The sun was shining brightly when Hiccup stepped out from his tent. The young man yawned and stretched his limbs before opening his eyes and talking in the scenery of his surroundings. His camp was situated beside a small lake in a clearing, deep inside the forest.
The forest of Raven's point is a rather popular spot for many people. The dark lush green forest is a place visited by many nature lovers, people looking for a vacation and a common attraction point for tourists.
Hiccup lit up his small kerosene stove and set up his cooking stand and put a pot on top of it and filled it with water from his flask. While the water heated up, Hiccup walked over to his tent and pulled out a towel from his rucksack and went over to the edge of the lake and splashed some water on his face. Once freshened up, he stood up while rubbing his eyes and went back to the tent while wiping his face.
Hiccup checked on the water, and as it boiled up, he added some ground coffee to it. Once the coffee was prepared he transferred the dark liquid to a cup and added some sugar to it, stirring the liquid gently with a spoon as he sat down and glanced at the surroundings around him.
He took in a deep breath as he enjoyed the pleasant atmosphere around him. He brought his cup up and blew on it a couple times to help cool down the coffee and was about to take a sip when suddenly his phone rang.
Hiccup got up from his seat and put down the cup on it before going over to his tent and retrieving his phone.
"Hello?" Hiccup asked as he answered the phone call.
"Hey Hicc, it's me, Toothless." The person on the other end of the call answered.
"Oh, Toothless! What's up?" Hiccup exclaimed.
Tim 'Toothless' Fury, his best friend and brother from a different mother.
"Well, nothing much for now. How's your vacation going?"
"It's going fine. Enjoying the scenery and stuff." Hiccup laughed, going back to his previous spot and picking up his cup.
"Oh, well, good for you. You intend on coming back to the civilized world now?"
"Yeah, I'll be leaving after a while. I'll be back by evening."
"Well, you better be. Your parents are worrying about you, and your girlfriend is nagging me about you."
Hiccup chuckled. "Oh, you know how they are. Don't worry Toothless I'll be back by this evening."
"Okay. And don't forget to take your medications, alright? Talk to you later." And with that, the call ended. Hiccup sighed and rolled his eyes before taking a sip of his coffee.
For God's sake, he was twenty-five. He wasn't a kid anymore, and is more than capable of taking care of himself. He gets it that they are concerned over him ever since he had schizophrenia at the age of fifteen. But that was over a decade ago. There were no more symptoms anymore. And he regularly takes his medications. Well, he wouldn't deny that he doesn't feel like taking the pills sometimes, since he was definitely cured now.
Hiccup put his phone down and went over to the lake and walked along its edge as he enjoyed his morning coffee. Suddenly an irre feeling hit his mind. He felt as if he was being watched.
Hiccup looked at his right, towards the line of trees on the other side of the lake. The irre feeling of being watched was still lingering in his mind as a small gush of wind blew around followed by the sound of dry leaves rustling around. But after looking around for a few seconds and not finding anything, Hiccup dismissed his thoughts and went back to his tent.
Hiccup prepared himself some breakfast with whatever food he was left with and ate it, then cleaned up the plates. After fooling around for a few hours, Hiccup started to pack up. He disassembled his tent and folded it up, then went over to the cooking equipment and gathered them up. Once packing was done, Hiccup cleaned up his camp site.
He glanced up at the sky, shielding his eyes with his hand as the sun rays hit his eyes. He then pulled out his phone and checked the time. It was around noon. If he leaves now, he'd certainly be back in town by the time it will be evening.
Hiccup put his phone back and took out his bottle of medications. Hiccup was about to take a pill, when he suddenly stopped.
"Mah, I really don't feel like taking one. Besides, what's the point? I'm fine now." Hiccup mumbled to himself. It wasn't like that anything had happened to him when he didn't take the pills during his vacation.
So, he put away the medications in his pocket and hung the backpack on his shoulders and activated the GPS in his phone and began his trek.
Hiccup walked through the forest with the GPS guiding him where to go. But even after walking for almost a few hours, he wasn't at his destination. Even though he was deep inside the forest it wouldn't take this long to get out. Normally it would take no longer than a couple hours to reach the edge of the forest. Three at most, depending on what obstacles one may face during their journey.
After some more time of trying to find his way, Hiccup finally accepted the fact that he was lost.
