Chapter 5: Detectives' Nocturne: Kidnapping
At Kashitsuka's apartment...
"This is a nice block of flats." Mouri was appreciative. "The rent has to be pretty high."
"Kind of." Kashitsuka agreed. "But both my brother and I've been living here thanks to our parents' money. You don't need to follow me anymore." she reached her door. "We've confirmed that nobody's trying to ambush me, after all."
"I forgot to go to the toilet." Conan suddenly exclaimed. "Please let me use the toilet, onee-san. Please!"
"Just hold on a second." Kashitsuka dug for her keys. "The toilet's the first door on the right past the entrance."
"Thanks." Conan kicked off his shoes.
"Then, would you like to come in for a while?" Kashitsuka offered. "Although I don't have anything other than tea to serve you."
"What a mess." Mouri gawked at the untidy state of the living room. "Did you have a party or something last night?"
"I got together with several friends from university." Kashitsuka explained. "Sorry for the mess. Let's see." she looked around the kitchen.
"This afternoon at 4pm, in the Mouri Detective Agency's toilet in Beika City's fifth block, a shocking incident took place, where a man committed suicide." the newscaster came on.
"It's in the news already?" Ran was astonished. "Mum must be worried, since I turned on my mobile phone. Hello?" she took the incoming call.
"Why the hell did you turn off your mobile phone?" Sera roared from the other end. "I'm worried sick here."
"Sera-san?" Ran winced. "Sorry, there's a case, so it's a bit hectic here."
"So are Conan and Kogoro-san, all right?" Sera asked, her voice breaking up over the line.
"Sorry, you're breaking up, it's hard to hear you." Ran responded. "Sera-san? Can you hear me?"
"Kei-san." Amuro turned to their hostess after he ended Ran's call. "This room might be wiretapped."
"But how do you know that?" Ran blinked.
"It was Ran's phone call just now, right?" Mouri asked. "When there are wiretaps around, mobile phones get poor reception.
"As expected from Mouri-sensei." Amuro praised. "Kei-san, we would like to search every room from wiretaps now. You don't mind, right?"
"Please wait five minutes." Kashitsuka requested. "They're all messed up. I'd tidy up my underwear and whatnot." she made herself scarce.
"Where are you going?" Conan asked, Kashitsuka made her way to the door.
"I'm out of tea leaves, so I'm going to buy some from a convenience store." Kashitsuka replied.
"Then, I'll come with you." Conan suggested. "There's something I'd like to buy."
"It's been 10 minutes." Mouri checked his watch. "But Kei-san's not back yet."
"Then let's searching for the wiretaps on our own." Amuro proposed. "Sorry for the bother, but please stand in the middle of the room I'm searching through while playing some sort of song from your mobile phone at full volume. Using that song, we'll find the wiretaps and dispose of them."
In Kashitsuka's car...
"So, you have a driving license, right onee-san?" Conan asked, Kashitsuka having bundled him into her car. "But driving licenses can prove your identity, right? Why didn't you show it to the inspector back then?"
"I didn't want to show it because I look ugly on the picture on the license." Kashitsuka chuckled. "By the way, did you like it? The fruit juice I recommended and we bought from the vending machine on the way?"
"It's yummy." Conan nodded.
In Kashitsuka's apartment...
"Amazing, it's the third one already." Ran gaped, bagging the third wiretap in a clear plastic bag.
"There's one here, too." Amuro located the fourth wiretap by a wall socket using the detector.
"What's with this room?" Mouri winced, an overpowering stench emitting from the room he just opened the door to. "It smells terrible."
"Apparently, there's a wiretap in this room, too." Amuro noted.
"By the way, I haven' seen Kei-san and Conan for quite a while now." Ran remarked.
"Let them be." Mouri chided, entering the room. "Searching for the wiretaps is our first priority right now."
"It looks like the wiretap's under the bed." Amuro commented.
"There's a huge suitcase underneath it." Mouri noticed. "Move aside a bit. Why is it so heavy?" he dragged the suitcase out. "The wiretap's in here, right?"
"The stench seems to be coming from there, too." Ran noticed.
"Anyway, let's open it up." Amuro nodded.
Ran let out a horrified scream when a dead man was found tucked inside the suitcase.
"Why's there a body in the suitcase?" Mouri demanded. "And who's this guy?"
