Carlos And I went to the back of the magistrates courtroom to watch the courtroom proceedings. My father sat up front waiting for them to bring my mom into the courtroom. We waited for about fifteen minutes when the door opened and mom walked in escorted by the bailiff. They called her case and my dad went to stand by her.
Mom looked bedraggled and Dirty except for her outfit which was clean. She didn't even acknowledge my dad who was there to support her.
Mom looked at the female judge and started talking nonsense to the judge. She called the judge Stephanie, Carlos squeezed my hand. Mom said to the magistrate "why are you throwing your life away , you need to marry my son. Then mom lost control and started screaming "Joey, I'm Sorry my love we can't be together." She tried to run out of the courtroom and had to be restrained. The magistrate was unable to calm her down and they had to physically remove Mom from the courtroom.
My dad stood and the magistrate spoke with him. Dad was physically shaken and upset by her outbursts. He admitted she had outbursts before but those were only when she was drinking. He also said she didn't listen to anything he said and wouldn't get help.
The magistrate ordered a psychiatric evaluation, and placed Mom into a psychiatric hospital for observation for the next 48 hours. Once the evaluation was complete they would decide what steps to take but right now she wasn't mentally stable.
I went to my dad and hugged him. I didn't know what to say to him. He hugged me back, "I was afraid it was getting worse. She has had a few episodes but never one like this one. She refused to go to the doctor."
We headed back to the hotel, on the way back we tried to figure out damage control. Ranger said the less we said the better for everyone, especially mom. We agreed that we just wouldn't talk about her to the wedding guests. Most of the guests were leaving today anyway. We needed to talk with Valerie and Grandma, I decided to ask Mary Lou if she could watch the girls while we had a very difficult adult conversation.
Ranger went to make sure everyone was enjoying themselves. Most of the Rangeman employees had left early this morning to get back to manning the offices. His parents were staying until tomorrow, he had bought them tickets to see Rod Stewart and they were enjoying sightseeing around Las Vegas. Lula and Connie took an early flight back to open up the bonds office and to stir up the gossip in the Burg.
I managed to get Dad, Valerie and Grandma Mazur together in the sitting area of the suite. Mary Lou was happy to watch Val's girl after I told her what had happened.
Daddy explained the whole situation. Mom's issues he'd been seeing at home and then to what happened last night. Valerie couldn't believe it. She was totally clueless as to mom's drinking or at least she acted like this was shocking. Grandma Mazur just shook her head. "I watched her drink her tea, and I tried to get her to stop, but it was no use." grandma said. After our meeting we decided that everyone should go on with their travel itinerary, Carlos, Dad and I would remain here until the judge decides what to do.
Ranger did inform Tank. Tank was able to help get everyone back to the airport without anyone knowing about mom.
I felt so bad for daddy and I worried about my mom, yes she's been a pain in the ass and she's constantly finding fault with me, but she's still my mom!
I felt ashamed for my own feelings about mom and ashamed that my family had to deal with this right after my wedding to Carlos. I also felt ashamed that Carlos had seen her act so crazy today.
I decided to go back up to our room and rest. I was exhausted, hungry and an emotional wreck. Carlos was off somewhere dealing with everything and I just had enough.
I got on the bed and curled up into a ball and cried. Carlos found me this way and scooped me up into his arms. You are not your mother! You have no control over her actions. You are strong, brave and a better daughter than most. He just held me and let me cry. Eventually, I fell asleep. Comforted in the love and care of my new husband.
The next few days past quickly, Carlos' parents flew back to Newark. Tank and all of Rangeman were back at work. Valerie, the girls and Grandma Mazur all went home. Daddy stayed to find out what was going to happen to mom.
The forty-eight hour observation was concluded and the findings were not good.
Mom had been diagnosed with Alcoholic Brain Damage. It was severe Korsakoff Syndrome and she would get progressively worse.
The court's ruling on the charges was she wasn't mentally stable enough to actually understand the charges brought against her. She needed to be in a long term care facility that specializes in Alcoholic Dementia. My dad looked resigned by the outcome, and began to look for a facility near Trenton that could help mom. Thankfully Carlos found a great facility in Newark that was trying new methods of treatment. It was a beautiful, peaceful facility in a convenient location.
Dad and mom returned in an air ambulance Carlos had reserved for them and the facility met them at the Newark Airport. Dad made sure mom was comfortable and that she would get the help she needed.
After such a trying few days Carlos decided we needed some fun and adventure. We ended up going to see some Headliners in Las Vegas at night. Carlos also set up a day trip to Hoover Dam. We also went water skiing on Lake Mead. The coolest thing we did though was a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. We spent a week in Las Vegas and Carlos said our real honeymoon would be when we go back to Hawaii in a couple of months.
I heard from dad that mom had settled into the new facility, but was suffering from alcohol withdrawal. He thought it would be difficult but something she would have to do.
He and Grandma Mazur were actually getting along much better and Valerie was bringing the girls by much more often for visits.
Our week in Las Vegas was coming to an end. We stepped on the jet ready to return to Trenton. We just had no idea what we were in store for, on our return!
