Chapter One: Draconic Rebirth
Jason Todd lay beaten on the floor of the warehouse on a mountain. The Joker had just finished wailing on him with a crowbar, breaking him in various ways, and the mad clown was preparing to leave.
"Okay, Kiddo. I got to go. It's been fun though, right?", Joker says as Jason layed quiet, "Well, maybe a smidge more fun for me than you. I'm guessing since you're being awful quiet", He puts on a thick winter jacket, "Anyway, be a good boy, finish your homework, and be in bed by nine. And hey! please tell the big man I said, "Hello"", he sinisterly finishes as he puts his fur hood up and closes the warehouse door and leaves, "HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!"
After he leaves, Jason ignores his beaten and broken body to carefully move around to get his cuffed hands from behind him to his front by bringings his knees to his chest and tipping his hands under his feet. Jason groans in pain as he gets to his feet and takes a step to the door. Only to fall flat from the pain. However, he started crawling his way to the door. Once there, he tries to open the door but it wouldn't budge, as Joker had locked it. Turning over in pain, Jason then hears a beeping sound, signaling bomb. He sees that had reached within ten seconds and accepts his fate.
Outside
Unknown to Jason, Batman and the Team were racing to his location. Batman was on the batcycle, blitzing through the snow to the warehouse while The Team was flying the Bioship behind him but were closing in.
"Dammit, I'm going on ahead!", Kid Flash calls out and jumps out the Bioship when it was close to the ground. He super speeds ahead of the team and nears Batman. Batman had reached the plateau of the warehouse and jumps of the cycle and begins running towards it while Kid Flash speeds past him. But before either could get to close...
KABOOOM!!!"
...the ware house explodes in a fire ball. Coating the area in debri, with Kid Flash flying back because he was closer than Batman. Some debri covered the duo before the Bioship lands nearby.
"Kid! Batman! Robin!", Nightwing, he first Robin, calls out for them as some of the Team exits the ship. Kid Flash and Batman get up with out much issue. However, the ground begins to quake before cracking open.
"Move!", Batman orders as those on the snowy slope jump away while Miss Martian flies Bioship into the air.
The cracked ground opens below Jason's body and he falls in. This crack opened into a cavern housing a massive magma pool. Jason soon fell into said magma.
"Jason!", Superboy, The Boy of Steel, yells before jumping into the new crevice. He lands on one of the solid rock formations within the cavern with a crack as he looks for where Jason landed. However, he no longer had the Shields and thus didn't have X-Ray Vision.
Suddenly, the cavern began shaking before a figure jumps from the magma pit, lava splattering on the ground as the figure lands not far from Superboy.
This is a recovered Jason, who has underwent some kind of change in the magma. His skin was a deep orange and scaly. His black dyed hair was red once more and spiked up, revealing some short horns on his forehead. His arms, legs, and chest were more lizardy with some kind of jewel looking thing in the center of his chest. Jason's clothes had burned away except for his pants from his waist to his calves.
He growls like an animal before roaring at the caves ceiling, releasing a massive stream of firebreath into the air and cailing. The people on the surface duck away as the fire spewed from the cracked entrance into the cavern, with Miss Martian feeling fearful and weakened within the Bioship.
Superboy could only stare, "Jason?", looking at the transformed Robin. The two of them sort of have a rivalry similar to their mentors. But seeing Jason look so monstrous was a shock.
Jason then rushed him at a speed that surprised the boy of steel. He blocked the feral claws but he flew up into the ceiling and out of the cavern, with the feral teen giving chase.
On The Surface
Batman and the gathered teen heroes were recovering from the fire burst when Superboy is launched from the ground and they took cover from more debri. Jason soon arrives after on the surface.
Needless to say, the group were taken aback by Jason's appearance, especially since they were expecting Jason to be in a worst state.
He then roared at them and charged.
Batman blocks while the others move. Batman is hit and sent flying back, feeling as though he fractured his arm.
'What happened to him? He's so much stronger', Batman thought before skidding across the snowy ground.
"Guys, somethings wrong with him. detain him now", Nightwing thought to the Team via the mind link from Miss Martian.
Kid Flash runs in and does a german suplex, only for Jason to break the hold with ease, grab him by the leg and threw Kid Flash away from him. Kid Flash lands roughly and goes to get up but his foot is injured and he can't move.
