Tammo, Pasque, Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst and Joshy walked through the woods, on the trail of Lapis Lazuli. Joshy began reciting again:
"We kept a-rambling all the time,
I rustled grub, he rustled rhyme…"
Pearl cut him off. "Joshy, this isn't the time, okay?"
"Look!" Amethyst pointed up ahead. Standing before them was a massive tower made entirely of water. It stretched up into the sky, high above the treetops.
"This is it," said Garnet. "Lapis Lazuli is here."
Pasque noticed fish swimming around inside the water tower. "I say, look at this! It's just like a giant aquarium!"
A big voice emanated from the top of the tower. "YOU SHOULDN'T BE HERE!"
"Lapis Lazuli!" Tammo called. "It's me, Tammo!"
An outline of Lapis's face appeared on the side of the tower. "Go away! Before I make you."
"I don't understand," said Tammo. "What's going on? If you tell us, maybe we can help."
Lapis chuckled bitterly. "Help? That's a laugh! You Crystal Gems don't care about other Gems. All you care about is the Earth. But I never believed in this place. I just want to go home."
"Well, we're not stoppin' you from leavin'," said Joshy. "But you've gotta give the Redwallers back their water, wot wot!"
"I can't give it back," said Lapis. "I need it."
"Need it for what?" Tammo asked. He reached out a paw and touched the water tower. But when he touched it, another giant watery arm shot out from the tower and knocked him over.
"LEAVE ME ALONE!" Lapis roared.
Then four figures emerged from the tower. They looked just like Garnet, Pearl, Amethyst, and Tammo, except they were made of water. They even had weapons that looked like water versions of the Gems' weapons!
"Ruh-oh," said Amethyst.
"Stand together!" said Garnet. "Don't let them separate us!"
The water version of Garnet ran up and punched the real Garnet, knocking her to the ground. But Garnet got up and hit Water Garnet back. When her fist hit Water Garnet's head, the head disintegrated, but it quickly reformed. The two Garnets began to brawl with each other.
Meanwhile Amethyst used her whip to grab a rock from the ground and sling it at Water Amethyst. But the water clone was able to dodge it. Water Amethyst then raised her own whip. Although it was made of water too, it was able to lasso Amethyst and toss her away.
Pearl drew her sword and faced off against Water Pearl. Water Pearl kept blocking the real Pearl's thrusts, but eventually she was able to slice Water Pearl in half. The two halves, however, quickly reformed into two Water Pearls. "I hate fighting me," Pearl muttered.
Tammo and Pasque went against Water Tammo. They pounded on him with their fists, but none of the blows had any effect. Water Tammo just shrugged them all off, then reached out his watery arms and grabbed their heads, trapping them inside giant bubbles. Tammo couldn't breathe. He felt his lungs filling with water. His vision dimmed. Was this the end?
But Lapis Lazuli had reckoned without Joshy Stag Hare. The wizard pulled his wand from his robe and screamed "HURRICANE BLAST!" and a huge gust of wind came and blew all the water clones away!
Tammo and Pasque dropped to the ground, gasping for breath. Amethyst got back to her feet. "That was some quick thinking, Joshy!" she exclaimed. "Thanks a lot."
"What are we gonna do now?" Garnet wondered. "We've beaten the water clones, but Lapis is still up on top of that tower, and we can't get to her!"
"It seems we're at a jolly old impasse," Joshy said.
But Tammo had stood up and was walking towards the tower. Pasque noticed what he was doing. "Tammo?" she called. Tammo ignored her voice and kept walking.
"Tammo, wait!" Pearl cried. But now Tammo was standing directly in front of the tower.
"Lapis, I don't want to fight anymore," he said. "I'm coming up to see you… so please don't drown me, wot!"
With that, he stepped straight into the water tower.
He felt himself being jerked up into the air. He shot up higher and higher until he was standing on top of the tower, next to Lapis.
"What are you doing here, Tammo?" Lapis said.
"Seems to me I'm the one that should jolly well be asking you that question," he responded. "This thing with the pond, this is crazy! Can't we work this out? Gems shouldn't be fighting other Gems."
Lapis sighed. "I'm only taking your pond because I want to use it to transport myself back to Homeworld." She looked up in frustration. "But it won't stretch far enough! If my gem wasn't cracked, I would just fly away." She turned around to show Tammo her back, and Tammo noticed her gemstone for the first time. Sure enough, it had a crack running through it.
Tammo gasped with excitement. "I can fix your gem!" he cried. "I have healing powers!"
Lapis turned back around, gaping at him. "You do?"
"Sure. I'll fix you right up. Just hang on a tick, this might be a little weird…"
He licked his paw, covering it in saliva, and patted it on Lapis's gem, causing her to shudder. A brief moment passed, then the gem began to glow. A pair of watery wings sprouted from Lapis Lazuli's back.
Lapis was delighted. "Thank you, Tammo!"
"No prob, Bob," he said.
Lapis looked at him blankly. "It's Lapis."
"Yeah, I know that, wot," Tammo said.
She gave a sort of awkward half wave with her hand. "Okay, bye." She flew off into space.
Tammo watched her disappear into the sky, getting smaller and smaller. Suddenly the tower started rumbling. Being freed of Lapis's control, it was beginning to crumble and fall, and Tammo was falling with it! "Whoooaaa-aaaah!" he shouted.
Down below, Tammo's friends watched the tower collapse. "The whole thing's coming down!" Garnet yelled.
"And it's about to land right on top of us!" Amethyst said.
There was an enormous splash. Next instant, they all were submerged in a veritable tidal wave. They were carried along through Mossflower, unable to see where they were going.
When the ride finally stopped, they were surprised to see that they had ended up back in the Abbey Grounds. All the water was back in the pond again, and Tammo, Pasque, Joshy, and the Gems were floating in it. A group of Redwallers was gathered around the pond, and they were cheering to have their water restored to them.
Tammo and his friends swam to the edge of the pond and climbed out.
"You did it!" Tansy exclaimed. "You got the pond back!"
Tammo assumed a modest expression. "No need to thank me, chaps. All in a day's work."
Next thing he knew all sorts of creatures were crowding around him, slapping him on the back and showering him with praise.
Nearby, the other three Gems stood together, looking up at the sky. "So, Lapis made it off planet," said Garnet.
"What does this mean for us?" said Pearl.
"We'll just have to wait and see," Garnet said.
