Dean would rather be anywhere else right now than at his parents' party being forced to make nicities and polite conversations with everyone attending. Though he was happy in some aspects, since the party was in honor of his younger brother, Sam. The only thing Dean could think about was the heir to the Novak family, his lifelong friend and secret love, Castiel.
The ballroom was crowded with all the richest families in the country, and though most of them were rather attractive regardless of gender, Dean only had his eyes on Castiel, who was currently on the other side of the room trapped in a conversation with Crowley MacLeod.
Dean only knew Crowley from parties and other social events, enough to know his family not-so-secretly hated Dean's family. Dean felt an unmistakable sense of hatred towards Crowley, and he also felt the telltale feeling of jealousy at seeing him talking to Castiel.
He knew Castiel wasn't the best at social situations, having been brought up in a similar way to Dean and being taught it was rude to dismiss someone, no matter how annoying you found them to be. It was just how things worked.
He needed to find a way to get to Castiel and rescue him from being subjected to Crowley droning on and on, potentially about his family's estate and how revered his mother Rowena was for single-handedly building up their wealth from nothing. Dean wondered if he could convince Sam to cause a distraction so he could get to Castiel.
-_-_-_-
"Pardon me, I need to borrow my dear brother for a moment," Dean announced as he placed his hand on Sam's arm, bowing to the small group of people that had gathered around his brother. With a shy smile, Sam waved away the others as he turned to face Dean, grateful for the excuse to escape the conversation.
"What is it, Dean?" Sam inquired as he allowed his brother to pull him towards a less crowed part of the room. Dean released his hold on Sam once he was certain they were far enough away from everyone that they wouldn't be overheard.
"I need you to make an announcement or speech of some sort, so that I can get Castiel away from Crowley..." Dean responded honestly, giving Sam a knowing look as he gestured across the room to where Castiel stood talking with Crowley, looking rather uncomfortable. Sam glanced up to where Dean had pointed, immediately spotting the pair.
"Fine... But you owe me later," Sam announced with his signature smirk that Dean knew all too well. Dean nodded without hesitation, he would repay his brother any way possible, especially if it meant he had a chance of getting Castiel alone. He was thankful for Sam, always willing to help him out.
Sam threw a smile at Dean before turning to walk away, he made his way up the grand marble staircase up onto the second floor balcony that looked out over the large, crowded ballroom at the sea of people gathered together. "May I have everyone's attention, please?" Sam spoke loudly, causing everyone to turn and look up at him standing on the balcony.
While Sam was busy distracting their guests, Dean weaved his way through the crowd, offering the odd apology as he pushed his way past people. He eventually reached Castiel and Crowley, stopping in his tracks when both of them turned to stare at him in obvious confusion. Castiel's ocean blue eyes staring at Dean had made his breath catch in his throat.
"Ahem... What is it, Winchester?" Crowley snapped, bringing Dean out of his thoughts of wanting to make Castiel's blue eyes roll into the back of his head. He suddenly felt his cheeks heat up with embarrassment, clearing his throat before answering Crowley's crass question.
"I've come to steal away Mr. Novak for an important discussion, I'm terribly sorry to interrupt what I imagine was a rather riveting conversation..." Dean answered in his sincerest tone, turning his full attention onto Crowley.
Crowley may have been a bit older than Dean, but the Winchesters' held a much higher importance than the MacLeods', especially in their own home. In other words, Crowley couldn't refuse Dean's request to talk to Castiel, and Dean knew that Crowley knew that.
"Of course Mr. Winchester... My apologies," Crowley offered suddenly remembering his manners, glancing around at the crowd as if he was afraid his mother might be nearby. Dean found this amusing, even though he knew Rowena was somewhere in the mansion with his own mother.
"No harm, no foul Mr. MacLeod," Dean waved a dismissive hand towards Crowley, smiling politely as Crowley walked away to disappear into the crowd. Dean turned fully toward Castiel with a huge grin, unable to stop himself when he caught Castiel smiling shyly back at him.
"Thank you for that," Castiel began, beyond grateful for the unexpected rescue from Crowley. Castiel hated being trapped in social obligations, as he wasn't nearly as well versed in such situations as Dean seemed to be. Though Dean was also naturally charismatic compared to himself.
"I saw you in need of rescue, and to be perfectly honest I was sort of jealous seeing Crowley talking to you..." Dean responded, the blush from earlier returning with a vengeance to his cheeks. He glanced down to see Castiel had taken his hand into one of his own, those beautiful blue eyes looking up at him through dark lashes.
"You? Jealous? I never would have imagined," Castiel spoke quietly, stroking his thumb across Dean's knuckles. He wished they weren't surrounded by people all of a sudden, afraid of being caught by someone, especially by either of their parents.
"Is there perhaps somewhere more private we could go?" Castiel inquired, giving Dean an apologetic look as he reluctantly let go of his hand out of fear of someone noticing the intimate gesture between the two of them. Dean smiled faintly, understanding all too well why Castiel removed his hand.
