Sdmil10310: I whole heartedly agree! Fanfictions are amazing and so are the writers that publish them. I love reading them just as much as I love writing them. Chapter 5 - Danger

XXXXXXXX

The atmosphere in the Ministry of Magic has shifted. What was once a bustling center of wizarding government has turned somber in the wake of Julia's brutal murder. People whispering in hushed tones, mourning the loss of the beloved war hero and now Julia. Despite the commotion, Harry and Hermione are now focused on a single goal - finding out who is responsible and why.

"We have to find out who did this, Hermione," Harry urges, his eyes unwavering, as they sit in a quiet corner of the Ministry's atrium. "Ron and Julia deserve justice."

Hermione nods, her determination mirrored in her gaze. She knows she can't let their deaths remain unsolved. The memory of their lifeless bodies, with an 'R' cruelly carved into their chests, haunts her every moment. "We can't let these murders go unsolved," she agrees, "We owe it to Ron, and to Julia. We'll start here at the Ministry."

With that being said, the duo stands from their unseen corner and begin by starting with the lead Harry had mentioned previously. Kingsley is sat behind his desk as the duo approaches and knocks on the door.

"Enter," Kingsley's voice rings out, distractedly as the duo enters his office and sits down in front of his unkempt desk. Looking up, his eyes widen in recognition at seeing who is sat in front of him.

"Mr. Potter! I see that you have finally rejoined us. Where have you been all this time?" Harry smiles slightly at the Minister, Harry always liked Kingsley but he knows that right now is not the best time to get into back stories.

"It's good to see you, Mr. Kingsley. I would love to sit down with you some time and tell you about where I went when I left. However, I'm afraid that we don't have time for that. We are actually here to see if you have any leads on what might have happened to Ron, and now Julia?" Kingsley eyes the pair for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh.

"I'm sorry, Harry, Hermione. The only thing that we have been able to dig up so far on the murders is that Astoria Greengrass was seen to be with Ron the night that he was murdered." Harry and Hermione exchange quick disappointed glances before Harry turns back to the Minister.

"Thank you, this will help." The pair stand front their seats and head towards the door to his office before Harry turns back, locking eyes with Kingsley.

"I will keep you informed on what we find out, if anything." After receiving a nod from the older man, the duo turns and heads out of his office. The decide to leave Astoria for the moment and try to see if they can get any leads on Julia first, since her murder happened right here in the Ministry. They start by interviewing Ministry workers who had known Julia or had worked alongside her. As they venture into various departments, some of the somber workers share anecdotes about Julia's kindness and wit, while others could only offer distant glimpses of the woman she had been. After many interviews, and none yielding what the pair had hoped for, Hermione pauses, a little defeated and leans against the wall. Harry, who had been walking ahead of her, notices that the second set of footsteps he had been unknowingly been walking in sync with, are now gone. Pausing, he turns to see the auburn haired witch leaned against the wall with a defeated look on her face, her head tilted down as her hair falls around her like a curtain.

"Hermione?" His voice is careful as he steps back over to her, his eyes soft in sympathy as he understands what she must be feeling right now. At the sound of his voice, Hermione can't help but look up, the softness in his voice causing her to meet his eyes.

"I'm sorry, Harry, it's just really rough, I just don't know what to do, I'm scared. That is two brutal murders back to back and I don't know who would have wanted to hurt Julia, she was always so sweet and to kill her in such a brutal way? It's unspeakable." Her voice ends in a slightly terrified, disgusted tone as tears well up in her eyes. Harry, who has been patiently listening to her, steps closer as he lays one hand on her shoulder and uses his other to place two fingers under her chin and lift her head back up once more.

"We will find who did this to Ron and Julia, we just need to stay strong. Something will break and we will get a lead that will bring us one step closer to finding them, okay?" Hermione can't help but admire Harry for his strength. Here she is, losing face while he is staying cool, at least on the outside, and determined. Hermione steels her eyes and nods with new determination burning in her eyes.

"You're right, Harry, let's continue with the lead we got from Kingsley." With her words, the pair set off in search for the distasteful witch's office.

