Rose-Xiao Long Household
Patch, Kingdom of Vale
The Next Day
Darkness, that's all Remy could see initially as he came to consciousness. The dark void of nothingness. Was he dreaming? Was he dead? Well, this would be a boring story otherwise, so no. The young man slowly got up with a groan, his eyes heavy, and feeling a weight on his body. No, not the weight of responsibility, but of a certain tricolor corgi, currently curled up on his chest.
"Ugh, Zwei, get off of me." Remy said, causing the pooch to look at one of his humans with adoration, standing up, walking over his chest (which was still sore) and licking Remy in the face. "Y-yes, yes, I'm happy to see you too boy." The newly-minted Driver added, as Zwei got off of his chest and trotted over to his bedroom door, which was ajar. It was as Remy had fully stood up from his bed, that he noticed a delectable aroma emanating from the kitchen.
'Dad must've just got done cooking breakfast.' Remy thought, walking downstairs. Instead, he noticed that Pyra was the one cooking breakfast, while he saw his sisters, his uncle, and his father sitting at the table. Taiyang Xiao Long is a man with blond hair that has two small strands sticking out from the top and blue eyes. He also had a soul patch and small stubble along his jawline. He had a tattoo of his emblem, which much like Yang's, resembled a heart. His outfit primarily consists of brown cargo shorts with a dark brown belt, black shoes, a red bandana on his left arm and a brown leather vest over a tan dress shirt with the right sleeve cut off. The only pieces of armor on him included a metal spaulder, a leather vambrace and a brown fingerless glove all on his right arm.
"Morning, sleepyhead." Tai said, beckoning his only son towards an empty seat. "You've been out for quite a while there, scamp." He added, as Remy sat down at the table. "Still, you know what you did was completely reckless right?"
"What was I supposed to do, dad?" Remy asked, looking at the spread of food that Pyra had cooked, which included eggs, toast, bacon, hash browns and chocolate chip pancakes, which were his favorite. "I couldn't just sit by while Ruby, Yang and Uncle Qrow got creamed by that Beringel?" He added, as Pyra set the last thing she was cooking, which was a tray of sausage patties.
"Don't be too hard on your dad, Remy." Pyra said, sitting down with the family. "He was just worried about you." She added, as she set aside some bacon for Zwei.
"Yeah, I know. But sometimes, he can be a bit TOO overprotective at times." Remy replied, the young Driver serving himself some pancakes, bacon and hash browns. "And besides, if we DIDN'T intervene, things seriously could've been MUCH worse." The only Rose boy said, much to the exasperation of his dad and sister.
"He's got you there, Tai." Qrow added, adding a bit of his whisky to the coffee prepared by the fire Blade, everyone now dishing up some food and beginning to dig in.
"So, Pyra, was it?" Yang asked, taking a bite of some bacon. "How exactly did-" Was all she got out before Ruby cut in.
"This food is amazing!" Ruby said excitedly, stars forming in her eyes. "How'd you make it SO GOOD?" She added, taking another bite of her pancakes.
"Well, if it involves fire, I can do it." Pyra answered, snapping her fingers and producing a small flame. "Bake, broil, grill, fry... You name it, I'm your girl." She added, waiving her hand and extinguishing the fire. "But if you want ice cream, you're better off asking someone else." The Blade finished with a nervous chuckle.
"Anyway, like I was TRYING to say before I was so rudely interrupted..." Yang said, giving a joking glare at her baby sister before returning her gaze back to Pyra. "How exactly did you know Remy's name, and how did he know yours?" She asked, looking at the redheaded Blade inquisitively.
"Well, it has to do with when Reny grabbed the hilt of my sword." Pyra answered, getting everyone's attention. "When he touched it, that acted as the catalyst for our resonation. And in doing so, I took a look into some of his memories, and he looked into mine. So, that's how we know each other's names." Pyra explained, Qrow and Tai were a tad more skeptical, but chose to believe her, especially as it was because of her, that Remy's able to become a Huntsman.
"Wow, Blades are so AWESOME!" Ruby exclaimed, the stars in her eyes becoming somehow brighter.
"Oh, ok." Yang said, drinking some orange juice.