"Damn it." Hiccup mumbled under his breath. Seeing his current situation, he did what any sensible person should do. He took out his phone and dialed the emergency number. He had to wait for some time before his call was picked up.
"Hello, this is 112. Please state your emergency." a feminine voice answered from the other side.
"Uh, hello. I'm Hayden Haddock. I got lost in the forest of Raven's point while returning from my camping trip. It would be really nice if I could get some assistance on getting out of here." Hiccup said.
"Okay, What is your position sir?"
"To be honest, I don't know. I've been walking around for a few hours now and I can't seem to find any noticeable landmarks."
"Okay, sir. I need you to remain wherever you are and do not leave your position unless it is really necessary. We're dispatching some officers to…." The voice of the operator died down as static noises began coming out.
"Hello. Hello. Can you hear me? Hello!" Hiccup exclaimed. But then the realization had dawned upon him that the call may have disconnected. Hiccup checked his phone and his suspicions were confirmed.
"Damn it!" Hiccup cursed. He tried to use the Internet, but his efforts were of no avail. Without the Internet working and no signal reaching, his phone was practically useless.
There was always the risk of getting no signal once inside the forest. In a clearing, such as the lake area Hiccup was camping at, not so much. Hiccup stood there, feeling rather helpless. He has trekked through this forest so many times, he could navigate through it like the back of his hand, but now here he is, gotten lost while getting out of the forest.
Hiccup stood there for a while, not really knowing what to do except to wait for any help the police may have sent for him.
Suddenly, a gust of wind blew. Hiccup could feel the hair on the back of his neck bristle. Just then he heard a quiet rustling in the trees behind him, and then footsteps even. Hiccup looked around cautiously, suppressing the slight tingle of fear in his mind, his eyes focused on the darkness hidden behind the large trees around him.
"It's okay, it's okay. It's all just in my mind." He muttered to himself, trying to keep himself calm.
Suddenly, he saw a glimpse of something from the corner of his eye. Hiccup quickly looked towards the direction, but saw nothing. His head turned towards another direction as he felt like something just moved there.
But then he heard the same crackling behind him. Hiccup turned and stared into the darkness, trying to see whatever was hiding behind it. Just then, he saw it. A dark silhouette of a large twisted and deformed body. It was gigantic, with its front legs/arms looking like they were made of twisted mass of flesh, as its deformed indescribable face baring its teeth at him.
Hiccup just gaped in horror. His forest green eyes wide with fear. The auburn haired man was frozen in fear. Hiccup took a few steps back, almost tripping on his own foot in the process.
The monster growled, taking a step towards him.
Seeing this, Hiccup sprang into action. The auburn haired man hastily climbed up on his feet and turned around and ran. Hiccup ran as fast as his legs would carry him, zig zagging among the trees to lose the monster that was chasing him.
Hiccup could hear its heavy footsteps behind him. He ran and ran, never once stopping. He didn't even dare to look back, too afraid of what he might see if he did. At one point Hiccup saw a fallen tree with a little gap between its trunk and the ground. The gap was barely big enough that he could crawl in there, and that's what he did. He quickly took shelter there.
Once inside his shelter, Hiccup took a peek outside. During his escape, he didn't notice that the night had already fallen. The night sky was clear and the pale moon shone like a silver plate in the night sky. Even with the near cloudless sky, there were very few stars stretching across the vast sky. The occasional rustling of leaves and the sounds of his own labored breaths were the only sounds he could hear.
Dark tree trunks, overhanging branches and vines, clumps of bushes, were filling his view. The bright light of the moon shone through the lattice of leaves, illuminating the dense forest. A thin blanket of fog was in the air, obscuring Hiccup's view of his surroundings. The tall shadowed pines stretching up like arrows into the sky.
Hiccup gulped. The dryness in his throat was getting uncomfortable. Despite the cold atmosphere of the night, he was sweating. He frantically looked around, his eyes searching for any dangers.
"It's just in my mind, it's just in my mind, it's just in my mind…" Hiccup kept muttering to himself, trying to calm himself down.
He stayed there for a while. And when he did come out, he once again carefully looked around for any dangers. There wasn't anything around him that compromised his safety. No sign of the monster he had been running from either. For a moment Hiccup thought if there really was a monster or was it just some hallucination?
"I should really stop watching so many horror movies these days." Hiccup said to himself, trying to keep his nerves calm.
