Chapter 14
Mike stood nervously before Jonah's desk at the Bugle, he had just handed over the photos he'd taken of the Lizard fight, omitting certain details in his explanation to Jonah of course.
"Good, good this what we need." Jonah remarked. "Now we just need a good headline to go with it."
Mike had some hopes for that, he even had a few ideas.
"Well sir, I-" He began.
He barely had time to notice Robbie's warning look before Jonah cut him off.
"Don't interrupt me, Wheeler. Ah, I've got it." He remarked before smirked. "Spider-Man rampages with beast around ESU, lab destroyed. Oh that's a good one."
Mike fought to contain his glare, it wasn't good at all, it was in fact a blatant lie.
"Sir that's not even-" He tried to interject.
But Jonah again cut him off. "Robbie, get that all set up at once, if you're quick we'll make the evening edition. Oh and Wheeler, here, for a job competently done."
Jonah passed an envelope of cash towards him and Mike regretfully took it.
There was another pause before Jonah checked another letter on his desk and smirked. He looked up at Mike who was almost at the door.
"Wheeler come here, want to earn more money, I've got some more jobs for you."
Mike turned back, reminding himself why he needed this job and returned to the desk. Jameson dropped what looked like a long winded letter in front of him.
"We finally got someone who can see Spider-Man as the charlatan he is. Quentin Beck, some movie guy, but he knows props and theatrics when he sees them." Jameson explained. "He's issued a challenge to Spider-Man and plans to expose him. Being the show off he is, Spider-Man won't refuse that and you can get pictures of it all, showing the world the truth."
Mike suppressed a sigh and accepted the job.
"What's the other?" He then asked.
"This weekend, Mayor Osborn Rally. You and every photographer I can spare." Jameson revealed. "Now, get going."
Mike turned and left the office, still with a heavy heart, that headline still infuriated him with its blatant lies, this was not the big break he'd wanted.
Shortly after exiting the offices and going into the corridor, Mike was on edge yet again, this time due to the sight of Nancy, backed up against the wall while that sleaze Holloway had her cornered. He instantly advanced, hearing what was being said as he did so.
"Get away from me."
"You need to stop this nonsense, Miss Wheeler." He drawled. "You know full well you brought that and anything else like it on yourself."
Nancy merely glared at him coldly. "I said, get away."
"You need to learn your place."
"Hey!" Mike interjected.
Nancy stared and grimaced upon seeing him while Holloway sneered.
"Don't recall inviting you to be part of this talk, boy." He remarked. "Run along."
"Yeah right, so you can harass my sister, I don't think so." Mike snapped.
"Mike." Nancy said firmly, shaking her head.
Holloway merely rolled his eyes.
"I'd watch that tone of yours, boy. It might get you in trouble some day."
With that he stalked away, muttering to himself.
"Nancy, that was-"
But she shook her head again. "Mike no, just leave it."
"But he can't just get away with that!" Mike protested. "What did he mean earlier, has he done anything else, has he-?"
"Mike, there is nothing you can do, so just leave it." She told him.
Mike looked like he wanted to complain more, but did indeed let the matter drop. If Nancy refused to talk about it, there was nothing more he could say or do to change her mind.
That did not mean he was happy about this in the slightest and kept the glare up as he stalked past, going to leave the building. Nancy sighed and looked up, only to pause worriedly as she saw Betty Brant looking at her with an unreadable expression on her face. But then Betty returned to the offices to head for her desk and Nancy sighed, before also going to leave the building.

Will rolled his eyes as he stood on the rooftop, reading yesterday's evening edition of the Bugle, especially the headline that he knew right away was J Jonah Jameson's work.
'Seriously...I need some sort of PR agent or something...poor Mike, getting his photos used for this.' He thought ruefully.
It was then he noticed another article, detailing Quentin Beck's plans to expose him as a fraud and issuing a challenge to him.
"Well, well, interesting." He muttered.
In the mood for some amusement, Will wasted no time swinging to the location given for the challenge.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
