Hey everybody, y'all all right? Sorry it's taken a little longer to update but there's a lot going on here. It's the beginning of a new week, and that means a new chapter.
So glad so many of you are still here with me trying to figure out where this thing is going. Thank you for your patience. I so appreciate all of you, and your reviews and PMs. I always read them and this time I decided to answer one of your questions.
"I have a question regarding Fitz's and Olivia's age, how old are they? The question is because of what Joey said to Olivia "what could a younger guy possibly offer me"?
To the Guest who asked this question, Olivia is thirty (Chapter 1) and Fitz will be thirty-three. (Chapter 4) The "younger guy" is in reference to Malcolm La Blue, who was a few years younger than Olivia, and who tried to proposition her at the pool party in Chapter 2.
Hope that helps.
This is another lengthy one, and I enjoyed writing it. Happy reading.

Sunday afternoon…
Olivia and Fitz sat in her car in the driveway of Eli and Maya Pope's large Crestwood neighborhood home. He knew she needed a moment as he rubbed the muscles at the nape of neck. She gripped the stirring wheel while trying to reel in her thoughts and emotions, and prepare herself, which was silly, actually. She was as ready as she'd ever be to face her mother. She just hoped that what they were about to do wouldn't turn into a disaster.
"Are you okay?" Fitz asked. He already knew the answer to his question.
Olivia sighed. "I thought this was a good idea four days ago, but now I'm not so sure."
"Are you nervous about introducing me to your parents?"
She shook her head. "Not my parents, The Maya Pope. She can be so unpredictable at times."
Fitz chuckled. "Livvie, I've faced down three-hundred pound defensive lineman, your mother can't be bad."
Olivia lifted a brow that said he didn't know her mother.
She actually hated that she was so nervous. But she was worried that her mother would do or say something to embarrass her in front of Fitz. At least Julian had a small advantage. Their mother knew Joey. She wanted her mother to like Fitz, though she knew it didn't really matter whether she didn't, because she did.
"Well, try to relax," he said as he continued his ministrations and felt her slowly relaxing. "I'll be by your side. Don't worry."
She turned to Fitz. "Thank you, baby."
Fitz kissed her forehead. "You don't have to thank me. That's what boyfriends are for." He gave her that lopsided grin.
"Well I'm thanking you anyway," she said, taking his face in her hands and pulling him closer so she could give him a gentle kiss on the lips.
"Ready?" he asked.
"As ready as I'll ever be. Let's do this."
Fitz laughed as he moved to open his door. "You know, I never ride in the passenger seat." But he'd do anything to help her relax.
"Only for you, Livvie, only for you."
X
Earlier…
"Livvie you've been working since six this morning," It was currently after one o' clock, "and you only stopped when I brought you lunch earlier. You really should take a break," Fitz said as he leaned down and kissed the back of her neck.
Olivia moaned and stretched. She knew he was right. And she was exhausted. She'd been up before the sun, leaving Fitz in bed asleep. In the past six hours she'd gone over final case notes, any anticipated problems that could arise during trial, because Olivia didn't like surprises, and prepared her opening statement. The trial was only expected to last a few days, but she still had to be on top of her game. She was ready.
"Why don't you come up and lay down with me for a little while?"
Olivia turned to look at him, and her brown eyes lit up and crinkled when she smiled. "You can't be serious."
He nodded. "Oh I'm very serious, Miss Pope. Now, come on."
Olivia gathered her files and folders and stuffed them, along with her laptop, into her litigation case,. When she finished, Fitz reached out his hand to her and she took it, standing with him. Silently, they took the back stairs up to his bedroom. The double doors were open and they walked through the large sitting room with its double sided fireplace, sofa, chaise and television, and into the bedroom where the custom king-size bed was the focal point.
Fitz watched as Olivia continued walking through the French doors that led to the large private balcony. She looked out beyond the massive terrace, pool, tennis and basketball courts to the Virginia countryside. She wasn't surprised when she felt Fitz's arms wrap around her waist, and she relaxed completely, leaning back against the solid wall of his chest. He placed a kiss on the side of her neck. Her hands covered the arms wrapped around her waist.
For the first time in a long time Olivia knew what it meant to be content. This man was so much more than what she believed him to be, and she loved him.
"This view is spectacular."
"It sure is," he said, looking directly at Olivia. He couldn't care less about the countryside.
"It makes me want to stay here forever."
Fitz squeezed her tighter. "You don't have to leave, Livvie." And he meant it.
Turning slightly, she stared at him over her shoulder and smiled. "There you go being nice again."
"I'm serious," he murmured. What he was about to say to Olivia, six months ago, Fitzgerald Grant would not have entertained.
"I want to commit to you, Livvie. I don't want anyone but you. Can you handle that? Let me know now."
Olivia turned around in his arms to face him, stared into those eyes and felt as if she was going to cry. His heartfelt words grabbed hold of her heart and wouldn't let go. She had fallen in love with this man and she wasn't really sure how or when. Standing on her toes, she kissed him softly on the lips, before sliding both hands underneath his t-shirt and lifted it to reveal his muscled chest. She peppered kisses down the center of his chest and his washboard abs. Fitz nearly buckled from the warmth of her hands caressing him.
"I can handle it, baby," she finally said. Closing her eyes, she wrapped her arms around his waist and leaned against him.
Suddenly, she felt herself lifted off the ground, his hands digging into her backside. Olivia wrapped her legs around his waist and her arms around his neck, as he re-entered the bedroom and walked them over to the large bed. He sat, with Olivia straddling his lap, took her face into his hands and stared into her beautiful brown doe eyes.
