Breakfast is cold,

As cold as our bed

I'm watching you trip down the words that you said,

I'm watching you devour, mistake me for bread

Well boy, is you fed? Or are you mislead?

I gave you the messiest head

You give me the messiest head

Oh you're turning red

'Cause I'm trying to give the impression that I get the message you wish I was dead

See you bout to break a sweat

I,I,I

I won't let us finish yet

I,I,I

Please don't take this as a threat

I,I,I

All I'm saying is if you don't love me no more then lie...

Ding!

I looked away from the board to my phone, but it wasn't my phone that went off. Looking at Tanya, she shakes her head. It wasn't her phone either. That only leaves one of two options. Looking down at the phone on the table, Emmett and Rosalie's phones, and there it was. Emmett's phone lit up with a reminder. I quickly motion Tanya to hand me a pair of gloves and open the notification.

Appointment with Dr. Wyatt at 2:30 pm.

Tanya looks over my shoulder.

"Dr. Wyatt? Isn't that Isabella Swan's psychiatrist?"

Detective Uley walks in the briefing room. "What's going on?"

"Emmett Swan's phone just got a reminder for an appointment with Dr. Wyatt at 2:30 today," I said, placing the phone on the table.

"Could be a reminder for his wife," Tanya said.

"Why would he need a reminder for his wife's appointment?" I ask.

"Fill me in," Detective Uley says, not at all catching what we're saying.

"Dr. Raymond Wyatt, he is Mrs. Swan therapist and he's been treating her for a few years," Tanya said.

"What for?"

"Uh, from what I gathered when I spoke with him she has some sort of anxiety disorder. He wasn't willing to elaborate and got quite pissy when I tried to push for more information."

Uley looks at me. "Do you think if you go you can get some information out of him?"

I shrug. "Yes, I can try. What do you have?"

"A woman in Oregon who works at a local market has identified Garrett. Apparently he has lived there for the last seven years with a woman named Katherine Ozark and they have a three year old child. I have people down there looking for her and we'll bring her in for interrogation as soon as we find her."

Hmm, now that's a good lead and depending on what we can get out of Dr. Wyatt, that will determine who our suspect is. Right now it's a balance between Emmett and Garrett. Which one shot the gun? Who shot it first? How did it come to be?

"Well, in the meantime, I think Tanya and I have an appointment to make."

We arrived just in time for the appointment and Dr. Wyatt was a bit shocked when we walked in. Clearly, he wasn't expecting anyone to show up. Dr. Wyatt is a man close to his sixties, his black hair and beard had a hint of salt and pepper, with thick glasses framing his blue eyes. He wore a white collar shirt, a sweater vest and dress pants.

We found out about him and his involvement with Isabela at the beginning of the investigation. Tanya was the one who came down to see him to ask a few questions, but like she said, he wasn't open to giving answers.

"Dr. Wyatt, I'm detective Jacob Black and I believe you may remember my colleague, Detective Tanya Denali."

Dr. Wyatt didn't look too happy to see us. He shut his notebook almost aggressively and stood up to greet us.

"Ah yes, the hostile detective. I remember you."

He shook her hand first and then mine.

"She tends to have that effect on people," I tease, trying to lighten his mood.

Tanya rolls her eyes.

"What can I help you with? Like I told you colleague before, there isn't much I can disclose due to doctor-patient confidentiality."

"We're not here to talk about Isabella Swan," Tanya said. "We have in our possession Emmett Swan's phone and we got notified that he has an appointment with you today at this exact hour."

Dr. Wyatt sighed, shaking his head slightly. "Like I said, there isn't much I can tell you."

"Dr. Wyatt, you do understand Emmett is under investigation for his involvement in the murder of his mistress Rosalie Hale-Cullen."

"Yes, yes, I'm well aware of that," he said, waving me off as he walked back to his chair. "His little stunt is all over the news."

"Dr. Wyatt, any information can help us get a better idea of what we're up against," Tanya said. "I know you don't want to disclose information on Isabella Swan, but is there any reason why Emmett Swan is also a patient of yours?"

Dr. Wyatt sighs, resigned and motions to us to take a seat across from him. We do. He leans forward, pressing his elbows on his knees and says, "I've been treating Emmett for about six years now. He was the one who came to me after an incident that happened with Bella."

"What incident?" I ask for clarification.

"Bella found out he slept with another woman when she was about five months pregnant with Noah. According to Emmett, they fought and things got out of hand. He lost control... and he hurt her."

I sit forward. "I'm sorry, did you say he hurt her?"

"Why isn't there a police report?" Tanya demanded.

