Author's Note:

First off with the obligatory I don't own Pokemon, duh.

This is my first attempt at posting a fanfic, however I will try to deliver a story that i hope you all will enjoy!

This story is loosely based on the events of the HG/SS video-games, however there will be many deviations and will not always follow cannon. So with all that being said, I appreciate you all for giving this a try and please let me know if you have any critics that i can use going forward. Enjoy the story!

Gregory Johnson couldn't help the excitement building up in his chest as he gazed at the thick envelope in his hands. His eyes kept tracking back and forth over the elegant script that was inscribed upon its back.

The Pokemon League Association.

Fingers jittery with anticipation Gregory slides his thumb under the envelope's lip and with a quick flick of his wrist pops open the wax seal, embossed with a depiction of a pokeball, grabbing the bundle of papers and an ID card. Lips stuck in a smile so wide his cheeks are starting to hurt, he inspects his new trainer ID. Staring back at him is his own image along with some personal information such as his birthday, address, and his Trainer number. Satisfied he slides the card into his back pocket and opens up the papers.

Gregory,

We extend our sincerest congratulations on your recent graduation from the Pokemon trainer academy. With this accomplishment you are now one step closer to embarking on a grand adventure into the world of Pokemon. You will experience many hardships upon your journey, but you will also find many moments of joy as you encounter all different types of people and Pokemon. Enclosed you will find your new Trainer ID, this will allow you to participate in all league sponsored tournaments and events, most notably this year's Annual Silver Conference. It will also allow you access to medical, lodging, and transfer services provided by Pokemon Centers free of charge.

However, you won't be able to do any of that without a Pokemon partner! Enclosed you will also find a voucher which you may take to your closet league affiliated Pokemon research center or Gym to claim a starter Pokemon. We wish you the best of luck as you learn and grow with your Pokemon!

-Mr. Charles Goodshow,

President, Pokemon League Association

Gregory read over the letter a few more times, letting the words sink in. With reverence he folds up the letter and slips it back into the envelope. which he then places into the back-pack sitting on his bed.

'It's finally time! I wonder what type of Pokemon will be waiting for me at the research center?' he thinks to himself, as he begins gathering the things he will need together. He does one more check of all the gear inside his pack; camping gear, fire starters, cooking supplies, berry pouch, first aid kit for himself, Flashlight, a few potions, antidotes, winter jacket, boots, and finally a few changes of clothes. He grabs his pokegear from the night stand and slings his pack over a shoulder as he heads downstairs. The thuds of his near sprint easily heard throughout the house.

"Gregory! how many times do I need to tell you to not run in the house!" his mother's shout greets him when he reaches the bottom and heads to the kitchen.

"Sorry mom!" he begins "it's just I finally heard back from the PLA! I can finally begin my Pokemon journey!" he continues running up to her and flashing his newly acquired trainer ID.

His mother, Sasha, was an average sized woman in her mid 30's. Her Long brown hair was in a braid that ended at her lower back and she had sun-kissed skin that matched his own. Her green eyes were currently locked on him as he entered the kitchen with a serious set that matched her slight frown as she turned to face him hands already on her hips. The stern look on his mother's face melts to reveal a brilliant smile.

"Oh! Gregory, I'm so happy for you!" she says as she takes his ID and begins to inspect it. Once she returns it she places her hand on either side of his face saying, "I'm so proud of you!" A little embarrassed by his mother's compliment he quickly shakes off her hands.

"Jeez mom, stop it I'm 16 now, not a little kid" then a second later adds "but thanks." Giving her son a soft smile at his bashful response she calls out "Myles! get in here, come look at what Gregory got in the mail."

A few moments later Gregory's father enters the kitchen saying " what is all the fuss about in here"

Myles was a tall man, reaching about 6ft, with an athletic build that he maintained despite nearing his 40's. His dark black hair, which Gregory inherited, was cut short and had slight streaks of gray appearing on the sides. His slight resting smile and faint laugh lines bespoke of his easy going nature and proclivity for merriment. Retrieving the letter from his backpack, he all but shoved it and his ID into his father's hands saying, "Dad, Look! The PLA sent me my trainer ID and Pokemon Voucher! I can finally start my Pokemon Journey!"

"Oh?" he replies taking the letter and ID from his son. He then takes a few moments to read the letter and to look over the ID. After a moments consideration his mouth turns up in a slight smirk.

"I don't know Greg, this ID can't possible be yours, the boy in this picture is much too old to be my son" he finishes with a wink, snaring Gregory in a iron clad side hug.

Gregory a bit indignant despite knowing his dad was teasing tried and failed to break out of his dad's grip.

"ha-ha very funny dad..." he was able to get out just before his dad, with a rare serious expression on his face, cut in saying, "I'm so happy for you son, I know that you will be able to achieve whatever you set out to accomplish."

As soon as he finished saying that a playful smile took over his expression and with a wink Gregory was released from his father's arm.

"When do you plan on going to get your Pokemon?" his mother asked.

"Right now" Gregory replies, only for his stomach to betray him by unleashing a churning gurgle that seemed more a monstrous roar that an indication of hunger.

"woah there son, hold your Ponyta! let me whip you up some breakfast before you go dashing away!"

"I.. suppose I could go for some food' Gregory replies a sheepish smile taking over his face.

Having sated his hunger and with a promise to come show his parents his new Pokemon before leaving, he started making his way towards New Bark town's Pokemon research center.