"Are you ready to take a nap with me?" he whispered as one hand moved to her breast and the other snaked between her thighs. Still looking into her beautiful eyes, he stroked her bundle of nerves.
Olivia couldn't respond because she'd bitten down on her bottom lip and thrown back her head as Fitz's fingers worked their magic. Her head finally fell forward and she nodded.
"Yes-s-s." The word was slurred as she slowly began to move her hips.
Closing her eyes, she let her senses take over. She felt Fitz lift her slightly, caught the hem of the short black tank dress she was wearing and began to lift it over her body. Olivia lifted her arms obediently and sat still until he'd removed the dress completely.
Fitz sat staring at her bare breasts with awe and reverence, as if it was his first time seeing them. Grinning at her, he lowered his head and began to suckle one, then the other nipple, rolling his tongue across them. Olivia cupped the back of his head as he continued nibbling gently.
She was caught off guard when he slid one large finger inside her.
"Oh!" she cried out, gripping his hair and opening her legs a little more.
"Do you know how wet you are?" he whispered.
Olivia's answer was to open her legs wider as she ground against his finger. "Please, Fitz. I want you now," she moaned. He heard her voice through the haze.
"What do you want?"
Their gazes locked. "I want you inside me."
Without another word, he stood with Olivia in his arms and laid her in the center of the bed. She felt his soft but strong hands reach for her panties. He removed the black lacy Hanky Panky boyshorts and tossed them over his shoulder. Then he stood and stared. "You are so beautiful."
She blushed. He made her feel beautiful.
Quickly, he removed his black t-shirt, cotton black Nike shorts, and his black boxer briefs. Reaching over to the night table, he grabbed a condom and ripped the packet open with his teeth. His gaze remained on her as he took his time rolling the latex down his hard, thick erection. Did she just lick her lips? He got harder, as if that was possible.
"You okay, Livvie?"
All she could do was nod, her eyes glazed over with desire. Silently, she reached out her arms to him. Fitz climbed onto the bed and moved between Olivia's wide-spread legs. His hands squeezed her thighs. Instinctively, she wrapped her arms around his neck and their gazes locked and held.
Fitz took her hand and guided it to his dick. "Let's do this together."
Olivia's hand barely fit around his girth as she positioned the engorged head at her slick and wet entrance. Fitz's hand covered hers as he eased himself into her body inch by delicious inch.
"Take all of me, Livvie."
"Yes-s-s, Fitz." Her walls stretched to accommodate him as he continued to push deeper inside of her, until he was buried to the hilt. They both groaned at the sensation.
Fitz kissed her leisurely, as he gave her time to breathe in deeply and adjust to his size, before he began moving his large body. Olivia wrapped her arms around his neck and her legs went around waist as her hips lifted to meet his thrusts. Their bodies rocked back and forth, giving and taking. He knew exactly what spot to hit to make her moan and drive her insane.
She whimpered when Fitz squeezed her breasts. Her nails raked his scalp when he leaned down and suckled her nipple. Her hands moved to his face and lifted his head until their mouths connected in a deep kiss, as their bodies moved together in perfect sync.
Fitz came up for air and watched the expressions on her face as he drove deep into her body, over and over again, and all Olivia could do was hold on.
"Is this what you wanted, Livvie?"
"Yes," she panted. "Yes. More."
"Good," he grunted and gave her more. His hands held her hips, his fingers digging into her skin as he moved inside her, hard and fast, and relentless. It was intense and she moaned and writhed beneath him.
He leaned down and kissed her neck, her collarbone and her shoulder, as her hips came up to meet each thrust. Her breathing was ragged. Her hands roamed over his muscled shoulders, his back and his tight butt, where she squeezed, pulling him deeper inside her.
"Let go, Livvie."
"Nooo, Fitz," she whined, rolling her head side to side on the pillow, shaking it no.
"Yes. Come for me," he whispered in her ear as one hand reached between their bodies and slipped through the slickness between her legs, finding her clit.
And she did. The pressure from his fingers sent her spiraling out of control. She screamed his name as her body exploded, and she came loud, hard and long.
"Livvie!" he cried as he continued to pound into her. He groaned into her neck as his body stiffened. He plunged into her, harder, faster, once, twice, again and came, his own release muffled into her shoulder.
He collapsed on top of her, pressing her into the mattress. She could hardly breathe and didn't much care. She reached up and stroked his face, planting little kisses across his forehead and nose.
"I'm crushing you." He moved to lift himself off her, but she held onto him.
"No you're not."
He pulled out gently, rolled over onto his back, and pulled her onto his chest. They lay wrapped around each other, breathing heavily, but completely relaxed.
"I could hold you like this forever," he said.
Olivia lay in silence, unable to move or to speak. She was too drained and exhausted to respond.
When she remained quiet, Fitz leaned down and saw that she was half asleep, and a sated smile covered her beautiful face. He didn't want to move but he needed to get up and discard the condom. Finally, he lifted Olivia's almost weightless body and laid her next to him, and went to the bathroom.
When he returned, she lay on her side, her hair spread out on his pillow. He climbed into bed and pulled her close to his large body; her hips were pressed to his groin. He covered them with both with the sheet and kissed her forehead. There was no need to talk. Their bodies had said everything there was to be said, and within a few minutes he joined her for a much needed afternoon nap.
X
Two hours later...
"Are you awake, sleepy head?" Olivia asked as she trailed a finger over his lips.
"I am now," Fitz grinned and lightly smacked her naked butt, before grabbing her hand and placing it on his semi-erect dick. The part of him that had given her such incredible pleasure.
"You are so nasty," she said kissing his lips, and moving off his chest. "Come on, we need to shower and get dressed so we can get to D.C. Being late to Sunday dinner is not an option, and I do not want to give my mother any reason to complain."
