Note: This story contains spoilers for the first game of the original Ace Attorney Trilogy - Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney as well as the bonus case included from the DS remake onwards in Rise From The Ashes. If you have not played the entire first game and Rise From The Ashes (You really should, they're absolutely amazing) then I'd advise clicking off this story to avoid spoilers. 2016, it was a year full of many ups and downs, the city of Los Angeles, California certainly was no exception. The suburb had been rocked recently with many high profile court cases, among them being one exposing corruption in the city at the hands of one company named Bluecorp and its founder Redd White. The defense attorney leading the case was one Phoenix Wright, he himself the student of Mia Fey, who tragically was murdered, the catalyst for the trial itself.
Phoenix though inexperienced showed he has heart and determination and he proved his client, Maya Fey the younger sister of Mia, to be innocent and with it brought down Redd White. But one individual seemed all but forgotten by the general public in the fallout of the court case. For Mr. White wasn't operating alone, the brutal slaying of Mia wasn't done without a plan in place, one that would've sent Maya to jail as a frame job. The accomplice was one April May, a young stunning 23 year old pink haired woman, who was the secretary of Mr. White.
April amongst other findings was in on the scheme, being an accomplice in White's plan to silence Mia Fey, to cover up his misdeeds in the city. So when Redd went down, it was only natural she too would be taken into custody, this coming following a very public outburst in the halls of justice. Though April pleaded her innocence insisting she was forced to go along with it less she faced a similar fate as Mia, the court disagreed. Regardless of reasoning or blackmail, she was an accessory to the murder and thus was arrested although on slightly less harsh charges than that of her old boss.
All this went down in September of 2016, many months ago, the city and its civilians had long since moved on, the trial forgotten to time in the wake of other much more notorious cases emerging. Throughout it all however, April had been buying her time, she did whatever she could to avoid staying behind bars, it wasn't a place befitting someone of her beauty and charm or so she thought. The young lass had tried everything in the book to get let go early, attempting to charm guards, faking injuries and playing innocent, and even dirtier tactics but none quite worked. However she need not wait too long, as despite her antics, she generally was well behaved by all accounts.
It was so that the court system granted her early release on the condition that she's on probation and is to be monitored closely for the next year, that is unless she could find someone to vouch for her otherwise. With the simple ruling adjourned, April May was released back into society, realizing not much had changed with the world during her time in confinement, though she certainly had seen change within herself. She had become far more aware of how she can't always charm her way out of everything, how actions have subsequent reactions and possibly consequences. This however didn't stop the young bombshell from being cunning and sinister, far from it. In fact the added challenge of knowing she could be caught only enhanced the thrill of putting on an act for her.
It was this mindset that led her down the path that she'd soon trek on, her plan for a ticket out of the mess she found herself in. In her eyes there was 1 person who could ensure she'd be vouched for and have her restrictions all but removed..though she knew it would likely come at a cost to her pride and maybe dignity. For April May she didn't exactly like the prospect but she felt like it was her best choice and so..she seeked out the man who caused all this, that being Phoenix Wright.
During her time in solitude, April hadn't forgotten about the dashing young prospect who hit the attorney world, by all means he was front and center. He was the first person her usual tricks and tactics didn't work on, him seemingly immune to her persuasive techniques. As much as she despised him for exposing her and leaving her to rot in jail..she couldn't help but strangely admire him and be interested in this man. He was only a year older than her yet he seemed primed for big things, and was making headlines fast. She had heard through the news and grapevine in prison about his latest escapades including solving the mystery of the supposed murder of Jack Hammer at global studios, as well as bringing down the notorious Manfred Von Karma, ending a 15 year long unsolved case.
She hated Phoenix, every fiber of her being loathed him for what he did..yet she also took some pride in seeing him bring people to justice, to her someone like a Von Karma deserved what was coming to him. She knew fully well that Phoenix Wright had grown in notoriety, he was ironically the answer to all her issues she had thought. On that fateful Sunday afternoon, fresh out of prison and after gathering her belongings and changing into fresh clothes, she set out for her journey to Wright and Co offices.
The ride there was like a blur to the sakura haired secretary turned fugitive, any background noise seemed to fade as did her usual schtick. Many other passengers on the transport bus had taken note of her, many complimenting her figure. Ordinarily for April she'd relish the attention and playfully flirt back, fooling them into thinking they had a chance, all for her personal amusement and gain. Today was different, she was hyper fixated on only 1 man: that being Phoenix Wright. She didn't care about anyone else speaking to her, she ignored everyone talking to her, the cogs in her head turning as she thought up her plan in more detail. Surely it had to work she thought, after all he may be a tough case to crack, no pun intended, but he was just like everyone else deep down..she knew he had weaknesses, and she intended to find them and use them to gain the edge she craved so much.
