Chapter Eighteen: The sky-beings

While the sky-being's true from were unknown, for they looked like rainbow faces, disguised themselves to blend in and explore the lush land. However, it wasn't till they landed and set up a base that they discovered Nancy had become pregnant on their journey. With their highly advanced lab, they removed the fetus, adjusting its DNA, and splicing it with a t-rex, the apex of the dinosaur world for good measure. They knew what they did was against orders, that if the higher-ups came pocking around, they couldn't see their young or know of its existence.

"What will we do, Nancy, how will we hide such a child?"

"Find a set of t-rexes who can raise it for us. That way when we leave, we'll know it'll be in good hands. Protected by the fiercest dinosaurs among them."

They didn't have to look too far, for a younger Charity was unable to produce eggs, feeling sad she couldn't be a mother. Then, she met a pair of rainbow faces, smart leaf-eaters, who were able to do some of the strangest things. They lived in a round silver nest that flew and traveled across the skies at great speed.

"I know you can help me," Charity said, knowing they spoke both leaf-eater and sharptooth, which was unheard of. "Please, I don't know how, but I know you can help me."

Nancy and Jonathan shared a glance, Nancy giving a nod. "We've been working on something, a baby. One of your kind as a test to see if a sharptooth can overcome its instincts." Nancy said, thinking it was best if Charity thought they made the egg special for her, rather than making it themselves. "If you'd like, we could let you take care of it."

"Yes, I'd be more than willing to help you."

"There is a catch, the young within won't be anything like you," Jonathan added. "It might be able to talk with you, but he will be like us. Able to speak both languages, probably find it hard to eat the plant-eaters. The baby will be one of a kind, with gifts too, the power to move items with his mind, among other things."

"Jonathan is correct, are you willing to handle the challenge, of raising such a special child? Sharpteeth will find him weak, while plant-eaters will see him as a monster. Do you accept the knowledge, the mammoth task placed upon you?"

"Yes, I will love the young no matter what."

Nancy and Jonathan went to their ship, finding another rainbow face, a messenger from the higher-ups. Acting calm, Nancy went to talk with the guy while Jonathan slipped in to get the egg. Inside the ship, he rushed and saw the white shell with red spots, kept in an incubator. Lifting the lid, he slipped out the back, rushing to meet up with Charity. Along he went, seeing she waited and lit up at the sight of the egg.

"Here, you must go, hurry, before anyone sees you."

Jonathan felt her take the eggs, eyes moist while he saw her walk off, leaving him alone. With a sigh, he placed his hands to his face, crying softly. There went their child, the only one the pair produced together, given their many failed attempts in the past. For it was no lie, they struggled to create and birth young too, finding it was a miracle when Nancy carried a bun in the oven.

When he returned, he found Nancy by the incubator, crying against it. He patted her side, feeling her rush into his hold, sobbing aloud. "Did we do the right thing?"

"We did what was best for our child," Jonathan answered, hoping in the back of his mind, they did the right thing.

While hard, they were encouraged to stay away, watching with droids that flew over the land. Able to see their egg from afar, both eager to know when it hatched. Jonathan fell asleep in front of the screen on night, unaware quite a bit of commotion happened, for the sound was turned off. On the screen, a group of herbivory children, following a set of egg stealers. By accident, they caused a rockslide and stumbled across the t-rex's egg, instead of the one the egg stealers took. The droid zipped in the air, finding the children intended to look after the egg and claim it as their own.

The next day, Nancy walked by in time, seeing the egg crack. "Jonathan! The egg, our child is about to hatch." She shook his hand harder than intended, due to excitement.

Groggily, Johnathan tried to collect himself, looking at the screen. From the shell, a leg broke out, the top covering their child's face. With a toss of the head, their son was revealed to them, being blue, with red eyes and three fingers instead of the typical two.

"Our son," Jonathan said, rubbing his eyes.

"He's blue, quite a strange color for a t-rex."

"But not for our kind," Jonathan added.

The pair watched, seeing that their son, whom the longneck named Chomper, interact with the prey. Chomper never tried to attack, only biting the three-horn's tail in a playful act, meaning no harm. It was wonderful, to see he was healthy, happy, and not hated by the five kids. When the t-rexes showed up to get him, Nancy saw how they cuddled the boy, the child they guessed was their son. The t-rexes left the Valley, taking Chomper with them. Sadly, it was time for the couple to leave for their world, unable to say a final goodbye, which pained them both to no end. Yet, no matter how far their expeditions took them, Nancy and Jonathan kept an eye out, watching the recordings of the day, proud when he started talking sharptooth. All of his activities were documented, and pictures were placed in an album with notes they took.

While space was endless, cold, and dark, they were given glimpses of life in Chomper, who grew before their eyes, seeing his leaf-eater friends again and recalling them well, having a good memory. Not only that, but Chomper was able to take care of the five, provide a safe place to hide, and feed them, doing more than they did for him within the Great Valley. After bidding them farewell, Chomper and his parents left the Mysterious Island. Crossing the Mysterious Beyond, he met a very interesting fastrunner girl, who was kind and befriended him without any trace of fear.

Through the years, they saw Chomper grow from a kid to an adult, leaving to live his own life, rejected by the Valley when he grew too big. It was hard to bear, Johnathan wanting to intervene, while Nancy said not to, fearful interfering would do more harm than good. They had to be strong, wait, till the day he'd come to them, and seek them out to know the truth. Indeed, they'd return to the planet of dinosaurs, but they had to keep away and wait for Chomper to come to them.

Watching the documents, Chomper only then noticed a few pictures they had of him, clearly missing, wanting him to be a part of their lives despite the great distance between them. Jonathan offered the album, flipping through it to show many more pictures.

"That one is one of my favorites, it's when you learned to track." Johnathan pointed to the picture, smiling while his eyes were glassy. "You trailed your scent, but it was cute nonetheless."

"I know you're mad and don't understand why we didn't care for you or take you with us. Space travel was place to raise a child. But we were there, watching always, missing you every day." Nancy added, going and rubbing Chomper's face, seeing a single tear stream down his cheek. "You are far from the typical sharptooth, stronger than you could imagine. We asked Charity if she'd still love the youngling, accept whomever it was. That they'd be different, not normal, one of a kind. She agreed and vowed to love the young no matter what. To love you for us."

"Why didn't you ever come to see me?"

"Your mother thought it'd be best to wait till you were older, were ready to learn. Course when we heard of her death, we figured we'd never see you." Jonathan swallowed a few times, clearly hurt by the thought of never seeing their son. "We loved you so much, that we let you go."

Chomper was silent for a moment, trying to take it all in. His mother knew the rainbow faces, and asked for their help, to make and give him to her. It did explain some stuff, being able to speak both languages, having powers, and being so different from the rest of his kind. Nancy and Jonathan didn't push Chomper to talk, letting him soak up what they revealed to him

"Tell us, are you able to communicate with those you care about across great distances yet?" Nancy inquired, seeing Chomper look at her with confusion. "I thought not, let us show you." Offering a hand to him, she hoped he'd take it. "Let us be there for you now."