"Alright." He knew her level of anxiety was running high at the thought of introducing him to her parents, and he didn't want to add to it. So he moved to sit up and then stand from the bed, following her into the bathroom.
X
Even though Fitz had started getting dressed after Olivia, he was sitting downstairs in his office scrolling on his laptop. Glancing at his watch, he closed the computer and stood from the desk. Walking into foyer, he called up to his girlfriend.
"Let's go, Olivia Pope. It's getting late."
"I'm ready," she said standing at the top of the stairs. She descended them, never taking her eyes from his, and when they stood face to face, they burst out laughing.
"No one's going to believe we didn't coordinate our looks," Olivia said.
Fitz nodded. "Well I had no idea what was in your dress bag before I got dressed. You look stunning, as always, Livvie."
And she did in a white linen balloon-sleeve mini dress, with large navy peonies. It was belted at the waist, with a flowing, A-line fit, and stopped above her knees. The four-inch, chocolate brown leather sandals that wrapped around the ankle, made her legs seem to go on forever. She'd flat-ironed her hair and it hung straight past her shoulders. Her only jewelry was diamond studs, Fitz's bracelet and her Movado watch, and her make-up was subtle, as usual.
Fitz looked at from her head to her hot pink toes, and up again. He grinned. His lady was always well put together.
"Thank you, babe. And you're handsome as well."
He was dapper in a tailored blue and white seersucker jacket, custom white chinos, a Ralph Lauren Purple Label dark chambray shirt and dark brown leather oxfords. The gorgeous couple looked as if they were headed to a polo match, instead of dinner. His curls were tousled to perfection and his face was free of the stubble that had been there earlier.
Fitz moved closer to Olivia and pushed her hair over to one shoulder, closed his eyes and inhaled deeply, smelling her perfume. "You smell so good, baby."
She smiled and closed her eyes. When she opened them, she looked directly into his hooded blue ones and read exactly what was on his mind.
"Oh no, mister, we have to go. There's probably going to be traffic into the city, even at this hour." Any other time she might have given the idea of a quickie some thought, but not today.
Olivia removed her keys from the Gucci Beige Bamboo Mini Wicker shoulder bag she carried.
Fitz frowned. "I'm not driving your car."
"No, you're not. I'm driving my car and you're riding shotgun. So come on, let's go."
Fitz laughed. "Oh, so you're the boss now?"
She nodded and smiled. "I sure am. Now let's go before I make you work overtime tonight."
Fitz raised his brows. "I don't know boss, I just might like that."
Olivia chuckled. "I'll keep that in mind."
He grabbed the wine bag and flowers and followed Olivia toward the mud room and out to the garage. Fitz wasn't accustomed to being driven around by anybody, but if it meant Olivia returning to his home and spending another night, she could drive him anywhere.

"You two planning to sit in there all afternoon?" Julian called, knocking on the hood of Olivia's car as he and Joey approached the driver's side window.
"Get off my car, J," Olivia said. She didn't appreciate her brother banging on the hood.
They hadn't even noticed when Julian's car pulled into the driveway. Olivia almost didn't recognize Joey, who had drastically toned down her usual style and wore a midi wrap dress in black, with short flutter sleeves, and black open-toe pumps. Her curls had been brushed back into a neat bun, and like Olivia, her make-up was subtle. She didn't want to give Maya Pope any reason to dislike her any more than she already did.
Olivia waited as Fitz exited the Audi's passenger side and came around to assist her. Extending his hand, he helped her to her feet. Then he pulled her into his arms and kissed her.
"Get a room, you two," Julian said, laughing.
"Mind you business, Julian," Fitz responded, also laughing.
He'd met Olivia's brother the previous evening when they all went out for dinner and dancing in D.C. It was Julian's idea. He'd called Olivia who was on her way to Great Falls to spend the evening and night with Fitz. Since he'd never met Fitz in person, he thought it was a good idea to meet him before introducing their significant others to their parents. Olivia thought it was a great idea as well, and that's how they all ended up at Cuba Libre for a night of delicious and authentic Cuban cuisine, traditional sangria and salsa dancing.
Julian was her big brother and he could also be annoying, but he was also her biggest cheerleader, her support and her protector. As she grew older it was always J.P. who she didn't want to disappoint. That's why it was so important for the two men in her life to get along. The one guy she'd wanted to punch when she was younger was now the only man whose opinion mattered because he was the one guy who knew her better than Fitz did.
When they'd arrived at the restaurant, and introductions were made, Julian had looked Fitz up and down before extending his hand. Fitz had been very accommodating to Julian, who pulled no punches in his direct questioning of him. But she'd worried for nothing because Fitz and Julian got along seamlessly. They bonded over having little sisters, and their love for Olivia, and they were both just smart, thoughtful, insightful men, with great senses of humor.
The Pope siblings were currently sitting and watching Fitz spin Joey around the dance floor in a lively salsa.
"You deserve a happily-ever-after, Liv."
Olivia looked up at her brother. "You've really gotten mushy since you and Jo started dating," she teased, lightly nudging his arm.
Julian laughed. "They say love will do that to you. But I think you already know that," he said giving her a pointed look.
Olivia swallowed, unable to deny the truth.
He leaned down and gave her kiss on the cheek. "I'm really happy for you, Liv. And I can see that Fitz loves you too. But if he does anything to hurt you I will track him down and kick his ass."
Olivia stared at her brother. Was he serious? Yes, he was. She squeezed his hand. "I don't think you have to worry about that, J."
He nodded. "I know. Fitz is a good guy. You done good, little sister!"
