Worst of Evil -Episode 13
Synopsis
Set in Seoul in the 1990s, a former DJ Jung Gi Cheul starts selling a new powerful drug nicknamed "Gangnam Crystal" in city nightclubs after masterminding a bloody takeover of another gangster organization. Since the police know little about the origin of such drugs and how it's spreading throughout the city at such a rapid pace. In order to crack down on this rampant drug trafficking organization, narcotics chief Seok Do Hyung recruits a childhood friend who is now a rural police officer Park Jun Mo.
Office Park Jun Mo has the temperament and street smarts to that will allow him to infiltrate the street gang that now controls the drug trafficking. With his father as a convicted drug user and offender Jun Mo has become stagnated in his position without any hope for promotion along with the continuous belittling by his wife's police hierarchy family. He makes a deal with the Chief Prosecutor Cho Chang Sik ...that if he infiltrates the gang and brings them to justice he will be given a two level promotion.
He immediately gets the attention of Jung Gi Cheul …..showing his prowess in street fighting by beating up six or more gang members….Rising through the gangs ranks and getting his share injuries he is surprised to discover that his wife, Yu Eui Jeong , also a detective, has volunteered to participate in this dangerous mission. She convinced Jun Mo superiors that she needs to go undercover to help her husband since she had an romantic history in the past with the heinous underground drug king.
Park Jun Mo in this drug-related mission, not only does he wholeheartedly fight the drug cartel, but also works hard to protect his wife's safety at all times. However, he faces further obstacles as the Chinese manufacturer of the drug sends Lee Hae Ryeon the very beautiful and alluring daughter of the Chinese drug pin Lee Oson to Korea to negotiate a new trade deal that involves not only Korea but also the Japanese. Lee Hae Ryeon takes an instant licking to Jun Mo creating even more complications as Jung Gi Cheul wants to woo and love Yu Eui Jung not knowing she is the wife of Jun Mo.
The 12 episodes that this series brought to the screen allowed the viewers to experience the transformation of Park Jun Mo posing as Kwon Seung Ho from the street cop with no hope to the brutal but ever confident drug lord Kwon Seung Ho. The ironic twist had to be that Jung Gi Cheul whose dream was to achieve legal status in order to be accepted by Yu Eui Jeong's police family, however using the worst of evil to get get there only sealed his fate.
Episode 12 brought to light many of the problems the four main leads had to endure especially when their true identities were revealed. When the corrupt police detective Hwang Min Goo discovered that Kwon Seung Ho was in fact the real Park Jun Mo he immediately assumed that Lee Hae Ryeon would be so infuriated by his betrayal that she would easily hand him over to him to get her revenge…. Turns out to be the worst assumption he ever made as we see from his dialogue with Lee Hae Ryeon in the middle of episode 12.
Hwang Min Goo: Kwon Seung Ho…that bastard is Park Jun Mo…. He shows her the photo of Jun Mo and Eui Jeong together with the caption Senior Police Officer Park Jun Mo from Eum Song Police Station….you've been fooled this whole time…just tell me where he is right now and I'll go and put him in handcuffs right now….We're on the same side….you know…..Even though he is a cop…..what he's done while undercover is enough….to make him rot in prison for life
Lee Hae Ryeon though startled and somewhat dazed by the truth has a flashback of what Jo Kang San her trusted body guard told her Jo Kang San: If by any chance this deal falls apart too, your father won't just sit back and watch.
Lee Hae Ryeon makes a phone call while Min Goo continues to stuff his fat face
Lee Hae Ryeon : Hi it's me….. Hae Ryeon
Seung Ho / Jun Mo : Hi Hae Ryeon … I was just about to call you actually…..we're leaving now…..Don't worry to much…..It'll be all right.
Lee Hae Ryeon: Can I ask you something? ….. you've been kind to me this whole time….Did you mean it?
Seung Ho/Jun Mo: What?….. That's such a random
Lee Hae Ryeon: Answer me….Did you mean it?
The producer to get a little more drama into the scene breaks away from that conversation and returns to Hwang Min Goo
Hwang Min Goo: Did you think about it?
Lee Hae Ryeon: If I tell you were Kwon Seung Ho is…you will really do what you say you'll do.
Hwang Min Goo: Come on!….of course I will….Hey, Kwon Seung Ho ….No ….Park Jun Mo….I'll take care of it before he ever finds out.
Lee Hae Ryeon: You know what ….I'm getting sick of this business too….
