But he has never seen the kind of devotion this family shows for each other. It is dangerous to get attached to things - especially mortal things - at Tommy's age.

Techno makes a friend, tries to get his pod a gift, and ends up beached. Not really in that order.

Tommy had to have noticed how worn out both his father and older brother had been. Maybe he was bored since they couldn't give him as much attention as they used to. Maybe Tommy was just acting out. Techno didn't know. All he did know, was that he didn't have time to entertain Tommy's silly stories about a person the size of a hamster living in their walls.