Olivia laughed. "Thank you, big brother."

The foursome stood at the door of the home that Julian and Olivia had grown up in. For some reason, Olivia and Joey felt as if they were headed to their own executions, Julian was indifferent, and Fitz was actually excited to meet her parents, especially her mother. It's nice that one of us is a civilized adult, she mused.
The time had come for the truth to be told and today was as good as any. It hadn't taken Olivia long to convince Julian to go along with her plan, but Joey was a different story. The idea of telling Maya Pope that she was dating her precious son, scared her to death. That woman was intimidating. Only Julian's promise that he wouldn't leave her alone with his mother for a second convinced her to finally change her mind.
Fitz, on the other hand, was easy. He knew that Olivia had issues with her mother and never pushed her to meet her parents. When she asked if he'd join them for Sunday dinner, he didn't hesitate to say yes.
"Ready?" Olivia asked.
All three nodded. She rang the doorbell before using her key to unlock the door. Placing her hand on the doorknob, she paused to settle her nerves before easing it open.
She wasn't surprised to see her mother walking down the hallway toward the two-story foyer with her arms wide open, the beautiful and colorful Trina Turk caftan she wore, flowing behind her. Eli Pope was a few steps behind. What did surprise her were the two strangers trailing behind them.
"Julian and Olivia, my babies," Maya said, before they were fully able to enter the house.
"Hi, Mom, you look great," Olivia said, walking into her mother's arms.
"Thank you, baby," Maya replied before she pulled her daughter into a tight hug. The smell of Chanel No. 5, her mother's signature fragrance, wafted to her nostrils.
Olivia had always thought her mother was beautiful, but as Maya aged she'd become even more stunning. But as beautiful as her mother was, she could also be aloof, unsympathetic, and a snob. She held people to her own personal standards, standards Olivia, as a young girl, had sometimes found impossible to meet.
Maya Pope had always had the regal carriage of someone used to receiving deference and respect, and not wasting her time with silliness. Her hair was stylish in a shoulder length bob which was expertly colored to hide any gray. It made her look, without exaggeration, at least fifteen years younger than her fifty-eight years. Flawless diamonds in her ears, similar to her daughter's, matched the stones in her wedding ring.
Looking at her Olivia knew what she would look like in about twenty-five years. She was her mother's twin, but without the height.
When Maya released her daughter, she then reached for her son, while Olivia hugged her father.
"Hi, Daddy."
"How's my baby girl?"
"I'm fine."
No one acknowledged the two strangers standing together in the hallway.
"I'm so glad you're both here today," Maya said. "When I mentioned to some friends that you were coming, they insisted on joining us. Olivia I'd like you to meet Marcus Walker, and Julian, I'd like you to meet Angela Webster."
Olivia glanced at her brother, but it was too late to do anything about it now. Julian opened the front door wider and Joey and Fitz stepped fully into the foyer. He closed the door and Olivia watched Maya stop mid sentence as she noticed the two extra people.
Maya looked at Joey. "I didn't expect to see you today. But, as always, you are more than welcome."
She tried to hide her annoyance, but Olivia picked up on it immediately. Judging from the introductions of Marcus and Angela, Maya Pope had tried to play matchmaker for her son and daughter, again.
"I see you brought a friend with you," Maya said, glancing at Fitz. "Any friend of Josephine's is always welcome. We can add two additional place settings. It's no trouble at all."
"Wait a minute," Eli said, releasing his daughter. He was a lot more laid-back and easy going than his high-strung wife. "Fitz Grant?" he asked.
Marcus snapped his fingers as if finally remembering something. "The Football Team quarterback!" He couldn't tamp down his enthusiasm or his excitement as he practically pushed Olivia aside trying to shake Fitz's hand. "Man, I'm a huge fan." He was grinning from ear to ear. "It's a pleasure to meet you."
Fitz set the wine bag and flowers he was holding on a nearby table, and then shook his hand. "Nice to meet you, Marcus."
Eli was right behind Marcus. "I'm a season ticket holder. Last season didn't end the way we would have liked, but you're a heck of a player, son."
"Thank you, Mr. Pope," Fitz said, shaking his hand.
"Please, call me Eli."
Maya looked from Fitz to her husband, confused. She had no idea what was going on or who this tall young man her husband and guest were excited to meet was.
"Does someone want to explain to me who this man is and why we are so thrilled to meet him?"
Eli turned to his wife. "This is Fitzgerald Grant. He's the starting quarterback for the Washington Football Team. He's led the team to several playoff games and two championship games. Many, including me, consider him one of the best in the game."
"Oh," Maya said, duly impressed with the presence of a celebrity in her home. "I always knew Josephine had good taste. Welcome to our home."
Julian and Olivia glanced at each other again and tried to keep from laughing at their mother's obvious mistake.
"Um, Mom?"
"What is it son?"
Julian moved closer to Joey. "Fitz is not here with Josephine."
She nodded in understanding. "Well I guess if Olivia was bringing Josephine, you thought it was okay to bring one of your friends as well. Why don't we head into the living room for a few minutes until dinner is ready."
Maya Pope had totally missed what her son was saying.
Julian sighed deeply and shook his head at Olivia. "Mom, listen…"
"Olivia, I have you seated next to Marcus, and Julian, you're next to Angela," Maya said as she walked away from everyone.
She stopped when she realized that no one was following her. When she turned to face everyone again, she waved them all forward.
"What are you all waiting for?"
Julian put his arm around Joey's waist and hugged her to him. "Fitz didn't come with me either."
Maya stared at the arm that was wrapped around Joey.
"I see."
From her even tone, no one could tell if she was happy, upset or indifferent.
