Preface

In 1607, England established its first colony in North America—the New World. Many generations of colonists lived and died here, far from their motherland, and a spirit of independence eventually took root. They built cities and roads, established local laws and governments, and developed a strong and distinct identity as "Americans." When the British Empire demanded unfair taxes in 1765, they protested. When their protests went unheard, they rebelled. In 1776, representatives from all Thirteen Colonies gathered to declare the independence of a brand new nation: the United States of America.

This act not only gave rise to a powerful nation, but it also gave birth...to her.