As she approached the door and the elevator that would lead her to the office of the person she was seeking so much, April May had reflected on her appearance. Despite how tough prison could be, she came out relatively unscathed physically, her charms may not have worked on the guards and staff but on the inmates it was like taking candy from a baby. To anyone looking on the outside, April May still would've looked like a supermodel, she had her flowing pink hair, those beautiful brown eyes, her long legs and her more out there assets on her top half stood out. Today she was wearing an outfit not too dissimilar to what she wore that fateful September day in 2016, a pink low cut top and a white skirt with high heels, though with some modifications. Her skirt was somehow impossibly shorter and her top was more exposed than before, with her cleavage far more visible and a bit of midriff going on.
Overall April wanted to ensure she showed off everything she had, determined that her unique way of attracting people and having her way wouldn't fail for a second time. Backfiring once was already a bitter pill to swallow, let alone seeking out the man who had been the one to deny her charms for help in the first place. To fall short again and possibly face more issues and the lingering thought of more time back in the slammer didn't sit well with April. So with a deep breath she gave a devious smirk, knowing she had to have the defense attorney's number on this occasion, if not..it would feel like everything she was banking on would be null and void, an outcome she couldn't afford to take. So with her confidence in place and attire set in all the right places, April pushed the button bringing the transport down as she got into the elevator, taking her upstairs to Wright and Co. Offices.
Meanwhile up in the offices, things seemed a lot more lonely and gloomy than ever before, the work space hadn't been tidied up much leaving the office looking almost vacant. Laying there across the couch of the establishment was Phoenix Wright, the lawyer absentmindedly watching TV as his thoughts raced. It had been almost half a year since Maya Fey had left to continue her spirit medium training, leaving the business feeling much quieter in soul and sound. Phoenix wouldn't admit it perhaps but Maya's absence was really felt for him, as troublesome as she sometimes could be, he couldn't deny that her positive vibes even in the most dire situations, were something he missed in her absence, alongside her willingness to keep the space tidy. Things had been slow on the case front too lately, though perhaps that was for the best in the young attorney's mind.
Phoenix had just come off of perhaps his biggest trial yet only 4 months prior, that being the damning case of Lana Skye the former chief prosecutor. As he laid back in thought about the series of events, it amazed him how he had been wrapped up in it. It was only 2 months after Maya had left, many had called him but Phoenix never answered any calls for his services, he just couldn't bring himself to. That was until he saw Ema Skye the little sister of Lana Skye who had begged Phoenix to defend her big sister. In a lot of ways Ema had reminded him of Maya, and something in him made him agree to take part in that case. Little did he know it'd be the biggest and arguably most scandalous case ever, the result of it all sending Lana Skye to prison for being an accomplice to murder, a killing carried out by the at the time chief of police: Damon Gant.
But it wasn't just this aspect that rocked the world and Phoenix, no that would be the most damning truth to be revealed in the trial. The revelation that evidence had been forged by the prosecutors to give Joe Darke the death penalty was a fact that shook everyone to their core. Phoenix could recall it vividly, the jury in an uproar, the loud noise, the judge calling for order to be restored. Phoenix could swear he never remembered any other case having as many different recess periods as that one 4 months prior had. The entire affair did a number on his psyche, and while he may have prevailed, the whole affair left him jaded and disillusioned with his line of work. Phoenix was content with relaxing for a while, unsure if he really wanted to keep going with this career path, after all he was still young, only being 24, he could still reasonably do something else if he desired. But deep down he didn't feel there was another job for him in this life at least right now. For him, he had to keep on, because he knew his late mentor, Mia Fey believed in him, he wouldn't want to let her down by giving up when things get tough. Then of course..there was one other reason, one that Phoenix still found difficult to cope with.
The young man's mind drifted as he thought back to his childhood, a particular incident in school that led him down his path, when a certain someone had inspired him. That man was prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, Phoenix's childhood best friend and his rival. The 2 faced off many times in court, even in the Lana Skye trial, and Phoenix even defended Edgeworth during the trial involving Manfred Von Karma. But as he thought about Edgeworth..a feeling of emptiness and sadness overcame him, it was only a short while after the Skye case that Edgeworth..was gone. Phoenix didn't want to think about it too deeply, the letter with bolded letters still fresh in his mind, it was all he needed, the subject still fresh and sore for him.
