Summary: An accident during gym class might give Yuma and Kotori the perfect opportunity to finally express their feelings for each other.
"Time to high five the sky." Yuma screamed excitedly.
It was morning at Heartland Academy and the class was just starting gym class. For this lesson the gym teacher had split up the class in four teams to compete against each other in volleyball duels.
Kotori smiled slightly when she heard how motivated and energetic Yuma was about playing the game. She only hoped that her team would be fine too. It was the first time any of the girls had ever played volleyball so no one was sure if they would be good at it.
The teacher blew the whistle and two teams each began the game at different sides of the gym.
So far it was looking good for Yuma's team. Astral was observing the game and after a while he had guessed the rules, but he was still a little confused.
'What is the purpose of this game, Yuma?'
"Winning it." Yuma grinned happily and ran in the direction of the incoming ball.
Even if this wasn't the answer Astral had been looking for, he decided to not ask again and went back into the key.
Suddenly a scream from across the gym caught Yuma's full attention. It wasn't the noise itself but the name that was called loudly. Not caring for the game any longer, he ran over to where a girl had screamed Kotori's name in fear. The closer he came to finding out what had happened, the more his heart began beating wildly. Pushing his way through the crowd of girls, he saw Kotori sitting on the floor. A girl with blond hair was standing next to her bowing deeply and apologizing.
"I'm so so sorry. I didn't mean to hit the ball so close to your face. Sorry sorry sorry."
"Don't worry about it, I ducked after all and it was my own fault for dodging so clumsily that I fell." Kotori smiled at the girl and was about to stand up, but the moment she put pressure on her ankle she felt a sharp pain shot through it. Her legs gave out under her and she closed her eyes tightly, preparing herself to hit the floor. However when she felt no impact, she slowly opened her eyes to see what had prevented her from falling. Yuma was holding her steadily around the waist. Her eyes locked with his concerned ones.
"You need to go to the nurse."
Their close proximity and his soft spoken words made Kotori blush. Despite her pain she immediately felt better. It wasn't the first that he had this effect on her. She held deep feelings for him for a long time now, but she had decided to keep them to herself. Being so close to him and being hold like this, she felt her resolve crumbling.
Yuma would have blushed at holding his best friend and secret crush so close, if it hadn't been for his concern over her.
"Kotori are you listening? You need to go to the nurse."
At hearing his words she snapped out of her thoughts. Only now she realized that a crowd had formed around them and she didn't like the attention.
"I'm fine. I'll just sit on the bench for a few minutes and it'll be okay." All she wanted now was get out of the spotlight. Little did she know that Yuma had other plans.
"You're not fine. Your ankle is hurt and I'll bring you to the nurse now, if I want or not." Without waiting for her upcoming protest he picked her up bridal style and began leaving the gym with her.
"Yuma what..." Kotori's blush intensified when she had to encircle her arms around his neck, so she wouldn't fall off.
"Don't worry, I'll take care of you."
It were not only his words but also the gentleness in his voice that was stopping Kotori's resistance. He had always a way of making her feel safe, no matter the circumstances.
Yuma felt Kotori relax in his arms and smiled slightly. When she thanked him softly and lay her head on his shoulder a blush rose on his cheeks. They were never this close before and he couldn't help but want to hold her like this more often. It just felt right to him. He knew that he shouldn't think like that because he was sure that Kotori didn't feel the same way.
Yuma snapped out of his thoughts when he noticed that he was already standing in front of the nurse office. It was a little difficult to open the door with Kotori still in his arms, but he managed.
"Oh what happened?" The nurse asked at the sight of them.
"I hurt my ankle while playing volleyball." Kotori explained a little embarrassed.
"Then we should better take a closer look at it."
"I'm sorry to bother you. It's probably nothing. I didn't even want to be here, but Yuma forced me to come here."
"What is wrong with me being worried about you? Is it so bad that I care about you?" Yuma asked a little hurt.
"Of course not, but you didn't have to carry me here." Kotori argued with a deep blush.
"But you hurt your ankle and you can't walk, so of course I had to carry you."