Astoria Greengrass, in particular, Hermione couldn't stand, but as she was known to have been with Ron the night of his murder, it's a lead the pair can't afford to pass up. As they entered her office, Hermione couldn't help but notice the disheveled state of Astoria's desk - as if someone had rifled through her papers. As the duo enters, Astoria looks up from a paper she was writing on and hides a scowl at the sight of the witch standing next to Harry.

"How can I help the two of you?" Her voice is icy as her eyes flick between the pair.

"Miss Greengrass, I'm sure you understand how important it is to find out what happened to Ron and Julia," Hermione said, her tone stony but urgent. She does not like this witch in front of her, considering, but knowing that answers are needed, she does her best to keep the resentment out of her voice as she speaks. "We were told, you were with Ron that night. Can you tell us anything that might be helpful?"

Astoria hesitated, her eyes darting around nervously. Her fingers trembled as she twisted a strand of her blonde hair. "I wish I could, Hermione, but it's all a blur," she replied, her voice now a mask of fake shakiness. "We were at the Leaky Cauldron, and then I remember leaving, but after that..."

Harry leaned in, a concerned look in his eyes. "Are you saying you have no memory of what happened afterward?"

Astoria nodded, tears starting to glisten in her eyes. "It's like a nightmare I can't remember," she confessed. "I don't even know how I got back to my flat."

Hermione's intuition tingled. There was something off about Astoria's story, and her disheveled desk only added to her suspicions. "Astoria, there must be something you remember, no matter how insignificant it may seem."

Astoria lowered her gaze. "Well, just before I left the pub, I remember someone approaching us. A hooded figure. I thought they were just a stranger. But I can't remember anything else."

Harry exchanged a meaningful glance with Hermione. There was something about Astoria's story that didn't quite add up. "Astoria, we'll need to follow up on this," he said. "It might be a clue. Do you have any idea who might want to harm Ron or who would gain anything from it?"

Astoria shook her head, her lips trembling in an attempt to hide the smirk that is threatening to spread across her face. "I don't know, but Ron didn't have any known enemies. He was a good person." Harry and Hermione share another look, knowing now that something is going on. Ron, a good person? He was in their younger years but now? The duo stand as Harry addresses Astoria once more.

"Thank you, Miss Greengrass. If we have anymore questions, we know where to find you. Good day."

As they leave Astoria's office, Harry couldn't shake the feeling that she was hiding something. Her story feels incomplete, and the shadow of doubt hung over her involvement in that fateful night.

The days passed in a blur as Harry and Hermione dig deeper into the investigation. They search for clues, question more Ministry workers, and comb through any lead, no matter how small. Yet, the 'R' carved into the victims' chests remain an enigma.

Their quest turns out to be relentless, but it is not without strange occurrences. One evening, as Hermione sits at her cluttered desk in her dimly lit office, she suddenly notices a note left there that wasn't there before. The words are chilling and ominous, hinting at an unseen danger closing in.

The past now haunts you. The crimes that were committed will come to light but at what cost will it cause? Your memories that are locked away are the key. Until then, those closest to you will continue to suffer.

Hermione's heart raced as she reads the words. She couldn't help but feel that she and Harry are being watched. They are slowly getting closer to the truth, and someone wants them to find it but at a cost.

And the message is clear: Hermione's loved ones are the next targets.

The days turn into weeks, with random notes appearing in various places, each hinting at mysterious disappearances. The notes hold subtle clues, the signs of a sinister plan.

On one such evening, as they returned to Grimmauld Place, the unsettling sense of danger is overwhelming. The next day, Hermione opens the door to her cluttered office, her gaze falling on her unkempt desk to find Luna's beloved necklace, left abandoned on her desk. The charm glints dully in the subdued light. It is a sign of what was to come, and the feeling of dread is inescapable. Harry, who is standing behind her in the doorway, lays a calming hand on her now shaking shoulders.

"We have to be careful, Hermione," Harry whispers, scanning the room for any sign of intrusion. His wand is already in his hand, ready for whatever lay ahead. However, as the duo stands in the doorway, nothing else out of place jumps out at them. They step further into the office and Hermione carefully picks up Luna's necklace.

The message is clear. The danger is closing in, and they have no choice but to confront it head-on.

The path to justice has now become an intricate web, with each step leading them further into the heart of darkness.