Soon though Phoenix was far more neutral now, remaining rather stagnant as he watched the television screen and the news airing. He wasn't thinking much, so when he heard a knock at the door, he was a bit surprised, nobody had come up here in months. He pondered who it could be, surely it wouldn't be Maya and it definitely couldn't be Ema, maybe it was someone trying to directly contact him for his services? The thought of that made him sigh but he was curious. So without much thought, Phoenix stood up from the loveseat and stretched his arms, yawning as he walked to the door, dressed in a casual white shirt and blue jeans.
Meanwhile outside the door, April May had arrived and awaited someone to open the door, she prepared herself best she could for this. Confident as she could be, April was a bit unsure, after all she knew this defense attorney was a tough cookie, but she felt more confident this time like she had learned how he operates. A few seconds later she saw the door open and Phoenix asked who was there and April remained silent yet determined so when the door fully opened, Phoenix was a bit confused. Seconds later though, he recognized her and he looked like he had seen a ghost as he stepped back in shock "Y-you?!" Phoenix had muttered, his surprise evident in his tone. April looked at him with her trademark cute smirk as she greeted him "Surprised to see me Attorney? It's been a while" she said, her voice dripping with playful seduction and a hint of venom.
Phoenix was beside himself, nobody had shown up for ages and now when someone does, it's April May? It was the last person he had expected to see show up at his place of work, he would've sooner believed Maya showing up. April looked at him, clearly amused at his expression, it was a gleeful sight seeing him off his balance for a change. With a sly voice she spoke, her voice in a low albeit flirty tone "Aren't you going to invite me in like a gentleman?" She asked, maintaining her innocent act, though she knows Phoenix can see right through it, she takes pleasure in toying with him. Phoenix, still with his tongue caught, reluctantly let her inside, normally he wouldn't indulge but he knew she had to be here for some reason, could it be she needed him to be her defense attorney for an upcoming trial?
If the latter was true, it would be the greatest irony of all, but alas that wasn't why she was here and she let him know it as she cut to the chase "Listen up 'Phoenix' or whatever your name is, I'm not here for a social visit..I need a favor" she says with determination leaving no room for argument which causes Phoenix's ears to perk up as he looks her up and down ensuring he heard her correctly "A favor, seems unusual of you miss uh..what was it June July?" he asked, confused, his memory failing him slightly. This comment riled April May up as her face dropped as her sweet innocent look changed to an almost demonic angry face, her eyelid twitching, her eyes wide and her face contorting with anger. She couldn't believe the audacity of this man "IT'S APRIL MAY YOU STUPID LAWYER, YOU DID THAT ON PURPOSE!" she barked, her voice accusatory, Phoenix though was undeterred, he merely sighed knowing this was going to be difficult.
"Right right how could I forget..miss April May, the woman who thinks she can charm the world" Phoenix said, his voice reflecting that of exhaustion and annoyance. Truth be told with the shock having worn off, he couldn't help but be annoyed, months without much contact and this is what he gets, someone must've had it out for him he thought. April though hearing his comment was in a mood to argue back, not wanting to let him get one over on her again "That's a good one, I could've sworn you were the defense attorney who thinks he's the hot shot cause he won a few cases, wow you're so amazing!" she replied in a snarky tone as she looked like she was smirking yet trying to stifle her growing animosity towards the lawyer. Phoenix rolled his eyes at her retort, knowing she was still sore about how the trial went down months ago.
However Phoenix was growing impatient, he was already unhappy about getting an unwanted visitor, but it being a hostile one was like the final straw for him as he wished she'd hurry up. "Yeah yeah..just tell me why you're here, April so you can get out of here, I know you wouldn't be here without a reason, what's this favor you require?" Phoenix asked both sounding tired yet also intrigued partially as there was a side of him that was genuinely curious what it was she needed. April sensing this was her moment to speak gave in "Right so, to put it short I as you can clearly see was released from jail for good behavior" she said confidently, a spark of relief rinsing over her as Phoenix took this in, tapping his foot "And..what does this have to do with me?" he said impatiently, clearly wanting this to end. April scoffed at his response, annoyed by his attitude "Ugh loosen up, you're always so uptight, ever heard of having a bit of fun?" April teased as she smiled and jiggled her tits in his direction just like she'd do in court.
Phoenix sighed as he saw this, clearly noting that whatever time she spent in the cell had not changed her one bit "I'll consider it when you tell me what you're doing here April.." Phoenix said with gritted teeth, no longer in the mood to play around. April could sense the growing tension so she decided to just give in and stop delaying this, although she enjoyed pushing the defense attorney's buttons. "Alright here's the deal, I was given probation and orders to be watched for a while as a condition of being released early from jail..unless" she paused, wanting to leave Phoenix in suspense so she could spring the surprise on him later. Phoenix stared at her waiting for her to finish her thought but sensing she was holding out, he sighed "Unless..what, what's the catch?" Phoenix asked, unsure where this could be headed. April smiled as she looked at him "Unless I were to have someone vouch for me to the courts and police that I don't need to be watched due to not being a threat" she said with a playful tone, trying to convey her innocence into her every word to pick at Phoenix's skin.
