"Their rivalry is legendary and their fame unmatched. After battling for over two decades, this epic duel will finally meet a decisive end." Wiz hypes up the episode.
"I've been waiting for this forever!" Boomstick says, eager to get started.
"Woah, they're really hyping this up." Jaune says.
"Ooh, this will be a good one!" Ruby says.
"Mario, the whimsical Italian plumber."
"And Sonic, the hyperactive hedgehog."
"Mario? Hey, isn't he the same guy they kept talking about in the Koopa and Yoshi episodes?" Yang asks.
"I think he is!" Ruby says with excitement.
"Maybe now we can find out what he's all about." Blake says.
"And Sonic, they've referenced him a couple times too." Pyrrha pointed out. "They mentioned Shadow is his rival, so Sonic must be strong to be able to keep up with him."
"Oooh. This is gonna be so fun to watch." Ruby says excitedly.
"I'm Wizard and he's Boomstick, and it's our job to analyze their weapons, armor, and skills to find out who would win… a Death Battle."
"Mario is one of the Star Children and possesses many special abilities with the intent of protecting his home, the Mushroom Kingdom. Even as a baby, he was obviously destined for greatness." Wiz introduces Mario.
"When you've got an army of dinosaurs serving you before you can even speak, you know you're gonna do great things." Boomstick says.
"Paradise!" Nora says, wishing she had an army of Yoshis serving her as a baby.
"He is well known for his incredible athleticism and unmatched jumping ability." Wiz explains.
"Who says white guys can't jump?" Boomstick jokes.
"Plus, he's a powerhouse, with the strength to lift heavy objects and crush enormous castles. He also uses his bare fists to smash solid brick."
"With his jumping skills and weight, he can pound and crush his foes into oblivion, and if he needs some extra firepower, well, he's got his entire arsenal of power-ups!"
"Oh boy. We might need to write this down." Weiss says.
"His first power-up is the Fire Flower. With it, Mario obtains pyrokinetic abilities." Wiz explains.
"Really? I always thought the flower was just really spicy."
"In other words, the Yang flower." Nora says.
"Don't you mean a Sunflower?" Yang retorts.
"How do you gain fire power from a flower?" Weiss asked with confusion.
"Silly Weiss, he said it's a fire flower, remember?" Ruby said.
"Oh yes, that clears things up." Weiss says sarcastically.
"He can create and manipulate fire to produce a variety of devastating attacks." Wiz goes further.
"He's also got his Frog Suit thingy. While wearing it, Mario can jump even higher, swim even faster, and breathe underwater." Boomstick says. "The only problem is no one's really gonna take him seriously wearing that thing. Haha! Ah, look at him!"
Yang, Nora and Ruby can't help but laugh.
"Aw, he looks so cute in his frog onesie." Yang jokes.
Jaune sort of slumps in embarrassment, because he has a bunny onesie.
"Several different power-ups have granted Mario flight before, but none as well as the Cape Feather. With it, Mario can fly for an unprecedented amount of time." Wiz explains.
"The Metal Cap turns Mario's entire body into indestructible living steel. But while Metal Mario's extremely heavy, his strength and speed are boosted, giving him ten times more power and just as much agility as before."
"My, that's impressive." Pyrrha says.
"It shouldn't make sense. But who am I to question it." Ren says.
"So he's even stronger and heavier while getting a speed boost. Nice." Ruby says.
"The Starman envelops Mario into a blinding aura of compressed energy, granting increased speed and complete invulnerability for a short time. Touching a normal enemy in this state will instantly kill the foe. And while it's not technically a power-up, Mario has a Hammer that can crush almost ANYTHING."
"Ooh, look at all the pretty colors." Nora says in astonishment of Mario's Star transformation.
"It seems like Mario's always popping 'shrooms to get more power." Boomstick says. "And with the Mega Mushroom, he gets GINORMOUS, mowin' down people, plants, environment, hell, everything!"
"Mario has battled a larger variety of enemies than any other video game hero. Whether a foe is large or small, scary or goofy, dumb or deadly, nothing has ever proved too much for him." Wiz says.
