It was a chaotic scene in the town square, as Lottie walked Candy from Dr. Wright's office to the church. The bodies of the two gunmen were covered with sheets, while groups of people gathered and animatedly talked about what had just happened. Someone was running from building to building, letting people know what had transpired and that it was safe to come out now.
Biddie and some of the other ladies were standing on the porch of the dormitory, many with hands to their faces in shocked disbelief. Biddie spotted Lottie shepherding Candy towards the church.
"Candy! Candy! What happened? Is Jeremy all right?"
Candy stopped, looked back at Biddie, and burst into tears. Lottie wrapped her arm around Candy's shoulders, turned her back toward the church, and kept Candy walking. She called out to Biddie over her shoulder, "Biddie, bring all the girls to the church! We have some praying to do!"
Lottie helped Candy up the church steps and guided her to the pew at the very front of the church. Candy collapsed in her arms, sobbing.
Lottie let her cry a few moments, stroked her hair, and pulled a handkerchief from her pocket. She gently pushed Candy away a little so she could see her face. She dabbed the streams of tears that marked Candy's face, and then wiped the blood from her temple. It was indeed just a scratch and had stopped bleeding. No stitches or bandage was necessary. The bigger wound was in Candy's heart right now.
"Lottie, I can't lose him! I can't lose Jeremy! I just can't!"
Lottie took both of Candy's hands in her own. Her face was only a few inches from Candy's face.
"Candy, what Jeremy needs right now is ALL of your strength and ALL your prayers. All of OUR prayers." Lottie gestured to all the ladies that had come with Biddie from the dormitory.
Biddie sat down on the other side of Candy and put her arms around Candy. Lottie stood up and turned around to face all the women in the church.
"Ladies, Jeremy was gravely injured by those robbers. You know Dr. Wright is gone right now to help the folks in Edmonds. So, we don't have a doctor to help him." Her voice broke as she spoke the last few words. She took a deep breath to strengthen her determination.
"Now, I know some of you don't care for Harry Smith because of his history. Well, his "history" is what we need right now. You've heard how he's made some mistakes in his life. Well, who HASN'T made mistakes? I certainly have. Everyone has a past." Lottie looked at each of the women, some of them hanging their heads in shame.
"What you may NOT know is that Harry has Medical training. No, he's not a doctor, but he knows a lot more than any of us about how to help Jeremy and I trust him. Now, Aaron's gone to get Rachel to help with any surgery she and Harry determine Jeremy might need. But right now I need you all to have trust and faith in Harry. And I need you all to pray for both Jeremy AND Harry."
"I'd bet my life on Harry," Candy mumbled.
"What, Candy?" Biddie asked.
Candy lifted her chin up, her face tear-stained but determined. "It's something Jeremy told me earlier today. He'd said he'd bet his life on Harry. So if Jeremy can put his faith and trust in Harry, then I can, too."
And with that, each and every bride from the dormitory bowed their heads, and prayed for a miracle.