"In any event, guess it's a good thing I'm here then." Qrow said, "I've got a few moves that I can teach you that can help, especially as it involves some sick sword moves."
"Actually Uncle Qrow, I was hoping to have Gramps teach me how to use more, advanced Arts." Remy admitted sheepishly, picking at his food with his fork. "Not that you don't have some cool moves to teach me, but-" Remy was adding, until Qrow cut him off with a chuckle.
"I figured you'd say that, cause I was gonna accompany you to visit him. Especially as he's got something to give you that once belonged to Rex." Qrow said, making Remy's eyes go wide at the mention of his and Ruby's only biological uncle.
"Gramps has something from Uncle Rex?" Remy asked, setting his glass of orange juice down, Pyra wiping his mouth for him, much to his irritation.
"Heh, yeah. Said that if you were old enough, He'd give it to you." The ex-bandit answered, having finished his plate, but when he went to grab his glass, it shattered.
"Oh my, are you OK, Qrow?" Pyra asked in concern, as Qrow wiped the orange juice from the table, and himself with a towel.
"Yeah, that's just his Semblance acting up again." Taiyang replied with a smarmy smirk. "Remy, why don't you and your sisters get ready? There's something that your uncle and I need to talk to Pyra about." Tai added, as the Rose-Xiao Long siblings looked at their father with confusion.
"Don't worry kiddo, Pyra's not in trouble, we just have to clear some things up." Qrow said, attempting to put his nephew at ease. For his part, Remy wasn't exactly buying their explanations, but chose not to question it for the moment. He, Ruby and Yang all cleaned their plates, and headed upstairs, as soon as the trio were confirmed out of earshot, both Tai and Qrow looked at Pyra, their expressions shifting from rather jovial to serious.
"So, you two probably figured out who, or rather WHAT I am, right?" Pyra asked, her face being downcast, even while her smile remained, knowing that Remy's dad and uncle respectively had guessed what she was.
"I mean, someone needs to be drunker than I am to NOT recognize the Aegis." Qrow replied, taking a quick swig from his flask. "And that'd be comical for a variety of reasons." He added, his red eyes narrowing slightly.
"What my chronically drunk brother-in-law means, is that we were expecting you to be a bit more, blonde." Tai said, standing up. "And as much as you might give an explanation as to why you're now a redhead and not a blonde, all we're worried about is Remy."
"I understand. I wasn't planning on telling Remy who I really am, not unless he asks. And even then..." Pyra said, barely saying the last thing above a whisper. "I swear, I will do everything in my power as Remy's Blade, to keep him safe. Even if..." She finished, her smile now faded.
"Whoa, relax there. We just wanted to make certain that you didn't have any ulterior motives for Remy." Tai added, his hands in a placation motion. "Guess we don't have to worry about that, eh, Qrow?" Tai asked, which only caused Qrow to shrug his shoulders slightly. Pyra looked at the two veteran Huntsmen, her eyes analyzing them thoroughly.
"I understand." Pyra finally said, her tone returning to a somewhat cheerful disposition. "As Remy's father and Uncle, the two of you want to keep him safe." She added, as Remy, Yang and Ruby descended down the stairs.
"Hey, are the two of you done interrogating Pyra?" The young Driver asked, an eyebrow raised. "We're burning daylight." Remy added, Ruby bouncing on the balls of her feet in excitement.
"Alright, alright. Qrow and I are done, you guys better go and head to the quay before the larger ships get there." Tai said, as Qrow, Ruby, Yang and the duo of Remy and Pyra left, Ruby giving a quick "Bye dad!" as the five of them left to head towards the quay. Tai could only chuckle sadly, looking at a picture of himself and Summer Rose, the latter at least six months pregnant with Ruby and Remy.
'I hope Remy can handle the responsibility, Summer.'
City of Patch, Coral Quay
The group of five made their way towards the main docks of Patch, where there was a constant bustle of ship and sailors, Pyra could only stare out in amazement at the activity.
'A lot has certainly changed in 500 years.' Pyra thought as the Rose-Xiao Long siblings looked around the quay feverishly for their guest.
"Where's Gramps? I thought he'd be here by now." Ruby asked, a look of concern present on her face, while she was simultaneously bouncing on the balls of her feet.