He decided it would be better if he took a pill. If nothing else, then at least it will help him get calm. But then found out that he had lost his medications. Probably dropped them somewhere during the run.
Cursing his luck, Hiccup walked away from his hiding spot and tried to find his way out of the forest. But suddenly, he caught some movement out of the corner of his eye. He looked at the general direction, where he thought something was moving. Suddenly he heard twigs snapping behind him. Hiccup turned around and he felt a chill go down his spine as he found the monster standing behind him.
As the monster attempted to capture Hiccup again, he ran. Hiccup ran towards the general direction, where he knew he'd find a road. He dashed through the forest, running in between the trees in an attempt to shake off his pursuer.
He didn't know how long he was running, but eventually he found himself in a clearing. Ahead of him, he could see an old farmhouse. He has heard that there were a few farmhouses scattered around in this area, but haven't really come across one before until today.
Hiccup ran to the door and started banging his fist against it. "Help! Help me!" He screamed, frantically looking behind him to see if the monster was still chasing him.
Suddenly the door flung open and an elderly looking man was on the other side. "Who is it!?" the elderly man yelled, as he opened the door.
"Please, please help me! That thing is chasing me!" Hiccup begged.
"Wha-what?" The elderly man said before gripping Hiccup's shoulders as he saw how the young man was shaking. "Hey, hey. Gather yarself, son." he proclaimed, trying to calm down Hiccup.
"Carl, what's going on?" an elderly woman, his wife, appeared in the doorway.
"Nothing Margret, it appears this young man was spooked by something in the forest." Carl replied to his wife.
"Oh goodness! Is he okay?"
"The lad seems fine, just a little shaken up, that's all."
"Bring him in Carl, he looks quite troubled by whatever he has seen."
"Aigh. Ya heard the lady, son. Come on, come in. Let's get ya settled." The elderly man, Carl, said as he guided Hiccup inside the house, closing the door behind them after glancing out the open area outside his house.
They led Hiccup inside, setting him down on a chair in the living room.
"Seat here, I'll bring you something to calm your nerves." Margaret said, before leaving the room.
Carl sat down on a chair opposite to him. "So, lad, what in the helheim were ya doing in the forest at such hours." He questioned.
"I-I was on a va-vacation. I was…. I was supposed to return home by this evening, but-but I got lost in the forest…. and-and this thing started chasing me." Hiccup answered, still shaken up by the encounter.
"Hmmm, where's yar bag?"
"My bag!?" Hiccup patted his shoulder, trying to feel the strap of his bag, but it wasn't there. Only now he had noticed the missing presence of his bag.
"M-must have lost it while running in the jungle." He said.
The elderly man nodded. Just then, Margaret entered the room carrying a cup full of some steaming hot liquid.
"Here, have some warm milk." She said, giving him the cup,"It will help your nerves."
Hiccup took the cup, thanking her graciously. He went for a sip, but immediately recoiled as the hot liquid burnt his lips. The elderly man chuckled at that. Hiccup smiled sheepishly
"Why don't ya go to the bathroom and wash off all that dirt and grime off yar face? I'll call the cops and inform them about yar situation meanwhile." He said.
"S-sure," Hiccup replied, putting the cup down on a nearby table.
Margaret guided Hiccup to the bathroom, which was near the kitchen. Hiccup went inside the bathroom and opened the faucet. He collected the water in his palms and splashed it on his face. The cold water running down his face felt soothing after the haste he had gone through in the forest.
Hiccup splashed some more water on his face before finally closing the faucet as he wiped some of the excess water of his face with his hand. Letting out a sigh, he glances at the mirror and immediately recoils back in shock and horror.
In the mirror, it wasn't his reflection. The deformed indescribable face of the monster was the reflection that stared back at him. Hiccup suddenly felt dizzy, his vision going dark as he placed his hand against the wall to keep himself from falling. The dizziness was over moments later and when he looked back at the mirror, the monster was gone, replaced by his own reflection.
Hiccup was very startled by this. He exited the bathroom and stumbled into the kitchen, his mind still lingering onto the events that transpired in the bathroom.
"You okay, lad?" Margaret asked.
Hiccup looked up at the elderly woman who was doing something in the kitchen. All of a sudden, the friendly smile on her face started to look weird, as if something was out of place.
"Yea-yeah. I'm, I'm fine." Hiccup quickly replied.
