Jake yanked on the bright red onesie, buttoning up the front. He felt a little ridiculous, like a child, even, as he secured Lock's mask to his face. He was twenty-one and wearing footie pyjamas in public! At least it was Halloween. Anything was normal on Halloween.

Next to him, Spud was alarming in Barrel's costume. The oversized shirt and pants had been carefully decorated with a skeleton, but they flowed around his tall and lanky frame in an eerie way. Barrel's mask was the most unsettling of all, in Jake's opinion, and he was glad when Trixie burst into the room, Shock's blue mask hanging from her fingertips.

"Can one of you get this on me without screwing up my hair?"

Jake took up the challenge because he didn't really know if Spud could see. Once Trixie had her mask on, they crowded around the mirror for the required Instagram and Snapchat posts before they could head out for the night.

Even though they were old enough for the bar, it was going to be a shit show and all of the clubs were going to be worse. It had been a relief when Trixie had gotten an invite to a house party hosted by her first year roommate, even though Jake had had a mixed reaction. "It's, like, a Halloween masquerade so we have to wear masks," Trixie had said and Jake had promptly responded, "How will I know if the ladies are hot?" Trixie had hit him and Jake had decided to go with the flow.

When they got to the house party, Jake realized a lot of his fears were unfounded. A lot of people hadn't taken the term 'mask' as seriously as Trixie had and some of the masks were definitely painted on. Jake felt completely overdressed as he waded through the sea of lumberjacks, Kens, and sexy doctors to get to the keg.

There was a beautiful woman already standing there, in a blindingly gold dress. She turned and immediately bumped into Jake, sloshing her beer all of his hand.

"Oh, sorry," she said.

Jake was transfixed by her elaborate hair. The long blonde strands surrounded her face like sun rays. Jake looked at her face. It was half obscured by a glittering sun mask, even though her blue eyes were a little cold as she regarded him. Jake could do nothing and say nothing.

"Excuse me," she said and Jake nearly fell over himself to get out of her way.

"Pick your jaw up," Trixie ordered and she reached under Jake's mask to slam it shut.

Jake filled his red solo cup as quickly as he could, trying to find the Sun. A woman like her should be unable to disappear into the crowd but the press of bodies made it entirely possible. Jake would trawl the entire house if he had to, just to make sure that he could see her again. Jake followed a surge of people, hoping they were headed for the basement, where there was supposed to be a dance floor. Instead, Jake found himself out on the smoke deck. He turned around to go back in when he something that stopped in his tracks.

Jake saw the Moon.

It was almost certainly the same woman. She had the same blonde hair, the same blue eyes, and even the same dress, but rather than all of the golden finery, it was the colour of ink, stained with stars.

Jake picked his own jaw up this time and marched toward her. Even though she was in the smoke pit, she wasn't smoking and she was sitting alone on the deck railing, making it easy for Jake to lean up next to her.

"Hey."

She regarded him with the same expression she had earlier and then she said, "Hey."

Jake grinned, glad that his mask covered his entire face, because he was pretty sure he was blushing.

"Can I, uh, get you a drink?" Jake asked, staring at her hands, which were cloaking in glimmering silver opera gloves. Jake wanted to touch the spot where glove met skin.

"And go back inside?" the Moon rolled her eyes. Then, she smiled, though most of it was concealed by her mask. "Why don't we just share yours?"

Breathlessly, Jake handed the cup to her. She left glitter on the rim.

"Why are you out here if you don't smoke?"

"Breathing room and people watching," she said. "What about you?"

"I was looking for you," Jake confessed.

"Why?"

"I don't know. I just saw you and felt like I've been looking for you."

Her gloved hand touched his arm and she laughed. "Well, aren't you charming."

"Doing my best."

When the beer was gone, the Moon requested another. Jake was reluctant to leave her and their conversation but he also wasn't about to tell her 'no'. Jake picked up her hand and pressed it to his mask's mouth. At least, he hoped it was the mouth and he wasn't sticking her fingers in Lock's nose.

"Stay here. Wait for me. I'll be back."

"Deal."

Jake hurried back into the house but it felt lie it had gotten even fuller and hotter since he'd last been in. His frozen skin prickled as he tried to make his way to the keg, constantly being slowed. He filled two cups, worried that the Moon would be gone by the time he got back outside. Beer slopped over his hand and he looked up to see the Sun.

"We have to stop meeting like this," she said, but there was more warmth to her icy blue eyes.

