I opened my eyes, blinking blearily, and looked around, trying to make sense of my surroundings. I blinked my eyes to try and see clearer, my brain was malfunctioning (get the pun?). It just occurred to me then that this was not my room. The unfamiliar sterilized room I was in was devoid of all color, giving off an eerie vibe that was only found in hospitals. The hospital. But why was I there?
I stiffened as I remembered the past events and bolted out, or at least tried to. A sharp pain wracked my torso, as soon as I attempted to leave my lying position into a 90-degree angle.
Now, you have to remember that I was seven years old back then. Wincing as I tried not to relive what had happened, I blinked the last of the fogginess out of my eyes, brought my knees to my chest, and leaned my head against them. I sobbed quietly, but the silent room made it echo through the cleanliness of my surroundings.
"Oh look, the Sleeping Beauty has finally awoken!" My head whipped around to face a small boy, around 10 years old, his luscious black locks arranged messily as if he just woke up (which he probably had a while ago).
"Who kissed the princess awake this time?" He said with what looked like a trademark lopsided smile. His startling sea-green eyes stared back amusingly from the next bed, the curtains ajar.
I gaped, his body was literally covered with bruises and scars. His sharp eyes scanned me, looking at my wrapped torso for a second before looking up at my friend. He said simply, "Who?".
For a second, my mind went blank, then I realized what he was talking about and averted my eyes. "My aunt. You?"
He nodded and said "My step-father."
Awkward moments passed, and we just stared at each other. 'I'm sor…'
Just then, a man with a white coat, stethoscope, and clipboard opened the door and came in. Startled, he looked up and saw the two kids awake. 'Oh! You're up! Lovely! And I see you have met each other!'
His grin curved in a way that seemed unnatural, most likely plastic surgery. It made me want to cringe in distaste.
'Your nurse will come and explain the situation and call the social services, but first, I have a few questions just to clarify certain details and your mental abilities and well-being. Please wait while we bring the expert."
His grin grew wider than humanly possible, making him look like the Cheshire cat or the Grinch.
Then he left.
