A few centuries later, Rattengott had become more powerful. While he still watched over the rats, he began experimenting with his music and instruments. He learned his powers grew stronger every time he played music. He can control the weather, create illusions, summon spells, stop time and even change the locations/environment around him. But most of all, he can hypnotize and mind-control people of any species at will.
One day, Rats came to him and asked for help. The mayor of the village they live in is hiring a ratcatcher to kill the rats. Rattengott was not happy about his rats being hunted so he agreed to help them and they came up with a plan.
Disguising himself as a ratcatcher, he arrived in the village with his favourite instrument and said to the mayor that he can get rid of the rats. He promised the mayor a solution to their problem with the rats. The mayor, in turn, promised to pay him 1,000 coins for the removal of the rats. Rattengott instructed the humans to go hide in their homes while he did his job.
Rattengott plays with his instrument and the rats follow him to the river where he has a boat for them. He then creates an illusion of the rats jumping and drowning in the river to fool the humans. While the oblivious villagers are busily distracted watching the illusion, the real rats sneakily jump into the boat.
Despite Rattengott's success in fooling villagers, the mayor became suspicious and distrustful of his magic and suspected he was up to no good. When Rattengott returned, the mayor refused to pay him the full sum and instead paid him 50 coins. Rattengott demanded why and the mayor coldly responded by confronting and blaming him for bringing the rats himself in an extortion attempt. The wary villagers joined the mayor by taunting and demanding Rattengott to get out of their town and never came back for conning them in the first place.
Rattengott was not happy that the mayor had broken his promise but he had no interest in money so he left the village in a huff. But as he left, he saw many unhappy children that he walked past. Some were at home doing nothing but chores and hard labour while being punished harshly by their guardians over the smallest mistakes, some were homeless orphans trying to survive in the streets and some were in the cold orphanage where they were kept like prisoners. He couldn't help but remind him of the rats being mistreated by the humans.
He would have given up his hope for humanity if it weren't for an old woman running up to him with three children following her. From what he learns from her, The old woman is the caretaker of the three orphans, two boys and one girl, who are all disabled. The oldest is deaf, the middle is blind and the youngest has a lame leg. The old woman and the disabled children are the only ones who are grateful for his help and she tries to pay Rattengott what little she can despite being poor. Rattengott couldn't help but feel touched by her kindness but he told her she did not need to pay him because he had bigger plans in his mind…
The next day, The adults went to Church to pray. Rattengott returns from the shadows and plays his instrument. The magic began to flow and the adults went frozen as if time had stopped. One by one, he hypnotized the village's children. One hundred and thirty children danced and followed him out of town and into a cave. The only ones who are immune to his music are the disabled children who instead froze like the adults and had to watch the children and Rattengott leaving town. When Rattengott and the children are gone, the music stops and the adults break free from the spell. The disabled children ran to the villagers and informed them of what had happened when they came out from the church.
Meanwhile, Rattengott walked out of the cave with the children still following him. He led the children to the top of the Hill, where he took them to different towns and villages.
After leaving them there in their new homes, he wiped their memories about their old lives and they had forgotten about the strange ratcatcher in colourful clothes who played enchanting music.
