It was a perfectly normal day at Seiran Girls School. In the cafeteria, Kyoko, Akemi and some of their other friends were sitting at a table, talking and laughing happily. None of them noticed a small, subdued figure walking towards their table until she was right in front of them.
"Um, excuse me" she said.
Kyoko noticed her and held up a hand. At once the others fell silent. "Hello Yumi-san" she said.
"Hello Hayakawa-san, everyone" Yumi replied. "Um, I'm sorry to bother you Hayakawa-san, but I have a problem."
"It's no bother. Sit down and tell us all about it."
She listened as Yumi told her how she had gone to an abandoned warehouse to investigate ghost sightings. While there she had seen a group of sinister-looking figures in red robes.
"Whoever those guys were I'm sure they're up to something bad, but nobody will believe me unless I get proof."
Kyoko nodded. "I'll come with you."
"And me," said Akemi.
Kyoko shook her head. "No Akemi-san. There's less chance we'll be seen if there's just two of us."
Yumi smiled. "Thank you, Hayakawa-san."
After school they met up outside the front gates.
"Are you ready?" Kyoko asked.
"I'm ready" Yumi replied.
They set off for the warehouse. On their way there, they came across Kyoko's friend, Yamana Michiru standing behind a blanket where her jewelry designs were displayed.
"Hello Hayakawa-san" she said brightly as she saw them.
"Hi Yamana-san" Kyoko replied. "Are those new designs? They look amazing."
"Thanks, and yes they are."
"Mind if I take a closer look?"
"Not at all. Help yourself."
She studied the jewelry for a few moments and finally chose a silver cross necklace. Yamana smiled as she handed it over.
"Thank you, Hayakawa-san. Come back soon."
"I will" Kyoko replied.
She and Yumi headed to the industrial district. By the time they arrived the sun had set. Yumi looked around anxiously.
"This place gives me a bad feeling Hayakawa-san."
"Me too" Kyoko agreed. "Let's be careful."
As they approached the derelict old building Yumi noticed something and pointed. "Look Hayakawa-san, there's light coming from there."
They crept warily to a boarded-up window and peered inside. In the middle of the chamber, surrounded by rows of crates, multiple braziers and torches had been set up, the flames casting flickering shadows. There were also banners depicting abstract hexagram symbols.
Over two dozen figures in red robes were gathered around an altar on which a ganguro girl was bound and gagged. Her eyes wide with fear, she strained futilely while the robed figures chanted something in low voices. As they watched in dismay, a portal of swirling red light opened in front of the altar and something stepped through. Kyoko managed to cover Yumi's mouth just in time to keep her from screaming.
The creature had grey-brown fur, glowing yellow eyes, a flat apish nose, large pointed ears and two horns on top of its head. On its back was a pair of dragon-like wings and its mouth was filled with large pointed teeth. Its feet were hooves and its hands had sharp claws. A lion's tail swished back and forth behind it.
One of the cultists stepped forwards and bowed. "Master, we offer you this sacrifice" he said, gesturing to the girl on the altar. She uttered a muffled scream and struggled frantically.
The creature growled softly and nodded in seeming approval. Its lips curled back in a twisted parody of a smile.
"Yumi-san, go and get help" said Kyoko firmly.
"Yes Hayakawa-san."
She hurried away as Kyoko kicked the board covering the window, breaking it into pieces. She climbed through the window and clambered up onto the row of crates. As the Demon loomed over the girl, Kyoko ran across the row of crates and jumped into the air. She landed a flying front kick to the jaw that staggered it.
"Who dares?" the head cultist exclaimed.
"I do" she said firmly. "I'm Hayakawa Kyoko and I won't let you hurt innocent people."
The cultists started to move forwards but the Demon raised a hand and they stopped. It looked at her and growled again.
The Demon charged and slashed at her with its claws. Kyoko dodged each attack. Ducked under a wide swipe and landed three punches to its chest but it didn't even flinch. It raised both fists and brought them down in a pair of hammer blows that she jumped back just in time to avoid. It followed with another series of slashes but she managed to deflect them as she backed away.
As they passed a row of crates Kyoko jumped up onto one and threw a roundhouse kick to the Demon's head that sent it reeling back. She tried to press the attack, but it recovered almost instantly and its hand shot out, closing around her throat. She struggled as it lifted her into the air one-handed.
"Our master will devour your soul" one of the cultists laughed.
Can't break its grip. There must be a way to… Wait, that's it!
Kyoko reached up and touched the silver cross necklace she'd bought from Yamana. As her vision began to dim, she held the holy symbol to the Demon's hand. At once there was a loud hissing sound and it howled in pain. It dropped her and cradled its wounded hand while she rubbed her throat.
The Demon glared at her and roared in rage. As it did so Kyoko quickly took the silver cross from around her neck and threw it into the Demon's open mouth. Before it could react, she punched it in the throat and it swallowed the cross.
Its eyes bulged and it began to tremble uncontrollably as its body burst into flame. With a final roar it exploded, sending fiery debris in all directions. Several of the nearby crates caught fire. The cultists screamed and began to flee in panic.
Kyoko picked up her necklace, surprised to find that it was cool to touch, and ran over to the would-be sacrifice. She untied the terrified girl and helped her up.
"Thank you" the girl sobbed.
"Come on we have to get out of here."
They ran outside as the flames began to spread. In the distance sirens could be heard. Kyoko glanced around to check that there were no cultists lurking around and began to comfort the other girl. A little while later Yumi came running up.
"Hayaawa-san, are you okay?"
"I'm fine Yumi-san. I'll tell you all about it in a moment."
The cultists were soon rounded up and the girl was brought to a hospital. Kyoko was relieved to learn that she was all right.
The next day Kyoko and Yumi were in the cafeteria discussing last night's events with Akemi and the others.
"Amazing. If anyone had told me this other than you Hayakawa-san I'd have thought they were crazy," said Akemi.
"I know what you mean" Kyoko agreed. "I was there and I can barely believe it myself."
"Hayakawa-san was incredible" said Yumi. "She went right in and saved that girl."
"That's why she's the boss of our school" Akemi agreed. She held up a juice carton. "To Hayakawa-san."
The others also raised their drinks. "To Hayakawa-san" they repeated as they all tapped cartons together.
Kyoko laughed. "Thanks everyone."
Author's Note: Yamana Michiru is from Hareluya II Boy. She and Kyoko met in my crossover story Ore-sama and the Ninja Warrior(s).
The Demon's appearance is based on the monster from Night of the Demon (Curse of the Demon in the United States).