"That isn't the point. I mean-"
The school nurse looked at the teens. Obviously there were a couple and a sweet one at that, but she had to stop them and take care of the girl's injury.
"Sorry to interrupt, but I need to take a look at your ankle. Yuma, you can lay her down here." She gestured to the examination table.
When Yuma lay the girl down, the nurse could see how softly he did so. The blush on the faces of the teens wasn't lost on her either. Smiling gently at the girl, she carefully removed her shoe and tested different spots. After a few tests Kotori cried out in pain.
"Stop that, you're hurting her. You should help her, not make it worse." Yuma said angrily.
The nurse shook her head lightly. This boy was really overprotective of her and showed so much care for the girl, that the nurse had to wonder. This couple must feel strongly for each other.
"I'm about to help her, but I had to test her ankle first." The nurse looked back from Yuma to her patient. "I'm afraid I have to snap it back in place before I can bandage it."
"Is it going to hurt?" When the nurse nodded, Kotori bit her lip. "Even more than when you were moving it around?"
"Yes, I'm afraid so."
"Is this really necessary?" Yuma asked concerned.
When the nurse nodded once again Kotori's face lost all color, but she knew that she had to endure it if she wanted her ankle to heal properly.
"Please do it quick." Kotori whispered.
Yuma saw her shaking and he knew that he had to calm her down.
"Look at me, Kotori." He took her hands in his and looked deep into her eyes. "I'm here."
Kotori nodded but didn't let go of his hands while the nurse began. The pain was worse than anything Kotori had felt before and she tried her best to keep herself from screaming. Tears made their way down her cheeks without her will and she started shaking.
The sight of her broke Yuma's heart. He wanted to help her so badly and if he could take her pain away he would in a heartbeat. However all he could do was hold onto her hand and whisper to her that it would be alright. When the nurse was finally done and left to get the bandages for Kotori's foot, Yuma was glad.
"You were really brave." Yuma said and gently pushed a few strands of Kotori's hair out of her face and wiped away her tears.
"I really wasn't. I must have looked pathetic."
Yuma frowned at her words. How could she think that about herself? In his eyes she was the strongest and most determined girl he knew. Despite all that had happened to them, she had never left his side.
"What I said is true. I don't know any girl that is as great as you." He hadn't meant to say the last part out loud, but that didn't make it any less true.
Kotori blushed at the compliment. It was only now that they noticed how close their were. One of Yuma's hands was still intertwined with hers next to her head and the other one was close to her face from when he had wiped her tears away. If he would lean down a little more their noses would be touching. In a daze because of his words, Kotori lay a hand on his cheek. Was this the moment she had been waiting for? When he slowly moved his face closer to hers, she closed her eyes hoping that he would really kiss her. Their lips were so close that she could feel his breath on her lips.
"I'm back with the bandages." The cheerful voice of the nurse broke their moment.
As fast as lightning both teens moved quickly away from each other. Yuma couldn't help but feel disappointed. He had been so close to finally kissing Kotori and he was sure that he wouldn't get that chance again. Kotori felt similar about their almost kiss. Both were deep in thoughts about the other while the nurse bandaged Kotori's foot. When she was done she left the room to get them a excuse for their teacher. Slowly Kotori sat up, but she had moved too fast and swayed slightly. Yuma saw her struggle and lay his hands on her waist to stabilize her.
"Don't overdue it. Take your time."
"I'm sorry that I'm holding you up so long." Kotori smiled apologetically.
"Your health is more important than anything. Please take it slow." He hesitated for a moment before adding. "If not for yourself, do it for me. I really care about you."
It was the closest to a confession they had ever come and after their almost kiss they both knew it.
"Yuma, do you mean it?"
Yuma nodded, not breaking eye contact. Kotori saw deep care and devotion in his eyes and blushed when he moved one of his hands from around her waist to her cheek. The magic moment from before was back and they slowly leaned it. With a deep blush covering both of their cheeks they closed the gap between their lips. When their lips finally met both of them poured their true feelings into the kiss. The day might not have been great at first for Kotori, but the way it was turning out was perfect.
