Edith stared out of the window as the rain continued to patter down. Everything that had happened that night was weighing heavily on her mind and even though Gregson tried to help, nothing seemed to change her mind. Mary could see her sister was struggling. They might not get on all the time but she cared a lot about Edith. She then turned her attention towards Rose. Clarkson had said she was fine after she had fainted. Tom stayed by her side the whole time and held her close if she needed it.

"This is getting ridiculous. We can't just wait for the police to arrive." Violet snapped, waking everyone from their somewhat slumber.

"Well I'm not going out there to find them! It's tipping it down." Isobel could see what Violet was thinking.

"We have to do something. We'll all go mad stuck in here." Edith supported Violet.

"Someone's already snapped!" Mary mumbled under her breath.

There was then a knock at the door of the room. Robert had kept it closed in case the servants had overheard something they shouldn't. Mainly Barrow but considering how the night was going so far, any of them could turn against the family. The papers would have a field day if they heard about this! Robert opened the door a little and looked out to see who it was. He then opened it more and Carson stepped in.

"I'm sorry to bother you M'Lord. I've just got word from Mr Drew, he's battling the tree that has fallen down and might get here sooner than he thought." Carson told a relieved family.

"That's good news, thank you Carson. How are the servants holding up?" Rose asked knowing it could affect the servants just as much.

"They're doing their jobs Ma'am." Carson quickly answered not wanting to scare the family with too much information.

"What about the police?" Robert said in a serious tone.

"Inspector Andrews said they're very busy but they're working with Drew to try and get here as soon as possible."

"Will they take the body? I mean will they have to stay very long or just leave with Strallan?" Robert knew everyone wanted to ask that question.

"I don't know M'Lord. He said that they'll be out as quickly as possible to cause less stress." Carson shrugged, for once he felt helpless as he couldn't answer their questions.

Robert could tell Carson was struggling a little with all their questions. He nodded for Carson to leave so no one would ask anything else.

"I think we were a bit overbearing." Edward mentioned seeing Carson leave flushed.

"Carson can deal with it." Robert even sounded unsure in saying that.

"So, someone might as well ask. Who was the last person to see Strallan last night?" Mary asked after a slight silence.

"Mary, I don't think we should go into that. Leave it for the police." Gregson spoke up.

"We might as well find out." Edith backed her sister, feeling like Gregson was hiding something.

Gregson removed his hand off of Edith's shoulder as she said this. Edith moved closer to Mary once he had done this.

"What's the matter? Something to tell us?" Mary could see the guilty look on Gregson's face.

"What?! Of course not." Gregson scoffed feeling offended at the superstition.

"Well, you care for Edith and Strallan left her at the altar. You could see how upset she was. You have quite a big motive." Mary continued to probe, even adding a wagging finger to prove her point.

"Not enough to kill a man!" Gregson shouted, he hated being backed into a corner.

The room then went silent as everyone felt awkward. Gregson sighed as he sat down where Edith had been. Edward patted his shoulder. Rose suddenly raised her head and scowled.

"I saw you arguing with Strallan last night." Rose accused Edward.

The family turned their heads as one to look at Edward.

"So what if I was? He had caused a scene and I didn't like to see Edith hurt." Edward obviously lied, going red from being asked something so strong.

"Excuse us for a minute." Gregson stood up and took Edward outside.

The door slammed behind them. Mary huffed and looked a little too pleased with herself. It seemed like she had found the person who had killed Strallan. Edith hated seeing Gregson upset but they needed to find out who it was. They needed closure before the police arrived.

Gregon grabbed Edward's arm and brought them away from the door so the family couldn't overhear them. His face looked like the thunder that was sounding around the home. They finally stopped just before the staircase as they suspected no one would come out there. The servants might have a strong stomach but an argument next to a body, they doubted anyone would want to get involved with.

"So, when were you going to tell me about the argument last night?" Gregson tried to contain his anger so he didn't end up shouting.

"I was going to tell you but you've got to believe me, I had nothing to do with that." Edward couldn't even look at the body without gulping.

"I knew it was a bad idea to let you come."

"How did we know he was going to come here?! I mean he wasn't even supposed to be here was he?!"