The scene shifts back to her conversation with Seung Ho/ Jun Mo
Lee Hae Ryeon: My father called ….he wants me to come back too….What should I do?….Should I go back to Chang Chun or should I stay in Korea?
Seung Ho/ Jun Mo: You See …..Hae Ryeon … Don't stay in Korea or China….Until this whole thing ends…..I think you should stay in Hong Kong.
The next scene has a Hae Ryeon whose face is scattered in blood sitting in a chair disoriented and listless….. while Hwang Min Goo whose neck has been stabbed lays there bleeding out.
Jo Kang San comes rushing in
Jo Kang San: What happened…..why did you do this?
Lee Hae Ryeon: You see there is someone I want to protect in my heart.
Jo Kang San: There's a cop outside….Did you forget this …cops always work in pairs…..I'll take care of this ….you should leave….I'll lure him away…before their backup arrive….. Shaking her to let her get her composure ….Lee Hae Ryeon…..Get it together….Listen to me….Don't go to China….once they find out you messed this up….you won't be safe.
Lee Hae Ryeon: Why?
Jo Kang San: This is who we are… You must survive…no matter what and then …..go back to the man that you trust.
This whole scenario showed the depth of Hae Ryeon's love for Jun Mo… with Jun Mo torn between his wife and this woman that has just killed dirty cop to protect him... The ensuing scenes bring more clarity into the quagmire of the love quadrangle of the four main leads.
Once the police of the three countries begin rounding up all the drug participants and Jun Mo made the decision to give Jung Gi Cheul one last chance to start a new life by leaving the keys in the car it starts the inevitable show down between the three . It begins with Eli Jeong and Jun Mo returning to there home Yu Eui Jeong: Do you think we could go back to who we were?
The answer to that became very clear once they entered their home and were confronted by Jung Gi Cheul…..With a gun pointed at them while Jun Mo instinctively pulled out his creating a stand off between the two former friends
Jung Gi Cheul: You two look great together.
Yu Eui Jeong: Don't make any more wrong decisions.
Jung Gi Cheul: To protect the two of you …..I let go of everyone else….that really was a wrong decision.
Jun Mo pointing his gun back at Gi Cheul: That's not true at all…all the decisions you made were just wrong decisions….so drop the gun …..drop the gun now!
Jung Gi Jeong: Let me ask you one thing…why did you let me go….Why?….What about you Eli Jeong?….Were you ever genuine with me?….Did you use me….just for the investigation?
Yu Eui Jeong: hether I was genuine or not….doesn't change anything… Gi Jeong…..I thought the best I could do was to stop you from committing any more crimes.
Jung Gi Cheul: I may be a sinner but you used my trust to deceive me…Isn't that a sin too.
Yu Eui Jeong: It is and we'll definitely have to pay for it …if not in while we are alive, then after death.
Jung Gi Cheul: You'll have to pay for it while you're alive … for the rest of your lives …you will never be happy…..
He moves the gun to his forehead and Jun Mo fires with that motion and kills him. Jun Mo sees Yu Eui Jeong rushing to Gi Cheul as he lays dying. ….pleading for him not to final scenes of the series with Seok Do Hyung widow along with Yu Eui Jeong and Jun Mo receiving service valor awards from Prosecutor Cho Chung Sik. What was telling was that Jun Mo didn't even look at Eui Jeong and refused to shake Prosecutor Cho hand.
The grave yard scene whereby Jun Mo goes to the grave and lights up a cigarette for his friend however when he sees the flowers with the necklace that Eui Jeong had saved all those years … he places his wedding band next to it and walks away
Though the ending was ambiguous the story needs greater clarification between Jun Mo and Eui Jeong as to why they are distant towards each other and what will happen between Jun Mo and Hae Ryeong as to where they go from here…. Episode 13 should provide greater clarity and a proper ending.

Lieutenant Park Jun Mo visits Jo Kang San
Park Jun Mo: I'm here to inform you that you will be released….Detective Go admitted that he didn't see you kill Detective Hwang Min Goo and their is no evidence tying you to Donghobang …. You are free to go.
Jo Kang San: What about Hae Ryeon is she being sought ?…. you know Boss Oson will have her killed if he finds her…. She risked everything for you.
Park Jun Mo: Do you know where she could be….. I told her not to go back to China and not stay here…. But to go to Hong Kong… You know her better than I do .