Margaret hummed before focusing back on her work. "I don't intend to pry,... But what did you see in the forest that startled you so much?"
Hiccup braced himself against the counter. "I,... I can't explain the whole thing properly myself either. One moment, I was making my way through the forest. They other, I was being chased by…. By this, this thing."
"Sounds terrifying." Margaret commented.
"It was."
Just then, Carl entered the kitchen. "Ah, there ya are lad. I tried to call the cops, but the phone doesn't seem to be working. That's one problem of living so far from the city." The elderly man said,"So, how about this, ya stay in our guest room tonight and tomorrow morning I will drop ya off in the city. How does that sound?"
"That would be great!" Hiccup exclaimed in surprise and joy.
The elderly man just chuckled at his reaction. There was a glint of something in his eyes that Hiccup noticed, causing his smile to drop. A feeling of unease was starting to grow in the back of his mind.
"Well then Carl, take that young man to the guest room. I'll prepare something for him." Margaret suddenly said, cutting off Hiccup's thoughts.
"Sure Marg." Carl turned towards Hiccup,"Follow me, son."
Hiccup followed after Carl as he led him upstairs. They had just gotten upstairs, when suddenly the lights went out.
"Damn it!" Carl cursed,"These power outs have been happening since last month. We sent a complaint regarding these, requesting the authorities to fix it up, but they haven't gotten around to doing it yet." He then turned to Hiccup,"Wait a minute lad, let me bring something."
Hiccup stood there as Carl disappeared in the darkness. A few minutes later, the elderly man returned with a hurricane lantern. "Let's go." Carl said as he led Hiccup to a new room. It was a relatively small room with a bed, a cupboard on another side of the room and a small table covered with a tablecloth beside the bed. A carpet was laid down on the floor.
Carl placed the lamp on the table as Hiccup sat down on the bed. "Ya stay here, lad. I'll go down now. Margaret will get you something to eat later." Carl said.
"Allright. Thanks again, mister." Hiccup said.
Carl just smiled and left. Hiccup couldn't help but frown as the elderly man left. Something about that smile just spiked up his unease. Hiccup sat on the mattress of the bed, unsure of what to do. His bag was lost in the forest, so was his phone, which he might have dropped during the running. He still couldn't forget about that encounter.
Suddenly, Hiccup saw something moving in his peripheral vision. He glanced up, and saw a dark spot on the mattress. The spot was almost entirely dark, as if someone had cut off a piece of darkness and placed it on the mattress. Hiccup got curious, and he leaned forward, his left hand stretched forward to touch it. But the moment he touched the mass of darkness, it suddenly violently "splashed" out. Hiccup immediately retracted back his hand, but the patch of darkness didn't stop. It spread out, slowly covering more and more of the bed.
Hiccup, now frightened, crawled back as the darkness seemed to come at him. It moved like a gooey creature with multiple limbs was dragging itself towards him. With nowhere else to go, Hiccup fell off from the bed. On his spot on the floor, Hiccup watched with wide eyes as something dark started to form out of the darkness.
"Are you all right!?"
Hiccup snapped his head towards Margaret, who standing on the doorway, holding a wooden tray in her hand. Hiccup glanced back at the bed, but found it empty with no strange patch of darkness in sight. Bewildered, he got back on his feet and looked at the bed again. No, there was nothing wrong with the bed. It was completely normal.
"Yeah, yeah. I I'm fine. Just, fell off." Hiccup replied to the old woman.
He couldn't really explain what just happened, and there was no evidence of it happening, so he felt better not to talk about it.
"Okay…" Margaret said as she entered the room and got to the other side of the bed, and placed down the tray. On top of it, a plat filled with some food, a fork and a knife along with a lit candle.
"You sure you're okay?" Margaret asked once more.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm extra sure, ma'am." Hiccup replied.
"Oh, alright. I brought you a little something to eat. It's not much, but hopefully it will do for now."
"Oh, why thank you ma'am. This is really kind of you." Hiccup said with gratefulness, as he sat down on the bed and proceeded to eat the food.
He has taken a bite when he noticed something. Something crawled out of his food. Hiccup stared curiously at the thing. It looked like a weird bug. All of a sudden it shot up and flew straight towards him. Hiccup recoiled back in shock dropping his utensils.