"What a warrior. I wouldn't expect that from a plumber." Pyrrha admits.
"With how high he jumps, I know he's going to the gym in his spare time and he ain't skipping leg day." Yang says.
"After a long day of plumbing?" Ren asks.
"I know he stinks so bad at the end of the day." Nora says as she pinches her nose.
"Except for keepin' track of his woman. She's always gettin' kidnapped and he's always showing up at the wrong castle. Somebody needs to throw a GPS tracking bracelet on that bitch!" Boomstick jokes.
"Ah yes, the damsel in distress. What an overdone trope." Weiss says.
"You telling me if you weren't in trouble, you wouldn't want a strong, strapping man to come to your rescue?" Yang asks.
"Of course not! I can handle myself. Who would want such a thing?" Weiss asks.
"Yeah… who would…" Blake says as she looks sideways, knowing she can fully well handle herself as well… but she'd be lying if she hadn't fantasized about some of the stories she's read in her books.
"He is fairly impulsive and not much of a strategist, preferring to quickly fight his way through problems before thinking things through."
"But that doesn't matter, Italy's greatest hero can power through anything!"
"It's-a me, Mario!" Mario says as he flashes a peace sign at the screen.
"Very impressive. I can see why he would be so admired like he seems to be on Earth." Pyrrha says.
"Can't say I like his strategy of just charging into a battle like that." Weiss says.
"Oh just say you hate fun and move on." Yang tells her.
"I think I have to agree with Weiss on this one, Yang." Blake says. "You shouldn't underestimate your enemy and go in without some strategy.
"Pfft. Spoiler sport." Yang sticks her tongue out.
"Sonic the Hedgehog is the fastest thing alive, and a freedom fighter battling to save the world from the tyrannical Dr. Ivo Eggman Robotnik." Wiz introduces Mario's opponent.
"Fastest thing alive he says?" Ruby asks, taking offense to that. "I'd like to challenge him to a race to settle that!"
"Youuuu may want to keep those soft and sweet." Ren says.
"Huh?"
"He's not so bad for a tree hugging hippie." Boomstick jokes.
"Sonic's most notable ability is his speed. He can easily break the sound barrier in mere seconds. While his top speed is unknown, he has clocked in an average of 765 mph."
Ruby's jaw dropped before she fell to her knees in front of the TV.
"I CONCEDE! I CONCEDE!" She yells bowing before the hedgehog on screen.
"And that's why." Ren says.
"And that's not even his top speed!" Yang said.
"They said it's unknown. That's unbelievable." Blake said amazed by Sonic's speed.
"Holy crap! This guy must blow through shoes." Boomstick says.
"He can further increase his speed with his trademark figure 8 technique."
"But he's not just fast on his feet. He can curl up into a spiky ball and rip through his opponents with the Spin Attack."
"His Homing Attack rockets toward an opponent and can hit multiple times."
"And with his Spin Dash, he can reach top speeds almost instantly. How does this guy not vomit?"
"That's a good point. With his speed, he has to get a little motion sick? Right?" Jaune asked.
"I mean, not necessarily, what you see and what I see when I use my semblance doesn't move in the same speed." Ruby explains. "Time just sort of moves slower. Maybe it's the same thing with Sonic."
"You couldn't humor me a little bit, Ruby?" Jaune asks.
"Sorry."
"During his adventures, he has used a variety of different shields to improve his abilities." Wiz goes further. "Each shield can deflect minor projectiles and have environmental advantages, though they will disintegrate after blocking a deadly blow."
"The Fire Shield can absorb, well, fire and heat, though it can't survive underwater. No shit. But with it, Sonic can use a fiery dash attack."
"That could come in handy in case Mario picks up the fire flower." Blake points out.
"The Lightning Shield can't survive in aquatic environments either, but it gives Sonic a mid-air jump for further aerial control." Wiz says.
"They seem to keep bringing up water here." Weiss says.
"Huh. I wonder why?" Nora questions.
"Good thing Neptune's not here." Blake mutters under her breath.
"And with the Bubble Shield, he can breathe underwater and control his jumps with a powerful bounce. Why do we keep mentioning water, you may ask?" Boomstick says.
