Thanks to the medication cocktail dripping into him from the IV bag, Crystal fell asleep while waiting for his daughter. Buster looked at the wolf with sympathy. The producer couldn't imagine how lonely he must be and he probably felt like he couldn't tell anyone.
At some point, the doctors wheeled in an unconscious Suki, attached to her own array of gadgets and gizmos designed to help her keep breathing. Buster hadn't been entirely honest about Suki's condition but didn't feel like it was his place to be giving any kind of diagnosis or prognosis.
"How is she? Will she be okay?" He asked the doctor as they plugged in her machines.
The doctor sighed. "We were able to drain the hematoma and reduce the swelling. But there's still no brain activity. We're having a specialist brought in for her."
Buster sighed. "Come on, Suki. You're stronger than this. Don't make me tell Crystal you didn't make it, please." He begged. He took her hand and squeezed. He looked at the doctor. "Until you know for sure…. Don't tell Crystal. He has his own recovery to worry about."
The doctor nodded as the door flung open and Porsha ran in. "Daddy!" She cried out. Her cries jarred the wolf awake just in time for her to hug him as best as she could with the bed and machines in the way. "Daddy… I was so scared." She wept.
Unable to return the hug because of his condition, he just sat there, frozen. "Porsha, baby… keep it down, this is a hospital."
She nodded. "Sorry Daddy, I just thought I was going to lose you." She sat into the chair that Buster offered her. She looked over at the Saluki in the other bed. "Aunt Suki?"
Buster nodded. "She's resting." He told her. "She just came out of surgery."
"Will she be okay?" Porsha asked, getting up to look at all the tubes and wires.
Crystal looked at the doctor with harsh eyes. He'd better have the right answer, although he didn't know what he could do either way.
"It's too soon to tell. She was bleeding into her brain. We were able to stop the bleeding and reduce the swelling. Now it's up to her," he told them.
He looked at her and sighed. Because of his haste to try and murder the little koala who had sacrificed the quality of his show to make sure he was alright. Jerry was dead and Suki might never wake up. And yet he survived with relatively minor injuries. He should have been dead, not them.
"Hey, Aunt Suki's strong, Daddy. She'll get better," Porsha squeezed his hand.
The pain medication was making his brain foggy and he trembled brokenly. "It's all my fault…" He whispered, tears dripping down his cheeks. "I got them all killed. Because of me, Suki's fighting for her life." Buster wanted to try and reassure him but there was nothing he could really say.
Porsha squeezed his hand and began crooning softly. "From pigtails to perfume, I'm growing up so soon. I'm going to parties. I love having my own room." His eyes fixed on hers while she sang in an attempt to bring him comfort. "I'll always be daddy's girl, out in the great big world. He's given me the perfect start right from the heart. I'll always be daddy's girl…" By the time she finished the sweet melody, he was back under the medicated sleep.
Buster smiled. "That was really sweet, Porsha." He looked at the sleeping wolf. He was a puzzle. Narcissistic and greedy, definitely power-driven but with a real love for his daughter even if he didn't know how to show it.
She hugged Buster. "Thank you for staying with him. Please, don't hate him. He's really a good person. He's just got these walls that are always up. This is the first time he's had any real sleep. He wakes up at the slightest noise or movement and he suffers from insomnia."
The koala groaned. He didn't want to feel worse for Crystal then he already did. He looked up as the door opened to a red-headed mare. "Ms. LeBon? What are you doing here?"
She grinned sheepishly. "I snuck back. I'm sorry. He's my friend and he's the only one who knows what happened…"
Porsha frowned. "You just want to do another story about him. Even if it hurts him." She challenged the horse.
Linda smiled. "Well, I am a talk show host. I certainly wouldn't try to hurt him but the people deserve to know what happened."
Buster shook his head in astonishment at how bold the horse could be. "No, they don't. This is a private family matter. You're going to respect that. Crystal does not deserve to have his business spread all over the city. Find something else to report on." As much as Crystal loved the spotlight, this woman was no friend to him.
She cocked an eyebrow. "I don't think you have the authority to order me around."
"I don't but hospital security, sure as shit, can throw you out," he picked up Crystal's call button and pushed it.
The nanny goat nurse came in and immediately identified the problem. "What are you doing back here? Family only."
"Then Mr. Moon should leave too," Linda attempted to punish his big mouth.
"Mr. Moon has special permission to be here and you do not. Now get out of here before I have you removed," she ordered.
Linda gave a mighty "harumph" before turning and leaving. Buster knew they'd probably see a story that night anyway but at least then Crystal might see his point.
Porsha smiled at the nurse. "Mr. Moon's troupe also has my permission to come back if they like. I think it's time Daddy had some real friends." She hugged Buster. "Thank you for protecting him. Or trying to, we both know she won't let this stop her."
Buster sighed. "I'll try Porsha. Believe me, there was no one in my life more important to me than my own father. And I will do everything I can to help yours." He promised, returning her hug.