Recovering from the shock, he look up at Margaret, and a chill ran down his spine at what he saw. Margaret's eyes were completely black, with a look of hostility on her face. Her mouth opened, and an inhumane scream was heard. The woman crawled up on bed, trying to get to Hiccup.
Hiccup immediately crawled back, trying to get out of her reach. The elderly woman suddenly picked up the knife he had dropped, and screamed once more. Hiccup let out a frightened scream as he looked around for something to defend himself with. His eyes fell on the lantern kept on the table beside the bed.
With the desperation to protect himself, Hiccup quickly lepf off the bed and grabbed the lantern and swung the lantern at Margaret, hitting her in the head as the lantern shattered on impact. The elderly woman crumbled on the bed and the metal frame of the lantern dropped on the floor, its flame still burning. The tossle had flipped the tray and it's contents were now spilled over the bed.
Hiccup quickly rushed out of the room, and when he exited the room, he saw Carl on the other side of the hallway of the upper floor. Hiccup quickly turned around and ran down the stairs, b
UT before he could have descended completely, Carl suddenly lunged at him, throwing them both of the stairs as they both dropped on the floor.
Hiccup glanced at Carl and was frightened to see the elderly man's eyes were also completely black. The elderly man let out a inhuman screech. Hiccup tried to crawl away and the elderly man grabbed his foot. Hiccup kicked his free foot in an attempt to free himself, hitting the elderly man in the face, forcing him to let go of Hiccup.
Once free, Hiccup quickly got up on his feet as he tried to escape, but Carl was still chasing after him. Hiccup threw anything he got his hands on at the elderly man, trying to shake him off his tail, but it wasn't much effective. Carl charged at Hiccup, once more tackling him to the ground, but before he could attack further, Hiccup retaliated, punching and hitting him until he managed to get the older man off him and crawled back.
Carl got back on his feet and marched towards Hiccup. Desperate, Hiccup patted the space around him to find something to defend himself with. Suddenly, he found something, and without thinking further, he picked up the object and threw it at Carl. The object hit the elderly man in the head, momentarily dazing him as he tripped on his foot and fell.
His head hit the corner of a nearby table as he fell, before he dropped to the floor. Blood began flowing out from the side of his head and began forming a pool on the floor. Hiccup crawled back, trying to get as much distance between him and the unmoving figure of Carl on the floor. Just then, he heard a crackling noise. He looked up, and saw the upper floor was on fire.
Hiccup quickly scrambled up on his feet and rushed towards the door as the fire spread throughout the house. Once reaching it, he tried to open it, but found the door locked. Desperate, Hiccup rammed his shoulder against the door a couple times, trying to force it open, but it didn't work. Hiccup got more panicked, but did his best to keep his mind cool. Taking a few steps back, he quickly dashed back at the door and kicked it. The momentum of his quick dash helped increase the force of the impact as his heel hit the area just beside the lock. The lock gave in under the impact and the door flung open and Hiccup quickly jumped outside, falling on the ground in the process.
The auburn haired man turned towards the house as he saw it getting ablaze. Hiccup let out a sigh of relief. It was all over now. Just then, he heard a rumbling noise. Hiccup turned towards his side and his eyes widened.
Hiccup gasped out in horror, as he saw the monster. Clambering back on his feet, he quickly turned back, and ran as fast as he could, trying to escape. Behind him, he could still hear its footsteps as it followed after him as he ran and ran for the sake of his life.
Suddenly, his left foot slipped on a patch of grass, and Hiccup lost his footing and fell down on the ground. Hearing the roar of the monster, Hiccup glanced behind him, and tried to crawl away, but the monster was faster.
Seeing no way out, Hiccup turned back, curling on the ground as he covered his head and face with his arms and closed his eyes, awaiting for his certain doom, as the monster lunged at him with a monstrous roar.
Suddenly Hiccup opened his eyes. There was nothing. Everything was silent as he found himself lying on the ground. Hiccup slowly got up from his spot on the ground. There was nothing around him. The silence of the forest greeted him as he looked around.
Bewildered by what happened, Hiccup walked away from the place. As dawn Broke, he found himself walking beside a road. His mind lingered back at the events of yesterday, trying to understand what just happened with him.
Far away from him, Hiccup heard the roar of a car engine along with the all too familiar noise of the police siren. He glanced back and saw a police car coming towards his direction. Hiccup stopped and raised his thumb for a lift.
