A/N-these darn plot bunnies….

"At what point are you going to tell me what's going on?" Bella asked Edward grumpily. She really hated surprises, a fact she was always very vocal about, and he knew that.
"I'm shocked you haven't figured it out yet." Edward threw a mocking smile in her direction.
Bella's breath caught in her throat. Would she ever get used to his perfection?
"I did mention you look very nice, didn't I?"
"Yes." Edward grinned again.
Bella had never seen him dress in black before, and, with the contrast against his pale skin, his beauty was off the charts. That much she couldn't deny, even if the fact he was wearing a tuxedo made her very nervous.
Not quite as nervous as the dress. Or the shoe. Only one shoe, as her other foot was still securely encased in plaster. But the stiletto heel, held on only by satin ribbons, certainly wasn't going to help her hobble around. She had made a heated protest when Alice had slipped the dainty shoe on her foot, but the little psychic had ignored her qualms, citing she would see in advance if the offending piece of footwear caused any trouble.
"I'm not coming over anymore if Alice is going to treat me like Guinea Pig Barbie when I do." Bella griped.
She had spent the best part of the day in Alice's staggeringly vast bathroom, a helpless victim as she played hairdresser and cosmetician. Whenever she fidgeted or complained, Alice guilt tripped her, reminding Bella sadly that she didn't have any memories of being human, and pleaded with her not to ruin her vicarious fun. Then she dressed Bella in the most ridiculous dress imaginable. It was horrendous-deep blue (picked because blue was Edward's favorite color), frilly and off the shoulders, with French tags that Bella couldn't read. She felt like one of those toilet-roll dolls that were fashionable in the mid twentieth century. They were designed for ladies crafting and had tie-holes in their bases.
Bella knew that nothing good could come from this formal attire, of that, she was sure. She was distracted then by the sound of a phone ringing. Edward pulled his cell phone from a pocket inside his jacket, looking briefly at the caller ID before answering.
"Hello, Chief Swan." He said warily.
"Charlie?" Bella frowned, wondering why her father would be calling Edward at this time.
Charlie had been difficult since her return to Forks. He had compartmentalized her bad experience into two defined reactions. Toward Carlisle he was almost worshipfully grateful. On the other hand, he was stubbornly convinced that Edward was at fault- because-if not for him, she wouldn't have left home in the first place. These days she had rules that hadn't existed before: curfews…visiting hours.
Something Charlie was saying made Edward grimace. "Of course, I'll pass the phone to Bella right now, sir." He said in an overly polite tone.
Bella took the phone cautiously, placing it next to her ear. "Dad, its me. Is anything wrong?"
"No." Charlie was curt. "Are you there yet?"
"There?" Bella glanced sideways at Edward. His mouth was pulled down in a grim line as he stared out at the gloomy weather through the car's windshield. "As the destination has been kept secret, I have no idea where there is."
A muffled exclamation came through from the other end of the phone.
"Dad, are you okay?"
"I'm fine." Charlie muttered. "The whole thing is ridiculous. I thought he would have told you by now he's taking you to your prom."
Bella's neck and face flushed crimson with anger. She could feel the rage-induced tears starting in her eyes. "I've got to go, Dad." She said through gritted teeth, then hung up before Charlie had a chance to tell her why he was calling in the first place.
Edward looked across at her, his expression wary. He had overheard everything of course.
"You're taking me to the prom!" Bella exploded.
It was so embarrassingly obvious now. If she had been paying any attention at all, she was sure she would have noticed the date on the posters that decorated the school buildings. But Bella had never dreamed that Edward would go against her wishes and subject her to her worst nightmare. Didn't he know her at all?
Edward wasn't prepared for the force of her reaction. He pressed his lips together in irritation. "Don't be difficult, Bella." He said, scolding her as one would a disobedient child.
Bella's eyes flashed to the window; they were halfway to the school already.
"Why are you doing this to me, Edward?" She whispered, blinking back tears. "You know I didn't want to go to prom. I told you over and over. If I had known that was where you were taking me tonight, I would not have come."
Edward gestured toward his tuxedo. "Honestly, Bella, what did you think we were doing?"
"I don't know. I thought it might have been some special occasion-some anniversary that was important to your family…" Bella's voiced tailed off as the angry tears skated over her chilled skin. She felt utterly mortified for missing the obvious. "Oh, damn!" She mumbled in dismay, forgetting that she was wearing mascara. She wiped quickly under her eyes to prevent any smudges. Her fingers came away clean, it seemed Alice, in her foresight, had known to use waterproof makeup.
"You are being completely ridiculous. Why are you crying?" Edward demanded in frustration.
"Because I'm mad!"
"Bella." Edward turned the full force of his scorching golden eyes on her as he gave her the benefit of his most persuasive smile. "Humor me, please." He insisted.
Bella looked away, already she could feel her fury melting away under his charm offensive. She sighed, giving in with poor grace, knowing it was pointless fighting the inevitable. There was no brave knight going to ride out of the darkness on his white charger and rescue her now, no matter how she longed for it. This wasn't a scene out of a romantic novel. This was real life. So, she may as well make the best of it.