"Yes, I am. That's what I just said!" Nora says.
"'Cause he can't freakin' swim!" Boomstick answers.
"What?!" Nora asks.
"All that power and he can't even swim?" Jaune asks.
"Well, are hedgehogs known for being good swimmers?" Ren tries to defend Sonic a little bit.
"Sonic's ultimate power-up, however, isn't a shield at all. After absorbing thousands of Power Rings during his adventures, Sonic has become an embodiment of chaos." Wiz explains. "Using the power of the seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic can tap into their incredible power and summon the form of Super Sonic."
"Super Sonic can fly, breathe underwater, and is completely invulnerable."
"Not to mention his speed is increased a thousand fold."
"So he's like Shadow." Jaune obviously points out.
"That's going to be an advantage for Sonic." Yang says.
"Maybe so, but let's not forget Shadow lost that fight." Pyrrha points out.
"But as with most things that are unbelievably powerful, it has a time limit. Without a steady supply of power rings, it can't even last a full minute." Boomstick says.
"And when the form finally subsides, Sonic returns to normal at peak physical form, regardless of his condition prior to the transformation." Wiz goes further.
"If Sonic goes Super, he better not play with Mario like Shadow did with Vegeta. It could cost him." Blake says.
"While Sonic's always risking his life saving the world from all kinds of dangerous robots and demigods, he's kind of a dick." Boomstick says.
"Sonic is cocky, arrogant and addicted to action. He gets cranky and unstable when he's cooped up for too long."
Everyone looked at Yang.
"What?" She asks.
"That sounds like you." Blake tells her.
"Oh come on, that doesn't sound anything like me." Yang says.
"And if you ignore him, hah, he'll straight up leave you!"
"But despite his rough personality, he'll do whatever it takes to save the day."
Sonic dodges a laser beam.
"Ooh, I'd like to hang, but I've gotta juice!" Sonic says before he runs away.
"Alright, the combatants are set, let's end this debate once and for all."
"It's time for a DEATH BATTLE!!!"
Everyone took their picks for who was going to win the most anticipated Death Battle yet. And the room was split 50/50 between Weiss, Pyrrha, Jaune and Nora going with Mario and Ruby, Yang, Blake and Ren going with Sonic.
Sonic is calmly sitting in a field when Mario emerges from a pipe. As Sonic leaps back, Mario jumps down in front of him.
"Alright, chubby. Let's settle this!" Sonic challenges Mario.
"Let's-a go!" Mario accepts Sonic's challenge.
FIGHT!
Sonic attacks Mario with fast combos and sends him onto the pipe he emerged from. Mario produces a Fire Flower and becomes Fire Mario. Sonic dodges the fireballs that Mario throws at him but gets hit by Mario's fire slide.
"Wah-ha!" Mario laughs as he hits Sonic.
Mario hits Sonic a few times, then grabs him and spins around in a circle while holding him.
"Here we go!" Mario says before he throws Sonic against the pipe.
Mario then uses his cape to throw Sonic upwards, allowing him to knock Sonic to the floor, spin him around in a lariat of fire, and throw him backwards. Mario then releases a massive storm of flame, the Mario Finale, but Sonic is unscathed thanks to his Flame Shield. Sonic uses his flame dash attack to hit Mario six times. Mario counters Sonic's dash with his hammer.
"They're really going at it!" Jaune says.
"They're evenly matched from the looks of it." Ren says.
"Kick his butt, Mario!" Nora cheers.
"Represent the speedsters, Sonic!" Ruby cheers too.
A short montage of the fight begins. Sonic throws a punch and Mario dodges it, but Sonic then hits Mario with his Homing Attack in the air. Mario then uses his Super Jump Punch at Sonic, and afterward Sonic is standing impatiently next to Tanooki Mario's statue form.
After the montage, Sonic is running as Cape Mario flies after him. Sonic activates his Thunder Shield and dashes over to a volcano with a sad face. Both the hedgehog and the plumber end up inside the volcano, staring at each other on opposite sides.