"I can't believe this is happening." Gregson paced back and forth trying to keep calm.

"Calm down. If they see us stressing about this then they'll turn us into the police without a second thought. Especially that sister." Edward couldn't even speak Mary's name after how she spoke to him.

"Mary's fine."

They were then disturbed by the door to the servant quarters opening. Barrow stopped as soon as he saw the two men. He looked at both of them and then returned back to the quarters.

"There you go. We're not safe to talk right now." Edward whispered just in case Barrow was still listening.

"You want to get struck by lightning go ahead!" Gregson pointed at the door.

Edward tried to say something but Gregson was already gone. He looked at the door, sighed and then followed Gregson back to the room. They didn't want to be too long.

Barrow stopped midway on the stairs. He hadn't heard much of the conversation between Edward and Gregson but he could tell it had been heated. Before all of this happened, he would rush down the stairs and tell everyone what he had just seen. Gregson and Edward were fresh meat to gossip around the house! He stopped himself though. Jimmy saw him stop on the stairs and joined him.

"So what did you hear?" Jimmy rubbed his hands together.

"Nothing." Barrow quickly answered not wanting to reveal anything in case he got into serious trouble.

"Oh come on! Mr Carson won't let me up there." Jimmy chuckled seeing Barrow's reaction.

Barrow ignored Jimmy however, and carried on down the stairs. Jimmy rolled his eyes and went to his room. He had done the jobs Mr Carson had given him and he didn't exactly want anymore. Barrow set the pot of tea he was carrying down on the table in the main quarters. He had meant to take it to the family in case they needed it. Daisy had been trying to get Mrs Patmore to stop panic cooking but it hadn't worked out very well. She had decided to move into the main quarters to get away from it all.

"Are you alright Mr Barrow?" Daisy noticed Barrow was shaking a little.

"Yes Daisy I'm fine." Barrow snapped, making Daisy jump.

"I was only asking! No need to bite my head off!"

"I just need some time alone."

Daisy sighed and then moved away. Barrow in a bad mood wasn't worth the hassle especially with everything else going on!

Carson answered the phone as it rang. He just hoped it was good news and that it was Drew. The tree was done or they had found another way through. Anything just to give his mind a rest.

"Mr Carson." Mr Drew's voice came through the phone, much to Carson's relief.

"Drew, thank goodness. I hope it's good news." Carson smiled to himself as he waited for Drew's answer.

"I'm afraid it's not. The weather is getting worse out here and I don't think we can do anything until morning." Drew said over the sound of the rain coming through the receiver.

Carson could cry at that point. This was all he needed! The family at loggerheads, guests stuck in the house, police on the way and a storm outside. Oh and a dead body as well!

"Mr Carson? Are you still there?" Drew's voice brought Carson back from his thoughts.

"Yes I'm still here. Well thank you for the update." Carson shook his head trying to stay focused.

"I'll call you in the morning then."

Before Carson could say goodbye, the line cut off. He didn't know whether it was the weather or Drew had just ended the call. Carson felt like throwing the receiver across the room but stayed calm and went back to working to help the family.

000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000

Drew had lost the call with Carson. He put the receiver down in the house he and the rest of the brigade were in for the night. They were soaked through and their morale was at rock bottom. Drew had to call it a night, to keep them working tomorrow. The police had caught up with them but hadn't told them why they were needed at the house. Confidential reasons they had put it down to.

"I'll call Carson in the morning to tell them how we're doing." Drew told Andrews as he came up behind him.

"Do you think you'll be able to get through? I mean I'm trying to remain hopeful." Andrews asked, looking around the little room they had been given for the night.

"As long as no more trees go down then yes. If they're power is out, then we might have to deal with that as well."

"Alright. I'll see you in the morning then Drew. If anything happens let me know." Andrews said goodnight.

Drew waved to him as he went. He looked back at the phone and then back at his crew. Most of them were either ringing out their uniforms, creating puddles on the ground, or trying to keep warm around the fire. It was bad enough it being a cold night, let alone it raining as well! The family would just have to wait until morning. He was sure whatever the police were needed for could wait until then.
