Raphael and Michelangelo arrived to the lair in time to stabilize Leonardo's secondary mutation. It worked!
Or so they all thought.
Less than a week Leonardo once again complained that he didn't feel so good. Once again he mutated into the monster that he was not too long ago. Leonardo had all but destroyed the sewers before Donatello was finally able to use tranquilizers on him.
Trying everything that he could Donatello saddly admitted that there was one last thing that could be done.
"Let me..." Raphael said not sure how to finish that sentence. There was no way Donatello or Michelangelo could do what needed to be be done. It would be the end of them.
"I can handle the guilt," he whispered. Raphael waited for the rest to leave. The red masked tury took a minute to say goodbye.
"I love you Leo," he said using the nickname for the first time since Leonardo became the leader. "Please forgive me," Raphael begged. with that he positioned a sai above his leader's chest, closed his eyes and plunged his own weapon into the monster's chest.
Leonardo remained in his secondary mutation, but Raphael could only see his brother and fearless leader whose life he just ended.
"I'm sorry Leo, " he repeated over and over.
Raphael jolt in bed to find Splinter and he three brothers.
"Dude, what are you sorry for?" Michelangelo asked.
"Bad dream. I'm fine," was all Raphael to answer.
"Please don't tell me it's - " Leonardo began but Raphael cut him off with a nod.
The fearless leader knew that his sai wielding brother didn't put much stock into dreams. Leonardo also knew this wasn't the first night Raphael had the same dream.
Leonardo decided to address the entire green machine.
"If anything situation that involves having to stop me, please do whatever needs to be done to protect the city," he said.
Raphael nodded in agreement. "The same goes for me," he added.
