Chapter 1: Wedding Eve, Part Two
In the Ristorante Sundayrino...
"Then, their parents passed away because of the fire?" Megure gaped.
"Yes." Amuro nodded. "It was a pretty big fire and many casualties. They both were infants."
"So, that means they were childhood friends?" Megure wondered.
"No, he was adopted quickly." Amuro responded. "She was raised in the church for a while."
"But, why would that make her gloomy?" Megure inquired.
"No idea." Amuro admitted. "She said she would do the rest."
"Hey, Ran-onee-chan." Conan voiced. "About Hatsune-san's height, she was shorter than you, right?"
"She was wearing high heels, so she must be shorter than me." Ran recalled. Maybe about 4.9 feet. But why are you asking that?"
The average height for Japanese women is 5.2 feet. Conan's mind went into overdrive.
"Inspector Megure." Chiba came in.
"Did the DNA results come in?" Megure asked.
"Not yet." Chiba replied. "According to the coroner, one fake nail is missing."
"That's because one flew near the car." Megure moaned.
"No, there's another one missing." Chiba supplied.
"Then, it must have fallen off and burnt." Megure concluded.
Or perhaps... Conan mused and hurried outside.
In the restaurant's parking lot...
"The place where the umbrella was found?" the forensics officer on site echoed after Conan spoke his request. "Why are you asking that?"
"Kogoro-ojii-san asked me to ask you." Conan replied.
"It was in between these two cars." the forensics officer led Conan over. "Like this."
"Look like you're here for the same thing I am, boy." Ami was already by the white car, with a pair of rubber gloves over her hands and a pair of tweezers in a hand. "Send this to the lab, please." she bagged the fake nail under the car into a clear evidence bag and handed it to the forensics officer.
There's blood and skin on the tip. Conan realized. This will probably clear things up on who stole her life. He walked off. And if my deduction is correct, a tragic truth will be unveiled. A sad truth that I didn't want to know.
In the Ristorante Sundayrino...
"Damnit, I'm so confused." Banba cursed.
"Calm down, Banba." Mouri chided. "You know you're in a sticky situation, right? Inside the car at this restaurant's parking lot, Hatsune-san died and near the car was a fake nail with skin that could belong to the culprit. Also, the skin's DNA almost matches with your hair that was on the hairbrush. A situation in which you're highly suspected. About that, did you ever lend your hairbrush?"
"Lend?" Banba echoed. "I wonder. I don't remember that happening. I've been living with Hatsune since half a year ago. Maybe some detective might have used it while I was away."
"It's true that I was hired by her, but I've never been to her home." Amuro protested.
"The part of you being a detective is a bit suspicious." Banba added. "No one can prove it since Hatsune has died. Dodging the detective I hired, being able to do that, you could possibly have sneaked into my home, put someone else's hair and tried to put the blame on me."
"I wouldn't do such spy-like things." Amuro stammered.
"That's impossible." Megure agreed, hanging up his phone. "I just got the results from the DNA test. The hair on Banba-san's hairbrush has been proven it's his."
"Then, you did." Amuro smirked. "You mistook me, a detective, as a lover and from that, you got killer intent. You hid and waited for her at the parking lot until she returned. Then you pushed her into the car and lit it on fire."
"Please come to the station." Takagi requested.
"Mouri, do something." Banba pleaded. "I got it." he sighed.
"Are you sure, Banba?" Mouri voiced, Conan having knocked Mouri out with his Stun-Gun Wristwatch and imitated Mouri's voice using the Voice-Changing Bowtie. "Really? I'm asking if it's really okay to leave?"
"I have no choice." Banba reminded. "I have to try to convince them that I'm innocent."
"Then you are not the culprit." Conan declared.
"Hey, Mouri-kun." Megure chided. "Even if he chooses to go to the station voluntarily, that doesn't make him not the culprit. Even if we investigate, he might be thinking if he doesn't confess, eh won't be arrested."
"Now then, please remember." Conan reminded. "The situation when Hatsune-san's exploded. The back door leading to the parking lot was locked because it was raining. Under the restroom's window was a huge puddle and the culprit's footprints wasn't there. So the only option is the front door. If he, the center of the party, left through the front, someone would see and remember, right?"
"Not that nobody saw, but nobody noticed, is what I would deduce." Amuro snorted. "He disguised himself in the restroom. He had prepared a change of clothes in the restroom from the beginning. For example, a knit hoodie and a long windbreaker. First, he greeted everyone at the party,; this is to show everyone what he was wearing."
"Then, what about the call I made before the car exploded?" Banba demanded. "What about that phone call? Hatsune was crying while saying bye."
"Did you really call right before the explosion?" Amuro inquired. "You actually ambushed her in disguise. Didn't you call her right when she got out? You distracted her in order to make her unconscious. Then, even though there were some resistance, you somehow got her into the car and then you ran back to the restaurant after lighting the car, changed back in the restroom, your purposely bumped into me, a waiter, to get hurt, in order to hide the injury from the resistance. All that was left was to fake a call. You made everyone think she was going to commit suicide. You looked outside to make everyone see a burning car. A story of how a lady commits suicide in front of her loving partner is complete. The spray that exploded at that time was lucky, huh?"
"Nonsense." Banba snapped. "She really dis say goodbye. Check her phone. It should be in her car."
"There was a burnt cellphone." Takagi supplied. "Even if the data is retrieved, we won't know the conversation."
"According to the deduction, we should have found clothes in the restroom, then." Megure mused.
"He must have cut it up and flushed it down the toilet." Amuro reasoned. "A knot hoodie is easy, a thin windbreaker can be easily cut into pieces."
"What about the shoe?" Conan questioned. "You can't easily cut up a shoe."