"I told you to wait for me," Jake said accusingly, placing her cup in her gloved hand.

"I needed to warm up," she said slyly. "I was actually thinking about a dance."

Jake's eyes were drawn to er long legs, peeking out from her short, fluffed skirt. She would probably be a terrific dancer.

"Hell yeah," Jake said enthusiastically. Then, he paused, "I am invited, right?"

The Sun laughed. "Yes, but I've got to find the girl's room first and that you are not invited to."

"Well, I've got better first date ideas than watching you pee."

The Sun's lips twitched.

"I'll meet you downstairs," Jake said. He kissed her hand again and watched her climb the stairs before heading to the dance floor to wait.

Rose crammed into the bathroom with her identical twin, both of them careful not to disturb the hair, the makeup, or the masks that had taken them so long to make perfect.

"Where have you been all night?" Rose asked. "Did you meet someone?"

"There's this boy, dressed as Lock –"

"Oh! I've been talking to him too!"

"Well, at least you seem to sound excited about it."

"Well, he sounded very excited to talk to me."

"…Wait, when did you first meet him?"

"…Why?"

"'Cause what if he thinks we're the same person?" Rose stared at Emma dubiously. "It's happened before!"

"Not when we're dressed like this. This hair would take forever to do."

"Boys are stupid."

Rose had to nod in agreement. "Well, if he does think we're the same person, we could have a lot of fun with it."

"Trick or treat, bitch."

They snickered but only had to look into each other's eyes to know they were going to do it. It was, after all, the favourite game of twins. They hurriedly fixed their lipsticks and sorted out their gloves. Returned to their picture-perfect Halloween states, they were halfway to the dance floor when one of the spoke again.

"Hold on, do you think you're actually into him?"

"Um, why? Are you?"

The Sun appeared before Jake, made all the more theatrical by the strobe lights. Jake forgot about everything he'd been about to say to Trixie when she stretched out her hand. Jake's hand went around her waist, even though it wasn't a slow song. They pressed together. Jake leant in close to her ear.

"So, uh, can I take you on a date?"

"Me?"

The Sun's arm was carelessly wrapped around Jake's neck and he could smell her grapefruit body spray. It was like some kind of intoxicant.

"Well, who else?"

She spun dramatically and Jake was left momentarily blinded by the strobe. When he turned back around, he was facing the Moon.

"That is seriously impressive," he said. "You're going to have to tell me your secret."

"A lady never tells," she said, and then she winked at him, and Jake felt like the breath had been knocked from his chest.

"You have to tell me your name," Jake said, trying not to feel like he was begging. "When I look at you, I have to know you more. We have to go on a date. Please."

"When you look at me?" the Moon asked. "Me?"

"Yes, you! You're brilliant and witty and I meant it when I said that you were who I was looking for!" Jake grasped her hands and pulled her in close. Their masks bumped together and he resented the word 'masquerade' because he just wanted to kiss her. "My moon, it's you!"

"Or is the Sun for you?"

The Moon stepped back out of his grasp and then the Sun appeared behind her.

"There's two?"

Jake stared at them both, trying to make it make sense. Everything, except for their colours and their masks, were essentially identical. Even the way they tilted their heads and regarded him.

"Bye, Lock!" they said together, before disappearing into the crowd.

Jake ran after them but it was too late – they were both already gone.

Two days after Halloween, Jake found himself in the science building, waiting on Spud. He picked at his fingernails, thinking of the Sun and the Moon, and realizing what he had accidentally done. He looked up and all he saw was blonde hair. Then, two blonde heads, bent together. They were identical twins! And Jake knew that neither of them would know who he was without his Lock mask or costume, but he didn't care. He got up from his waiting spot and moved toward them. Their heads shot up and they regarded him carefully.

"I'm Lock," he said.

One of them tilted her head to the side. "Oh."

"Who are we?" the other one challenged.

"The Sun and the Moon."

"Who is who?" one of the twins insisted. "Because one of us liked you very much and one of us didn't and if you pick wrong, neither of them will speak to you again."

Jake took a step back, regarding them carefully. They were both dressed in skinny jeans and university sweatshirts. One had her hair in a braid, the other in a high ponytail. He looked into both of their eyes and he knew.

"You are the Sun," he said to one, and then he reached out and took the other's hands into his, "and you are my Moon."

She smiled at him and his heart melted. "My name is Rose, actually."

"And my name's Jake. So, how about that first date?"

"I can't wait."