"You know what?" Angela said, feeling awkward at the latest developments. "I don't think I'm going to be able to stay for dinner. Maybe some other time."
Maya didn't acknowledge the young woman's words or her exit. Instead, her focus moved from Julian and Joey to Fitz and Olivia.
"Olivia?"
Following her brother's lead, Olivia reached for Fitz's hand and squeezed it tightly. "Fitz is here with me."
"Uh, on second thought," Marcus said, "I have some things I need to take care of as well. It was nice meeting all of you." He turned and made a hasty exit.
Maya tried to maintain her composure as the two arranged dates for her son and daughter left. After the front door closed behind Marcus, all eyes turned to her. Maya Pope had a well documented history of being overly dramatic and Olivia hoped this would not be one of those times.
"How long has this been going on?" she asked, glancing from Olivia to Julian.
Olivia was glad to see that her mother had opted to stay away from the dramatics. Her question was asked rather calmly.
"Fitz and I met over a month ago."
"Josephine and I have been seeing each other for the last six months, and we're in love," Julian said, kissing her cheek.
"And this is how your father and I found out? When did you both decide that we didn't need to know what was going on in your lives? Did you hear that, Eli?" Maya said turning to face her husband. "Our son and daughter have been dating these people for months and didn't bother to tell us."
Eli nodded. "I heard it, and I don't blame them."
Five heads snapped in his direction, but Maya also wore a scowl on her face.
"I've told your mother, on several occasions, to stop meddling in your love lives. I know it's been embarrassing, overbearing and annoying for you both. But of course she didn't listen," Eli said, gently reprimanding his wife.
"You promised to stop with the matchmaking, Mom," Julian added.
Maya lifted her eyebrows at her son. "I wasn't matchmaking."
Olivia looked at her mother. "Then what would you call it?" she asked in a disbelieving voice.
"I wanted you two to find partners who will love you as much as your father has loved me for almost 40 years," she said.
Maya's voice wavered between sounding indignant and really hurt. Julian and Olivia had learned over the years that when it came to using guilt as a weapon, Maya Pope could use it with expert precision.
"Mom, what do you call inviting two complete strangers to dinner and introducing them to me and Liv?"
"I just thought that Marcus and Angela would be good people for you two to meet. You all had so much in common."
"So my love life is so pitiful that you felt you needed to play matchmaker yet again?" Olivia asked.
"No, no, baby. Not at all."
Eli shook his head. "Matchmaking can be a risky game, and trying to fix up your own children can result in an awkward situation, which is what just happened here."
"And it isn't helpful, Mom," Julian added.
"I just feel it's time for you and your sister to find that special someone, and settle down. You both work so hard, I thought you needed a little help."
"Didn't you think they could find their own partners? They didn't need to be conned into meeting people you thought would be perfect and suitable for them." He looked at the foursome staring at him, and smiled. "It looks as if they've both done just that and now you can leave them alone."
Maya didn't respond to her husband. She turned to Julian and Olivia. "Is there anything else we need to know? Are either of you married? Have children? Maybe you've moved across country and didn't tell us."
"Actually, now that you mention it," Julian said.
Maya's eyes shot darts at her son and she looked as if she was about to pass out.
"Relax, Mom," Julian said. "None of that has happened…yet."
Turning to Joey, Julian held both of her hands and smiled at her. "I've known you for years, but never understood what a priceless jewel you are. To me you were always my little sister's annoying best friend."
He glanced at Olivia and smiled. She winked at him.
"I disliked you on sight, but over the years realized later that I was only fighting the inevitable. You have become my friend, my confidante, my lover, my everything. Now I want to make you my wife. I love you, Josephine."
Julian's heartfelt admission took everyone by surprise and Joey attempted to stop the tears freely falling down her cheeks.
He got down on one knee right in the foyer of his parent's home, and took Joey's hand in his. Maya gasped, Eli smiled broadly at his son, and Fitz put his arm around Olivia's waist, squeezing her to him.
"Josephine Sofia de Matteo, will you marry me?" Joey's eyes widened. "Will you make me the happiest man in the world?"
Joey nodded her head incessantly. "Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!" she yelled. "Yes!" She jumped up and down, squealing with glee.
Standing to his feet, Julian took her face in his hands and kissed her deeply and passionately. Reaching into the pocket of his jacket, he removed a small, velvet ring box and opened it to reveal a stunning emerald cut diamond. He removed it from the box and nervously slid it onto her ring finger, and then pulled her into his arms.
Fitz stood grinning at the couple. He'd never been close to this kind of love in his life. Dre had it with Jada, and of course his parents shared it, but to watch it unfold like this was a surreal experience. All that Joey was to Julian, Olivia had become to him. She gave him something he didn't know he was missing, or needed. Their time together had shown him what truly sharing your life with someone really meant.
Olivia looked up at him and he wiped away the tears on her cheeks with the pad of his thumb. Boldly he leaned in close to kiss her on the lips. Then he whispered near her ear. "They're almost as beautiful together as we are."
Olivia nodded, unable to speak. It was obvious that this moment had affected him the way it had her. Over the years she had been so focused on her career, putting her love life on the shelf and being cynical about men that she'd given no thought to marriage. And it had cost her. Now that she had witnessed the power of what love could do, she had a strong desire to have the same thing…with Fitz.
X
After Eli, Fitz and Olivia congratulated the newly engaged couple, everyone turned to Maya, whose eyes were filled with tears.
"Oh, come here, you two," she said opening, her arms. Giving each of them a big hug, she stepped back and smiled at her son and future daughter-in-law.
