Skipping forward a little :)

3rd September, 1920

James had been living with Jack, Rose and the girls for 3 weeks now. Rose found it difficult taking care of James along with the girls, he was rude constantly and Jack often brushed it off as it being because of his Mum - much to Rose's dismay. James and Tilly didn't really speak to one another that much, despite Jack and Rose encouraging them to get to know one another. Both Tilly and James had started school, Tilly in Kindergarten and James in 2nd grade which was breaking the days up for Rose, something she was grateful for. She would pick them up when school was out and head home to wait for Jack to finish work before they sat down to eat tea.

Jack was running late one evening when James and Tilly were in the living room. They were playing with their own toys despite being in the room together. Rose heard a slight bang and went to go and see what it was, stopping to listen to James and Tilly's conversation from outside the room "why did you do that?!" Tilly asked frustrated, picking up the blocks from her tower that James had just knocked down. James didn't answer, and instead asked a question of his own "Jack isn't your Dad, is he?" He said bluntly. Tilly just looked at him "erm… no… I have a Father but we don't see him anymore" Tilly said quietly. "Why do you have a silly name?" He asked "I don't…" "yes you do, Tilly is a silly name" "my real name is Matilda" she said, clearly upset. Rose wanted to go in to the living room, but also wanted to see where the conversation would go, so she had more to tell Jack if it came to it. "Does Jack like you? If he's not your Dad?" He asked, snidely "I don't think he does" James continued "maybe your own Dad doesn't like you, that's why you don't see him?" He questioned. "Maybe your Mum doesn't like you either?" Tilly just sat there, clearly close to tears, and Rose had, had enough and walked in "do not speak to her like that, do you understand?" She said firmly to James "go upstairs and sit on your bed" she said as she lifted Tilly up "I don't have to" James said smugly "yes, yes you do" Rose snapped but was interrupted by Jack walking in.

"Hey!" He grinned at the 3 of them, completely unaware of what was going on, but immediately noticed something was wrong by the look on Rose's face. "What's happened?" He frowned confused. Rose walked past him in to the kitchen with Tilly and sat her on the work top, Jack following her.

"What's happened?" He asked again "that boy, Jack! He's awful! He's just been horrible to Tilly!" "What did he say?" Jack frowned "he said she had a funny name, that it was her fault Cal didn't see her, that I didn't like her, that you didn't like her! I'm not having it Jack! It's us or him, I won't have my daughters in the same house as him, where they're guaranteed to have horrible comments aimed at them!" She finished, looking at Jack "I'm not choosing" Jack said to Rose, shocked she was putting a decision like that on him. Rose laughed in disbelief "you refusing to choose would suggest you've already decided" she nodded and walked upstairs quickly, throwing a bag of stuff together.

In the kitchen, Tilly was still sat on the worktop, looking at Jack. He walked towards her "are you OK?" He asked and held his arms out for her. "I don't want you… I want Mummy" she said, making Jack sigh. He knew what he should choose, and more importantly, he knew what he wanted to choose, but he couldn't leave James with no one.

Jack left Tilly in the kitchen and went in to the living room quickly "James, you need to apologise to Tilly and Rose" he demanded "I didn't do anything" he shrugged "Yes you did. You were mean to Tilly, you need to say sorry" he said frustrated. "I wasn't" he shrugged again. Jack went to speak but was interrupted by Rose walking downstairs "forget it Jack, he's not going to apologise, in his eyes he's done nothing wrong" she said, walking past him and back in to the kitchen. "Let's get your coat on baby" she smiled gently at Tilly and helped her put it on, before picking up Sophia and doing the same.

Jack had once again followed her in to the kitchen "Rose, don't do this. You can't leave. You know I love you, please… What about the girls? You can't keep them from me" he pleaded "As their mother, I can do what I want. As a decent person, we can arrange a time for you to see them, supervised" she said as she put her own jacket on "you don't trust me with them?" He said, clearly hurt. "Oh no, I trust you 100%, I just don't trust him, and as you're more loyal to that child, I don't trust you with mine" she said as she lifted Tilly off the counter "where are you going?" He asked "none of your business" she replied but Jack assumed it was the inn. "You know I love you" he said, grabbing her hand. "just not as much as you love a child that's being horrible to mine?" she laughed a little as she placed Sophia in her pram and opened the door before taking Tilly's hand and walking away.

Jack sighed angrily and walked in to the living room "you need to stop behaving like a brat! You can't be mean to Rose and Tilly, this was their home before it was yours! Now go to your room and think about what you've done!" He almost shouted "I didn't do anything!" James replied "you made my daughter cry! You told her me and Rose didn't like her! How can you say you did nothing?!" "She isn't your daughter" James felt the need to point out. Jack laughed in disbelief "go upstairs!" He said firmly. James sighed, annoyed and started walking upstairs "I told mum I wanted to go to grandmas but she sent me here!" He muttered to himself. "Stop right there" Jack said confused, hearing what he had just said. James turned to face Jack "you just told me to go to my room" but Jack ignored him "what do you mean 'you told mum you wanted to go to grandmas'? Your mother said there was no one else to take care of you?" He asked confused, his anger softening "she just said that because she knew Grandma wouldn't let her leave me with her… she's my Dad's mum" "you mean to tell me that you have a grandmother that doesn't know you've more or less been abandoned?" He said in shock. James just shrugged "I don't know" "where does she live?" Jack asked "don't know" he shrugged again, getting a sigh from Jack in response. "Do you really want to live with her if I can find her?" Jack asked. James nodded "she gives me what I want, like Mum and Dad did. I don't have to share my toys and Rose isn't there" he gave a disgusted look as he said her name. "That explains a lot" Jack muttered to himself, regarding his comment about getting what he wants. "Right, I'll see if I can find her then. In the meantime, go to your room. Regardless of what your parents let you do, you won't behave like that in my house" Jack said firmly. James just rolled his eyes and walked upstairs.

"Where are we going Mummy?" Tilly asked. "We'll go and stay at the other inn tonight" she squeezed Tilly's hand a little "why not Mary's?" Tilly asked confused "change of scenery darling" Rose lied, she knew Jack would find her immediately there and she didn't have the energy to argue. "We're not going back to Jack's?" She asked "not tonight darling" she smiled gently at her as they arrived at the inn. Whilst the owner of the inn - Olive - didn't know Rose well, she was aware of who she was so gave her a room with no problems.
