on Hale as I can."

"On it." And she hangs up.

If indeed Garrett Hale is the third person I'm looking for, I need to find a possible motive. According to what Jasper had told us, Garrett was their father's son from his first marriage. They had a distant relationship but there has to be more, more he didn't tell us.

When I park outside his house, I find his wife, Alice, out in the front yard with her son and her niece. She stops what she's doing when she sees me and steps away from the children when I step on her porch.

"Detective, I wasn't expecting to see you."

"Sorry to show up unannounced, but I need to speak to your husband, is he home?"

She nods. "Yes, he's inside. Is everything okay?"

"I think it's best if I speak with him." I look at her niece, who is playing Jenga with her older cousin. "Play date today?"

Alice sighs, rubbing her brow. "Disguised play date. I thought my brother could use some time to himself after what happened."

I frown, leaning my weight from leg to another.

"What happened?"

"He hasn't told you?"

"I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to."

Alice groans, running her hands through her hair. "Of course he didn't. He's an idiot." She folds her arms over her chest and nods to the other end of the porch. I follow her until we're out of the children's earshot. "Edward asked to have a paternity test for Lucy. Turns out Lucy isn't his, but the other man's."

"What?"

Alice nods. "Yes, and my brother was pretty upset about it. My parents took her Friday night and I picked her up today so she could spend the day with me."

"Do you think you could call your father and have him email the test results to me?"

"Yes, of course. Let me get Jasper, I'm sure you have more questions to ask him."

"Thank you, Mrs. Hale."

Alice steps inside, leaving the children outside with me. I watch them play, laughing and squealing whenever the towel would tilt. The little girl who is so unaware of what's happening around her, her innocence making her almost immune to the secrets that surround her. She's light a ray of sunlight, so happy and pure.

Jasper steps out with his wife.

"Detective."

"Mr. Hale, thank you for seeing me."

"How can I help you?"

"I was wondering if you could answer some questions regarding your brother, Garrett Hale?"

Jasper frowns. "Garrett? What does he have to do with my sister's case?"

"First thing first, when was the last time you saw Garrett?"

Jasper sighs as he leans against the wall behind him. "I'd say about ten years ago. We didn't have the closest relationship, we barely knew each other."

"He is your half brother, right?"

"Yes, from my father's first marriage, but like I told you, that marriage ended pretty bad and Garrett stayed with his mother. My father barely got to see him, but we heard from family friends that he was a piece of work. Always getting into trouble, selling drugs, things like that. My mother didn't want us to have anything to do with him and after some time neither did my dad."

"I was afraid of that. So neither you or Rosalie ever tried to have a relationship with him?"

"No, never. He wasn't interested either. I mean, my sister had developed a soft side for him given the circumstances of his parents, but Garrett didn't give two shits so eventually she gave up trying. Like I said, the last time I heard from him was ten years ago and I think he said he lived in Arizona at the time."

Which is his last known address.

"Do you know his mother's name?"

Jasper shakes his head. "I never asked. She died a long time ago."

Dammit.

"Well, the reason why I'm asking is because as of now, Garrett is a person of interest in your sister's case. "

"Was Garrett there?" Alice asked, shocked. "He was there the night of the accident, wasn't he? Or at least involved in some way?"

"As of right now, we have reason to believe he was involved." I turn to Jasper. "If you remember anything that might be of help to us, please don't hesitate contacting me, it's of utmost importance that we find Garrett."

Jasper nods. "Y-yes, of course. Thank you, Detective."

The precinct is nearly empty when I come back. I could have gone home, but my head can't stop spinning with details of the case. I need to know where Garrett fits in all this, why would he want to hurt his sister? Was he even the one to hurt her? What does he know about all this?

I spent some time looking at our board covered with pictures and evidence from the crime scene, pictures of the victims and our suspects. Emmett, Rosalie, Edward, Isabella and now Garrett, all lined up side by side. How does this all tie together?

"Do you ever go home?" Tanya walks in the briefing room and leans against the door frame. "It's nearly ten, go home."

"I can't, not until I know where Garrett fits in all this."

"You're not going to find out tonight. Uley is doing a press conference tomorrow. Someone has to have a tip or seen him somewhere, but we won't know until tomorrow."

"I don't like that," I said. It was Agent Uley's idea to go public and let the people know about Garrett. "If we do the conference, Garrett will know we're after him and if he's guilty, he'll try to run."

"Then it's a good thing you're after him to catch him before he has a chance."

I want to roll my eyes but I can't. Tanya and I have been partners ever since we made detectives, she's the one person I trust in the world and she's right almost the whole time. Like the time she said my attraction to Isabella Swan would get in the way in the investigation and it had. I've been almost tempted to step away because this damn woman haunts my dreams. She's like a virus and I'm afraid this virus has caught onto Edward Cullen.

Tanya snaps me out of my train of thought.

"You're a good detective, Jacob, there's a reason why Uley still wants you in this case." She walks to me and tugs on my jacket, pulling me up from my chair. "Now go home and take a shower, probably drink a beer and get some sleep. We have a big day tomorrow."

And a big day it will be.