Taking Joey's hands, she grew serious. "Welcome to our family and congratulations. My son is very happy," she said. "And that's because of you." She hugged her again.
"Thank you," Joey responded in a teary voice.
"And I love the ring, it's beautiful."
Joey nodded.
"I'm going to call Zora when she and Michael return stateside." Drs. Michael and Zora de Matteo, Joey's parents, were currently in Italy spending the summer with Joey's paternal grandparents, and extended family. They were both college professors, Dr. Michael at American University, and Dr. Zora at Howard University. For the life of her, Maya never understood how their only child could be so...so…common. But her son loved her, and was now engaged to be married, and that was all that mattered.
"Now, how soon before I get some grandbabies?"
Everyone burst into laughter. Now that one of her children was getting married, Maya Pope wasted no time moving on to the next big thing: babies.

"So, Olivia, aren't you going to properly introduce Fitzgerald to your father and me, now that things have calmed down?" Maya asked as they all sat around the Pope's well appointed living room.
Olivia smiled, happy with the turn of events. She stood, along with Fitz and her parents. "Yes, of course. Mother, Daddy this is Fitzgerald Grant. Fitz, these are my parents, Eli and Maya Pope."
Eli extended her hand, and Fitz shook it.
"It is nice to meet you at last, Mr. and Mrs. Pope," he said with a chuckle, as if they hadn't already met. He then took Maya Pope's hand and leaned in and kissed her cheek. "It may sound a bit cliché, Mrs. Pope, but I can certainly see where Olivia inherited her beauty."
"How sweet," Maya said. She was trying to appear aloof, but it was apparent that she liked Fitz, and what he'd said. He may not be the man she would have chosen for her daughter, but she didn't care, as long as Olivia was dating someone, and she appeared to be very happy. He was tall, good-looking and very well-mannered, which pleased Maya immensely.

Minutes later, Mrs. Pitts, who had held dinner for thirty minutes, announced that it was officially ready.
Eli Pope put an arm around Joey's waist and led her to the dining room. He'd had some suspicion that Julian had more than a passing interest in his sister's best friend, and he told her so.
"So, you and my son finally decided to behave like adults, did you? It's about time. I was wondering if you two were ever going to get over your foolishness and see that you were meant for each other," he said affectionately.
Joey blushed. She and Eli Pope had always gotten along. He sometimes referred to her as his other daughter. Still, it was rather touching to have his obvious approval. She smiled at him sweetly and was about to speak when he added a bit of wisdom.
"All I can tell you is to take care of each other and love each other. And for God's sake, elope. Because we both know my wife is going to be insufferable with the wedding planning."
Joey laughed, knowing he was telling the truth.
"I heard that," Maya called to her husband.
"You were supposed to," Eli responded, and continued to the dining room.
Everyone, including Maya, laughed.

Maya watched Eli and Joey walk to the dining room, and then turned to look at Fitz.
"Olivia never told me about you."
"She didn't tell me much about you, either."
"I'm not surprised," she said dryly. "But I can see my daughter loves you. Maybe it was best she kept you to herself for a while."
Fitz did an admirable job of keeping his cool, listening to Maya Pope. She knew her daughter loved him. "Well, I'm in love with Olivia." He looked into her eyes, identical to her daughter's. "Do I have your permission to date her?"
Maya broke out in surprised and joyful laughter. She put her arm through his, and led him in the direction of the dining room. "I like you."
Fitz laughed. "Mrs. Pope, I think we're going to get along just fine," he said as they left the living room.
Olivia and Julian stood watching their parents and significant others, laughing and talking like old friends, until they left they room.
She grinned at her brother. "It worked, J."
Julian stretched out a fist to his sister, and she gave him a pound.
"This was a good idea, Liv. Maybe now she'll stay out of our business."
Olivia frowned. "Have you met our mother?"
Julian threw back his head and laughed. "Good point. But I think she's learned a hard lesson."
"I certainly hope so."
"Now," he said, offering her his arm, "Shall we?"
Olivia accepted and they went to join their family for dinner.

"You don't have much time before training camp begins," Eli Pope said to Fitz as he cut into the tender roast Mrs. Pitts had prepared. "I imagine you guys are ready to finish what you started last season. One game away," he said, a wistful look on his face.
"Definitely," Fitz replied, still not over the NFC Championship game loss.
"What are you six-four, about two-twenty?" Eli asked.
Fitz wiped his mouth with a linen napkin before answering. "I'm closer to two hundred twenty-five. I've put on about five more pounds of muscle over the past two months."
Joey glanced at Olivia and winked.
"That's a good height and weight for a quarterback," Julian added.
Fitz nodded. "I can see my receivers better, which of course cuts down on interceptions."
"Which also pisses off the d-backs," Julian said with a chuckle.
"Julian. Watch your language, please," Maya admonished, while everyone else laughed.
"Sorry, Mom."
Maya nodded, and then turned to Fitz. "I haven't heard the details of how you and Olivia met."
"Yeah," Julian said, grinning at his sister. "Where did you meet a superstar quarterback?"
Olivia was not the least bit amused by her brother's question and glanced at Fitz before she answered. "At a pool party."
"A pool party?" Maya asked, surprise in her voice. "You went to a pool party?" she asked, looking at Olivia.
Fitz stretched his arm across the back of Olivia's chair. "The annual pool party on my estate is a fundraiser for my foundation," he explained. "We usually raise a few million for scholarships and other needs and services for the high school athletes who come through our programs."
"I was there for a good cause," Olivia added, and took a sip of the excellent wine Fitz had bought. Her mother didn't need to know that Joey had had to blackmail her, and practically drag her kicking and screaming.