Superboy had recovered from the first hit and went in. He tried to grab him but Jason would retaliate to soon. They were soon fighting, with Superboy on the defensive Jason left a serious scratch over his chest and he scream in pain.
"Conner!", Miss Martian cries out before trying her telekinesis to retrain Jason. Jason retaliates with a fire breath at her, causing her to cry out in pain and release him.
Nightwing, Artemis, and Batman used their capture wires, which barely deterred Jason as they began to break.
"Eit mih pu htw epor", Zatanna casts her magic and Jason is covered in magic ropes. Troia join in with her lasso, with Aqualad, Tempest and Aquagirl using their hydrokinesis to wrap him up some more. However, Jason was powering though and was attempting to break their hold.
Miss Martian had recovered and went to see if she could knock him out with her powers, only to suffer a backlash and a headache as a result.
Batman grabs his strongest knock out gas pellet from his utility belt and ran up to Jason. Jason goes to launch another breath of fire but Batman has already threw the pellets into his mouth. He hacked and coughed before eventually falling asleep.
The heroes gathered around him as he changed back into his normal appearance, though still with his natural red hair.
"Get him back to Mount Justice Medic Bay, as well as get yourselves checked out", Batman orders while referring to Kid Flash, Superboy, and Miss Martian, while ignoring his own injuries.
The Team quickly boards Bioship with Jason in tow while Batman took his Batcycle back to his own transport.
Days Later
Jason awakens to the white ceilings of the Mount Justice Medical Bay. He groans and tries to get up, only to find that he's completely strapped down.
"Hey. Hey! Hello!", Jason cals while struggling to get out, his eyes became amber-yellow and pupil sharpened, as he begins to fear being in the Joker's grasps, before Black Canary rushed in.
"Whoa, easy Jason, easy", she says as she approaches him. Jason calms down and his breathing slows.
"Jason, do you remember what happened?", she asked him.
"I was... captured by Joker. He beat me with a crowbar for I don't know how long. He left me alone, I crawled to the door to escape... but it was locked. I then noticed the bomb and it was down to the single digits and I just excepted I was going to die.", Jason informs her, but doesn't look at her.
"Is that the last thing?", Black Canary inquires of him, 'Nothing after?"
"Yes", he replies.
"Well...", she then went on to explain what happened after. How everyone arrived as the bomb went off and he fell into a new crack that lead to a magma pit. How he went for a swim into the magma. how he jumped out completely fine but transformed. And how he proceeded to fight everyone before they were able to detain him.
"They are currently studying what happened to you, and you were strapped down just in case you woke up the same as when you went under", Black Canary informs before undoing the straps.
"They find anything?", Jason asks, getting up now that he's free.
"They wanted to wait for you to recover before they go over it", she informs, "head to the Mission Room for debriefing".
She then left and Jason got changed into his casuals. They were black jeans, red shoes, a green shirt with some tribal symbol on the chest and a red leather jacket. He also wore sunglasses, which was typical casual wear when with The Team or The League for the Batfamily.
He left the med bay and made his way to the mission room, all while thinking about his change and why he would attack his friends and teammates.
He arrives to the mission room to see Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Red Tornado, and Doctor Fate. The 'Trinity' he kind of suspected duo to being the do three of the League, Red Tornado was obvious since he was The Team's main supervisor, but he has no clue why Doctor Fate was here.
They all notice his arrival, with Superman greeting him, "Jason. It's good to see you're alright".
"Hey", Jason greets back cooly.
The holographic screen pulled up, showing various testing, his DNA samples, and an image of his transformation. This is the first time he consciously saw this form. Egotistically, he thought it looked cool.
"We've looked through your genetic makeup, and even though it's different, it looks like it wasn't artificially altered in anyway", Batman supplies.
"Meaning it happened naturally?", Jason inquires.
"For you, yes", Wonder Woman says, "Whatever happened, originates from your parents"
"We've tested on what species or genetic mutations that your lineage may of crossbred in someway with, like Killer Croc's condition", Batman explains. Jason was thankful that his appears to be a transformation type and not permanent like Waylon Jones.
"We haven't found anything on earth that matched, so we tried alien", Superman states.
"We were reaching a dead end when Doctor Fate appeared", Wonder Woman says.