"I think he might be somewhere just outside of the quay." Qrow answered, always nervous whenever he's around the quay. "We should-" The elder Huntsman was about to add, before an explosion went off just outside the walls of the town.
"Can we NOT, seriously?!" Remy shouted, as the Patch militia was quick to rush to the town's defense, gunfire sounding off. "We gonna help them?" The young Driver asked, his hand resting on the hilt of Pyra's sword, looking at his uncle. But before the older man could answer, a group of pirates roughly docked, the port side of their ship grinding against the railing with a *SCREECH* a group of 20 said pirates, dressed like a biker gang, instead of stereotypical swashbucklers, disembarked, brandishing a mixture of swords, axes, tridents, and rolling pins.
"ALLRIGHT BOYOS! IT'S RAIDING TIME! TIME TO RACK 'EM UP!" The man Pyra assumed was the captain shouted, his crew yelling in affirmative, charging into the quay, knocking over stalls and stands. seven of them immediately took notice of Remy and the others.
"Well, woulda look at this, boys?" The pirate asked his cronies, "Looks like we've got ourselves a genuine Huntsman!" He added, to the jeers of his crewmates. "And a rather infamous one, too! It's Qrow Branwen!" His eyes later moved from Qrow to Pyra, Ruby and Yang. "And it looks like there are a few, delectable choices for the big man back home." He said with a perverted sneer. Qrow's eyes narrowing in barely-contained anger at the way the pirate was looking at his nieces.
"Oh, HELL no." Yang exclaimed, her face turning green.
"Yeah, these guys are toast." Remy muttered, drawing Pyra's sword, the weapon igniting. "Guess we've got no choice but to fight." The Driver added, as two of the pirates charged at the group, Remy and Pyra rushing to intercept them. "DOUBLE SPINNING EDGE!" Remy shouted, swinging the Aegis sword twice, knocking the first pirate on his ass, Pyra simultaneously kicking the other pirate with a roundhouse, knocking him into a building.
"What the-?!" A third pirate exclaimed, before Ruby, using Crescent Rose, kicked the pirate with both of her feet, sending him flying into the same building as the second pirate. Yang tackling the fourth pirate, using an axe kick to knock his ass out. Meanwhile, Qrow leapt at pirates five, six, and seven. Swinging Harbinger, Qrow knocked down the remaining three pirates. Then, the area was rocked by another explosion, nearly knocking the group of five off their feet.
"What was that?!" Ruby shouted, as the pirate's ship exploded, sinking to the bottom of the quay. Amidst the smoke of the burning pirate ship, came what some would describe as a white dragon.
"I-is that a brothers-damned TITAN?!" The lead pirate yelled, as said Titan turned its head towards the pirate captain. Its eyes narrowing slightly.
"Young man, I would recommend you cease this ridiculous foolishness before I unleash an, unpleasantness upon you." The Titan said, as the remaining pirates were quickly rounded up by the local militia and Huntsmen.
"GRAMPS!" Ruby yelled, running up to the Titan, or "Gramps" as she called him. "Wewerelookingeverywhereforyou-" Ruby began to say at super-speed, before being yanked back by her hood by Remy. "Ow! Ack! REMY!"
"Nice timing, Azurda. Glad you showed up when you did." One of the militia troops said, removing her helmet, and wiping some sweat off her brow.
'Wait, "Gramps" is Azurda? Didn't know he was still alive.' Pyra thought, as the 20 pirates were placed in the quay's jailhouse.
"It was a good thing I was stopping by, anyway." The Titan, Azurda replied with a warm chuckle. "It is good to see you as well, Ruby. How have your studies at Signal been going?" The Titan asked, the question equally directed at Remy and Yang. Then, he laid his eyes on Pyra, and for the briefest of moments, the old Titan was surprised.
"Uh, is everything OK, Gramps?" Yang asked, causing Azurda to snap his head back to Yang.
"Yes, everything's all right, Yang." Azurda chuckled, "However, perhaps we should take our conversation somewhere, private, yes?" The Titan added, moving his left wing in such a way that allowed the group of five to climb aboard his body. With all five of his passengers ready, Azurda made his way to open waters, so to speak, moving along the northern part of the island, towards Summer's gravestone.