"Did you even know who Fitz Grant was?" Eli asked.
Fitz chuckled and looked at Olivia. "At the time, I don't think she did."
"I knew the name but I didn't recognize the face," she said in her defense. "I work in an office filled with men, so I'm not that bad with sports." She smiled at Fitz. "He was shocked that I didn't know who he was."
They all laughed as Fitz joined in at his own expense.
"She's right, she had no idea," he agreed.
"Do you have any family in the area?" Maya asked.
"My sister is an underclassman at GW but the rest of the Grant family is in New York City."
Maya looked at him and tilted her head. "Are you related to the Grants who are developing a lot of the city?" she asked.
Fitz didn't really like discussing the family business since he wasn't a part of it. But if it would score him more points with Olivia's mother, he would. "Yes. That's my family's business, which was founded by my grandfather. My father is the current CEO."
That information peaked Maya's interest, which didn't surprise Olivia. Her mother may like Fitz but his job as the Football Team's quarterback hadn't impressed her. But, learning about his family's old money and social status did.
"Where did you attend college?" she asked.
"I graduated from Stanford with a degree in Economics."
"And you decided to play professional football." It wasn't a question. "How did your parents feel about that?"
"Mother," Olivia said in a warning tone, glaring at Maya.
Fitz leaned down and kissed her hair. "It's okay Livvie," he whispered.
"They weren't happy at first. I mean, how could their privileged son decline a position with the family-run real estate empire to become a common football player? How were they going to explain it to their fake friends?"
Maya visibly swallowed, as the others at the table stared at her. Those words didn't sound so good when they were thrown back at you, out loud, and by someone else. Did she really sound that elitist?
"They came around, though," Fitz continued. "We reached a compromise. I would consider joining the company once I retired and they wouldn't pressure my siblings to work for the company either. So far they've held up their end of the bargain and try to attend as many games during the season, as they can. My brother owns a design firm. He has no interest in working in the family business either."
Olivia looked at her mother. Why couldn't she just respect her career choice, like the Grants?
"I see," Maya responded as if she'd been hit with some sort of revelation with Fitz's words. "As parents you always want what's best for your children. Of course that doesn't necessarily mean you'll always agree with the choices they make; their friends, hobbies and tastes as youngsters, and much later their lifestyle and career choices." She sighed. "But being proud of them and loving them for who they are, not what they do, sets them up for a lifetime of confidence."
Olivia almost choked on the water she was sipping. She glanced at her brother and they both stared at their mother in disbelief. Who was this woman? She'd never heard those words uttered from Maya Pope's mouth in thirty years. She was beginning to see her in a new and brighter light. But of course that could easily change, this was her mother after all. So she just nodded her head agreeing, along with everyone else before smoothly changing the subject.
"Daddy, Fitz is considering entering a dish for Gentleman's next year."
Eli Pope smiled in surprise. "Is that right? We always hold a few spots for non-members, and we would love to have you."
Olivia caught her mother's eye and the two smiled in new understanding at one another, before rejoining the conversation going on around them.

Later…
Olivia stood in the arched entrance to her parent's dining room opposite the living room sipping on a glass of the second bottle of Bordeaux Fitz had bought. It had brought tears to her eyes at the first taste. He may not be a wine lover but his selections, paired with today's dinner, were perfect.
Her heart swelled as she watched him interacting with her family. He was a natural and fit right in. By the time dessert was served, she was certain of one thing, Fitz had managed the impossible. He had smiled and charmed her mother into submission. The same way he'd smiled and charmed her. Olivia had assisted Mrs. Pitts, the Pope's housekeeper and cook, with the dessert dishes and instead of returning to the dining room, she stood back and observed him with her family. She wasn't really worried about how he'd get along with her parents because Fitz was good with people, period.
She watched as her mother excused herself from the table to speak with Mrs. Pitts, who was preparing to leave. A few minutes later, she joined her daughter, as she listened to Eli tell Fitz and Joey one of his many stories.
"He's a lovely man, baby," Maya said as she slid an arm around Olivia's waist.
Olivia smiled. "Thanks, Mom. I think so too."
"Mmm-hmm, I can tell."
Olivia turned to look at her mother. "How so?"
Maya smiled at her baby. "Because you brought him here to meet me and your father."
Olivia nodded. "And I haven't brought a man home to meet you and Daddy since...," her voice trailed off. Saying the words, she realized the significance. "I really like him."
"He likes you too. It's in the way he looks at you."
Olivia should've known her mother would've been paying close attention to them both. Maya wanted to know everything about her children but neither was very forthcoming with much information, especially her daughter. That is why today was sort of a restart. They'd let her into their lives, and she couldn't have been happier.
"He's attentive to your every need, but not in an overpowering way, and you have respect and admiration for each other. I could hear it in his voice when he talked about how you handled the situation with his sister, the care you showed. And when you talked about the work he does for kids, through his foundation."
"I didn't want you to be impressed with the football player, Mom. I wanted you to see the Fitzgerald Grant I've gotten to know. The man he is."
"Well I am impressed with Fitzgerald, Olivia. He's a great role model for kids, unlike a lot of professional athletes. And he's a gentleman, like your father."
Olivia smiled at her mother. And Maya leaned over and kissed her cheek.
"It's good to see you trusting yourself with someone. I wondered how long it would take you. But it appears the wait was worth it"
"Fitz makes me feel things I've never felt with anyone else."
Maya bumped Olivia's shoulder with her own. "That's how it starts."
Olivia didn't have to ask her mother what she meant because she already knew. She'd known for a while now but hadn't thought she was ready to actually admit it, until a week ago.
"That man has managed to break that glass wall you'd put up around your heart, so I know he's good for you," Maya added.