"He's a rather lean man." Amuro noted. "He was beaten to death, and I'm guessing it's been a little over a day since he died."
"Like we thought, the wiretap was in here, but..." Mouri removed the wiretap.
"Anyway, let's talk to Kei-san about this, since she owns the house." Ran suggested.
"But she might not be here anymore." Amuro pointed out. "Since her boots weren't there when I passed the front door a minute ago. I wondered if they were on the shoe rack then, but it's also plausible that she ran away because she was afraid we'll find the body while we checked the rooms searching for the wiretap."
"Then, you're saying Kei-san killed this guy?" Mouri inquired.
"I can't be sure about that yet, but the fact that Conan's shoes are also gone makes me a little worried." Amuro admitted.
"No way." Ran gasped. "But why..."
"I can't say..." Amuro frowned. "Perhaps he chased her when she escaped or maybe she took him."
"I'm going to try to call Conan." Ran flipped open her phone.
"I just sent Kei-san an email." Mouri added. "But if she ran away, I doubt she'll reply. An email." he gaped. "'Seeing that I got an email from you, I take it you found the body.'" he read the message that came with a photo of the sleeping Conan. "'Although I plan on giving the boy back when the day breaks, if you try to report this to the police or get in the way of my escape, then I can't guarantee his safety.' Then, Kei-san really did kill this guy?"
"What if she was the one who actually killed the guy who supposedly committed suicide by shooting himself?" Amuro surmised.
"But there's almost no gunshot residue on her." Mouri reminded. "Doesn't that mean she didn't fire a gun?"
"But we're really at a loss here." Amuro pondered. "To think that we found yet another body and the killer took Conan, yet we can't make a move until morning."
"If only the brat would give us a hint on where they were..." Mouri muttered.
"Professor Agasa might be able to figure it out." Ran recalled.
"Professor Agasa?" Amuro echoed. "Who is he?"
"He know Conan." Ran replied. "Conan always carries around a detective badge with a transmitter on it and Professor Agasa made some glasses that can track it."
In Professor Agasa's house...
"Conan's been kidnapped?" Professor Agasa echoed after Ran informed him. "By a murderer?"
"That's why we want you to track down Conan's detective badge with the tracking glasses." Ran requested.
"I got it." Professor Agasa nodded. "I can track it with the spare glasses but..."
In Kashitsuka's apartment...
"Sorry, I've got someone on the other line." Ran switched over. "It might be Conan."
"Why'd you keep hanging up on me?" Sera snapped. "Do you hate me or something?"
"Sera-san." Ran winced. "Sorry, there's a lot right now and we're all in a panic. Anyway, Conan's in trouble."
"This room is strange." Amuro stated, having surveyed the apartment. "There were only men's shoes in the shoe rack and the clothes in the laundry as well as the closet are all men's clothes."
"Then Kei-san's deceased brother was the only one living here?" Mouri wondered.
"I don't know about that yet, but I can tell you that the occupant of this room paid quite a bit of attention to an incident that took place a few days ago." Amuro added.
"You're right." Ran gaped when Mouri switched on the television and opened the recording history. "There's nothing but news and talk shows recording all in a row."
"Moreover, the parts concerning the bank robbery case have been edited together." Mouri flipped through the recording. "This is an image of the 3-man robbery group as seen from the security camera released this morning. If I recall correctly, it is a 3-man group consisting of a short guy, a slender guy, and an athletic guy."
"The athletic guy was shown firing a gun." Ran supplied. "Although the person being shot at was out of frame and wasn't shown."
"Additionally, the bank employee was shot to death after trying to calm the robbers down." the newscaster was heard reporting. "Shouno Kenya's wake was held yesterday evening. The line of condolence callers who were touched by Shouno's brave actions continued after midnight."
"That guy..." Ran gaped, seeing Shouno's portrait on the screen. "He's Kei-san's brother. The one who was on her mobile phone's wallpaper. But why does he have a different surname?"
"And isn't it strange?" Mouri wondered. "If the one living here was Kei-san's brother, then there's no way she could've edited this morning's news."
"Whoever was living here, seeing that they were taking the trouble to archive these news and talk shows, isn't it natural to think that it'd be either a considerable crime enthusiast, the victim's family planning to take revenge on the killer, or perhaps the robber himself?" Amuro suggested. "Anyway, let's look around the room a little more. Although the only thing left is the PC in the bedroom."