"Fine." She mumbled disconsolantly. "You win."
"Bella." Edward chided her again. "You are making too big a deal of this."
Bella hated that he scolded her like a child. She pouted, knowing that it would irritate him further. She knew it was petty, but she couldn't help it. If he was going to treat her like a child, she might as well act like one.
Edward sighed, his patience clearly wearing thin.
"I'll go quietly." Bella complained in response. "But you'll see. I'm way overdue for more bad luck. I'll probably break my other leg. Look at this shoe! It's a death trap!" She held out her good leg as evidence.
Edward stared at her leg longer than was necessary. "Remind me to thank Alice for that tonight."
"Alice is going to be there?"
"With Jasper, and Emmet… and Rosalie." Edward admitted.
Bella gaped at Edward in horror. There had been no progress with Rosalie, though she was on quite good terms with her sometimes-husband. Emmet enjoyed having her around-he thought her bizarre human reactions were hilarious…or maybe it was because she fell down a lot that he found so funny. Rosalie acted as if she didn't exist.
While she shook her head to dispel her disquiet, Bella suddenly thought of Charlie's phone call. She had cut him off before he could get to the point. "I wonder what he wanted." She thought to herself.
They were at the school now, so there was no chance to call him back and apologize for cutting him off. Bella saw Rosalie's red convertible in the parking lot. The clouds were thin in the sky for once, allowing a few streaks of sunlight to escape far away in the west.
Edward got out of the car and walked around to open Bella's door. He held out his hand.
Feeling stubborn, she remained rigid in her seat, arms folded, feeling a secret twinge of smugness. The lot was crowded with people in formal dress: witnesses. He couldn't remove her forcibly from the car as he might have if they had been alone.
"Bella, please stop with these childish games."
Bella frowned, irked by his superior attitude. "Well, if you insist on treating me like one…" She pointed out, pausing when he released another impatient sigh. "Okay, I'm coming." She said quickly, not wanting to push him too far.
"There now." Edward immediately cheered up, knowing he had won her over. "It won't be so bad." He leaned down and wrapped one arm around her waist. Bella took his other hand and let him lift her out of the car.
Edward kept his arm tightly around Bella, supporting her weight as she limped toward the school.
In Pheonix, they held proms in hotel ballrooms. This dance was in the gym, of course. It was probably the only room in town big enough for a dance. When she got inside, Bella looked with distaste at the balloon arches and twisted garlands of pastel crepe paper festooning the walls. It reminded her of the horror film Carrie and she shuddered.
"Are you cold?" Edward asked solicitously, mistaking the shiver for something else.
"No." Bella mumbled.
Looking toward the dance floor, Bella noticed a wide gap had formed in the center of the floor, where two couples whirled gracefully. The other dancers pressed to the side of the room to give them space – no one wanted to stand in contrast to such radiance. Emmet and Jasper were intimidating and flawless in classic tuxedos. Alice was striking in a black satin dress with geometric cutouts that bared large triangles of her snowy white skin. And Rosalie was…well, Rosalie. She was beyond belief. Her vivid scarlet dress was backless, tight to her calves where it flared into a wide, ruffled train, with a neckline that plunged to her waist. Bella pitied every girl in the room, herself included.
Edward bought their tickets, then tugged Bella toward the dance floor. She cringed against him, dragging her feet.
"Edward, I'd rather not." She whispered.
"I've got all night." Edward whispered back.
Eventually he towed her out to where his family were holding court. He smiled, placing Bella's arms around his neck, he lifted her, sliding his feet underneath hers. And then they were whirling just like the rest of his family.
"I feel like I'm five years old." Bella complained, her face scarlet from all the watching eyes.
"You may have been acting like a five-year-old tonight, but you don't look it." Edward's attempt at humor fell flat as Bella glared up at him in annoyance.
"As I said before, what do you expect? If you treat me like a child, I will act like one."
Alice caught Bella's eye on a turn and smiled in encouragement- Bella just glared back, still feeling highly irritated with the little psychic for dressing her in such a horrific dress. She returned her attention to Edward, only to find him staring toward the doors, and his face was angry.
"What is it?" Bella asked curiously, wondering what had him all riled up suddenly. She followed the direction of his gaze, disorientated by all the spinning, until finally she registered what was bothering him. Jacob Black, not in a tux, but in a long-sleeved white shirt and tie, his black, silky hair arranged in perfect disarray, was striding confidently across the floor toward them.
As hard as she tried not to, Bella continued to gape at Jacob. This was not the sweet-faced boy she had flirted with on the beach all those months ago. No, this Jacob was a much more mature, hardened individual. It was like he had changed overnight. He towered over the other students as he approached, his face a calm mask, as if he was trying to keep his emotions in check.
Bella noticed the faces of her classmates in the background. She saw how their eyes widened as they took in all six foot seven inches of Jacob's long body, muscled up the way ordinary teen should be at his age. She saw their eyes rake over his white shirt, which did little to conceal the bulging muscles underneath. Their eyes didn't linger on his face-something about his expression had them glancing away quickly. And she noticed the wide berth everyone was giving him, the bubble of space that no one dared to encroach on.