Olivia turned and wrapped her arms around her mother for a tight hug. They'd never talked this way before. It was always Maya doing the talking and none of the listening. Maybe this was a turning point in their relationship. Maybe.
Maya hugged her daughter back, rubbing her back the way she used to when she was a little girl. Olivia had exposed a rare glimpse into her true emotions, which touched her mother's heart and she vowed that she wouldn't take this opportunity for granted.

"What are you two over here talking about?"
They hadn't seen Julian approach and their heads turned toward his voice.
"Your sister and I were just talking about her boyfriend."
"Really?" Julian said, surprise in his voice. Olivia never discussed anything with their mother. This was definitely a first for the two of them. And maybe a turning point, as well. At least he hoped so.
Julian hugged his mother's side.
"I am so happy for you and Josephine, son. I know for years she didn't think I liked her and that's my fault. I made her feel uncomfortable and unwelcome, and I regret that. I'm going to work on improving our relationship."
"It's important to me that you like her, Mom. I don't think I could take it if the two women I love more than anything else in the world didn't like each other."
Maya smiled. "I've known Josephine over twenty years. She's intelligent, beautiful and she loves my son, which is most important. She loves you and she makes you happy"
Olivia and Julian glanced at each other again, not believing the words coming from their mother's mouth.
Julian kissed her cheek. "Thank you, Mom. She's the best."
"I know she is if you asked her to be your wife."
"I love her."
Maya nodded. "Then tell her every day. Make her happy. Hold her when she's sad. And be your very best for her every day that you're together. That's how you love a woman, Julian."
"You've been the only woman I've ever had to know how to love, Mom. For so very long it's been only you."
"Hey!" Olivia huffed.
"Oh please, you're my sister. This is different."
"Mama's boy," Olivia mumbled.
Julian reached around their mother and lightly pulled Olivia's hair.
"Mom, tell J to stop."
Maya chuckled. She hadn't been this happy talking with her children in a very long time.
"Stop it, Julian." The three of them laughed.
"Seriously, you have a big heart, son. There's more room for you to love another woman. All I've ever wanted for the two of you is to find love and happiness." She glanced at Julian and Olivia.
"Thank you, Mom," they said in unison.
"I love you both," she said, kissing each of their cheeks.
X
A companionable silence settled over the car as Fitz maneuvered Olivia's car through the Sunday evening traffic, headed to Great Falls. She watched the passing scenery as they drove through the streets of D.C. They'd stopped by her condo so she could pick up a suit for the first day of tomorrow's trial. Usually on the eve of a trial, she wanted to be alone, but tonight was different. She wanted to be with Fitz, wherever that was.
Olivia had had more fun at her parent's dinner table today than she'd had in a very long time. Having Fitz and Joey, now Julian's fiancé, there, changed the dynamic in ways she couldn't have imagined.
After dessert, they'd all retreated to the living room where the men selected cigars from Eli's humidor and went to smoke them on the patio, and the women sat talking about weddings. Well, Maya talked about weddings while Olivia and Joey pretended to listen. Olivia looked at Joey, hoping her and Julian took her father's advice and eloped because Maya Pope was going to test the solvency of their relationship with her unwanted and unsolicited advice.
After about an hour, the foursome said their goodbyes, and Eli and Maya walked them to the door.
Julian and Joey were the first to leave, and then the elder Popes turned to Fitz and Olivia.
They both wished Olivia luck on the upcoming trial as they both took turns hugging her.
Maya hugged Olivia and then stood back and cupped her face in her hands. She paused, as if she was about to say something else, but shook her head as if deciding not to.
"How about we plan to have lunch one day next week once the trial ends?"
Olivia tried to hide her surprise. "Sounds great, Mom." She wouldn't be having lunch with her mother every week, yet, but at least Maya was trying. Change was hard, but progress couldn't be made without it.
Then she pulled Fitz in her arms for a hug.
"Thank you both for having me over," Fitz said once Maya released him. "I appreciate the invitation." He smiled at them both knowing his attendance had been a surprise.
"You're welcome anytime, son," Eli said, placing an arm around his wife. Then he turned to Olivia. "Feel free to bring this young man around again."
Olivia chuckled and hugged and kissed her father again. "Thanks, Daddy."
She took the hand Fitz extended as he led her out the door.
"Drive carefully!" Eli said, as Fitz climbed behind the wheel.
Present...
"Did you have fun today?"
Fitz glanced at her briefly. "I did. You have a great family and I enjoyed spending time with them. Thanks for inviting me. I think I was a hit with your parents," he said grinning at her.
"Ya think?" She couldn't help grinning back at him.
"Livvie, your parents are great," he said.
Olivia stared at him questioningly. "You weren't put off by my mother?"
His brow furrowed. "Why would you ask that?"
"You don't think she's a snob?"
Fitz shook his head. "No, I don't think so, Livvie. I think she's charming. Your mother is who she is, and I wouldn't want her to change and become something she's not, just to make me comfortable. I am who I am, and what you see is what you get, and so is she."
Olivia winked at him. "And I happen to like what I see."
Fitz glanced at her. "Me too."
Olivia looked at his profile as he drove them to his home. She leaned across the console and kissed him softly, with everything she felt for him. She was in love. She could admit that to herself even if she hadn't said it to anyone else.
Fitz was everything she hadn't known she needed, everything she'd had no idea was missing from her life.
"You're an amazing woman, Olivia Pope. And I'm glad you're all mine," he lifted their joined hands to his mouth and kissed her fingers.
"Well you're pretty damn special yourself, Fitzgerald Grant. And I'm glad I'm all yours, too."
