Tom and her father arrived shortly after they did, with the convenience of private air travel, although for the sake of privacy, they did not take air force one. It would have been so embarrassing to have the whole city basically shut down for the President's arrival when there were other kids who came to this college too.
It was one of the more hotly debated topics that they had discussed over the past few weeks. Secret Service hadn't exactly been keen on the president taking other private air travel. There was a good reason why air force one was used so often, safety for the president, but it was also a huge disruption in people's lives.
Streets still had to be closed because the president was coming into town, but that was something they wouldn't budge on. The cars were going to be presidential cars. It would close down roads, that was just the natural state of things, but at least it wasn't all travel and most people would still be able to get around.
"So how did the drive go?" Her father asked as he walked into the suite where Rachel was already unpacking things to live in the space.
Rachel looked up and smiled at her dad, "Fine," before going right back to work.
The president looked at Tex. "No one tried to jump us yet and princess didn't talk the whole time, so like she said, fine,"
"I'm not a princess," Rachel rebutted, pouting a little.
Tex just chuckled, "Okay, Princess,"
The president looked between Tom and Rachel and Tex, Tom just nodded. This was good. They were settling into a routine. And Rachel wasn't yelling about not needing the man again, so at least something had changed on the drive over.
"So let's make you a home here," The president said. "What can we do?" He asked.
At that point, Rachel stopped with boxes and started directing everyone, including Tex about where best to place item, who rolled his eyes, but picked up boxes just like she asked and put them in the exact place she asked, because no one was getting out of that and he knew it. He wouldn't just be a bodyguard, but he he had to be her friend too. Because she had to trust him with her life. Otherwise nothing about this was going to work.
Since the suite was just the two of them, one of the other provisions that couldn't have been budged on, and Rachel tried to get it to budge. She wanted a normal college experience. Or at least as close to one as she could get. And this was as close to normal as they could get. Her and her bodyguard. She looked at him rolling his eyes and then moving the boxes and smiled a little to herself. At least he had the good sense not to say anything about it.
After awhile, the place looked cozy. The rugs had been laid out. Tom was working on getting the TV and all the accoutrement that went with it ready, Tex was working on some more bookshelves, and her father was installing a shower organizer that seemed like it would be the easiest thing, but it was the thing she was helping with too.
"You know, I think this is going to be good for you," Her dad said.
She looked around and smiled. "Yeah, I think so too,"
"I'm happy you're happy, sweetheart," He said as he looked up from the instructions and started to put the poles together. It took awhile, nearly as long as the TV and bookshelves to set up, but in the end they figured it out.
When it went up, and the springs sprung between the ceiling and the floor, she clapped for them as she gave her dad a hug. They didn't notice Tex and Tom standing out there looking a little proud too. It was just the two of them in their moment.
The day carried on into evening as boxes of books were put up on shelves, clothes were put into closets, and pillows were put onto couches. It looked like a typical dorm room of someone who really loved the idea of going to college. But someone who also had more money than the average bear. Tex thought it was funny that he was going to live in this highly decorated feminine place, but the money was good. He was getting free college out of it. He couldn't complain.
Rachel looked out the window and recognized the orange hazy skyline and looked to Tom and her dad. "You guys should go," She said as she finished putting down the box of stuff in her hands.
"We don't have to," The president said.
Rachel nodded. "You should. You have important work to do. And I should get acquainted with my new surroundings without you," She said as she pulled him into a hug. "Don't do anything that makes mom call me about you," She whispered. He nodded as a small tear ran down his face as he hugged her tighter.
When that was done, she hugged Tom. "You stay out of trouble too,"
Tom laughed. "Oh, you know I won't." He said as he took the president and left, leaving Rachel and Tex standing in their living room together, looking at the couple go.
There had been secret servicemen far enough away as to not intrude on their private moment, but close enough that everyone wasn't going to be worried about the president being assassinated. Rachel watched all of the cars roll away, two of the very same license plate, like she had seen for several years. She sighed as she looked away from the window.
"Miss him already?" Tex asked.
Rachel shot him a look, "Not that it's any of your business, but yes," She said as she sauntered off into her sleeping space.
Tex simply shook his head. This girl was going to be a lot and they hadn't even gotten to the taking classes part of the college experience. Tex wasn't dumb, but he knew just from the way that she gave him looks that she was going to be insufferable in them. Whatever, he thought, it was a gig. A gig that should be fairly easy. After all, all he had to do was make sure that she didn't get hurt. That wouldn't be such a big ask would it?