"So this is where their fated battle will come to an end. How fitting it would be in a volcanic tomb!" Weiss says dramatically.
"Sit down, it's not that serious." Blake says.
A Bob-omb is caught between them. Alarmed, the Bob-omb informs several other Bob-ombs that their home is being apparently invaded by intruders. Mario and Sonic notice them all and Mario reacts, knowing what they are.
"Um, what are those?" Ruby asks.
"They look like-" Jaune starts to say.
"Mama Mia!" Mario can say before the Bob-ombs explode, sending Mario and Sonic flying a far distance.
"-bombs." Jaune finishes his sentence.
Sonic lands in a lake but activates his Bubble Shield to keep him breathing. However, Frog Mario ground pounds him, deactivating his shield. Sonic tries to jump out of the water, but to no avail. And then the music indicating Sonic's drowning starts playing.
"Ah, what is this music?!" Jaune asks worriedly.
"I don't know but I don't like it!" Yang admits.
"Ah it's giving me anxiety!" Ruby yells.
"Guys… Sonic can't swim." Blake reminds them, causing everyone to gasp.
"Get out of there, Sonic!" Ruby shouts at the screen.
As soon the song plays, knowing he couldn't stay down any longer, Sonic tries to run out of the water before he drowns, but his efforts are futile and he floats to the bottom with a panicked expression, and at the last moment, his eyes turn green. Frog Mario swims up into the surface, until…
Everyone leaned in…
"Now I'll show you!" Super Sonic declares, hitting Frog Mario and emerging from the lake.
"How's that plumber?" Sonic asks.
"Wooooo!" Ruby and Yang cheer.
"Woohoo!" Mario yells before he slaps on his Metal Cap, becoming Metal Mario.
Super Sonic tries to attack him, but Metal Mario grabs him and throws him aside. Super Sonic tries a few more attacks but to no avail. After Metal Mario sidekicks Super Sonic away, he produces a Power Star.
"Hey! No fair!" Ruby says.
"All is fair in love and Death Battles, Ruby." Jaune says.
Using the combined powers of the Metal Cap and the Power Star, he attacks Sonic with the Mario Tornado, only for the power to suddenly wear off.
"So you're tougher than I thought, huh? But now it's time for me to finish… this…" Sonic starts to say before Mario produces a Mega Mushroom and becomes Mega Mario. "Whoa…"
"Oh no." Yang says the same way a red echidna would.
Super Sonic continuously attacks Mega Mario, but his attacks do very little. Instead, Mega Mario punches Super Sonic away and the power of the Chaos Emeralds wears off, causing Super Sonic to return to peak physical bluish form.
"Uh oh." Sonic says.
"Oh come on!" Ruby groans out of frustration.
"Well, that's a wrap." Jaune says, predicting the end.
"You're about something very important, Jaune." Ren says.
"What?"
"Sonic's speed."
Sonic falls to the floor. His only option is to run as Mega Mario gives chase after he uses the Figure 8 technique.
"You're too slow!" Sonic tells him, outrunning the Mega Mario, who returns to normal size, albeit a bit dizzy.
"D'oh!" Mario goes.
After Mario was worn out, Sonic then returns back to the red capped plumber.
"Now's my chance!"
Sonic knocks Mario back and forward with the Spin Attack, while mid-air, Sonic then Axel Kicks Mario to the ground and Spin Dashes the back of the downed plumber who screams in agony. The blue speedy hedgehog jumps off the bloodied plumber.
K.O.!
"Oohh. What a painful way to go out." Yang says.
"Heck yeah! That's a win for speedsters!" Ruby cheers.
"Now that's what I call a DEATH BATTLE!" Boomstick says.
"Their power-ups seemed evenly matched, countering blow for blow." Wiz says.
"Mario was even capable of countering the unstoppable Super Sonic!"
"But with their arsenals exhausted, Mario was no match for Sonic's natural speed. Even if they had used their lesser known power-ups like the Ice Flower or Super Emeralds, there's no reason to say the result would be any different."
"Looks like Mario just couldn't keep up."
"The winner is Sonic the Hedgehog."
"Best Death Battle ever!" Ruby says cheerfully.
