Chapter 56

Will tried with little success to move the rubble pinning him. He was still in shock at what had occurred.

'I, how could...I had just saved Mike.' He thought in dismay. 'Then I get buried and the Goblin just takes him...'

"Will, Will talk to us." Dustin cried out over the radio.

Will groaned and then sighed. "I-I'm sorry."

"No time for that. You gotta get out of there." Max cut in.

Lucas also added. "Yeah, you need to stop him, you need to save Mike."

But Will's broken spirit seemed to have sapped his strength.

"I...I can't."

A stony silence fell after he said that.

Suzie finally broke it. "I can't believe what I'm hearing."

"What the hell do you think you're doing!?" Kali snapped. "You can't just give up!"

Will shook his head. "What have I even accomplished? Every one of these Supervillains I've put down, have just been replaced with another. I've been going at this for hours now today and I can barely-"

It was clear the Spider-Team were in shock, the utter defeat in Will's tone was impossible to miss.

He had defeated Shocker, Rhino, Mr. Negative only for Venom and the trio to rise up, now he had defeated Venom and two members of the trio, but at great cost and now Mike was in peril again. Not to mention all the turmoil Mike had gone through in his personal especially once he had learned Will was Spider-Man, especially once they had openly started their relationship. Even if the divorce between Mike's parents was for the best, the event which started had been Mike being thrown out of his home simply for being in love with Will. He hadn't said it but Will had felt guilty about that and now, with everything else added up on top of this, it was no wonder he sounded so broken. But they still needed him.

"Will please..." El tried uncertain.

Will inhaled shakily but couldn't even find it in himself to reply.

That was when he heard the sound of one of the team removing their headsets, then putting it back on. No, it was someone else taking it and putting it on.

He soon got his answer as to who.

"You cannot give up, Will, you're Spider-Man." It was Joyce. "Mike believes in you, we all believe in you. We all need you, all of New York needs you and all of us know you can do this..."

"We know it's dangerous but that's why we're here." Another familiar voice chimed in. "You're not alone, little brother."

"Mom...Jonathan" Will whispered.

Joyce continued. "It's a risk for us all, we all know that. Mike especially knows that but he's not given up on you. He never will and neither will I."

"Yeah." Dustin agreed. "We can't physically be there with you. But we'll always support you."

El then spoke again. "You have all these people Will, they won't give up on you, so don't you give up on them."

"These are the people your fighting for, and it's all worth, you have made a difference and now it's to finish this." Joyce told him firmly.

Will bit his lip and finally, when he spoke, they were all relieved to hear the old determination filling his voice again.

"No giving up, gotta rescue Mike and finish this...have a way to defeat the Green Goblin."

Finally, feeling the strength running through his body again, Will gave a cry of effort and lifted the rubble off of himself and leapt free, despite the rips and tears, including a large one across his back, he stood once more, tall and strong.

With renewed purpose Will stepped to the edge of the building, listening to his friends and family over the communications as they cheered and felt hope returning. He knew now he had to follow in the Goblin's wake, away from Upper West Side, cutting through Central Park and into Upper East Side to reach Oscorp Tower.

"Lucas, check everything you can about Oscorp Tower, particularly its automated defences." He said. "He'll likely use them against me and I want to know what I'm getting into."

"Got it." Lucas replied.

With a deep breath, thoughts of Mike filling his mind, Spider-Man leapt from the factory roof and shot out a web-line. He swung forwards and headed for his destination, determined now to finish things once and for all.