"You don't need to change shoes." Amuro stated. "As long as you are walking, it's difficult to differentiate. He is even wearing a sneaker that is sold anywhere."
"Then Banba, take it off and show them." Conan requested. "The bottom of your sneaker. That will prove that you're not the criminal."
"There's cream at the bottom." Takagi inspected the shoe.
"I think that's chocolate cake." Ran piped in. "Banba-san stepped on a cake that was on the floor."
"When did he step on it?" Megure asked.
"Before Hatsune-san left for the nail salon." Ran replied.
"I see." Takagi realized. "If he walked outside during the incident, this cream would be washed off. If he rushed back from the scene, that's more the reason."
"So that means he never left the restaurant." Megure noted.
"Yes." Conan confirmed. "Actually, when I first saw it, I thought it was a plan by Banba. A plan of how he somehow changed shoes, showed me the cream, and prove that he never left the restaurant. But that cake was stepped on accidentally because of that young waiter's fault. Banba doesn't say anything about the cream on his shoes. Additionally, he was going to walk in the rain and ruin a perfectly solid proof. That's why I was certain; that the cream was not a fake, but real proof that Banba is innocent."
"But, what about the DNA?" Amuro protested. "The DNA on the fake nail almost matched. It's proof that he was near her."
"You didn't think the skin could be hers?" Conan prompted.
"What are you saying?" Amuro stammered. "As I said earlier, it's impossible to have similar DNA unless you're blood-related. A person with similar DNA appearing is 1 in 4.7 trillion. Above all, all females don't have a Y chromosome, so we will find out quickly."
"What if they were almost a match because the gender chromosome was damaged by rain and mud?" Conan proposed.
"Even if so, those two coincidentally met, by chance fell in love, is what you're saying?" Amuro questioned.
"The meeting could have been coincidental, but being drawn together was inevitable." Conan stated. "Isn't that right, Ms. Coroner who is at the door?"
"Coroner?" Megure echoed. "Isn't he supposed to arrive tomorrow?"
"You sure made me wait a while, Mouri-san." Ami made herself known. "Those two are twins."
Why is she here? Amuro held back a startled gasp at the sight of the newcomer.
"Inspector Megure." Ami addressed her future superior. "I'm Mizuno Ami, hailing from the Las Vegas Crime Lab. My credentials." she handed over a copy of her certifications.
"Chief Kuroda recommended you?" Megure gaped.
"Then, you're Kaneko's replacement?" Takagi was shocked to see how young their new colleague was. "You are young."
"Banba, you said it right?" Conan continued. "You both have the same birth date, blood type, and could understand each other without communicating, right?"
"But that doesn't mean we're twins." Banba stammered.
"You didn't know that, but you and Hatsune-san, as infants, were saved from the same hotel fire and raised at the same church with no identification." Conan related.
"I see." Takagi mused. "That fire killed the parents and no one knew they were twins."
"But, being twins make you have the same DNA?" Megure was confused.
"It could happen when it's identical twins." Takagi supplied. 'I think when it happens, it's both males or both females."
"There are exceptions." Ami piped in.
"When the fertilized egg is XY, male, when it splits, for some reason, one of them loses a Y chromosome, it becomes XY and XO." Amuro added. "In other words, they would be born as opposite sex identical twins."
"You're kidding, right?" Banba gaped. "Us being twins?"
"Do your know how tall she is?" Amuro asked.
"She said she was about 4.9 feet." Banba replied. "She was bothered by her height."
"That settles it then." Ami noted. "Turner's Syndrome."
"The female identical of the opposite sex identical twin is susceptible to shortness." Amuro explained.
"But, why did her fake nail have her own skin on it?" Banba demanded.
"You don't know, Banba?" Conan chided. "You hear from this young detective that you both were saved from the same hotel fire. Then you hear that she was investigating the rest. The information she was looking for was to check with DNA if you two were twins or not. Probably when she got back from the nail salon, right when she got out of the car, she got a call from the contractor and heard the results. 'You two can't get married. You two are twins.'"
"No way.." Banba broke into heartbroken wails.
"The reason why there was skin on the fake nail was because after being shocked by the results, she clawed her face in despair while crying." Conan surmised. "One of the fake nails fell in the umbrella and that fake nail is being investigated right now. After the results come out, it will be clear."
"Megure speaking." Megure took the incoming call. "I see. I got it."
"Are the results in?" Takagi pressed. "The results of the other fake nail?"
"Yeah." Megure confirmed. "The one Mizuno-san found and bagged also had blood on it and wasn't tainted. It perfectly matched with Banba-san, except the gender chromosome. It also matched with her corpse, so the skin on the fake nail is confirmed to be hers."
"Then, she really did commit suicide." Takagi noted.
"That's the only thing I can think of." Megure concluded. "That contractor called at the worst time."
"He probably heard they were going to marry tomorrow, so he wanted to notify them as soon as possible." Takagi reasoned. "Before there was no turning back."
"Hatsune..." Banba sunk to his knees, chanting his late sister/lover's name in agony.
The next day, at Café Poirot...
"Make you an apprentice?" Mouri echoed after Amuro made his request. "Me, the famous detective, Mouri Kogoro?"
"Of course." Amuro beamed. "The brilliant deduction last night showed how inexperienced I am. I want to start from the beginning. So that's why I'm working part-time near you. I want to be with you at any case you get involved with."
"But I don't take apprentices." Mouri remarked.
"As tuition, for each case..." Amuro whispered into Mouri's ear.
"Seriously?" Mouri spat out his coffee. "Hired. From now on, call me sensei, Amuro-kun."
Another annoying one joins. Conan sighed, drinking his juice.