Doctor Fate then steps forward, "During my years, I've encountered many mystical beings which is how I knew for your origins.
'Get on with it", Jason thought, feeling that this was getting long winded.
"You new state is draconic in nature. From which Dragon, I do not know but you are of dragon blood", Doctor Fate informs.
"Dragon? Seriously?", Jason asks incredulously.
"Yes. Dragons are powerful beings that one must not take lightly", Doctor Fate says.
"May I ask how Jason could be descended from a dragon or dragons?", Wonder Woman asks.
"Dragons are not like the beasts most media portrays them as. they are as intelligent as humans, if not more so. And the more powerful ones a capable of taking a humanoid form", Doctor Fate answers, "One could have easily gave a draconic blessing or simply bred with his bloodline".
"So it could be anything? From an ancestor earning a favor to my mother having an affair?", Jason summarizes.
"Yes, but now we must discuss what you should do moving forward", Doctor Fate states
"What do you mean, Fate?", Superman asks him.
"Dragons instinctually have certain qualities that make being around people difficult. Such as being possessive of his property. Not to mention he shouldn't be around populated areas should he return to his feral mindset like when he awoken his heritage.", Doctor Fate tells them.
"Meaning he must travel to a secluded location for now", Red Tornado comments.
"I would suggest Themyscira but it's women only and they may hunt him for sport", Wonder Woman says.
Jason was getting a little agitated as it felt as though they were talking about him like he wasn't there. He sighs in aggravation but releases a stream a fire before quickly closes his mouth with his right hand covering it. The adults were quick to notice this do to the light an heat of the flames.
"You can take it from me, learning to control your powers while going to school is a pain", Superman says, "And Jason might have an even worst time due to so much power being unlocked at once."
Batman looked to Jason before looking back to the others, "Don't you all worry, I know a place".
Later, Batcave
Jason and the now unmasked Bruce are in the Batcave under Wayne Manor. They had Zeta Tubed there from Mount Justice after talking about a place for Jason to train to control his dragon power.
"So, Bruce, what's this place where I'll be going? Not some crappy dungeon, I hope?", Jason asks Bruce.
"No, nothing like that", Bruce answers, "During my travels before being Batman, I've trained at several schools and temples".
"And?", Jason asks as they made their way to the Batwing.
"And, one of them was said to have a dragon within. If so, it may be the best place for you to train, and recover", Bruce says, the last part referring to his ordeal at the Joker's hands.
They enter the Batwing, with Jason still in his casual clothes. They begin to fly to a place that they didn't have.
Somewhere in China.
They soon land not far from the temple and head there on foot. Jason could see that the temple buildings were a white creme color with dark blue tile roofs. They arrive at the entrance to see people waiting for them, they appear to be monks. They were black kung fu slip-on shoes, black gi pants, white tops with black sashes.
The one that appears to be the leader approaches them. he was bald like the others while having thick eyebrows, groomed mustache and goatee. He also wore a blue sleeveless robe over the basic monk clothes and had a golden medallion of some kind.
"Greetings, Bruce Wayne. Or do you prefer Batman?", the leader greets with a bow to Bruce, who was still dressed as Batman.
"Greetings, Master Fung. And Bruce is fine", Bruce bows back.
"May I ask what brings you here?", Master Fung asks while stroking his goatee.
"My protege here", Bruce gestures to Jason, "has come into powers he can't control on his own. Powers of a dragon. I remembered rumors of a dragon when I was training here and we hope for your help".
Master Fung looks to the young man his old student brought him. Yes, he could sense dragon energy, but also Xiaolin potential.
"Hmm, young man. Why don't explore the temple while I talk with your mentor", Master Fung suggests to Jason.
Jason looks to Bruce, who nods, "Sure". And Jason leaves to explore the grounds that he may be staying at for awhile.
With Bruce and Master Fung
The rest of the monks went about their duties while they talk.
"I assume it was recent and you had no choice but to bring him here", Master Fung.
"Once he awoken the power, he went feral and attacked his friends and allies. I figured here with someone of your skill. He can be easily subdued while he trains", Bruce replies, "Also, he recently suffered a traumatic event and I don't want him in Gotham where it would only aggravate his mental health".