Phoenix gave her a raised brow look as he almost wanted to laugh at the mere prospect, but he had to admit..even he found this slightly amusing. "How fascinating..and you expect me to do this for you, why?" Phoenix asked as he tapped his finger on shoulder, his arms crossed as he looked stern. April sensed his tension and she defaulted to her cute flirty persona as she felt like she wanted to try seeing how much she could rile up the young lawyer. "Wellllllll I thought you like helping people in a jam, and I'm just a young innocent gal who needs help, surely you'd do that for little me won't you, handsome?" she said, her voice carrying a high pitch tone to give off a cute almost romantic vibe mixed in with a bit of seduction. Phoenix looked at her in response as if she were nuts as he couldn't believe this. "You have some nerve April, considering you conspired with Redd White in murdering my mentor Mia Fey and tried to get her innocent younger sister Maya Fey locked up for the murder!" Phoenix said, his eyes blazing with anger, his voice carrying a sense of venom, something rare for him.
"You caused me a lot of pain April, as well as Maya. I haven't even seen you apologize once for what you did, you may not have struck the blow to Mia..but you still had a part in it, thus the blood is still on your hands whether you like it or not" Phoenix stated rather coldly, his voice not betraying his true feelings as the hurt and anger from within him was swelling up and spilling out in the conversation. April May meanwhile could tell she was walking on eggshells in this scenario, if those shells were more like bombs that already partially went off and so she knew she had to act now. So without warning she walks up slowly to Phoenix, swaying her hips side to side seductively and lowering her zipper on her top, revealing more of her chest to the lawyer as she was now face to face with him. With a surge of confidence she grabbed his collar as she looked him straight into his eyes, her eyes those of feigned innocence mixed with devious intent. "I already told you Lawyer..I only partook in that because I had no other choice, you would've done the same in my shoes. I'm not saying what happened wasn't messed up, but I feel you're giving me the cold shoulder here..and I don't appreciate that my dear" April said while smirking as she brushed Phoenix's shoulder with her arm.
Phoenix without hesitation swatted her arm away, standing his ground as he couldn't believe she was still making excuses "Typical..I see you haven't changed a bit, never taking responsibility for your actions. I can tell them releasing you was a mistake" Phoenix said, wanting to end this confrontation and go on with his day. April however was rather angry at the way Phoenix had blown her off so coldly, it confirmed to her about how he was a jerk deep down, something she knew but it felt like everyone else denied. However..she felt she had one more weapon up her sleeve, 2 perhaps but this one was one she was more comfortable using. So without any prompting, as soon as her face turned angry, it quickly switched expressions to one of hurt as tears formed in her eyes. "B-...but that's mean..I'm sorry, I know I'm not perfect..but you're being too harsh" April said as she began fake crying, her tears free flowing as she sobbed, her cries quite audible as she occasionally sniffled "You're such a bully, you mean attorney!" she belted out, hoping he would feel bad for what he did. Phoenix however wasn't dumb, he remembered how she acted in the courts and in the detention center, so he wasn't buying this for a second. "If you're going to act sad, at least try to put effort into it, this is quite pathetic" Phoenix said trying to stifle back a humorless chuckle.
When it became clear that this tactic wouldn't work, April knew that she had only 1 card left to play, the one she hoped she wouldn't need to resort to, but..what choice did she have? As she was contemplating this decision, Phoenix cleared his throat to get her attention. "I've had enough, I'm going to ask you once kindly to leave or I'm calling the cops to give you a private escort out and I imagine you may just get another one way ticket to the slammer." Phoenix said rather proudly, clearly showing he wasn't bluffing or playing any games as he had his cell phone in hand, his fingers on the keypad. April panicked a little inside as she could tell he was serious, so she knew it was now or never. Without hesitation she stopped her tears and looked at him blankly before giving a sly smile as she changed her tone, her voice portraying a far more alluring and sultry tone as she began walking closer again. "Alright then attorney..I'll give you an offer you can't refuse. Give me a voucher and I'll be your secretary and you can keep me out of trouble..I promise I'll make it worth your while" April said, her voice dripping with a provocative and lustful tone.
As much as April hated to admit it, Phoenix was a very good looking guy, that was one thing she never lied about, the moment she saw him she was enamored. This current course of action wasn't exactly how she would've liked to go about this whole ordeal, she knew her pride was hurt a lot..but she was this far in now, there was no point of return.