"Because he begged me not to do one. I was ready to report him to the police when he came to me, but Emmett insisted it was in the heat of the moment. He was scared of how things got out of hand so quickly. He begged me to help him, the boy only needed someone to talk to... So I agreed with the condition that I see Bella at least once a week to verify that he wasn't harming her. He met Rosalie two months after the incident."

"You knew about the affair."

"I did. One thing you have to understand, Rosalie was like a breath of fresh air for you Emmett. A distraction from what he did to Isabella, from his responsibilities, everything. I don't have a shadow of a doubt that Emmett loved both Isabella and Rosalie, but I never believed him to actually leave Bella for her."

"And why not?" I asked.

"He told me. His intentions were always to leave Rosalie, but she made it impossible after she became pregnant with Lucia. This affair became a hole he couldn't dig himself out of." Dr. Wyatt shakes his head slightly. "I hate keeping this from Isabella. Everything. She is a good woman with a good heart."

"But she knew Emmett was sleeping around behind her back? At least before Rosalie," Tanya said, writing it down in her notebook.

"No, she doesn't."

"But you just said-"

"She doesn't remember."

"She doesn't remember?" I ask. "Care to explain?"

"She doesn't remember the fight and she doesn't remember what Emmett did," he said, sternly.

"How is that possible?" Tanya snapped. "How could she not remember her own husband hurting her? And how exactly did he hurt her?"

Dr. Wyatt glared at us, almost refusing to go on but then he shakes his head again and says, "He said she was very upset and she was trying to leave, and he tried to stop her. According to him, she wouldn't listen, wouldn't stop screaming at him and things got out of control. When he tried to get her to stop from walking out the door, he ended up pushing her against the wall."

"He pushed her against the wall?" Tanya snapped again.

"Yes. Isabella's mind tends to block out bits and pieces of her past, traumas like a fight that ends up with her husband's hands around her neck. It's her mind's way of protecting itself."

Tanya gives me a look and I know immediately where her mind is going.

"Do you also mean traumas like killing someone?"

Dr. Wyatt laughs, taking us by surprise at his outburst. "Isabella Swan killing someone? Please, give me a break."

"What's so funny about it?"

"The fucking irony. Her father shot himself in the head while she was still in the room. That poor girl cannot look at a gun without going into a panic attack. I know this, I've seen it myself." He stands up and puts his hands in his pockets. "Isabella has nothing to do with this. I can't vouch for Emmert given the circumstances that lead me to treat him. Could he be a victim as well? Yes, he could be. But could he also be the person who pulled the trigger on his mistress? Well, he could be. If there's one thing Emmett didn't want, he didn't want Bella to find out about his affair. Emmett's greatest fear was losing Isabella and I don't know where that changed down the line."

The conversation with Dr. Wyatt didn't answer as many questions as we'd hoped, but it raised some concerns regarding Bella's safety in Emmett's home. If she couldn't remember that one instance where he harmed her, what's not to say there's more she can't remember? Could she be Emmett's victim as well and not know it? Could Emmett really take advantage of his wife's vulnerability and twist it to his benefit?

I could tell this also bothered Tanya. Her marriage with Marcus ended the night he laid a hand on her. I wanted to kill the man when I found out, but Tanya isn't the kind of woman who needs a man to defend her honor. She can do it herself. I grew to admire her more after witnessing her determination to not become Marcus' victim.

Two days after we met with Dr. Wyatt, Sam Uley came to the precinct escorting Garrett's girlfriend, Katherine Ozark. She went by Kate. She was a pretty woman, long blonde hair, blue eyes, slim features. He sat her in the interrogation room and called me in with him. Tanya watched from the other room with my father. According to several witnesses, Kate wasn't hiding. It never seemed as if she had anything to hide the moment Uley showed up at her doorstep.

"Ms. Ozark, like I said, you're not in any trouble. We just need to know if you've had any contact with your boyfriend Garrett," Uley told her.

She shook her head, her expression remained neutral. "I haven't."

"When was the last time you had contact with him?" I ask.

She keeps her eyes on the table. "Since the night of the accident. He said he was going to collect the money and come back."

"What money?" Uley asked.

She took in a deep breath, her expression went from neutral to visibly irritated.

"Rosalie's lover offered him half a million dollars to delete the pictures permanently. They were going to go to the cabin and he was going to give them the pictures in exchange for the money and the BMW."

"What kind of pictures?" I asked.

"Pictures of them together, out and about without a care in the world. Garrett saw them one morning in Portland where we live. He knew the man she was with was not her husband so he took some pictures of them together and blackmailed them. Garrett had just lost his job and I was pregnant, so the lover agreed to pay us a grand every month and in exchange Garrett wouldn't leak the pictures to their spouses."

