Maya Ibuki sulked as she walked home. Another date, another night of being stood up. Why did she even try anymore? She was so fed up with her life, that all she wanted to do was scream. Why did she bother with guys? It wasn't as if she was popular with the ladies either. No matter how hard she tried, she could never seem to land a lasting and meaningful relationship with anybody. She saw a ledge and a thought occurred to her: what would happen if she threw herself off it? No one would miss her. She might even get to see her parents again. She reached the top of the ledge, her legs quivering and tears streaming down her cheeks. Just as she was about to jump, she saw a shooting star in the sky. A strange feeling washed over her and her heart was suddenly filled with hope.

Maybe things would get better, maybe they would stay the same, but maybe this was just a stepping stone for bigger and better things. She made a wish, a wish that she wasn't alone anymore. She also wished that the shooting star didn't hit her!

"Crap!" She yelled as she jumped out of the way. She hit the ground, but she felt nothing. She wasn't dead. In fact, it seemed like she had a mouth full of dirt. Spitting it out, she opened her eyes and saw a smoldering crater. Something was inside the crater, and she was going to find out. She saw something metal. Metal and round. She got close and touched it, only to burn her hand from the metal being hot. "Hot hot hot!"

She blew on her hand, cooling it off. She was curious, so she put her hand back on the metal, ignoring the pain. This was the worst decision she ever made. The metal lit up, and the next thing Maya knew, the sphere opened up, revealing- a baby?!

Maya stared at the infant. Why was there a baby here? And how did the baby get here? And why was she thinking these questions? Maya picked the child up and the baby cooed. She noticed a green crystal next to the baby with a diamond shape, and a prominent S-shaped crest etched into it. She grabbed the crystal. It was cool, despite the heat the sphere was giving off.

Maya looked at the child, who looked back at her with big blue eyes.

Maya felt a smile on her lips. This kid was cute. She didn't know where it came from or what was going on, but she knew she had to protect the little bundle of joy.

She suddenly heard helicopters approaching, her first instinct being to grab the crystal and the blankets the baby was wrapped in before running a good distance. "Ma'am!" She heard a voice say, a gun pointed at her.

"I don't have anything!" She said, holding the child close.

"We just wanted to ask you something." A second voice said.

"Okay... What?" Maya asked.

"Did you see anything?" the first asked.

"Just a meteor crash. It left a huge crater," Maya lied. "I was just taking my son for a nightly stroll," She held up the child, who was currently gnawing on her necklace. If the soldier found her story odd, he didn't show it.

"Alright. But if we have more questions, we'll come and find you." The person said.

Maya nodded. She quickly ran to her apartment, locked the door, placed the baby down, and began to pace quickly around the room.

"Okay, I need to think," Maya said. "You're in space and you're not wearing a spacesuit, you have to be an alien, right?" She looked at the baby, who cooed. "That means you don't know Japanese, huh? And I can't take you to an adoption center because they'll want papers. And you're not gonna tell me where your parents are." She groaned. "What the hell was I thinking?!"

Maya sat down and the baby crawled towards her, giggling as he reached his arms up, wanting to be picked up. Maya picked the child up and kissed his head. She was thinking with her heart instead of her head. This wasn't the most rational thing she'd ever done, but something told her it was the right choice. She could feel it deep down in her heart. She couldn't explain it. " I guess you'll just be mine. I mean, I haven't had a job in about a year..." She looked at the baby closely, "You look a lot like me, actually. I think that's how we'll play this."

The baby giggled and Maya smiled. She didn't know what the future would hold, but she was excited to go through it with this little one.

"You need a name…" She said. She looked at him again and smiled, "I'll call you Akira! Akira Ibuki, my little miracle." She said, kissing his forehead. Maya smiled. She knew Akira was special, she could feel it. This was going to be the start of a wonderful, if not unusual life.

So I did this on a whim, and as the title says, it's somewhat of a one-shot. If you guys want more, then just say so.