"Hmm", Fung stroked his chin before speaking, "I won't pry, the boy can tell me while he's here, since I accept his tutelage. As for the rumors of a dragon, they are very much true, though Dojo Kanojo Cho isn't exactly the best role model for him". To which Bruce raise his brow.
With Jason.
Jason was wondering around the temple. Taking in the decor and environment of the temple and it's gardens. So far, the inhabitants were older men, middle age to elderly.
Eventually, he reaches what looks to be a training grounds. There, he sees a young boy, younger then himself, practicing his martial arts.
He was a young asian boy, most likely chinese. Bald with thin black eyebrows and black eyes. He wasn't sure about his age but he was short in height. The boy wore the same shoes and pants as the monks but wore a red top with black cuffs on the sleeves and a blue sash.
The boy stops and looks to Jason.
'Guess he noticed me watching', Jason thought before approaching the boy.
"Hello, may I ask whom you are and why you are here", the boy asked Jason in textbook english.
"My name is Jason Todd and I may be a future student of this temple", Jason replies, literally looking down at him.
"Oh, well, I hope to study with you", The boy then bows, to which Jason returns, "My name is Omi, a warrior-in-training".
"I saw you training, lots of fluid movements", Jason compliments, a rarity from him, but Omi deserved.
"Why of course, I've been training since I was a infant", Omi brags.
'And he's egotistical", Jason thought.
Jason does a quick look around, "So, Omi, what does a one do around here, when not studying?"
"Well, I train, mediate, have tea, and clean the temple", Omi replies.
"Really?", Jason asks, "You don't do anything else? Something fun?".
"Fun?", Omi questions.
'Right. With only the old coots. Kid probably doesn't have any friends.', Jason thought, 'Or Master Fung encourages to much discipline for my liking'.
"So, do you send time with anyone in the temple", Jason asks Omi.
"I spend time with Master Fung", Omi answers, to which Jason sighs to himself as hid head falls, "There is also Dojo".
Jason lifts his head, "Dojo?".
A Little Later
Jason and Omi made their way through the temple, eventually ending up near a scroll room.
"And this is the ancient scroll room. Where we store our valuable knowledge", Omi explains, showing Jason a room where he expected to see many scrolls in the room, only to see one big scroll within a golden casing with handles on an angled table. At was surrounded by constantly burning torches
"Only one scroll?", Jason asked incredulously.
"Yes, the Ancient Scroll of the Shen Gong Wu", Omi informs.
"Shen Gong Wu", Jason asks.
Omi realizes his blunder, "Oh, uh. You'll have to be informed by Master Fung about such things".
Jason then notices something green slither passed them in his peripheral. He looked to it to see a green tail with a red fur tip scurrying away. Ever investigative, Jason goes to follow it.
Omi quickly follows, "Maybe we should go meet with Master Fung now. So he can decide what you may learn", Omi tries to stall.
They travel into a open room with a tea table, some sitting cushions, and some decorations. The room had to open patio areas to the outside along with some hallways.
"Maybe you'd like to wait here for Master Fung?", Omi suggests to him.
Jason looks around and spots the red fur hidden under one of the cushions, "Sure", he tells Omi and approaches the cushions. Omi sits on one of the cushions while Jason approaches the creature was hiding. He stand above the cushion, jups up and crosses his legs before plopping down on it.
"YYYAAAWWWW!!!!", the creature screams at it out from under the cushion. It's revealed to be some kind of serpent. It was overall green in color, with yellow spine fins, red furred tail tip along with a red furred goatee. It had two arms with four claw fingered hands. The back of his head broke off into two feathery looking horns. It's eyes had white sclera and black irises.
"What the hell, kid?! Watch where you're sitting next time!", he yells at Jason, the voice being male in pitch. he kind of sounded a lot like Wayne Knight, Newman from Seinfeld.
"Dojo!", Omi calls out to Dojo revealing himself before Jason.
"It's alright, Omi", Master Fung says as he enters from the yard, Batman nowhere in sight while he carried Jason's bag, "He is the reason Jason is here", he looks to Dojo, "Introduce yourself".
He bows grandiosity, "Dojo Kanojo Cho. Guardian Dragon of the Xiaolin Temple and Keeper of the Ancient Scroll of the Shen Gong Wu."
"Jason Todd", Jason bluntly greets.
"Jason here is a fellow dragon", Master Fung tells them.