"Hey Gramps, Uncle Qrow said that you had something for me, from Uncle Rex?" Remy asked, causing the Titan to chuckle slightly at the young teen's impatience.
"Yes, yes. It's in the cramped shack that your Uncle Rex referred to as his 'home.' It's located beneath his bed." Azurda replied, and Remy rushed inside and found a rusted container, almost like a lunchbox used by industrial workers. Bringing the container outside, Remy set it down and opened the container, unveiling what looked like a wrist-mounted grappling hook.
"What the heck is this thing?" Ruby asked, as Remy held the device up for everyone to see. The grappling hook-esque gadget was blue in coloration.
"That, dear Ruby, was your Uncle Rex's anchor, which he used during his days as a salvager." Azurda replied, causing the eyes of Remy, Ruby and Yang to practically bulge out of their sockets, much to Qrow's amusement. "It can attach to your wrist, Remy, and with it, you can cause opponents to be tripped up, allowing for a successive attack." The Titan added, causing Remy's already dinner plate-sized eyes to get somehow bigger. "Your Uncle Rex, after you and your sister were born, left this for you, for the day you were ready." Azurda finished, as Remy had strapped it to his left arm.
"Uncle Rex..." Remy whispered in awe, looking at the anchor, the last memento of his uncle, whom some have said that Remy slightly resembles. In truth, Remy doesn't remember the Leftherian all that well, but with the anchor, Remy feels slightly closer to his Uncle. "I'll try and not wreck this gift, Gramps." Remy finally said, making the old Titan chuckle slightly.
"I have no doubt that you will take good care of it, Remy. Within you and your sisters, resides great potential." Azurda wistfully said, as he finally made it to the cliff that housed Summer's gravestone, Azurda, extending one of his wings, allowing the group of five to disembark easier. "It's been awhile since I was last here." Azurda added, his tone growing somber. "I am relieved that she's got the sky and the clouds above her. I'd have hated to see her entombed inside Vale's rather, cramped public mausoleums." The veteran Huntsman, the three Signal students, and the Aegis, walking up to the gravestone of Summer Rose, the words, "Thus Kindly, I Scatter" showing crystal clear in the setting sun. Remy was the first to kneel in front of the large stone marker.
"Hey, mom... I know I JUST visited you last night, but I wasn't, in a great headspace." Remy began, slightly fidgeting with Rex's, no, his anchor. "I wanted to let you know that, I resonated with a Blade! Her name's Pyra, and she's amazing. She's a Fire Blade, who's cooking is OUT OF THIS WORLD." Remy passionately added, as he told a quick recap of how he resonated with Pyra. He finished, by motioning Pyra over, the Blade walking up to the gravestone. "Mom, this is Pyra, Pyra, my mom, Summer Rose." Pyra took the hint, and kneeled herself.
"Um, h-hello, my name's Pyra. And, like Remy said, I'm his Blade." Pyra said nervously, not exactly sure what to say. "Look, I have, absolutely no Idea what to say, except this: as Remy's Blade, I will do absolutely ANYTHING to help Remy achieve his dream." Pyra added, her face becoming pensive. 'Even if it means lying about who I actually am.' Pyra thought, standing up, and walking away with Remy, as Ruby and Yang began to explain the excitement at the quay.
After about an hour, with Qrow and Azurda recapping the events of the last week, Remy and company said goodbye to Azurda, as the Titan returned to the Cloud Sea, the group of five made their way back towards the Rose-Xiao Long home, Remy giving a quick look back at Summer's gravestone with a solemn expression.
'I promise not to let you down, Mom.' Remy said to himself, turning back towards the others, head held high, as his path as both a Driver, and a Huntsman, now seemed clearer than ever.
Chapter 2:
Dockside Reunions
Oh my God, I am SO SORRY! I meant for this to come out MUCH sooner than I did, but I got sucked into replaying Batman: Arkham Knight. That, and I didn't exactly had the motivation to write. So, apparently, there's some kind of e-mail fuckery right now, so I hope people see this. Anyway, next chapter is when the main storyline of RWBY starts! Hopefully I can actually get the next chapter out on time. Until then, don't forget to like, follow, review, and be good people!