With a sense of astonishment Bella realized that Jacob looked dangerous to them. He looked every inch the Alpha male. Bella broke out into a sweat just looking at him. What had happened to him since the last time she had seen him? The changes were so drastic that it threw her through a loop.
Edward snarled very quietly, startling Bella out of her introspection.
"What's going on?" She whispered frantically.
Edward's response was scathing. "He's come here for you."
Jacob reached them then. He stared malevolently at Edward, no hint of embarrassment or apology in his eyes.
"Bella." He said in greeting, acknowledging her with a subtle nod of his head.
"Hi, Jacob." Bella said warily. "What's up?"
Jacob looked toward Edward, his eyes narrowing. "He knows."
"What?" Bella glanced at Edward's face. His expression may be composed, but the fire in his eyes said otherwise.
"Let's dance." Jacob put his hands on Bella's waist. She could feel the burn from the touch of his fingers even through the thin material of her dress. He was so hot. It was like he was running a fever, but his skin remained smooth and perspiration free. How odd.
Edward didn't even try to stop Jacob taking her away from him. There were too many curious eyes looking his way for him to kick up a fuss.
Bella didn't know what to do, so decided to go with the flow. She reached up and rested her hands lightly on Jacob's broad shoulders. "Wow, Jake, you've had a growth spurt. How tall are you now?"
"Six-seven." Jacob whisked her further away from Edward. For a boy of his size, he was surprisingly graceful.
They weren't really dancing-Bella's leg made that impossible. They swayed from side to side, with Jacob easily supporting her weight.
"So, how did you end up here tonight?" Bella asked curiously.
"Charlie called Billy. Billy called me. So here I am. It seems the old men felt like you might need rescuing."
Bella's eyes opened wide as she remembered her thought from earlier- about the knight riding in on his white charger, coming to rescue her from a fate worse than death: dancing at prom. It was so surreal that she began to laugh, but stopped when Jacob's expression remained deadly serious.
"You're not joking, are you?"
"No."
"Is that why my dad called earlier, wanting to know if I had arrived yet?"
"Maybe." Jacob answered cryptically. He glanced down at her shocked gaze for a second, a slow smile taking over his face. "You look real pretty by the way…but that dress is so not you."
Bella couldn't disagree with that. "Um…thanks." She mumbled.
"You're welcome." Jacob leaned his head close to hers; she felt the brush of his lips against the lobe of her ear, the soothing sensation of his warm breath ghosting across her skin. "Are you ready to go now?"
Bella's eyes popped open wider. "I can't just leave." She whispered. "It may not be my idea of a fun night, but I can't just abandon Edward. I – "
"I know he's a vampire, Bella." Jacob's tone was laced with steel as he whispered the words in her ear. She immediately stiffened, her whole body turning rigid. "Now, you can come quietly, or if not, I'm not averse to throwing you over my shoulder and carrying you out of here. Your choice, Bella, honey."
"You wouldn't dare!" Bella hissed. Glancing around him, she saw Edward standing against the wall, watching her face, his hands clenched into fists at his sides. Any minute he would intervene, she was sure of it. "You'd attract too much attention to yourself, Jacob. You wouldn't want that."
Jacob smiled smugly, glancing around at all the curious onlookers. "It's a bit late for that."
"Edward would stop you!"
"Not with all those eyes on him, he wouldn't. His kind don't like to attract too much attention."
Bella flinched at the animosity in his tone. "Jacob, please, I'm asking you nicely. Don't make a scene."
"I'm sorry, Bella." Jacob apologized, though he didn't really sound as if he meant it. "My old man was suspicious when you got hurt down in Pheonix. He didn't believe…" He hesitated; his eyes boring into hers. "I didn't believe the bullshit excuse that was given to Charlie about your injuries."
Bella felt her skin burn, the red flush giving her away. "I fell." She said shakily.
Jacob's eyes narrowed. "We both know that not true."
"You think Edward had something to do with me getting hurt?"
"Yes."
"Its not true!" Bella denied. "Look, Jacob, you and Billy probably won't believe this, but just so you know"- Jacob looked at her, his expression disbelieving- "Edward really did save my life. If it weren't for Edward and his father. I'd be dead."
Jacob flicked a hostile gaze in Edward's direction. "You're right, Bella. I don't believe you. So, are you coming quietly? Or do I have to carry you out of here?"
It sounded like something from a mafia movie. Bella laughed out loud, not convinced Jacob would follow through with his threat.
She was wrong.
Suddenly her world was turned upside down as Jacob lifted her easily, hauling her over his shoulder, he strode confidentially out of the gym, the gaping crowd of students quickly stepping back and clearing a path for him. Bella was too disoriented and shocked to do anything but gasp for breath. The last thing she saw was Edward, surrounded by his family, his expression livid, darting across the room to follow them outside.
A/N-thanks for reading! Now I can sleep, LOL