"So you lived off this blackmail?"

She glared at me. "It fed my daughter and it paid the bills, I couldn't care less. But then out of nowhere this man wants all the pictures and promises Garrett that he will give him half a million dollars for him to turn them in. And half a million is a big deal, but Garrett is also smart. He knew there may be a chance he was going to get screwed over, so he made a copy of the hard drive and gave it to me for safe keeping."

"And where is this hard drive?" Uley asked.

"Hidden under the floorboards in my kitchen. Garrett left that afternoon and promised he'd be back the following morning... and I haven't heard from him since. I thought he took off with the money until I began seeing everything unravel on the news. I still believe he took off with the money, but I don't believe him to be a killer."

Uley nods to himself. "Thank you, Ms. Ozark. In a minute someone will come here and escort you back to your daughter and you'll be free to go. But please, if you hear from Garrett, let us know. It's of utmost importance that we find him."

Kate nods, the neutral shield falling over her features again. I follow Uley back in the conference room where Tanya is waiting for us.

"Tanya, I want you to get us a warrant to search Ms. Ozark's house. We need those photographs and anything that might give us an insight as to where Garrett might have gone."

"On it. What do you guys think? Do you think she's telling the truth?"

Uley sighs, dropping on one of the chairs and says, "Well, her story has some logic to it. Brother finds out sister is having an affair with a wealthy man, he doesn't have money so he blackmails her with the evidence."

"Emmett Swan may be a wealthy man, but he isn't paying half a million dollars. He's a goddamn literary agent. We have all of his bank information and Rosalie's, and neither of them had or withdrew half a million dollars," I said.

"So it was a set up to get Garrett to turn in the pictures," Tanya murmurs. "It could also explain the gun. Rosalie must have taken it out of Edward's safe if things went south with the exchange to try and intimidate him."

Uley leans forward. "Makes sense, but that means somewhere along the way Garrett found out this was a set up. They never made it to the cabin, but he must have known where it was."

"That means the cabin wasn't only their hiding spot, but their meeting spot so Emmett could give Garrett the money. No public witnesses, no cameras, nothing. That's how he knew where the cabin was." I turn to the board, looking at the security camera picture that shows Garrett and Rosalie getting in the BMW. "So Garrett and Rosalie get in the BMW together and they follow Emmett on the road to the cabin. Somehow along the way, Garrett finds out this is a set up and they don't have the money-"

"And rams into Emmett's Jeep," Uley said. "Jeep runs off the road and Rosalie must have gone after Emmett."

"The question is, what happened at the crash site? Garrett had to be the one who beat Emmett into a coma and shot him, but could he really have shot Rosalie as well?"

"If he was mad enough, maybe he was," Tanya said. "It was his only income to support his girlfriend and child. It seems he was right when he made a copy of the photos."

"Indeed," Uley agrees.

I shake my head slightly, my eyes glaring at the board with all our evidence. Dr. Wyatt's words from days earlier echo in the back of my mind.

"If there's one thing Emmett didn't want, he didn't want Bella to find out about his affair."

Something about this isn't right.

"This is a very flawed plan," I said, low enough to be a whisper.

Uley and Tanya turn to me.

"What's that?" He asked.

I walk to the board, my eyes glued on Emmett's picture. "Emmett didn't want Bella to find out about his affair. Which is why he wanted the pictures, but even Emmett must have known that someone like Garrett would have a backup? They intimidate him, he gives up the pictures, but how could he be so sure he didn't have extras? That right there is one way she could have easily found out about his affair."

I turn to Uley and Tanya who have their full attention on me. "And then leaving just like that? He had to have known that after Bella realized he wasn't coming back she'd call the police. Fuck, how long did it take us to find out there was an affair here? Not even two fucking hours! Boom! Another way she could've found out."

Uley shakes his head slightly. "Maybe he knew by the time that happened he would be halfway across the world. He wouldn't have to deal with the consequences."

"No, no, you're not listening." I sat down. "He had an appointment with Dr. Wyatt two days ago. Why would he make an appointment if he knew he wasn't going to show up? And nearly three months after his planned escape with Rosalie?"

"To tip us off?" Tanya suggested.

"No, not to tip us off."

I looked at them as the sudden possibility came at me like a punch in the gut. Listening to Dr. Wyatt and now Kate Ozark has made me realize something that has never crossed my mind.

"This affair became a hole he couldn't dig himself out of."

Maybe we've had it wrong the whole time.

"I don't think Emmett was trying to abandon Bella. I think he was trying to abandon Rosalie instead."
