It was supposed to be a fun night out for mother and daughter at the Son Cubano restaurant in Newark, New Jersey. Kim Possible, the 34-year-old lead guitarist of StarSound, had taken Sienna Stoppable, her 11-year-old daughter for some bonding time earlier in the evening. They had spent time going over the basics of nightlife – something Kim's husband Ron Stoppable strongly suggested – at a park along the Newark riverfront.
After that, the two went to the Cuban restaurant to eat dinner and party on the dance floor with friends. Though Sienna was a little apprehensive due to it being her first time at a club, Kim was there by her side to guide her. Then, Kim requested some time alone, which her friends all agreed with. However, Sienna immediately became concerned for her mother's well-being.
Night had fallen across the Greater New York area. Out on the restaurant patio, Kim stood at the guardrail alone with a cocktail in her hand. She looked at the Manhattan skyline with a sorrowful expression when she was brought back to reality by the sound of footsteps. "There you are!" Sienna said as she approached her mother. "I've been looking everywhere for you. Is everything all right?"
"Huh? Oh, don't worry about me," Kim chuckled with a nervous smile.
Sienna remained unconvinced by her mother's behavior, so she began to push. "Mom…there's something you're not telling me. What's going on?" she demanded.
Realizing she had been caught in a white lie, Kim let out a heavy sigh and looked at Sienna. "Sweetie, what I'm about to tell you will shock you, so brace yourself," she warned before composing herself. "You never got to meet your great-grandmother."
Sienna's eyes widened at the bombshell revelation. "What? Are you serious?" she gasped.
"Yes," Kim replied with her face slowly crumpling. "It happened before you were born. Your dad and I were just in our early twenties when I got the news from your grandma."
Kim and Ron were watching TV one night in their Queens apartment when the former's phone rang. Pulling it out, she looked at the caller ID and instantly knew who it was. "It's Mom," she said. "Do you mind if I take this, Ron?"
"Not at all, KP," Ron replied. "Go ahead."
Kim went to the bedroom and closed the door to take her mother's call while Ron kept watching his program. After about 45 minutes, Ron spotted Kim emerging from the bedroom looking like she had suffered a devastating blow. "KP? What happened?" he asked worryingly.
The redhead slumped on the couch and cried on her husband's shoulder. "Mom…Mom called me about Nana," Kim explained through her tears. "She said the nursing home in Florida called her to say that Nana…that Nana…died of natural causes. I just wish I got to say goodbye to her, but because I was so focused on our relationship, I'll never get that chance now."
Unable to speak anymore, Kim sobbed even harder on Ron's shoulder. Feeling terrible for his wife, Ron pulled her close into his arms and caressed her hair. "It'll be fine, KP," he said reassuringly. "We'll get through this together. You're not alone in this world, and you never will be. It's going to be all right, Kim."
Kim dropped her cocktail, the glass shattering into many bits and the liquid spilling on the wooden patio. Like the broken glass, Kim's composure also shattered; she dropped to her knees and began sobbing uncontrollably, prompting Sienna to run up and hug her. "Mom, please don't be sad," the freckled girl said softly. "My great-grandma may be gone, but she's still watching over us from above. I love you, Mom – forever and always."
The tender moment between mother and daughter lasted for over half an hour until Kim's friends approached the two. Noticing them, Kim and Sienna got up and recomposed themselves to finish their night out. As they headed back into the restaurant, Kim looked back one last time and saw the spirit of Nana Possible winking at her and giving a thumbs up. Kim smiled before she turned back to her friends and Sienna as the spirit disappeared into the night.
