Chapter 166: The Monorail Sniper Case, Part Two

At the Toto Market...

"I know we said a person transporting something large wouldn't stand out here." Takagi admitted, he, Mouri and Conan were watching the fishmongers ferry their products to and fro.

"Everyone here is transporting something large." Mouri gawked.

"There's no way to find the culprit." Takagi sighed.

"They must be here somewhere." Mouri insisted.

"Detective Takagi." an officer ran in. "Could you come with me immediately, sir?"

In the Toto Market carpark...

"It's Chiba." Takagi took the call, the group having located the fishmonger whose clothes and turret truck the culprit had stolen.

At the police headquarters...

"I thought I'd call you to report a few things." Chiba related. "First, there's Maruta Daisuke-san, the man who was shot in the monorail car and the woman who was held in the car. Her name is Tamura Kiyomi-san. It's likely that she simply got caught up in the incident. Neither of them has criminal records and there was nothing suspicious about their testimonies. Next, the resident of Room 505 at Prime Toto Wangan; his name is Akiyama Ichiro-san. He worked in sales for a leasing company and left his job at the end of last month. He has an ordinary license and no criminal record, but he's a suspect in the attack on the bank transport truck that occurred in Beika City four months ago. He was apparently removed from the list of suspects because his alibi for the time of the crime was verified. We received testimony that he began spending lavishly immediately after the incident."

"Detective Takagi, that incident..." Conan prompted.

"It's still unsolved." Takagi related. "It happened four months ago: a Beika Bank transport truck was attacked. The attackers suddenly blocked a narrow road in a residential neighborhood. They became trapped in a dead-end alleyway. The two guards were threatened with guns. After they were tied up, the culprit stole the 150 million yen in cash they were transporting along with the truck itself. We received testimony that the gun used in the attack was a Tokarev, just like the one used in this case. Later, the truck was found near the Teimuzu River embankment. Aside from the change and fake bills containing transmitters for tracking purposes, all the cash inside the truck was stolen. Judging by the culprits' methods, we believe they know the truck's schedule and route."

"if that information was leaked to the culprits..." Conan started. "None of the bank employees were suspects, right?"

"Apparently, they didn't find anyone suspicious at that time." Takagi confirmed. "Wait. If a bank employee was leaking information, even if they kept a low profile at the time..."

"They may have chosen to act four months later." Mouri concluded.

"I'll follow up with the bank employees and see what they're doing now." Chiba knew where this was headed.

"Detective Takagi," two police officers reported in. "We found the stolen turret truck."

"Kogoro-oji-san, what did the culprit come here to do?" Conan wondered aloud, as they watched the forensics sweep the abandoned truck for evidence.

"To let lost in the crowd." Mouri replied.

"What did the culprit intend to do after that?" even Takagi was confused.

"Probably hide themselves or the victim." Conan reasoned.

"Where could they hide both themselves and the body?" Mouri pondered.

"Some place deserted, perhaps." Takagi suggested and he recalled the Toto Market had an underground warehouse.

At the warehouse entrance...

"The lock's been broken." Mouri noticed the broken lock.

"Those marks look fresh." Takagi noted.

After walking into the warehouse, the group was alerted by a series of gunshot fire and hurried over to the location where they found a wounded Samejima Takuro lying on the floor and the dead Akiyama Ichiro near him.

"We've arrived." Takagi removed the cloth over Samejima's eyes, after having sent him to the hospital in an ambulance.

"What's going on here?" Samejima sat up from the wheeled stretcher, noticing that he was back in the warehouse.

"Oji-san, why did the culprit shoot you?" Conan inquired. "What are you doing here?"

"The lock on the entrance was broken, so I thought I'd take a look inside." Samejima replied.

"You smell like gasoline, oji-san." Conan sniffed.

"I accidentally spilled some on my feet when I was filling my turret truck with gas earlier." Samejima explained.

"Accidentally, huh?" Mouri snorted, only to be tranquilized by Conan seconds later.

"Why don't you stop playing dumb?" Conan took on Mouri's voice. "An examination of your clothes would quickly reveal them to be those stolen from the wholesaler. And examining the body would reveal what you were attempting to do: that body was on top of a plastic sheet. There's a knife next to it. What were you planning to do with that knife? Damage the body, perhaps? Were you not intending to cut open the body?"

"Why would I do that?" Samejima scoffed.

"Allow me to explain why you were attempting to do that." Conan continued. "It became clear to me once I considered several pieces of information. Are you not one of the individuals who attacked the bank transport truck four months ago? And the victim lying on the ground over there was probably your accomplice. He was trying to keep the stolen money for himself. When you learned that, you entered his apartment to demand the location of the money from him. Sensing his life was in danger, the victim pretended to follow your orders and waited for an opportunity to swallow something. In a fit of rage, you got into a tussle with the victim and then the gun went off. The bullet flew into the monorail car and struck a passenger. Because of that, the incident was discovered, and you were forced to run around with the body. Detective Takagi, could you read the list you received from Detective Chiba?"

"Samejima Takuro, 42 years old." Takagi scrolled down the list to Samejima's profile. "Works at Beika Bank Headquarters. You've been on paid leave since two days ago. Apparently, you told your co-workers that you were going to Taiwan. Why did you lie about going to Taiwan?"

"Is lying to my co-workers a crime?" Samejima snorted.

"But attacking a person and stealing their clothes and truck are crimes." Conan countered.

"Carrying a gun, armed robbery and murder are crimes." Takagi added.

"How does it feel knowing that you had to flee with a body because that gun went off?" Conan inquired.

"He must've been heavy." Takagi stated. "Because you were distracted by his weight, you left thar blood behind."

"You did your best to clean it, but there was gunshot residue and a large amount of blood in the victim's apartment." Conan revealed. "You did attack the bank transport truck, right?" he poked his head out of the pillar he was hiding behind.

"I don't know what you're trying to get me to say, but I didn't attack the transport truck and I didn't kill Akiyama either." Samejima insisted.

"Detective Takagi." Conan took on Mouri's voice again.

"I heard him clearly." Takagi nodded.

"Samejima-san, you really are the culprit." Conan accused. "None of us said the name Akiyama-san. There were a lot of uncertainties in this case. We need the culprit to confess to be sure we could arrest him."

"Samejima Takuro, you are under arrest for attempted murder." Takagi made the arrest.