Jo Kang San: Why do you need to know? …. She's made herself vulnerable when it comes to you….. will you protect her from here on out… she certainly protected you by killing that fat fuck.
Park Jun Mo: As far as Prosecutor Cho is concerned she was a confidential informant…there are no warrants for her arrest…. But I need to find her…. So if you know where she can be tell me.
Jo Kang San tells him of her safe house that she has in Hong Kong forcing him to make a decision does he go to her or not?
Yu Eui Jeong asks to talk to him since he hasn't returned home.
Yu Eui Jeong: Jun Mo… can we talk? …. you've been treating me like a stranger and I don't understand why?…. Can you come home so that we hash this out?
Park Jun Mo enters their once loving apartment filled with pictures of their wedding, but Jun Mo only sees the flashback of the standoff between the three.
Yu Eui Jeong: Are you hungry… I fixed dinner?
Park Jun Mo: I've already eaten….. what do you want to talk about?
Yu Eui Jeong: Why are you doing this to us….I still love you?….. I don't want us to be apart!
Park Jun Mo: You asked if we could ever return to the way we were….. I've thought a lot about that….. Eui Jeong….. answer me truthfully…. If Gi Cheul had the opportunity to change himself and was no longer the gangster that he was ….. would you have gone to him….. he occupied a place in your heart that you have never been able to let go of.
Yu Eui Jeong: How can you say that….. I married you…. I loved you….. as far as this investigation I was doing my job just like you were.
Park Jun Mo: You were doing your job…. What was your job….. to distract Gi Cheul…. Everyone saw how much in love he was with you…. So what was your job?…. he announced to everyone that you would be his future wife… which turned everyone against him and jeopardized the entire operation. So I ask what was your job…. Did you have to kiss him?….Did you have to sleep with him? ….. did he bring back all the old memories of when you first fell in love with him?
Yu Eui Jeong: Do you think it was easy for me to see you with that Chinese woman laying claim to you….. Let me ask you the same questions you asked of me….. Did you kiss her….. did you fuck her….. Do you love her… that's why your abandoning me?
Park Jun Mo: Eui Jeong… who abandoned who?…. I shot Gi Cheul to save you from the guilt of seeing his suicide, but what did you do instead of rushing to your husband you rushed to him hoping he wouldn't die. Whatever trust that was between us is broken… how can we ever return to a marriage without trust… It's probably best that we make a clean break….. your family never accepted me….I was always a stain on your family's honor… your mother was the only one that truly liked me and I will always remember her for her kindness to me.
Yu Eui Jeong: what are you saying…. You just want to divorce me…. Jun Mo I don't want that…. What can I do to make you trust me again.
Park Jun Mo: I think it's best we stay apart…. Right now I don't even know if I want to remain a police officer… I did this just to gain acceptance in your family….. I'm no longer that person…. I need to find my own way and what will make me happy.
Yu Eui Jeong: Are you going to that woman?
Park Jun Mo: I haven't decided yet….. I've signed the divorce documents… I'll leave them with you and you can determine what you want to do with them…. I'm going to take an extended leave of absence so that I can find who I want to be from here on out.
Though this was a crushing blow to Eui Jeong she will also take a look at herself and what makes her happy.
Park Jun Mo makes use of his leave of absence and finds himself in Hong Kong and at the door of Hae Ryeon's safe house. He knocks several times but no answer….. A neighbor comes by and asks him who he is looking for
Park Jun Mo: Do you know if Lee Hae Ryeon lives here?
Neighbor: There is no one by that name that lives here.
Park Jun Mo realizing that Hae Ryeon is using a different name: By any chance do you know if the person living here is a very beautiful young Chinese girl with long black hair and she has a tendency to smoke a lot….. her eyes are almost piercing.

Lee Hae Ryeon: What does your wife say about that….. Detective Huang before he took his last breath ….. told me about your wife… Then I realized why you couldn't give me your undivided attention… you two made a good team…. She must've been real good at her job to get Gi Cheul so under her spell.
Park Jun Mo: She's probably my ex wife by now… I left her with signed divorce papers ….. she's not to happy with me.

Prosecutor Cho Chang Sik has been getting reports of new gangs starting to form that are muscling their way into taking over territories once held by Gangnam Street gang… He formulated a gang task force and asks Yu Eui Jeong to head it up since she was actively involved in the last round up.
Yu Eui Jeong begins to wonder if she will cross paths with Jun Mo because of this.