"A Xiaolin Dragon like myself?!", Omi asks with a glimmer in his eyes.
"No, well, maybe. What I meant was that he is a dragon, like Dojo is", Master Fung elaborates.
"Really?!", Omi asks in astonishment, looking over Jason in wonderment before looking confused, "But he appears human, like me and you, Master Fung"
"I can tell he's a dragon. We dragons are able to sense each other out like that.", Dojo says before sniffing the air, "Smells you've prematurely matured. Why you're in human form is also a mystery for me."
"I was born and raised human. I discovered I might be descended from dragons or something when my powers activated.", Jason informs him.
"And learning to use those powers is why he is here, Dojo", Master Fung states, "Both Dojo and I will be training him while he is here."
"Me?! Train him?!", Dojo is shocked. Despite being an old, ancient dragon, he can be lazy and even selfish, and he's definitely not the wisest, especially amongst dragons. No one, not himself or even Omi, saw him as teacher material.
"Yes. He has no other dragons to learn from, so you'll teach him dragon knowledge, no matter how basic it may seem. I'll be teaching mental fortitude and martial arts, along with anything else he may want to learn", Master Fung states.
Jason takes the opportunity to ask, "Then what are Shen Gong Wu?"
Master Fung looks to him, then to Omi and Dojo before gesturing them all to sit around the table.
Another monk must have quietly came by, because there was hot tea at the ready for Master Fung.
"First, I must tell you of our history. Thousands of years ago, a furious battle was waged between the great and noble Xiaolin Dragon, Dashi, and the evil Heylin Witch, Wuya. This was the first Xiaolin Showdown. Wuya pitted her dark magic against Dashi and his mystical powered objects, the Shen Gong Wu. In the end, Dashi triumphed and Wuya was forever imprisoned in a sacred wooden puzzle box. The threat averted, Dashi spread his Shen Gong Wu around the Earth. For generations, They have maintained the balance between good and evil. And a long line of Xiaolin Dragons have stood ready to face evil should that balance ever shift.", Master Fung tells the story.
"So Shen Gong Wu are mystical items with varying powers for their wielders", Jason says.
"Yes", the trio reply.
"And what's with the Shaolin and Heylin?", Jason asks.
"First, it's Xiaolin, X-I-A-O-L-I-N, not shaolin. Second, Xiaolin is the forces for Good, while Heylin is the forces for evil. We are Xiaolin Warriors", Master Fung answers.
"Right. And what are Xiaolin Dragons? Are they actual dragons, like me and Dojo?", Jason asks him.
"No, Xiaolin Dragons are the Xiaolin Warriors on the front lines of combat against the Heylins. Usually highly skilled young ones, such Omi", Master Fung informs.
"Okay. And as for the balance, you do know about the hero and villain situation for the rest of the world, right?", Jason asks with a raised eyebrow, "with the tons of evil bad guys causing chaos".
"Yes, but we deal with conflict involving mysticism and the Shen Gong Wu. Once they've activated, do we act. The situation you've experienced till now, we don't get that involved in, though I feel that might change in the future", Master Fung answers him.
He takes notice of the time, "Hmm, it's getting late. Your training will begin tomorrow. Omi will lead you to an empty room for yourself, and you'll be supplied with Xiaolin robes similar to Omi's for training."
They then seperate with bows. Dojo began panicking to Master Fung about teaching while Omi lead Jason to his room. They arrive to an massive room with curtained off sections.
"This one can be yours", Omi says to one of the end ones, "It is right across from mine".
"Thanks", Jason says before opening the curtain to only see a flat mat for a bed and a wooden chest for storage. He looks to Omi's area to see something similar but a wooden training stand and various posters of martial arts techniques.
'at least we can change our own areas to our own tastes, I guess.', Jason thought to himself.
Jason closed his curtain. He put his bag into the chest and laid down on the mat.
"And like that, I'm getting an actual mattress asap", Jason mutters as he tries to go to sleep at the uncomfortable floor mat. He hopes his training goes well.
Chapter End
AN: This will focus on mysticism and Dragons. I'll be skipping a few years, with next chapter being the first episode of Xiaolin Showdown. Whether or not Jason will be a child/descendent of Belloc (Firebreather) or some other draconic figure in fiction is still in the air.
More crossovers or easter eggs are still on the table.
